Group: potadg Message: 58930 From: Jeff K. Date: 3/26/2011
Subject: "much" ado about "Rise"
.html
.html
"The Hollywood Reporter" says that Fox has seen "much" of "Rise of the Apes" in making their decision to move it, so it sounds like the CG is under control and they might be close to a first cut. Again, it would seem to be in "much" better shape than the new "X-Men", which just recently finished shooting and has an early June debut. "Apes" finished shooting back in September.
The article also mentions that big summer releases spilling into August are becoming common (just as they've spread earlier and earlier into May to the point where the first big summer movie, "Thor", opens the first week of May; technically I don't think that's even summer).

If they weren't saying it was set after BATTLE and/or if they were saying
it was an all new take on things it'd be fine... But, they're saying it ties
in with the original storyline and unless this thing is set off way in it's

The guy involved with this comic series was invovled with that other POTA series back in the ninties. I'll check out the first issue and then vote with my dollar after that.

What I have heard is that, while the guys running BOOM! Were involved with ADVENTURE COMICS, they were not there for the POTA series ADVENTURE did in the 90s.

Apparently the POTA group has a “Chat with the author” lined up.

You should go ask some questions.

Also, don’t forget to put in a word for Neil if he’s your fave POTA comic artist….

Hey Michael--I'm going to Wondercon next Saturday.  If I see Don Pedro Colley there I'll snag you an autograph.

I couldn't find the interview with the author so I can't confirm in what capacity he was involved with the other POTA comic. On the Brightside, I won't turn down a chance to drop Neil's name with a publisher. We've been denied his art long enough.

Apparently the POTA group has a "Chat with the author" lined up.

You should go ask some questions.

Also, don't forget to put in a word for Neil if he's your fave POTA comic artist….

This is the announcement James made:

Daryl Gregory, the author of Boom! Studios new POTA comic ( http://eepurl.com/c5QlE) will be doing a Q&A with fans on the Yahoo! POTA group ( http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/ ) next Wednesday, March 30th at 4 to 5 PM US Eastern time.

Only group members can participate but anyone is free to join the group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/join.

I would join myself, but I know James would just take the opportunity to place me on “moderated status” so none of my comments would get through.

However, there’s nothing stopping others here from joining the group and participating.

I did so about 2 years ago Jeff and I was targeted by Rory and Lady T.  Strangely enough I was also targeted by James and it all lasted about 6 months of pure agony.

And not everyone is on moderated status; I can promise you that Jeff.

I can also promise you nobody else wants to bury the hatchet.

OK, so there's a new "Apes" movie coming in about 4 months. Based on what I've heard I think I will like it. Yeah, yeah, it's Fox. Yeah, yeah, it's CG. A CG POTA is like landing men on the moon. It's unnatural. They do that and God will send a plague of locusts to that studio. Right, Bernice?
Obviously I can't vouch for the movie yet. Probably at this point even the director doesn't know for sure what the final version will be like. But I have a good feeling based on the people involved, based on what I've heard so far and based on the outcry that accompanied the last one.
But even if it is a good movie, that doesn't mean it will please all POTA fundamentalists, especially those that weren't into "Escape". Because that's what it will probably be like. A chamber drama on the Planet of the Humans. And that's pretty risky. No apes with guns or clothes, no "conquest". But if things go right maybe a look into the human condition like we enjoyed in the originals. Is that enough?

Over the next 4 days, the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) will gather in Vegas and be treated to snacks and hype. It's Cinemacon, formerly known as Showest, and we may get a "Rise of the Apes" poster image or description of a trailer out of it. After all, it's coming out in 4 months.
NATO is also part of POTA history, since Arthur Jacobs did special compilations of footage for "Planet" and "Beneath" for them, including stuff that wound up not being in the movies. I believe the "Planet" one is on the DVD, maybe the blu-ray as well.

Hi Jeff.

I totally agree, I also get a good vibe.  I ASSUMED Burton ’s movie would be good – I loved what he had done and the actors were all well and truly my favourites.  But they screwed it and how.

This time I think a nice, more cerebral movie (or will it be?) is a great launching pad and then the sequel (2 years from now is my guess) will deliver lots of apes and lots of action.

Yes it’s enough….people should know that’s what APES is, or was, or should be before being diluted ad nauseum.

I do think there’s room for action and “APES WITH GUNS” as well at the end and I am anticipating we’ll get this but I can’t be sure till we see it!

Two years from now for the sequel would be groovy because it'll be the 50th anniversary of Boulle's novel.  : )
But usually it's 3 years between movies for the bigger franchises.  : (

Brilliant interview Rich.

I am not impressed with the “closed timeline” approach as it is inhibitive and leads to more inconsistencies, but overall I am very excited about what Daryl plans to do.

It’s interesting to me in particular because I’m fairly sure this was around the time Neil and I set the BEGINS story, and we also set it in a different country (but it ties in to the USA on the last page).

We also have a take on the LAWGIVER that is prominent in the story.

Here’s hoping it’s as good as it sounds and lasts longer than I do!

I like what I've been reading from the Daryl Gregory interviews so far.
I think relying mainly on the movies as reference and perspective is a
good idea. And yes, I like the fact that he is taking the 'circularist'
view. Putting the story 600 years after battle is a good place to be in
terms of being able to play with history. The biggest question I have
(and again, this accepting the notion of a circular timeline) is how did
humans devolve, losing speech and cerebral ability. Interesting if they
can pull it off.

I think the best news is that this is at least intended to be a long
drawn out series and not just a short series. If boom can generate even
decent sales it will mean a nice extended comic run which we haven't had
in a long time.

I also like the idea that this is not tied in with "Rise" as I
originally assumed it would be. The Dark Horse series comic series died
quickly when the Burton movie was not the hit it was expected to be.
That killed the comic series which was all bundled with the characters
and history set in the movie. With the Rise movie and Boom efforts
complete separate entities, I look at it as two shots instead of one as
Apes revival efforts.

Dario

Thanks Rich

Here’s the link and the text:

http://www.hassleinbooks.com/planet-of-the-apes-boom-studios-daryl-gregory-interview.html

HASSLEIN:   POTA   fandom has long been split over the question of whether the   Apes   films form a closed, circular loop or represent alternate histories. One camp cites the crying Caesar statue as evidence that things will go bad after  Battle , as well as screenwriter Paul Dehn's stated intention to portray history as being circular, with   Battle   leading to   Planet   and back to   Battle   again. The other notes discrepancies between Cornelius' historical account in  Escape   and what actually happened in   Conquest   and   Battle , as well as dialog from Hasslein and Virgil indicating the lanes can be changed. What made you decide to follow a closed-loop model for your storyline? And how would you reassure those who believe Conquest changed history entirely, in the hope that they'll give the series a chance?

GREGORY:  I should have elaborated. The key part of my answer is the "if" in "if  the  Apes universe is a closed time loop." It may not be. I don't think the series needs to decide that. From the characters' point of view, they don't know if the future is hardwired.

However, plenty of readers know what "happened" in the future, in at least one timeline—the most vivid one. That's the big threat that hangs over the series—how will the humans avoid being slaves? Will the apes turn away from technology or embrace it? Those questions are still valid, whether we're in a close-loop universe or not.

(By the way, it's interesting that Hasslein  talks about multiple timelines, but he acts  as if Cornelius and Zira's appearance is going to definitely cause the apocalypse they describe. He doesn't realize that they've already changed the past by arriving here. Or that his own
actions may cause the apocalypse to occur.)

*** I'm not impressed with the fact that they're going from the end of
BATTLE (which shows apes dressed in "ape attire") and suddenly decking them out
in "Masters of the Universe" clothes which go back to "apes clothes"
anyway... Why not draw them as they've always been (or with mild modifications like
in the TV show or Neil's drawings in "The Forbidden Zine")? Makes no sense
to me...

What I like less is the idea of them suddenly having a low-tech industrial
society... Yes, in PLANET and BENEATH they would have had some low tech
(otherwise where would the clothes, guns, medical tools, etc. come from?) but
what he described is a little too much for me... They might as well have gone
all out and duplicated RETURN... And "Skintown" where the humans live sounds
like a take-off on the word "Slagtown" to describe the Newcomers ghetto in
ALIEN-NATION...

Obviously the first photo of the new Caesar has caused some controversy. Some people seem to love it, others hate it. I love it. How much do I love thee?
  1) like a summer rain
  2) like a kind word from a stranger
  3) like a warm puppy at midnight

We can only see a small portion but it looks to me like they are going for a realistic version of the Chambers makeup. Look at the edges on this blowup:

Looks like Thade you say? So be it. Baker also attempted realistic apes. We love the original makeups but that was 40 years ago. It's time to let the new artists make their mark. To expect it to look exactly the same as 40 years ago is unrealistic. But it looks to me like they are trying to give a nod to the originals and I love that idea (though I could be wrong when the whole thing is revealed). I really thought it would be like the new King Kong where they'd be an ape's ape.
I'd rather keep the originals separate. Most of those who worked on them are gone. Is it fair to use the look John Chambers designed when he's almost ten years gone? We've got 5 movies and a TV show to enjoy whenever we want so vive la difference!

technically not a film adaption but a film tie-in release of Boulle's original
book, was also released. So the adaptions are: BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST,

Fun fact # 73: for most of the '90's, Ah-nuld was slated to star in the revamped POTA. They made "Rise of the Apes" too soon for him to star ("Dad, I will TERMINATE Alzheimer's. It won't be back"). So he'll just have to settle for his own franchise: "The Governator" (created with none other than Stan Lee). Planned are comic books, a TV show and even a 3D feature film. Like another POTA couldabeen, Charlie Sheen, Ah-nuld is blurring the line between reality and celebrity.

"Rise of the Apes" staked it's claim on August 5th and soon "The Smurfs" blinked and moved their release date. Now comes word that another flick, the alien invasion movie "The Darkest Hour" (because you can never have too many alien invasions) is moving on as well. I can't guarantee that all this movement is over fear of "Rise of the Apes" but it does give one stinking pause.
That leaves the body switch comedy "Change Up", the drama "The Whistleblower" and the comedy "Dirty Girl" to go up against the Apes. Caesar will have them for lunch.

Cirque's newest show TOTEM just had it's North America premiere here in Charlotte after playing in London. The theme is evolution ...or the "myth of evolution" for those so inclined....so of course there were a handful of apes....a couple of chimps, an orangutang and a gorilla...being a live stage show, they are all masks but pretty well done and with more than a hint of POTA influence......Here's some shots I found online and some scans from the program....

Truer words were never written, Jess. Call me infantile but I really want to lay in bed and read a POTA comic. It looks like the only ways that will happen is if I commish Neil to draw it OR I read the old Marvel series again.

IGN visited the "Apes" set last year when it was called "Caesar: Rise of the Apes" and during this whole title change thing is sporting a photo of the visitor's badge. I kinda like that logo with what looks like a chalkboard in the background. The "school's in session" motif is cool. I vote for that.

How many copies of issue 1 did you buy Chris? Apparently you can get cover A, cover B, a limited edition cover, the Incentive cover and even a Retailer Variant cover (whatever that is!)
What was wrong with just the one cover per comic?

Well, this is interesting.
It seems that riseoftheplanetoftheapes.com, .net and .org still belongs to me until March 2012.
It seems that my host server company re-registered it under my name prior to canceling the account.

If I'm reading this correctly, then most likely I'll return the site if I can get it back and running with the same domain name.
I mean, how offten is it the one can operate a web site with the correct movie title in the domain name? That would be very cool.
Only if of course I can get it up and running again. If not then forget it.

Incentive covers are variants which publishers will send/ sell to a retailer if  a certain sales bracket is reached.

So with Boom's POTA if a retailer buys 10 copies they then get a different variant cover as their 11th copy.

Other publishers have lots of different brackets / incentive levels 1:25  1:100 etc... just a way of hyping retailers orders.

Boom's POTA should be out on the 27th of April.

Best,Graham.

Subject: OT: Ben Affleck to direct movie about John Chambers?
.html
.html
George Clooney is producing a movie called "Argo", about how the CIA enlisted Hollywood to help during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. A key to that mission was John Chambers and Jack Kirby. When I interviewed John, he said his work with his government was what he was most proud of in his life. Now, with his most famous Hollywood creation, "Planet of the Apes" ' makeup, going CG, maybe Hollywood will give John his due in another way. I say "maybe" because it remains to be seen what this script is (it's based on a 2007 article in "Wired" magazine). Will Chambers be portrayed, will the characters be fictionalized?
Ben Affleck is reportedly the front runner to direct (if that makes you laugh, see "The Town"). So we'll have to see where it goes.

In the infamous year 2001 (besides Burton's movie it was the year John died) American Movie Classics presented their documentary "Into the Shadows: the CIA in Hollywood" about the event. I'll have to dig that out.

I'm a bit disappointed with that, it seems like a cash-in attempt. I thought it was a good idea that a reboot should be a franchise in its own right. I still think that if Burton's movie had had an original name it wouldn't have had the direct comparisons with the 1968 movie, which it could never live up to. Kind of like how I Am Legend was the same movie as The Omega Man, but not a remake. It did have its own name during production but likewise it was changed to the very unimaginative 'POTA' in time for release.

Excellent point. I share the same view. I believe that Burton originally wanted to call the film "The Visitor" which makes a lot of sense. Burton's film is enjoyable enough but I don't have it on dvd.

Reminds me of the Burton spin-off comics more than anything else (which were ok, some of them). But yeah, some of the chimps look very human. In fact the only way to distinguish the humans is that they're bald. Well, the male humans anyway. I'll still buy the first few issues though, and if the story is worthwhile it could still tune up the artwork by #2 or #3.
