Each novel can be enjoyed on it's own - in fact, each story I've done can be enjoyed on it's own even if this is your first introduction to planet of the apes.
This is something I am pretty adamant about in story crafting- It really bothers me that we have things like an 'ultimate' universe - Where the company throws everything out and reinvent it because they want to
pull in new readers. They started this because writers say that there is too much continuity and it bogs them down. Then, you see them creating new things like say, " an alien race that the X-men in this universe
have known for years but you never saw them before. The back story is important that they were friends before this." Well, why not just use the SHi'ar? New readers will simply accept that the X-men will have
known these guys for a while, and fans will be happy to see something that THEY know the back story to. A diverse universe with a rich tapestry to draw upon is a great thing to start with.
So it's important to me that long time fans and new ones are entertained as well. If you read all six, you will become aware of a bigger picture I have created for you - but each one has an arc for the main
characters of that book that completes and then introduces the next "level", hooking you for the next book.
Hope that made sense, I am getting down from my soapbox now!

Here's a picture of Rocket, Caesar's chief ape
nemesis in "Rise". He's the alpha ape that Caesar has to take down a peg or two.
I hear their musical number, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" is a
stunner. But then, I hear all the songs rock, including "Yes, We Have No
Bananas" sung by Brian Cox.

Looks to be the
same trailer as the UK version (except for the language of
course!):
Looks great but
one thing that is starting to bug me a little bit is all the references to
'classic Apes' like the names of characters, Caesar writing 'JACOBS' etc. And
now I notice in this UK trailer Caesar just happens to be playing with/making a
model of the Statue of Liberty:
All these little
references are starting to get a little too cute for my liking, I hope they
aren't going to ruin what looks to be a top notch film.

the originals... We know what the originals are and what they contained, we
don't need to be clubbed over the head with them in a new film... One or
two is one thing, but the numerous amount I'm hearing about for this new film
is overkill... ***

.html
.html
The August 2011 issue of "SCI- FI" (the official
magazine of the Sci-fi Channel) has the first print article I've seen of "Rise
of the POTA". It doesn't seem to be on the internet so I guess this is my
exclusive. ; )
There's nothing really spoilery about it for
those who read my other posts, but for the squeamish about knowing anything
(touchy, isn't he?), be warned.
These interviews were done at the same time
as the other on-set interviews about a year ago but here they seem to be
implying that "Rise" IS a prequel to the original. The director says, "In this
film, we see television footage of the Icarus taking off from Earth, so that's a
clear reference to the 1968 film because that's the ship Charlton Heston and his
crew were on. We've also incorporated elements from ("Conquest"), in terms of
how the apes begin to revolt, but this is primarily a prequel to the 1968
film... Caesar is a revolutionary figure who will be talked about by his fellow
apes for centuries... This is just the first step in the evolution of the apes,
and there's a lot more stories to tell after this. I imagine the next film will
be about the all-out war between the apes and humans".
I still say it won't completely work as a prequel
to the original because the original Taylor was a 21st Century astronaut. As
well as all the knowing references like Landon, Dodge, etc. It just wouldn't
work in a timeline I subscribe to. But it could leave an opening for a remake of
the original down the road. The creators seem kind of wishy washy about the
prequel thing. Maybe they just want fans to have their cake and eat it too for
now.
Anyway, director Rupert Wyatt certainly has taken
the original to heart: "The 1968 film clearly represented the culture of it's
time and I think our film does too. Our story takes place in a world of
corporate pollution, economic unrest, the war on terrorism, and on and on. In
this film we're planting the seeds for how our civilization came to an end and
how a new civilization, a new world ape order, could rise to
power".
The writer, Rick Jaffa, talks about the evolution
of "Rise": "The way I work is that I gather a lot of ideas and magazine articles
and just spread them on the living room floor and try to find my inspiration,
and that's what happened with "Rise of the POTA". I read a really moving,
powerful article in GQ about a man who was attacked by his pet chimp, and it was
such a great article that inspired me to want to do a story about the
relationship between man and Mother Nature, and especially about people raising
chimps. Eventually, I realized that the theme of the article, of nature fighting
back, was similar to the theme of POTA and that the two might be
compatible".
I guess he thought of doing a new take on "Apes"
because the franchise was in the toilet post- POTA2001. But he brought it to Fox
(in 2006) and "we started talking about how we could arrange the dominoes to
show what led to the events of the 1968 film, and we thought it would be
interesting. Looking back, I think Amanda (Silver) and I could've made a
non-"Apes" film, but I'm glad we did this because the last scene in the 1968
film represents exactly the kind of story I wanted to tell. The apes didn't put
Charlton Heston on the beach, man did. And I wanted to explore that kind of
hubris, and the idea of nature fighting back. It wasn't as if the Charlton
Heston character was the most sympathetic in the world. In fact, he was a real
ass".
And then the story developed from there, with
Caesar as the engine: "I look at Caesar as being the Che Guevara type of
revolutionary figure. Other elements in the script evolved over time, such as
the Alzheimer's element, which wasn't in the original story but was developed
over 3 or 4 drafts of the script. The one constant idea throughout is that we're
going to hell in a hand-basket and that Charlton Heston was right when he said
that man had really gone and done it".
Like the director, Jaffa also hints here it's a
prequel (though he said it was it's own thing in other interviews): "There is a
war in this film, a riot, and an epic climax on the Golden Gate Bridge, but it's
not quite the nuclear type of war that's destined to follow. We definitely think
this story is a great platform for future films and that's why we're only
showing the early stages of the ape uprising because we think this is an
interesting story".
As for star James Franco's two cents on the
originals, he says, "some of those were really campy. I definitely think the
1968 film is a classic. I also watched a great film called "Koko: The Talking
Gorilla" from director Barbet Schroeder, which was really interesting. I
also did a lot of research in terms of genetic engineering and apes". Franco got
right in tune with the production: "When I heard WETA was doing the effects, and
that the cinematographer from "Lord of the Rings", Andrew Lesnie, was shooting
the film, it made me very comfortable. Andy Serkis is great". As for the
concept: "I see this film as very much a Frankenstein kind of story... Will's a
tragic figure because his actions lead to the destruction of mankind, although
his intentions were very good in terms of wanting to save his father".
Director Wyatt concurs: "The film doesn't argue
against science and technology and the great strides that have been made with
genetic engineering. This story is about what happens when Man goes too far...
The story is about a scientist, a good man, who's driven to become the next Dr.
Frankenstein, and the real reasons he has for doing that, which are personal
reasons combined with some hubris. I think the story also has elements of "The
Elephant Man" and the John Merrick story in terms of how we deal with freaks in
our society". He also says, "The lab was somewhat modeled after "All the
President's Men" just in terms of the movement throughout it and the intense
feeling you get in there, although we also studied many real labs".
The original films were a source of inspiration
for "Rise" but Burton's version was less so. A popular joke on the set was: "How
many POTA2001s does it take to screw in a light bulb?" The answer:
"Theoretically, a movie can't change a light bulb but it only takes one POTA2001
to screw over an audience". AH HA! HA! HA! HA! OK, I made that up, but producer
Dylan Clark has his own sense of humor: "Was there a remake of POTA? No,
seriously, I don't think anyone was very happy with the last film, even though
it was a financial success. When the movie came out, you could feel the ill-will
among the fan base, and I shared that feeling. With this film, I think we have a
chance to create a smart tent-pole franchise, much like what happened with "The
Dark Knight", which was a big inspiration for this project, just in terms of how
smart that film was".
Also, congrats to "Rise" producers Dylan Clark
and Peter Chernin. They run Chernin Entertainment (the C E logo at the beginning
of the trailers) and "Rise" is their first production out of the gate. They are
mainly based at Fox but it was announced today that they are doing their
(first?) project outside of Fox, the big Tom Cruise sci-fi movie "Oblivion"
for Universal. Hopefully "Rise" rocks so we can look forward to
that.

It's interesting to think of what kind of baggage

Not only is there a new POTA movie coming soon
(and possible sequels) but there's becoming a cottage industry of movies about
POTA people. There's "Argo", about John Chambers trying to rescue hostages,
James Franco is making a bio about Sal Mineo, and now a Rod Serling movie is
being written. Serling of course was a writer on the original POTA. The movie is
being written by Stanley Weiser, who went to film school with Oliver Stone and
wound up writing "Wall Street" and "W.". The director is Andrew Meieran
("Highland Park") and it's being produced by Serling's wife Carol.

In an inspired offshoot from "Rise of the POTA",
director Rupert Wyatt and actor Andy (Caesar) Serkis are considering filming an
adaptation of the classic "Animal Farm" using the same performance capture stuff
that will soon make you believe apes can be revolting. George Orwell's novel
uses the revolt of farm animals to make pointed political comments and was even
given a nod in the original POTA (Some apes are more equal than others). This
would be a great companion piece to "Rise" in particular and would probably be
even more appropriate for CG than the more realistic apes. Of course, where
Wyatt's career goes has a lot to do with how "Rise" does. Right now he looks to
be doing the British TV miniseries "The Echo Chamber" next. And of course a
successful "Rise" might necessitate getting into sequel mode. Can't put the cart

| Subject: Will the Apes' box office "Rise" to $ 1 billion? |
.html
.html
Already this Summer of the Apes a movie has
reached the exclusive box office club of $1 billion worldwide. This past weekend
"Pirates 4" ("Strange Tides" or something) passed the $ 1 billion mark. That
makes 8 films in that membership ("Pirates" is now the only franchise with 2
entries in there). They are: 1. "Avatar"; 2. "Titanic"; 3. "Lord of the Rings:
Return of the King"; 4. "Dead Man's Chest" (Pirates 2? 3?); 5. "Toy Story 3"; 6.
"Alice in Wonderland" (Hi Tim!); 7. "Pirates 4"; 8. "The Dark
Knight".
Will "Rise of the POTA" join that group? It would
be insane to assume so. For starters, it won't be released in 3D, and many of
those movies had inflated results from the higher 3D prices (the US has tired of
3D but it's just getting warmed up in some countries); also, most of those films
take place in alternative settings, fantasy lands or the past. "Rise" takes
place in modern times and in mundane everyday settings. The only film on that
list that comes close is "The Dark Knight" (which the "Rise" creators said is
their model). And of course most of them are sequels to recent movies, which
"Rise" is not.
On the plus side, #1 and # 3 have effects by
WETA; #1 and #2 were directed by James Cameron, who has worked extensively with
the editors of "Rise". #6 was directed by a dude who also did a POTA movie.
And...that's all I've got.
So, no, "Rise of the POTA" won't make $ 1
billion. What were you thinking?! And yet...did we expect any of these movies to
join the Billionaire Club? "Avatar" was a laughing stock before it started
raking in the dough. "Titanic" looked to be a REAL disaster. "Alice in
Wonderland"? Really? So anything can happen in the crazy business of
movies.
The dice rolls in a
month. <.html <.html

I was at Fox's "Rise" preview at CalTech. Here's
how it went down.
First of all, while in our seats waiting for it
to start, I think (but I can't be sure) they played the soundtrack for the
movie. It sounded similar to Patrick Doyle's "Thor" music, but with primitive
drums and some weird horns. Kind of like Goldsmith's score but with Doyle's
romantic sensibilities.
The moderator was David Cohen of Daily Variety.
He introduced the director, Rupert Wyatt. Wyatt started by introducing the
International Trailer # 2, which was cool to see on a big movie screen. Then he
showed some of their "Rise" research: footage of Oliver the humanzee, who walked
from the hips like we do; a chimp remembering numbers in sequence; and a
chimp playing Pac Man.
Then the clips. Wyatt mentioned they chose CG
because they really couldn't use people in makeup to portray the apes as they
wanted them, and it would have been ironic to use real apes in a story about ape
abuse. The first clip was pretty intense, showing them trying to corral their
test subject Bright Eyes (Caesar's mother) for the presentation Will is
currently doing ("the cure for Alzheimer's"). Bright Eyes goes berserk and ruins
Will's big moment. Really an impressive scene.
Clip Two is the boss Jacobs' decision to have the
apes put down after the disaster with Bright Eyes. They do away with the apes
and Will's assistant Franklin tells Will he discovered Bright Eyes was only
protecting her baby, Caesar. Will reluctantly agrees to take Caesar
home. He does so and introduces him to his dad.
Clip Three: Some Lithgow stuff. The breakfast
scene where Caesar shows him how to hold a fork. Also the scene where the
neighbor picks on Lithgow and Caesar comes to the rescue (no face ripping).
Animal Control takes Caesar to the ape "sanctuary" to hold the dangerous animal.
The next scene is sad as Will has to leave Caesar behind. Also introduces Brian
Cox and Tom Felton as the lousy human bastards.
Clip Four: A cool scene where Tom Felton is
showing off to his friends, teasing the apes, and Caesar turns the
tables.
These are pretty lengthy clips so we got to
see how the actual scenes play out rather than just a slice and dice
trailer. Some really powerful stuff. Looks like the film has the goods. Fox is
big on releasing scenes on the internet (at least they did with the recent
"X-Men") so some of this stuff might turn up this week. Also there was a lot of
press out front so there might be some reports about this.
Then WETA's Joe Letteri was introduced to talk
about the FX. He could bring up whatever behind the scenes stuff he wanted on
his laptop and it was shown on the screen. Showed us a scene we just saw of
Caesar being brought into the sanctuary but with Andy Serkis playing it, then
the scene again with his CG counterpart. He showed a side by side
comparison of Serkis and Caesar so we could see how Serkis' emotions translate
directly to Caesar. And he showed a shot he thought was "cool" of Maurice the
orangutan moving past Caesar.
Joe showed a clip of what looked like a DVD extra
that spotlighted Andy Serkis' work. Then Andy was introduced, who appeared live
from London via Skype. Andy talked about how primitive the technology was when
he played Gollum in "Lord of the Rings". The moderator mentioned Caesar's
long, dexterous fingers and Serkis said he could portray that, pointing out
the fork scene and when Caesar opens the cure canister.
The first shot WETA did was that overused
shot in the trailers of Caesar looking devious and that shot sold
Serkis that CG could work.
He said Caesar was a bigger challenge to portray
than Gollum. He mentioned this was the first time they could take the
Performance capture stuff out on location and do scenes with the other actors.
He said he looks forward to the day when he can do the scenes without all the
technical stuff and head gear and believes that day is coming.
He mentioned he often got asked why he was
playing another ape after King Kong and said he looked at them as different
roles, not as apes. He looked at them as characters.
Andy mentioned what was said in "Behind the POTA"
about the actors having to overact with their face to make the makeup come alive
and said the great thing about performance capture is that the actor doesn't
have to worry about makeup and can just act.
Next was introduced Clare Richardson of the Dian
Fossey Gorilla Fund. She said she liked that the film will portray apes as
complex creatures but was concerned about portraying the apes as scary and
violent (humans are the most violent primates). When the apes in the movie cut
loose it can be pretty intense. She mentioned the dwindling # of apes and the
only ape population that's increasing is the mountain gorillas (there's about
800 in the world). Andy Serkis visited the mountain gorillas that Dian Fossey
studied when he was researching King Kong and now he's on the Dian Fossey board,
so Clare knew him and was glad he was portraying Caesar. The moderator mentioned
that the sanctuary in the film has a lot of ape has beens (a former circus
performer, a former space program ape) and she talked about the poor
treatment of ape professionals when they are past their prime.
Steven Quartz, the professor of psychology at
CalTech, was introduced and talked about the Kelloggs raising a chimp in their
home, kind of the Project Nim of the '30's (Wyatt said besides the humanzee,
Project Nim was also a big influence on the movie).
The audience wrote down questions to be asked.
Most were for Andy, who hung out for most of the show even though it was late in
London.
Do apes cry? Quartz said we know they mourn but
we don't know if they shed tears.
Someone asked whose side the filmmakers
were on, the apes or the humans. Andy had on a shirt of a chimp and the word
"Revolution" and showed it to the Skype camera to big laughs.
Why can't performance capture actors get acting
nominations? Because there's a misunderstanding of what performance capture
is.
Doing the movie in 3D was never discussed with
Fox and Wyatt feels this is more a personal story that wouldn't benefit. It was
enough of a challenge as it is.
Someone asked if they will ever do a movie
where a realistic CG human is the star. Joe said there's no point, since the
goal is human connection so they'd be better off with a real actor. If they came
to him with an idea that would specifically need that, he'd be glad to do it.
Mentioned "Tron 2" and sometimes CG humans are used for too dangerous
stunts.
Someone asked if anyone is signed for sequels and
Andy said he isn't.
They used my question of whether this is a direct
prequel to the original film or are they going to retell it (since Heston's ship
"the Icarus" has a cameo in the film). Once again Wyatt said this and the
sequels will lead up to that film but "Rise" takes place in modern times, not
1968. So I guess it's a prequel.
When it was over I met Rupert and Joe. They
signed my copy of Eric Greene's book, which has been signed by many an Ape
vet (Wyatt's a nice guy who said he was "honored" to sign it when he
saw who else did). He was enthusiastic when
I mentioned the Moses similarities in the story (Caesar is spared, is
raised in privilege, gets sent back to his own kind and leads them to freedom)
and it was obvious those were his thoughts too. He definitely sees this as the
era that creates the apes' religious icons. I thanked Rupert for taking the
concept seriously and told him that's what the fans want. Joe likewise was very
approachable and friendly.
It was an incredible evening and with the Dian
Fossey rep and the professor it felt like a full meal. The scenes shown suggest
this will be a powerful movie, well directed.

have to worry about makeup and can just act.

With the original POTA playing in New York, two NY
publications look back at it.
"The Wall Street Journal" interviews Richard
Zanuck from the set of Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows":
And here's why POTA outlived it's

There was a ton of press outside the auditorium
where the event took place. Rupert Wyatt said this is the first time scenes from
the movie have been shown to the public. Here are a couple of
write-ups.
This includes some pictures and a video on the
red carpet:
No less than the Hollywood Reporter is asking if
"Rise" will finally get Andy Serkis an acting nomination (which would be
historic):

Just thinkin' 'bout what I saw at the "Rise"
event at CalTech. It's pretty amazing that POTA keeps raising it's head every
ten years. In 1991 the Adventure comics bought it back to life just when I
wanted to return (yeah, it was also around in 1990 and 1992 but 1991 was it's
only full year). Adventure gets it's knocks but I thought a lot of it was
pretty good: the early issues of the main series, most of the miniseries. The
main thing is that's all there was. Rumors about a new movie (directed by Adam
Rifkin), no internet, for most of it not even a fanzine. So even at it's worst I
was glad to have it and I was hopeful about the POTA future.
Then there was a decade of heady movie
development (Oliver Stone! James Cameron! Tim Burton!). That culminated of
course in Burton's POTA2001. I said at the time and I say it now, I don't hate
it. There's a lot of good in that movie and I think with what's coming, fans
will have a healthier attitude toward it, when the Burton film isn't what the
public first thinks of when they think POTA.
And now here we are in 2011, and I'm one of the
first people on the "planet" to see actual scenes from "Rise" (because I'm
awesome) and it feels like what we've been waiting for. "Rise" has been very
ignored this summer but now the word is going to get out, with the Hollywood
Reporter already wondering if this will get Andy Serkis acting nominations. One
of the comments that keep getting made on the internet is that the apes don't
look real. Well, I've seen the scene with Caesar's mother (Chimp 9 in the
trailers) and I can say the apes are as real as WETA wants to make them.
The first scene they showed us is a jaw dropper. If the rest of the movie
lives up to what I've seen, this movie is going to give POTA it's "Lord of
the Rings" moment (meaning the movies, and no wonder considering many LOTR
people were involved).
And the director is a gem, researching everything
and taking it seriously. I remember Marky Mark, I mean Mr. Walhberg saying he
asked Tim Burton if he should study astronauts and Tim said basically not to
bother. Rupert Wyatt said these films are a lead in to the original movie
and I would usually think he's just saying what fans want to hear. But not with
him. I totally trust POTA in his hands. He's thought this stuff through. He's
the real deal. If anything, his sincerity might hurt it at the box office but I
hope not.
Fans are jaded and I don't blame them. But I just
want to give some hope based on my lucky experience. It's been a long time
coming but 20 years later maybe POTA has arrived (again).
Time to celebrate. Hit it, Pete!

Here's video diary # 2 for "The Hobbit" featuring
Andy "Caesar" Serkis and Peter "Roddy's choice for POTA" Jackson. They've
finished their first "block" of filming and will reconvene on Sept. 15 to
continue. Yeah, they're filming a movie called "The Hobbit" but I like to think
of it as a great big laboratory to develop tech for POTA sequels.
"Hobbit" # 1 hits Dec. 2012 and "Hobbit" # 2 hits
Dec. 2013.

Franco was interviewed by "Playboy" magazine and
commented a bit on going ape. He feels the film might suffer from people having
their knives out for him (it's open season on Franco post-Oscars, plus his last
film bombed, plus all the overexposure). He also seems more detached from the
film, considering himself an actor for hire and saying they did reshoots to make
it more action -oriented (though he hasn't seen the movie yet). Usually comments
like that would worry me, but having seen footage I'm not worried (yet) and
Franco is solid in it.
