Fox has been releasing some "research" footage
(without any mention of "Rise") to the internet. The latest is about chimps
using machetes.

There's almost nothing worse in California than
the closing of a major freeway, even if only for a couple days. Such is the
situation with the 405, dubbed "Car-mageddon". In their continuing search for
unique ways to promote "Rise of the POTA", Fox let the apes take over the
405:
And here's an article that mentions the
promotion:

We know that "Rise of the POTA" will be rated
PG-13... but why? For "intense and frightening sequences of action and violins".
What?! Who cares what kind of instruments the
composer uses to make his music?! That's ridiculous! Now they've gone too
far.
Oh, wait. It says "action and violENCE". That
makes more sense. Never mind.
At least you prudes won't have to worry about sex
or naughty words. That's a f*cking relief!

On reading this it occured to me that
Burton 's POTA and Rise could probably fit
together quite easily... just a thought.

I think it looks great – far better
than that last awful attempt!
The point is to bring it to a new
generation.
The feeling I get when I finally hear my
kids say “This looks great” is hard to describe but it’s a
wonderful feeling. It’s like they have that same excitement I had
so long ago.
The real point is to make money but remember
Mike it brings great things with it. It brings CLASSIC apes products to the
market.
We have the Graphic Novel coming and after
hearing the ideas for the next 5 I’m even more hooked than I ever was! The
new comic – the art pains me but the story is going to be OK I think so it
could be worse…
More dollies soon? I HOPE SO!!! J
It also makes more sense that CONQUEST from what I see. Back in the day we
didn’t have the capacity to sit and analyze things over and over as we do
now…..I was talking to Neil the other day laughing about our CASSETTE TAPE
recordings of some of the movies!!! The quality was AWFUL but I played them
OVER AND OVER!!! Then I got the BENEATH video tape on BETA and watched it
a million times. I think I was so grateful for seeing the movies that I would
not dare to criticize it or look for (or even acknowledge!) flaws…..but kids
these days just jump on our beloved inconsistencies and tear them apart.
So bring it on! Make it good, give the
sequels more solid ground to build on and keep serious about the scripts. Let’s
have a new POTA movie with the same regularity as a new X Men movie and let the
new generation wait with baited breath for the next thing apes…..our plot-holed
outdated flicks ain’t gonna do it for them!

It's not pointless, if it's a good story. Good
stories last.
And no FX are perfect, not even Chambers' beloved
makeup (*cough*Ursus' audience*cough*). Mostly it's not CG, except for the apes.
It looks less like a video game than "Transformers" or "Harry Potter". Actually,
the apes look pretty incredible to me.

Good question, especially since the director says
these are definitely prequels leading up to the original. I think they will
continue with the CG, though. They are comfortable with it and it allows a lot
of freedom on the set. It would be cool if they switched over to makeup at
some point as they got closer to the original. Also it'll be interesting to see
how CG improves over the next decade as they make them.

Probably CGI has become cheaper as it's become a
standard of the industry. It's probably cheaper than spending shooting time
getting the makeup right and building stuff. That's why a lot of big movies just
take place in front of green screens. Actors who've done it seem to love it
because they don't have to wear all that makeup.

Some folks at USC are working on a way to use
Twitter to predict box office. The graph in the article shows both positive and
negative references to each movie. And it seems to work. Both "Harry Potter" and
"Transformers" had a lot of activity and that interest is born out in the box
office ("Harry" is breaking records and "Transformers" is already at $ 700
million worldwide, so $ 1 billion seems guaranteed). But it probably doesn't
take a genius to figure that.
"Cowboys and Aliens" is at the other end of the
spectrum but that's always been considered the long shot. "Rise" is somewhere in
the "X-Men"/"Green Lantern"/"Super 8" area. "Captain America" is doing very well
on this chart and opens this week.
I don't think the marketing of "Rise" has been
all it could be, but we'll see if they rally over the next 3 weeks as the other
blockbusters fall away.

I'm calling it. Ape Season begins this Thursday
(July 21st) at Comic-Con when there's a panel on POTA comics plus whatever
Fox is planning for "Rise" (sounds like a panel; Freida Pinto is scheduled,
among others). The "Rise" soundtrack hits July 26th. The Changing of the
Guard is July 27th when POTA2001 turns 10 and steps down. The Ape marathon
in Philly is July 31st. And then August 5th looks like a good day to go to the
movies.
Ape season. Say goodbye to your family, give up
your worldly possessions and Go Ape. No excuses!

Eventually, most likely--but not for a couple of years, as I'm working on other books at the moment. That way, I can incorporate Rise, its inevitable sequel (if they make one), the BOOM!
comics, any other tie-ins to Rise, and so forth. When the time comes for a second edition, I plan to approach the timeline book very differently, as a series of timelines instead of all grouped together.

There's a good feature in August's Empire Magazine aswell. Mostly interviews with Wyatt and Serkis, and a nice group shot of the ape performers.
Wyatt sez: "We had to ask ourselves, do we want to, for example, mention Icarus, because does that therefore mean we're referencing a film that actually we're saying doesn't exist? In the original POTA
the Icarus mission happened in 1972, and we're saying it happened between 2010 and 2016. But yeah, we're definitely using that as a backdrop." The originals themselves, however, aren't being used as
reference, to any great degree.
I had assumed, when they mentioned TV footage of the Icarus, that maybe they were going to show it as vintage footage from 1972, just to keep the options open... apparently not.

Anyone know of any POTA actors who recorded music? Apart from Marky Mark, all I can think of off the top of my head is that James Naughton and John Lithgow both put out albums about 10
years ago. Surely some of the vast cast 'did a Leonard Nimoy' back in the 60s/70s? <.html

I’m thinking make-up.
But mainly because I think it’s cheaper
to do this than it is to have Jar-Jars everywhere.
Know what I mean?

Good question, especially since the director says
these are definitely prequels leading up to the original. I think they will
continue with the CG, though. They are comfortable with it and it allows a lot
of freedom on the set. It would be cool if they switched over to makeup at
some point as they got closer to the original. Also it'll be interesting to see
how CG improves over the next decade as they make them.

Another interesting question.....
….Neil and I were debating whether they will continue with
CGI or go with makeup if the sequels have more apes (I am guessing most of RISE
is humans until a 15-20 revolution at the end).
Makeup or CGI?

It's not pointless, if it's a good story. Good stories last.
And no FX are perfect, not even Chambers' beloved makeup (*cough*Ursus'
audience*cough*). Mostly it's not CG, except for the apes. It looks less like a
video game than "Transformers" or "Harry Potter". Actually,
the apes look pretty incredible to me.

My
expectations for this film (ROTPOTA) aren't too high... I'll probably
see it, but I sort of agree with a comment I read where the writer said it
looks like a 90s video game... Plus, a "prequel" or
"reboot" to a 43 year old
film really is kind of pointless...

.htmlPer the seller: I have recently been presented
with a unique opportunity to offer a limited number of castings of a
very rare and iconic piece. A friend of mine had this screen-used
fiberglass LawGiver casting in his collection for several years. This
is/was the hero casting as seen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. It
still had the tubes attached to the eye where it wept "blood" in the
final scenes of the movie. Not long ago he sold his screen used casting
and it was later auctioned by Profiles in History (fetching close to
$30,000!).
This is the screen-used casting sold by Profiles
Prior
to it leaving his hands he had it molded, as he wanted to keep a
casting for his own personal collection. The mold was cast in what is
known in the industry as a "waste mold" and has some air bubbles on the
back of the mold. These are actually very minor and considering they are
in the back of the hair, they are easy to clean-up with a little Dremel
work. In addition to this, the casting has a seam running from
ear-to-ear (over the top of the head) that you would have to
putty/clean-up. Outside of that, the castings I have run are great and
picked up all the detail of the original.
The replicas I am
offering are cast in a lightweight, yet strong hand-laid fiberglass with
a high quality epoxy gel-coat. These are a surprisingly large piece,
measuring approximately 15" wide, 27" tall and 14" deep. There will only
be 12 of these rare castings offered, directly from the hero prop.
Price is $650 plus shipping

tried making that for "today's audience" and people were pretty disappointed
with the results... Hopefully they don't make the same mistake twice, but with
their leading actor and all of the "cute references" that will be in the new
film it looks like they might be going down the same path... I'm not really
against ROTPOTA, but it doesn't look like it's a must see either... The
only good thing about it so far is that FOX isn't trying to brush the originals
under the rug like they did when the 2001 version was going to come out...

production? If that's the case, it's just a coincidence that the novel and
the film are being released in the same time frame... The new comic may be
more of an item being brought to market in hopes of cashing in... (I agree
with the art in it, there's some good stuff but the Burtonesque stuff makes no
sense in a story supposedly set in the same timeline as post BATTLE...) ***

*** I agree with this to an extent, but it still has apes becoming smarter
than normal in a very short time... In CONQUEST, the apes went from wild
animals to revolting servants in 9 years more or less, but in RISE, they'll go
from being wild animals to revolting lab specimens in an even shorter time
(I think Veetus said the film takes place in a 7-10 year span?)... Being
treated with an Alzheimer's "cure" which makes them intelligent is almost as
much of a stretch as their intelligence being raised due to
conditioning/training... The way their intelligence is raised in RISE might make a little more
sense, but the end result (revolting in a ridiculously short time) is the
same... ***
> .but kids these days just jump on our beloved inconsistencies and tear

*** Then they shouldn't watch the STAR WARS films: The way Lucas keeps
toying with those and changing histories makes anything in the APES films look
like slight continuity errors... Anyway, it's not just the APES films that
kids might rip apart, it's probably anything made before the 90s that they
could find issue(s) with... Who cares if a bunch of younger people find fault
with the films, those same ones probably find faults with older music, TV,
etc... People are going to like them or not, and it's not so much their age
it's their attitude toward them... There were pople in the 70s pretty much
acting like they're schlock so not much has changed in 40 years... ***

and serious as you're saying, but I'm guessing they'll go the way of a lot
of the films today and look completely like video-games or they'll be made
in whatever style is the current fad (like 3-D)... They'll probably become a
showcase for the current film making techniques and the rest will be
secondary... ***</HTML> <.html

Eventually, most likely--but not for a couple of years, as I'm working on
other books at the moment. That way, I can incorporate Rise, its inevitable
sequel (if they make one), the BOOM! comics, any other tie-ins to Rise, and so
forth. When the time comes for a second edition, I plan to approach the timeline
book very differently, as a series of timelines instead of all grouped
together.

‘RISE OF THE PLANET OF
THE APES’ IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE AUGUST 5,
2011

July 20th, 2011 - Los
Angeles, CA - The next episode in the free online digital
comic book prequel to Twentieth Century Fox’s epic motion
picture RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, debuts today at
www.apescomics.com—coming
just two weeks before the picture’s release in theaters across
the world on August 5. The comic, with the first episode
debuting last Wednesday on July 13th and whose story is set
before the events detailed in the film, presents an epic tale
of two apes brutally taken from the wild and driven into a
life of captivity and experimentation — a journey that will
alter the fate of the world forever.
The acclaimed PLANET OF THE APES
comic series writer Daryl Gregory and sensational artists
Damian Couceiro (HAWKS OF OUTREMER) and Tony Parker (DO
ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?) set the stage for… RISE OF
THE PLANET OF THE APES, the first live-action film in the
history of movies to star and be told from the point of view
of a sentient animal — a character with human-like qualities,
who can strategize, organize and ultimately lead a revolution,
and with whom audiences will experience a real emotional bond.
The film was impossible to make until the technology, invented
for Avatar and now advanced to a new dimension, caught up to
the idea behind the movie.
Every Wednesday since the online
digital comic's debut will see a free five page RISE OF THE
PLANET OF THE APES digital comic book story premiere on
www.apescomics.com
. Having debuted on July 13th, today
marks the second installment, with next Wednesday July 27th
seeing another 5 page installment leading up to the final 10
page epic conclusion on August 3rd, two days before the film’s
release!
“Fan
outpouring for the initial debut of www.apescomics.com has
been overwhelming,” says BOOM! Studios Founder and Chief
Executive Officer Ross Richie. “It's great to work closely
with Fox to tell a prelude story in the fantastic and
story-rich world of the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. If you
haven't had a chance to read the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE
APES free online prequel — you don't know what you are
missing!”
In
April BOOM! Studios announced they were publishing an all new
ongoing PLANET OF THE APES comics series set in the original
classic 1968 movie continuity. Subsequently, a flurry of fan
interest caused a complete sell-out of PLANET OF THE APES #1,
sending the seminal issue into second print even before
hitting store shelves!

This is a not-so-blatant reference to POTA 1968. I'm still not a fan of references at all. Usually references make it seem like they're trying to be clever and cute, but
they almost always come off as contrived. This one isn't so bad, though. In fact, maybe it wasn't even intentional.

The Varese Sarabande website now has an August
16th release date for the "Rise of the POTA" soundtrack. On the plus side they
now list the tracks.
Well, they'll lose the impulse buys before
the movie comes out so I guess the movie and score better deliver.

Fox didn't really seem to make a big
splash at Comic Con with the new "Apes" movie; they didn't drag in the
stars or anything ("Prometheus", Ridley Scott's first science-fiction flick in
30 years, seemed to make a bigger impression at the presentation). But they
did bring in "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt and Andy Serkis to field questions.
All the footage shown has already debuted on the internet (the Lithgow clip, the
rallying the troops clip, the new "sizzle reel").
And here's the "sizzle reel" on easier to watch
youtube:

Here's that ape actors group shot frm Empire Mag, and also a suspiciously timely article I spotted in a national newspaper here.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In the original
POTA the Icarus mission happened in 1972, and we're saying it happened between 2010 and 2016. But yeah, we're definitely using that as a backdrop." The originals themselves, however, aren't being used
as reference, to any great degree.
I had assumed, when they mentioned TV footage of the Icarus, that maybe they were going to show it as vintage footage from 1972, just to keep the options open... apparently not. <.html

Glad to be a part of this excellent Planet of the Apes Forum. I have been a huge fan of these films since I was a kid. Extremely excited about Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it looks very promising
I quite like the various nods to the previous films. Did anyone catch that wink to Jerry Goldsmith in the trailer, the music morphs into that eerie classic tone from Planet
while Caesar is on the examination table.
Look forward to chatting about this fabulous franchise and discussing Rise with all of you.

Forgive me if I have not been too active on the forums. I've been
deleting most of the messages on the groups that has any hint of new

many trailers and clips I think the studio has already given away a bit
too much and I just wanted to avoid any more spoilers, intentional or not.

Considering that Serkis seems to be employed pretty much full-time in promoting this film and its FX, I'd be surprised if they changed the formula for a sequel. Unless he gets killed at
the end, which is unlikely. I don't think a first sequel would happen without Wyatt, Serkis and Weta, though from what Franco has said, he mightn't be interested. Maybe he'd just agree to be in the opening
scene, then blow up the world at the end?
