Do you guys want to see photos?  So very busy that I forgot to take many photos and it's a damned shame because the makeup was the best yet after years of trying.  Wore the second sculpt of Zira appliance which corrected the faults of the first one.

I managed to wrangle an invite to the press preview screening a few days before general release. The exciting part is it'll be my first big-screen apes experience, the less exciting thing is that almost the entire world outside of Ireland will have already seen it by then anyway (8th August)...

I get the feeling a sequel would take place after Caesar's lifetime, to make it believable the playing field is leveled. But they could still use Serkis.

Considering that Serkis seems to be employed pretty much full-time in promoting this film and its FX, I'd be surprised if they changed the formula for a sequel. Unless he gets killed at the end, which is unlikely. I don't think a first sequel would happen without Wyatt, Serkis and Weta, though from what Franco has said, he mightn't be interested. Maybe he'd just agree to be in the opening scene, then blow up the world at the end?

Here's an interview with Andy Serkis, talking about his 3 current projects. Besides playing Caesar in "Apes" and reprising Gollum in "The Hobbit", he also plays Capt. Haddock in Spielberg's new movie "Tintin" (with FX by WETA). But he considers Caesar his masterpiece to date. While he was in town for Comic Con he also took in the San Diego Zoo. Maybe researching an "Apes" sequel?

Three additional photos of the casts that are ready to be shipped out.

Per the seller: I have recently been presented with a unique opportunity to offer a limited number of castings of a very rare and iconic piece. A friend of mine had this screen-used fiberglass LawGiver casting in his collection for several years. This is/was the hero casting as seen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. It still had the tubes attached to the eye where it wept "blood" in the final scenes of the movie. Not long ago he sold his screen used casting and it was later auctioned by Profiles in History (fetching close to $30,000!).

This is the screen-used casting sold by Profiles

Prior to it leaving his hands he had it molded, as he wanted to keep a casting for his own personal collection. The mold was cast in what is known in the industry as a "waste mold" and has some air bubbles on the back of the mold. These are actually very minor and considering they are in the back of the hair, they are easy to clean-up with a little Dremel work. In addition to this, the casting has a seam running from ear-to-ear (over the top of the head) that you would have to putty/clean-up. Outside of that, the castings I have run are great and picked up all the detail of the original.

The replicas I am offering are cast in a lightweight, yet strong hand-laid fiberglass with a high quality epoxy gel-coat. These are a surprisingly large piece, measuring approximately 15" wide, 27" tall and 14" deep. There will only be 12 of these rare castings offered, directly from the hero prop.

Price is $650 plus shipping

Considering that Serkis seems to be employed pretty much full-time in promoting this film and its FX, I'd be surprised if they changed the formula for a sequel. Unless he gets killed at the end, which is unlikely. I don't think a first sequel would happen without Wyatt, Serkis and Weta, though from what Franco has said, he mightn't be interested. Maybe he'd just agree to be in the opening scene, then blow up the world at the end?

      Nah – it’s a fan thing.

When you read the intro it concludes with: “with a sprinkling of images from our own 1970s fan film CONRELIUS AND ZIRA and other ape impersonators”

Near the bottom there’s some fan makeup with Jackie Lawrence and Ernest Morris – maybe it’s them?

They are now showing the running time as 1hrs 45min at my local cinema.
So what is the correct running time?

Well at least you have not been blacklisted by anyone who is important!  For example it’s great news that Drew is going to give you a chance to illustrate for the next book!

Has he mentioned what you are going to be illustrating yet?

The Australia area gets to "Rise" early (Aug. 4rth) so the movie has screened for some media there and First Showing has tried to round up some of the comments (mostly via Twitter). Sounds promising, so hopefully Fox will set up some screenings as soon as possible so the word gets out before the big weekend. So far the ear to the ground research suggests the main interest is with older males of the original Ape era. There's still a lot of selling to do with women and the younger set (modern movie selling breaks the audience into 4 "quadrants": young males, young females, older males, older females; you want to hit as many of those quadrants as possible).
With the success of WETA stuff like "Lord of the Rings" and "Avatar" this would seem to be a slam dunk but apparently not. It sounds like it has the emotional kind of story that sci-fi adverse women might like, and it's got the action and CG the youngins love, so get selling, Fox!

Doesn't surprise me at all and it's a bit sad to see some of these old geezers on various forums and websites already going 'apeshit' with delight and reading things into a film they have yet to see.

On the plus side, all of my kids (who still laugh at the original makeups!) have seen the trailers and want to see this version of Apes as they think it looks fantastic.

I agree, I've read a few to many posts where this film is being touted as
      the greatest one since PLANET...

I'll probably see it, but I'm not overly enthusiastic about it... I still
don't see the reason to make a "prequel" to a 43 year old film... If it was
being made as a starting point for it's own franchise it'd probably be
received a little better... But trying to tie it in (even if indirectly) to the
original PLANET is kind of dumb, especially since two of the new films
characters ("Dodge" and "Landon") are named after two of the original films
      secondary astronauts...

Ithaca College holds a Rod Serling conference every 2nd year or so and
will be having another in September.

But more interesting for POTA fans are some of the contents of the
collected proceedings from prior years, which include a paper and
presentation discussing the Rod's involvement and contribution to the
original script. Some of the research attempts to answer the age old
question of exactly which writer came up with the famous Statue of
      Liberty scene.

You can download the proceedings (a 230 page, 7MB PDF) here:

The POTA discussing are in pages 34-50. Very interesting reading.

I'd love to attend one of these conferences one day.

I for one will not speculate on or get too excited about this movie until I have actually seen the thing. I just have the feeling that a lot of folks are getting way too carried away with it when all they have seen are the trailers, which let's be sensible here, are obviously going to try and make the movie look fantastic.
All the advance publicity shots and trailers etc. made me think the Burton thing was going to be great and we all know how that turned out.

I found it really hard to find out much about these two for the wiki site, Amanda Silver especially seems very publicity shy (even though she's the one with more writing experience and the more interesting background). I cropped and posted a picture only 80% sure it was actually her, and they've used it on this clip, so I hope it's right.

It's not even out yet and "Rise of the POTA" is already an award winner. Director Rupert Wyatt has been awarded a Proggy (as in "progress") both for the movie's message and the technology that avoided using real apes. The award was presented by the Rush Limbaugh Society, no it was by PETA. Only twice in the history of the Proggies has the recipient not gone on to win the Oscar (OK, I made that up).

be released film with no box office receipts to say whether it's a
"blockbuster" or not... Reviewers callling it that until the numbers are in really is

That term gets thrown around as marketing hype and really means nothing

Yes and No. People who write newspapers get paid. People who blog don't. And yet while an opinion is an opinion (of course) you'll also find that 2 kinds of people like to blog. Those who are just being honest and those who just like to hate. So who do you trust? The one who gets paid and does it for a living :)

Welles broke the news for the L.A. Times back in 1993 that Oliver Stone was going to do POTA, back in the pre-internet days. The kick off of the journey to bring POTA to modern screens. Now after almost 20 years they seem to have got it right. I still have that article.

It would be pretty neat if the Academy created a special Oscar category and awarded Andy Serkis. It would be the second time a special Oscar category was created because of the brilliance of a Planet of the Apes film. The latter being for John Chamber's makeup design in Planet of the Apes.

Some more interesting "Rise of the POTA" reviews. No spoilers beyond the usual setup.

Sasha Stone sez: "It was surprising how much (Caesar) stuck with me long after the film came to an end and even into the night". Since the site is called Awards Daily, what are the chances for a Best Picture Oscar nom? "Hopefully (the voters) can overcome their genre prejudice with something like this. The key will be to celebrate the director. It's not often that a movie comes out of nowhere like this - so the element of surprise is something they have in their favor".

Meanwhile, "Variety" was more dubious, calling "Rise", "A curious chance for humans to revel in their own destruction".

To tell the truth I was rather under whelmed by it. The CGI Apes do look fantastic and the Caesar performance is great but that was about it for me. The over use of 'nods' and names etc. from the original really started to piss me off after a while.
I do hope that they do a sequel though because all this movie really did for me was to set one up.
Wish I could be more enthusiastic about it but I'm not even in a hurry to go and see it again but maybe that's just me, hopefully everyone else will like it and will think that I must be an idiot or something!

Does the CG improve from the trailers and footage we've seen? Meaning, I admit some shots aren't perfect and they said they'd keep improving it until release. Were there any shots you recognized that you thought, "That looks better". ?
You didn't like the story? Most people seem to dig Caesar's journey.

Wow. Just...wow. Statements like this really make me not even want to watch the new movie. I won't be able to see it for awhile cause I'm traveling but...yeah.

The CG is fantastic and the story is good but nothing special. I personally didn't think much of the human characters and there were a few pretty crap moments for me but I really don't want to give anything away or put people off seeing it. These are just my opinions of what I saw and will no doubt differ hugely from others.
I wasn't over excited about this movie to start with anyway so maybe that has clouded my judgment but I don't think so. I just don't think it's that great but I have a sneaking suspicion that the sequel(s) could be.
And like I said earlier the numerous 'nods and winks' to the original really grated after the first couple.
Anyway don't take my word on it, go and see it for yourselves and make up your own minds. Mr. Whitty will probably get on here later tonight and give a completely different reaction, who knows?

So-so. Same # of stars as "Cowboys and Aliens" and only half a star better than "Green Lantern". Don't know if that's a "thumbs up" or not.
