I hope you will join us in rattling “BOOM!”’s
cage and letting them know the apes look like…well….humans!

Reminds me of the
Burton spin-off comics more than anything
else (which were ok, some of them). But yeah, some of the chimps look very
human. In fact the only way to distinguish the humans is that they're bald.
Well, the male humans anyway. I'll still buy the first few issues though, and
if the story is worthwhile it could still tune up the artwork by #2 or #3.

Damn. So much for my theory that the Burton spin-off comics had the apes looking like they were from the original series. :)

.html...unless they're supposed to be ape/human hybrids, of course? They kind of look like they could be.
I don't to be too negative towards a big company taking an interest in POTA but yes, I will get in touch with them. The costumes and airships look out of place in a classic apes comic but I should probably wait until
I've read the first issue before I judge it.

POTA2001 was called "The Visitor" to throw people
off the trail. Just like "Return of the Jedi" was called "Blue Harvest" during
production. Basically they ARE doing these movies to "cash-in". It's just like
"Batman". Some people believe "Batman" will never be bettered than the '60's TV
show but we've had 6 "Batman" movies since then. Yeah, one was called "The Dark
Knight" but that's a very familiar "Batman" name. The game is familiarity.
That's what gets people in theater seats (they believe). Just like the concept
of movie stars.

Excellent point. I share the same view. I believe that
Burton originally wanted to call the film "The Visitor" which makes a lot
of sense. Burton's film is enjoyable enough but I don't have it on
dvd.

I'm a bit disappointed with that, it seems like a cash-in attempt.
I thought it was a good idea that a reboot should be a franchise in its
own right. I still think that if Burton's movie had had an original name
it wouldn't have had the direct comparisons with the 1968 movie, which
it could never live up to. Kind of like how I Am Legend was the same
movie as The Omega Man, but not a remake. It did have its own name
during production but likewise it was changed to the very unimaginative
'POTA' in time for release. Neil M --- In PotaDG@yahoogroups.com,

Well, the male humans anyway. I'll still buy the first few issues though, and if the story is worthwhile it could still tune up the artwork by #2 or #3.

As far as the cloths go, I think it's ok to make the cloths a little different for a differen't Era, afer all, The cloths in battle looked the way they did because the buget was so
damn lowe they had no choice but to use the same old costumes, so I don't think there is a Problem with elaborating things a bit and giving the cloths of this Era a differen't look, the Problem is that the
designs are too far removed from the classic apes. so much that they do look like they are from the Burton film, The Lawgiver's outfit is actually a pretty decent update

earlier, or even preview on something like "Entertainment Tonight". This week

since "original APES" clothes are what they used in BATTLE, they are "canon"

yeah, some of the chimps look very human. In fact the only way to distinguish
the humans is that they're bald. Well, the male humans anyway. I'll still buy
the first few issues though, and if the story is worthwhile it could still tune
up the artwork by #2 or #3.

The FX company WETA seems to be taking a
particular interest in the new apes. Maybe because people have particularly
criticized this for not having makeup. They've provided a look at Caesar and
will have a live chat on Wednesday.

WETA's Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon will host a
live chat about the FX for "Rise of the POTA" on Wednesday, 2:30 Pacific Desert
Time. It will be on the "Avatar" Facebook page (because it already has a big
crowd).
The "Rise of the POTA" trailer will hit the 'net
Thursday and then I guess go out with the #1 movie worldwide this week, "Rio",
which arrives stateside Friday. <.html <.html

Every POTA ape has had human eyes. Considering
some fans want nothing less than for these to be exact copies of the '60's apes,
I'd say they make them look more like the apes we've known. And also makes them
more relatable and sympathetic than ape eyes would. Works for me, as long as the
"science" in the script can explain it.

farther, certainly not to the constellation of Orion, but it's led to some cool

The press release makes tomorrow's chat
sound pretty cool. It will be the WETA FX dudes explaining how Caesar is "a CG
character that gives a performance of unprecedented emotion and intelligence"
and that "working on a POTA film has long been the "holy grail" of visual FX
wizardry - and a driving force behind their own careers". Also part of the chat
will be director Rupert Wyatt and some of the other folks involved. And there
will be a video about Andy Serkis' work on the film. I know that POTA is a
favorite film of WETA co-founder Peter Jackson (who did a POTA homage in one of
the films he did as a kid, and long tried to do a POTA film himself, with
Roddy's blessing). So maybe tomorrow we'll get a better idea of what this will
be.

There's no way anyone here will be happy unless it's a scene for scene, identical make up copy of the original POTA. POTA was/is a great Sci Fi movie. POTA 01 was a decent ACTION
movie with GREAT, make up. Rick Baker's designs were as close to real as you can get with an actor underneath using their own expressions. Now people are complaining that these apes are not accurate. So the
make ups in Conquest made you think they were real apes? C'MON---IT'S A MOVIE. IT"S A DIFFERENT TAKE ON POTA. Look at it as it's own movie, not part of the original.

Hi Jeff
I’m looking forward to this movie and I
for one won’t be surprised if it’s as good as or better than the original (for
starters it has a believable scenario – that the intelligent apes evolve so
quickly because they are genetically altered).
I like the new look but something bothered
me about it. When I spoke to Neil I realized it was the eyes….or the eyebrow
area….
It just does not look right to me and I
think it would look better with the bumps there that normal apes do have.
If they are going for a ape/human look
they should just go with a Chambers look with GCI “Clutch Cargo” mouth.
If they are going for a REAL ape look,
then they should make them look like real apes.
Maybe Caesar is developing – maybe all of
the apes are slowly BECOMING human (ha – that would be a nice twist)….but I don’t
think so!

the script, whether this is part of the original films (I don't think so, some
people do) and whether James Franco is that cute for real (impossible, no one
is!).

it?
Hi
Jeff
IÂ’m looking forward to
this movie and I for one wonÂ’t be surprised if itÂ’s as good as or better than
the original (for starters it has a believable scenario – that the intelligent
apes evolve so quickly because they are genetically
altered).
I like the new look but
something bothered me about it. When I spoke to Neil I realized it was the
eyesÂ….or the eyebrow areaÂ….
It just does not look
right to me and I think it would look better with the bumps there that normal
apes do have.
If they are going for a
ape/human look they should just go with a Chambers look with GCI “Clutch Cargo”
mouth.
If they are going for a
REAL ape look, then they should make them look like real
apes.
Maybe Caesar is
developing – maybe all of the apes are slowly BECOMING human (ha – that would be
a nice twist)Â….but I donÂ’t think so!
Michael

There's no
way anyone here will be happy unless it's a scene for scene, identical make up
copy of the original POTA. POTA was/is a great Sci Fi movie. POTA 01
was a decent ACTION movie with GREAT, make up. Rick Baker's designs were
as close to real as you can get with an actor underneath using their own
expressions. Now people are complaining that these apes are not
accurate. So the make ups in Conquest made you think they were real
apes? C'MON---IT'S A MOVIE. IT"S A DIFFERENT TAKE ON POTA.
Look at it as it's own movie, not part of the
original.

A "scene for scene, identical make up copy of the original POTA" would make me unhappy. The last thing I want is an exact copy of something we've had before, what's the
point of that?

The word "prequel" has been bandied about so much
that some think it's a prequel to the original film (in fairness there's a draft
of the script that has been on the internet that includes a cameo by "Taylor").
If one believes in an alternate timeline in which the world blows up in
"Beneath" and "Escape" starts a new one, then there could be another course of
events that leads to the apes taking over in the first timeline.
Probably if this flops and there's no sequels,
one could continue to make that assumption. But I think this is a "prequel" only
in the way "Batman Begins" is a prequel: showing the origin but not tied to any
previous version. But a lot of people are really hungry for a continuation of
the previous films and don't want to start fresh.

Jeff that looks like one of the never-before seen photos published by Sid on his yuku site. Apparently, he has about 60 of them, and he was to post 5 photos every Christmas...but that never happened. He must
have gotten busy with real life and whatnot, and although I waited patiently, December came and went and nothing more.

Good stuff on the chat. Hopefully it will be
archived somewhere so everyone can see it. For now it looks like they keep
repeating it. About a half hour. I didn't know it was going to be an
actual video, I thought it would be people typing. Dan Jolin of "Empire"
magazine moderates.
Starts with a video of behind the scenes with
comments by director Rupert Wyatt, then live from New Zealand with the WETA
guys, Dan Lemmon and Joe Letteri. Obviously most of the questions were about CG.
They talked about how they build from one movie to another, stuff developed for
"Avatar" helped this, etc. They said one of the advantages of this flick is that
the apes are roughly the same size as the humans so it's easier to facilitate
the CG actors while filming (the "Avatar" folks and Kong were big, Gollum was
small compared to the people playing them). Letteri said WETA was particularly
interested because it's an origin story and showing how the apes
develop.
Andy Serkis joins them and has great praise for
the script, the director and Franco. Says his character goes through a
"beautifully written" character arc. He also says he based Caesar on the famous
humanzee (Oliver). Says there's no comparison really with doing "King Kong"
because the characters go on different journeys. They also showed some footage
of Caesar and I noticed he wiggles his nose like Roddy used to do. I loved that
touch!
There is some really cool concept art and the
finale looks like it will be incredible. It ends with a couple secs of tonight's
trailer. <.html <.html

Yeah, the concept art of the Apes in revolt won me over. It looks amazing & to hear Andy Serkis talk about the conflict & emotion Caesar goes through not understanding where he fits in seems
right on target. I think we may finally get that more adult Planet of the Apes movie created by people who "get it" that we've all dreamed about. I'm really excited now.
....but I was really excited when I got my first glimpses of Rick Bakers make-up too... & we all know how that worked out.

After "The Hobbit" maybe they'll reunite for

Here's a trailer for John "Jake's Friend" Landis'
first film, "Schlock!". It features the only film appearance of POTA makeup
legend John Chambers, as he leads the attack in the film's "King Kong" parody
finale (that's him asking, "Why not?"). By his side in that scene was young
makeup whiz Rick Baker, who did the ape makeup for this film and of course later
did the makeup for POTA2001. Also watch for an authentic POTA pullover
mask.
Besides portraying King Kong in the 1976 remake,
Rick Baker returned to battle the ape as the lead pilot in the climax of Peter
Jackson's 2005 "King Kong" (Jackson played his gunner). Of course Kong himself
was created by Jackson's FX company WETA, the same folks who did the "Rise of
the POTA" stuff we've been checking out.
From John Chambers to Rick Baker to WETA, the
creators of the Apes in two "King Kong" moments.

Though not outright banning them, China is turning
a suspicious eye on depictions of time travel in entertainment (this means you,
POTA!) because such portrayals "lack positive thoughts and meaning". They won't
rest until Rich Handley is out of business.

He kind of makes it sound like an alternate prequel to the original movie. Like it will ignore the other four sequels but might tie in with the original?

No, sir. It's a start over. The director compares

Patrick Doyle will end the summer movie season
musically with his score for "Rise of the POTA". But before that he will bring
it in with his score of "Thor". Some samples are up (click the link below and
then the image of Thor) for those who want to hear the chops of the 2011
tent-pole model Doyle.
"Thor" marks Doyle's 9th movie score for director
Kenneth Branagh (5 of them Shakespeare films).

"Really what lies at the heart of this story is
the breaking of the bond between human and ape. That is fundamentally
encapsulated between the father/son relationship between (Will) and
Caesar...It's their story". - - - "Rise" director Rupert
Wyatt
Last week's trailer provided some good moments
but I don't think it served the story well. It looked like any other "things Man
wasn't meant to know"/animals run amok movie. It DID seem like "Deep Blue
Sea" (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbPFXBp9wdE
) though if you want to see a shark attack a
helicopter, try "Jaws 2". I'm sure they will spotlight the story more in another
trailer, but I was more encouraged by the set interviews and recent talks with
the director Rupert Wyatt that appeared with the trailer. I thought I'd share
some of that in the next 5 posts, taking the best stuff and corralling them into
topics. Hopefully it will answer some questions people have.
I know there are those who want to stay
spoiler-free and pure as the driven snow until they see the movie. I've tried to
keep possible spoilers contained in this first post. Mostly it's basic story
structure. "Ape" fans probably won't find any big surprises here (psst!
eventually the apes take over). It's the journey, not the destination that
matters. So the sensitive types can just move along for now. There's nothing to
see here.
As we saw in the trailer, "Rise of the POTA"
deals with the development of intelligence in apes, so they can be just as
reckless on the streets as we are. Will Rodman (James Franco) develops an
Alzheimer's cure (ALZ112) that "allows the brain to repair itself". He tests it
on Bright Eyes (I think that's the chimp in the trailer that demands more
cookies) who gives birth to our hero, Caesar. Act One takes place at the GenSis
lab and at the Rodman home, where Will takes Caesar after some setbacks. This is
the home of Will's Alzheimer's-stricken dad (John Lithgow), who gives him cause
to find a cure fast. According to Franco, Will "goes from a very isolated,
scientific, cold kind of personality to a much more humane and caring person" in
this story. Into the Rodman home comes Caesar, who takes up residence in
the attic. The attic window becomes his view of the world during his 3 years
with the Rodmans and later the window's shape becomes his "symbol" as a leader
(a circle with a diamond in it). The reporter from collider.com noticed the
calendar at the Rodmans' showed August 2016.
This first part I would imagine is like "Escape",
where the chimp bonds with the human family before tragedy occurs. Then, just
like Cornelius and Zira, Caesar is taken into custody. He winds up at a primate
"sanctuary", kind of the Ape Management of this story where Caesar gets a less
than positive picture about how his fellow apes are treated. This is where
some of the other ape personalities come into focus, including a loner gorilla
named Buck (seen leaving his cage in the trailer), an orangutan named Maurice,
and a love interest for Caesar, Cornelia (the director reportedly took a
shine to this aspect and expanded it). There's also an alpha male named Rocket
that Caesar has to challenge.
The place is run by lousy human bastards Hank
Landon (Brian Cox) and his son Dodge (Tom Felton). Dodge Landon? It's here that
Caesar learns how apes are really treated on this planet and sows the seeds for
the future. Director Rupert Wyatt explains, "Caesar makes a transition to a
darker personality, to a darker character, because he realizes that there is no
way that he can rely upon human kindness and humanity itself to save him or help
him. He will always be the same as the rest of the apes in this film, which is
very much exploited. That's what brings about the revolution; that's the
seed". Rick Jaffa, the screenwriter, adds that "in many ways, it's an
animal rights story...You're not going to be able to get around that issue - the
treatment of animals".
As seen in the trailer, they soon make
their escape, and Act 3 gets much more scenic. The big question about the
trailer right now seems to be: how can a relatively small group of apes take
over the world? The short answer is: they don't. There's no conquest in this
film, which might disappoint those who seem to be expecting it. But that will
have to wait. As Rupert Wyatt says, "We're setting everything up for...what will
come next...This is about leveling the playing field". Of course, "leveling the
playing field", especially when it comes to the end of human civilization, could
be pretty bleak. But Wyatt insists, "At it's heart, it's a very hopeful film.
There's some redemption to it, and for some reason, I think it's a very
uncynical film. The cynical version of this would be to really echo Charlton
Heston's words on the beach with seeing mankind's demise for all of it's worst
traits...With this, it's kind of a more human story about certain personable
decisions".
What is "Rise of the POTA"? As director Wyatt
describes it, "It's a fairy tale, it's a love story, it's about a father-son
relationship, it's an action movie, it's a dark drama and it's a cautionary
tale. It's all sorts of things"...I think we're ending with certain questions,
which is quite exciting. To me, I can think of all sorts of sequels to this
film, but this is just the beginning".

Believe it or not, 20th Century Fox did not have
a mandate to make a new POTA ("Get someone on "Apes", pronto!"). "Rise of the
POTA" literally began on the floor of screenwriter Rick Jaffa. Says he: "The
idea came together from several different sources and bits I'd been working on
and staring at a long time. One of which was the amount of people in our country
that are raising chimps and primates in their homes, some as pets, but many as
children. I'd done a lot of research for other projects about genetic
engineering... I was literally sitting on the floor looking at 50 different
things I'd been working on and researching, and just moving pieces around on the
floor. And I swear to you...I had an article about the guy, St. Pierre...genetic
research and different things. And I swear, I just said, "Oh my god. This is
POTA". I had 5 different things and I just went, "That, that, that, that"...
Amanda (Silver) and I had been working at Fox, and we called them up and said
that we've got this idea. The thing is, we assumed that they either were
developing it at the moment or had thought about it and decided not to. The
idea was just one of those things that came together so strongly and so
quickly that we called up and pitched it, and then they talked it over and
decided to go through with it".
Indeed, no one seemed that enthused about
revisiting POTA per se. It was the idea of doing a modern, realistic version
that excited them. Speaking for the suits, Chernin Entertainment producer Dylan
Clark says, "I know that Peter (Chernin) and I never thought, "Oh, we have to do
POTA!". We felt like, because (Jaffa's) idea was so strong, that it was a
great one to do because it represented the big tent pole movie that was also
smart. The quality was there". The eventual director, Rupert Wyatt, concurs: "I
always thought - and this is what attracted me to this film - to see the
evolution from it's inception and why an exploited species rises up against it's
dominators. To me that is really dramatic and fascinating". And in the recent
"chat" Joe Letteri said the FX company WETA was particularly interested in the
project because it's the origin story. Everyone seems to have been on the same
page. Wyatt: "As far as the studio, the producers, the writers and myself, we've
always looked to tell the story of how this new civilization has begun. It's a
real origin story and in the truest sense of the word. We've been real faithful
to that. When it comes to the studio, there was never any wavering about
that".
Jaffa gave the timeline of the project as 4 years
as of August 2010 (2006ish?). He said he and his partners developed it for 2
years, then Scott Frank joined as potential director for a year (including
writing his own draft). After Frank left, the studio passed it around for
further development before coming full circle back to Jaffa. The project wound
up with Chernin Entertainment, the new company founded by former News Corp # 2
Peter Chernin, who now had a deal with Fox as a producer.
The search for a director lead to a surprising
choice: Rupert Wyatt, who's only previous feature had been the micro-budgeted
indie "The Escapist". In fact, Wyatt suspects he might have made the biggest
budget leap for a director in movie history (of course there's J. J. Abrams,
whose first feature ever was the $ 150 million "Mission: Impossible 3"). Says
Wyatt: "I'm fortunate on this film of having two outstanding producers, Peter
Chernin and Dylan Clark, who have been incredibly strong from day one. There's
irony in that Peter Chernin used to actually run 20th Century Fox... I like to
think one of the reasons why he employed me, instead of a far bigger name
director, was because we saw eye-to-eye early on with how we wanted to make this
film".
Producer Clarke explains their reasons: "There
are lots of different reasons why you choose directors. There are other guys we
looked at that you know exactly how they'd make that movie. We just didn't want
to be the summer movie that came out and exploited "Apes" in an aggressive,
action way...We wanted something more, and with Rupert you didn't know exactly
what he was going to give. He's going to give something great, but the end
product was unknown" (Clark loved John Carpenter's take on "The
Thing").
Clarke also adds that "the themes of his movie
("The Escapist") were clearly in the movie". "Rise" is basically a prison escape
movie and both films share the theme of redemption. But this time actor Brian
Cox gets to be the warden instead of the escapee.

We’ve had a few enquiries about the
second issue of The Forbidden Zine.
The first issue sold out quickly, and Neil
and I received excellent feedback.
However, it’s not a walk in the park
to get together and now that Neil and I are writing children’s books the
Forbidden Zine is on the backburner.
Not to mention the devastating flood that
buried Neil’s house in toxic river water for 4 days and destroyed a large
part of my collectibles that I was storing at Neil’s during the
Queensland floods
earlier this year.
I can tell you a few things though….
(1)
Price – a lot of people said $20 was too much to fork out and
while all agreed it was value for money, most wanted us to se if we could
reduce the price. Each issue cpst me over $20 to print and postage cost
me $15 an issue so as you can imagine it was an enormpus economic burden. This
time we’ll be doing a VERY limited (probably 10!) run of full colour
issues and 100 Black and White issues (with full colour cover).
(2)
The “BACK STORY” will remain a 5 page comic (this is
100% complete!);
(3)
The MAIN STORY will be reduced to an 8 page comic (this is 50%
complete).
As for when, well it’s looking like
after the new movie and possibly even around Christmas time.
I’ll be trying to get the latest
from Drew, there will be an article with interviews from BOOM! And some awesome
prizes again, and we look at fan made films plus a few more articles to be
completed.
All I can promise is again it will be
worth waiting for.
