.htmlMcDowall, Hunter and Evans almost looked "comical" in 1968?
Says the pota2001 got assailed, due in part to putting the actors in
make-up? That's one of the consistent "positives" I've heard for that film: That
the make-ups are/were good...
Safe to say this guy doesn't like APES (or at least doesn't like make-ups
in film)...

Someone on "Facebook" (the person who runs
www.thelunchmovie.com so they seem
to be serious about movies) says they heard a "rampant" rumor that Caesar will
speak one word (as he does in the script) and it will be Roddy's voice saying
it. Cool or folly?

Just been talking to my eldest lad on the phone and told me that he saw the Hangover 2 the other night and saw the ROTPOTA trailer which he hadn't seen yet and reckoned it looked great.
He now wants to go and see it with me when it comes out down here, which is something I never ever thought I'd hear him say!.

My 11 yr old is excited too!!! Maybe this movie can hook the younger generation into enjoying Planet of the Apes the way we got hooked as kids? I'm hopeful!

Isn't it beautiful? Bridging the generations

And the Lord said, "Let there be CG!". And there
was, and it was good.

I have to admit, I'm tickled pink, blue, red, green and puce over the newest trailer. There's a line in it..."Evolution becomes Revolution" that I used in the solicits
for the second or third issue of our mini-series Revolution on the Planet of the Apes. I don't for a moment believe they took the line from our comic series (I'm not that egotistical), but it's surreal to
see it used for a movie release!

Fox is planning to get into the ape business big
time. Besides "Rise of the POTA" (and maybe sequels) they plan to visit "King
Kong" in an animated feature. Fox has already done the animated "Space Chimps"
and a straight to DVD sequel but maybe good vibes for "Rise" is behind this
announcement.

Brian Cox plays lousy human bastard Hank Landon
(I love that name) in "Rise of the POTA". He doesn't bother treating the apes at
his "sanctuary" well because they're not human, you know. Cox is the only "Rise"
actor, and maybe the only "Rise" person period, who has worked with original
"Apes" director Franklin Schaffner. Cox played no less than Commie icon Leon
Trotsky ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Trotsky
) in Schaffner's "Nicholas and Alexandra".
In this century he starred in and produced Rupert
Wyatt's first feature, "The Escapist", which paved the way for Wyatt
directing "Rise" (Cox says Fox asked him for a recommendation before hiring
Wyatt). Cox has had a great career but seems best known for playing villains in
flicks like "Troy", "X-Men 2", the "Bourne" movies, and he was
even the first to play beloved cannibal Hannibal Lector (the role
later gobbled up by Anthony Hopkins) in "Manhunter".
Cox has talked recently about "Rise". Says
he about this new CG world: "Now the CGI people can do all the makeup. It's
great, but I like the old style. We have to move with the times". But it's not
makeup, you know.

Numbers for April comics are starting to appear on the web.
http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/06/08/indie-month-to-month-sales-april-2011/
Boom's POTA comes in at 164 (In the top 300) with sales of 9333
Now these figures are always picked at and tend to come in low, they don't include any reorders, sales to the UK, 2nd prints might not be included etc so a pinch of salt ...but
Revolution came in at under 3000 for the first issue if memory serves, so in the right direction.

Comic-Con in recent years has become a madhouse, a
madhouse! when it comes to promoting new movies but reportedly studios are
chilling to the idea that it helps much. However, "Rise of the POTA" is one of
the flicks expected to have a presentation this year (since the Con takes place
July 21 - 24, the timing is perfect). So it could be a good gathering spot
this year for "Ape" fans in general, though it might be better called Planet of
the Sardines. I think it's already sold out. We'll see if Fox has something cool
up their sleeve.

I first saw the first 2 movies as a kid in elementary school or junior high. I saw the first two again but have yet to see the others. I have several questions that experts may be able to
answer:
1) Why was it called PLANET of the Apes when it was not apparent that apes had taken over the whole world, but only Manhattan? Shouldn't it have been called CITY of the Apes?
2) In Beneath, Cornelius says that the chimpanzees are a minority and don't have power against the gorillas. How did this happen? How did the gorillas become the military power, and how did the orangutans attain
civilian power in the city according to their history?
3) How did the humans lose their power of speech when the semians acquired power of speech?
4) Did the Icarus land in Arizona, and the 3 astronauts trekked all the way to NY?
5) What had happened in the rest of the world aside from Manhattan?
6) How did an activated bomb get transferred into St. Patrick's cathedral?
7) Last but not least, if it became almost easy to travel over time through the Hasslein Curve, shouldn't it have been possible to travel back and forth, at least to prevent the destruction of the Earth?

Now that I have just seen Escape from POTA, is there an explanation of the rationale why Cornelius and Zira and Dr. Milo decided to fuel up the Icarus and leave if they didn't know the
planet was going to be destroyed and left family behind? At what point did they switch the baby gorilla at Armando's circus for their own, and did it make any difference that theirs was a chimp and the other one was
a gorilla?

While we now know that the opposite is true, at the time, Gorillas were
generally considered more violent and powerful than chimps. And also
somewhat less intelligent. So it would only be natural for Gorillas to
assume the more menial tasks of policing and providing the 'military'
for that society. Presumably, chimps had the highest pure intellect,
thereby assuming the scientific and rational thinking roles. And the
Ourangutans were the 'deep thinkers' so they ended up with the
political/psychological/religious roles.
The irony is that today we know that Gorillas, while fiercer looking,
are actually tamer than chimps. Any one of these simians can go on a
rampage when provoked or spooked, but it's the chimps that are more likely.
> 4) Did the Icarus land in Arizona, and the 3 astronauts trekked all

They don't call it Arizona in the film, nor do they imply it. Sure it
looks like Arizona, but that is because in the time interval between now
(well 1972) and the future, Earth has undergone great changes, both
natural, and man-made atomic bombing. So that desert sequence is
supposed to be walking distance from Manhattan.
> 5) What had happened in the rest of the world aside from Manhattan?
We don't know. There could be other ape settlements, and even more
mutant enclaves. But the films concentrate on only the Ape City and the
remnants of Manhattan.
> 6) How did an activated bomb get transferred into St. Patrick's
> cathedral?
You know, that is a very good question! One would presume that earlier
generations of the mutants brought it in as it was set up in the
cathedral and the control panels were placed right in front. But Taylor
also mentions at one point something like "They don't even know what
they've got" meaning that they don't know it would blow up the entire
planet. Whoever did move it must have some detailed technical
information to move something like that.
> 7) Last but not least, if it became almost easy to travel over time

Zira, Cornelius and Milo did come back. And that's what Dr. Otto

That’s right Dario.
We are never told how it came to be so but
some of it is based on the roles the various apes had in Boulle’s novel.
We know very little except there was an

Both Hasslein and Virgil explained the multi-lane highway concept, so that the inevitable future had at least two possibilities: one with an Aldo saying NO and the other with Caesar leading
the way much earlier, i.e. in the 1990s.

While we're at it, what happened between Conquest and Battle that led to nuclear war, and why did the underdwellers remain in the filthy dark underground if they could live on the land
like the apes and other humans?
Why did the apes not develop technologically in the 2000 years between Battle and POTA?
They remained in the horse and buggy stage for 2000 years despite having knowledge in other areas.
How was it that in Battle the underdwellers had a launch silo with a nuclear missile intact when everything surrounding them was destroyed? Where did they get fuel for their school bus and cars, electricity and running
water?!
Was there a United Ape Nations and did all apes speak only English? Or were there Chinese and Arabic speaking apes? And how did the apes manage as slaves and free beings in cold climates?
Was there any intention to do another story after Battle and were there anyintellectual humans besides the McDonald brothers or any intellectual gorillas?
It sounded as if the chimps were prejudiced against gorillas ....
Now as a middle-aged adult I am extremely impressed by the underlying moral messages in the original movies despite the obvious thematic flaws. I have yet to see the 2001 movie which sounds like it was a totally
different story. I have yet to see the 13 TV episodes as well.
Seems to me though that the female apes were pretty much in hiding except for Zira and Lisa. No female orangutans or gorillas. Pretty neat how they became all so intelligent in only 10 years. With elderly wise teachers
such as Virgil, etc.

enough. The whole point of POTA was not to show what the entire world
was like at the point, but to see what it all meant from Taylor's point
of view. So just showing a small Ape 'city' was enough. This way they
were able to concentrate on some detail character development (Zaius,
Zira and Cornelius). It would have been a totally different type of
movie had they tried to show everything, and would not have orked as well.
Besides, we got the kick ass Liberty ending this way. :)

could very well be the same in the original APES timeline...
People assume because of the name Aldo that it was a gorilla and that Aldo
is a "gorilla name"... But in CONQUEST the messenger chimp that Caesar sees
being beaten is named Aldo... Since a lot of Boulle's ideas were source
material, the idea that it was a chimp to speak the first word might be
correct...

**** What led to the nuclear war was what always causes wars: People can't
get along with themselves... As to why the mutants remained in the
underground city it might be that they felt nothing was capable of sustaining life
outside of their fallout shelters, etc. so they stayed where they "knew" they
could survive for awhile... Both guesses... ****

**** In the BATTLE novel, it's explained that they didn't allow technology
because they saw it as too much of a "human thing"... That way of thinking
(that technology is "evil") just carried on thru the centuries... Plus,
keeping technology limited helped keep the masses under control... ****

**** If apes were in power in other countries, it'd be a safe bet that
they'd adopt whatever lamguage is native to that country... As to how they
survived in cold climates: As slaves, I'm sure their masters would have provided
them with adequate provisions/shelter just like people who live in cold
climates do for their pets in the present day... After their revolt, they
probably had stockpiles of grains and root cellars like the pioneers used to
have... ****
> Was there any intention to do another story after Battle and were there

**** BATTLE was promoted as the last film in the series, but they briefly
considered doing a sixth when they seen BATTLE was doing well in the theaters
but they dropped the idea, opting to do the TV series intead...
As far as "intellectual" humans, in BATTLE there was the Teacher and Doctor
if that counts... ****

It just became harder to get a Best Picture Oscar
nomination. After a couple years with 10 nominees, it's been announced the
number of nominees could be anywhere from 5 to 10. Now nominees have to at
least get 5% of the # 1 votes for the year to qualify. So "Rise" will have
to be even better.
"Rise of the POTA" being a Best Picture nominee
might seem laughable to some, but there's been some good vibes coming from the
innovative production. The WETA FX company has been a lucky charm as far as
nominations. All 3 "Lord of the Rings" movies were Best Picture noms ("Return of
the King" won Best Picture) and both "Avatar" and "District 9" got Best Pic
nominations in 2010. <.html <.html

storms off the set and says, "I can't take it! Who writes this CRAP? No Roddy,
I'm leaving. I'm DONE!". Then Roddy retorts, "Sal, I believe some day they will

smiles knowingly.
That's all I ask.

There's plenty of movie lists out

he's ideologically opposed to, then explains why they're "great films". In our
partisan world, that seems fair. An exercise in left brain, right brain. And
it's a surprise to see POTA on this list, especially this high up (# 5).
And here's the list (a planned Top 25 but only 20

The name came from Boulle's book, where it really was an alien planet. The idea of changing it to New York happened while the film was being written.
> 2) How did the orangutans attain civilian power in the city according to their history?
A point in the script for 'Battle' suggests that Virgil resembles the Lawgiver seen at the beginning & end of the movie - so that it was orangs such as Virgil that made them so influential. (Is it
significant that Caesar has to stop Virgil from shooting the retreating mutants?) The 90s Adventure Comics continued that idea with Virgil's son writing the Sacred Scrolls.
> 5) What had happened in the rest of the world aside from Manhattan?
There's only two mentions I can think of, neither in the movies - the Adventure Comics had a story set in France, where apes were very advanced and humans had been wiped out. And there was a great story
in one of the 70s annuals where some chimps sailed to Peru and were captured by the humans who still ruled there. There may also have been a recent fanzine comic... :O <.html

If the reports are true, it might get an "official" mention under that name in 'Rise'. I don;t understand why they would get all indignant about Rise being called a
prequel, and then stick in a reference to the Icarus, or use a name like Caesar. Kinda shooting themselves in the foot, creatively speaking.

Yes, I have the license for a second novel that will come out for fall 2012. These illustrated novels are written and creative directed by me, produced by my company BLAM! Ventures, and
published by ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT. It is a separate thing than the BOOM! license, as theirs is comics. If Conspiracy and the second book do well, then the license will be extended. In total, I have a six novel arc
planned, as of now only the first two books are confirmed.

NEW CHARACTERS:
Mungwortt
Taylor's timeline's version of a character who appeared briefly in the cartoon/cartoon novelization series, Mungwortt in this "lane of the highway" that is time is also a halfbreed
gorilla/chimpanzee.Instead of being an effeminate soldier, however, he is a drunken garbage ape - a member of the civil service, sanitation division.
Old Zao
Again a new character who has a direct correlation to the animated series, but exists in Taylor's timeline, Zao was Minister of Science before Zaius, and is now retired, spending his days playing strategy games in
the square with his friend and fellow retiree, Sabian. Zao feels that ape city has too many secrets, and that some conspiracies need to come to an end.
Seraph
Dr. Milo's assistant, a female chimp who insists she is descended from apes that lived on the sea, and does not fear water.
Liet
Another female chimp, this one the housewife of Dr. Galen. She is a member of the prestigious Knitting Club, and is always concerned about appearances.
Cerek
Sub-chief of the Simian Security Police, Cerek is a young gorilla who is afraid that his mentor, Chief Marcus, is losing power with the council - and doesn't want his career to end along with Marcus', just as
Cerek's is starting.
The General of the Defense
You guys should know who this is...(not Ursus).
And there are more!

Everyone, please support this book! This has been a labor of love for the past four years, and I promise you will be entertained. The better the sales, the better the chance you will get all six books instead of just
two. I have invested a huge amount of money into the first book, and will be happy to just break even. Thanks in advance!

Sure thing Jess.
Te book sounds good, the illustrations we
have seen look great (although I’m a little worried about the colours on the
cover).
I’m also quite amused so far by the
characters mentioned by Drew.
All it needs to make it perfect is an
I did ask Drew about this and he explained
he is only going with recognized artists. Then when we did the article for the
Forbidden Zine, Drew sent me an exclusive from an unknown artist – so he does
break his own rules.
I’d like to ask everyone on this group to
unite in asking Drew to give Neil a chance to draw something for the second
novel. I’m fairly sure Neil would (as is typical) not even ask for payment but
surely it would not hurt for Drew to ask Neil to come up with something then if
it’s not good enough, just not use it?
So……I ask the Ape Fans on this group to unite and please respond in numbers if
you want to see an illustration by Neil in the second book.

.htmlYeah, adding some "new blood" is a good thing... That's always been an
argument of mine when people insist that they only want "Zira and Cornelius
stories" with no new characters... I'd point out that at one time Ursus was
"new", and later on Milo was "new", Caesar was "new", etc...
I don't even mind the "recycling" of characters from the RETURN novels...
First off, it sounds like they're not exactly who they were in their original
incarnations, but characters "based" on the previous ones... And second,
it's really no different than what the TV series did when they recycled
Zauis... Now the two Zaius characters are NOT the same, never were, but the TV
Zaius has some characteristics that are similar to the movie Zaius (and more
than anything else, I'd guess they'd used the Zaius name for some
familiarity)... And before the name change, Ursus was another character they were going
to "recycle" for the TV show albeit with some modifications... And another
plus is I'd guess a good number of people who will read it won't even know
who the originals are, so they're not blatantly being thrown out there for
some cheap name recognition...

Thanks man! The "recycled" characters are only so by their names, they were integral to my story and their names came about to tie in my theory about the different lanes of the
same highway for the various different ape series.
Cornelius has a small part in this book, as friend to Dr. Milo, and Zira only has a cameo. The two of them have massive parts in the second book.

In regards to the colors on the cover: Steranko is a master. He made some color changes because he was designing a retro poster. The cover is designed to evoke a retro feeling more than be
color accurate -check out some of the old posters for apes and other films from that time and you will find the same thing...

BTW- even the "newcomers" that are in the first book are published professionals - Dan Dussault is the artist of my grpaahic novel series, Critical Millennium, and Erik Gist has
done a ton of Forgotten Realms Novel covers.
I enjoy Neil's art and would love to have him for consideration for the second book, but if the publisher (ARCHAIA) or FOX nix it, please don't hate me or the project!
What about it Neil, you up to the challenge?

That’s precisely what Neil said and
I guess he’s the artist, but that cover…the original picture is so
good I really want to see it in natural colours….
But then I am very demanding….

Makes sense. The only thing I don't understand is
why Neil isn't a professional. I've seen a lot of "professional" garbage so
"professional" doesn't mean much to me. I'd rather go to a "fan"'s website done
with love (like Al's) than the "professional" vanilla one. The only difference
is a paycheck (though a big difference).

BTW- even the "newcomers" that are in the first book are published
professionals - Dan Dussault is the artist of my grpaahic novel series, Critical
Millennium, and Erik Gist has done a ton of Forgotten Realms Novel covers.
I enjoy Neil's art and would love to have him for consideration for the
second book, but if the publisher (ARCHAIA) or FOX nix it, please don't hate me
or the project!
What about it Neil, you up to the challenge? Drew

I've been looking around and I don't see any
"Rise" stuff announced, not even a novelization. If that stuff was planned there
should be some listed by now. There will be a soundtrack but that looks about
it. After the Burton merchandise gathering dust Fox seems to be just dipping
their toe in. If the film rocks and creates an ape-tite maybe it will be a
banananza for stuff based on classic "Apes". The trailers seem to be bringing
long ago fans out of the woodwork. <.html <.html

.htmlI figured you (understandably) couldn't say too much, but another question
regarding your stories: Will they all have an "end" to them or will they be
left open-ended so the reader would have to read the next book (or the
previous one) to get the complete jist of what's going on? In other words will
each book be a stand-alone novel that can be seen as a part of a larger story
arc (or read on it's own not feeling like a cliffhanger)?
