I sat next to Neil.
I was far more impressed by the movie than
Neil was but I also had to leave before the end with a good 30 minutes to go. I’ll
be seeing it again tonight!
So with no spoilers I will say it does not
have much more to offer than the trailers, which is a shame. Apes look
great, actors do well except the dude playing JACOBS – I think he stinks
as an actor. There is a PARADE of references to the original movie/s and
while I would not have approached it this way, it did not bother me as much a
it bothered Neil. It was overdone though and I wish they had been more subtle.
I think Neil has a good point to –
that it is more an origin for sequels than a movie.
I’m happy it was made and I think it’s
a good movie with potential for great sequels!

To tell the truth I was rather under whelmed by it. The
CGI Apes do look fantastic and the Caesar performance is great but that was
about it for me. The over use of 'nods' and names etc. from the original really
started to piss me off after a while.
I do hope that they do a sequel though because all
this movie really did for me was to set one up.
Wish I could be more enthusiastic about it but I'm not
even in a hurry to go and see it again but maybe that's just me, hopefully
everyone else will like it and will think that I must be an idiot or something!

Just remembered another thing that didn't impress me either - the music wasn't much to write home about, some of it even sounded POTA 2001ish.

The soundtrack sounded like X Men and a
few other movies I have seen at the cinemas recently.
I agree it was not outstanding, but it
wasn’t BAD….
I just saw the ENTIRE movie and I like it
even more. The “nods” are really starting to piss me off though –
thanks Neil! I actually caught some I’d missed that were just WRONG!!!! “It’s
a madhouse!”. Oh boy that was when POTA2001 turned bad – when they
started the “nods”. I think that’s why they are really
annoying!
But still, I did really like it. The
other 100 people also laughed at the right times and walked out saying good
things.
No t-shirts tonight….there was one
at the morning session (Cornelius)!
Those fucking trailers did manage to spoil
nearly EVERY part of the movie!

The producer said they tried not to go overboard
on the references. Sounds like the only thing they didn't do is remake the
movie!
Especially awkward since the director said this
is supposed to lead directly to the original.

The soundtrack sounded
like X Men and a few other movies I have seen at the cinemas
recently.
I agree it was not
outstanding, but it wasnt BAD
.
I just saw the ENTIRE
movie and I like it even more. The nods are really starting to piss me
off though thanks Neil! I actually caught some Id missed that were just
WRONG!!!! Its a madhouse!. Oh boy that was when POTA2001 turned
bad when they started the nods. I think thats why they are really
annoying!
But still, I did really
like it. The other 100 people also laughed at the right times and walked
out saying good things.
No t-shirts
tonight

Those fucking trailers
did manage to spoil nearly EVERY part of the movie!

Just

Here's Fandango's interviews with the cast of

No, the director said it's a direct prequel to
the Heston film. I don't know if they're going to deal with the contradictions
of Heston leaving in 1972 (like the new "Star Trek" made it different timeline
with Nimoy's help) or if they're just going to ignore the details (what I call a
squintquel).

Well the Director’s got it wrong

There’s no way any sane person could

Yeah well after seeing it I don't believe him. Once again I don't want to reveal anything but it can't be a 'direct prequel' to the original as he's changed things
that relate to that movie.
He also said they wouldn't go overboard with references to the original didn't he? I've seen how that turned out!

Like I said this review is absolutely spot on. I did notice there are some fans on various other forums who had been waiting for that review as he is one of the few critics they will give
credence to. Since reading it though and finding out that he's not very impressed with it they are now saying that he's not all that after all and he's never liked POTA etc.! Makes me laugh.
Some people have convinced themselves that Rise is going to be the greatest thing ever and I think a few are in for a bit of a disappointment.

I stayed to the bitter end and there is no surprise at the end of the credits. There is a little epilog of sorts just after the start of the credits and then it goes back into the credits
proper.
I stayed in my seat when the credits started but everyone else in the cinema (all 7 or 8 or so people) got up and started walking out and all had to stop in the isles to watch the little extra bit. Just another thing
that is stupid about this movie.

.htmlI'll guess that this film might open in one of the Top 3 spots ("maybe" #
1) but only because there's nothing else major opening against it and the top
films right now are doing mediocre at best so RISE may slightly edge them
out... By next weekend it will drop out of the Top 5 or lower and will be in
a budget cinema by the first week of September...
DVD release will be in early November...

Yes, it's supposed to be Taylor in the "Icarus".
I'm sure all will be explained in "Rise", Pt. 4.
I heard Heston actually makes an appearance in

I think I'm the only one in my train of thought, BUT...I don't see any "Reboot", "Reimagining", or "Remake" as kick starting the series. The one
thing that they all do is keep POTA in everybody's mind. This is evident to me by going to the conventions in make up. People see you in full costume (whether it's Classic or Burton) and get a big smile on
their faces. They yell out lines from the originals. Most people have pleasant memories of Apes. Unless a direct remake is made or a miracle happens, there will never be a replacement or equal in our eyes and

ALL movies fall into that category nowadays. The days of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark are gone forever. Even 1989s Batman was on video while it was still in theaters. And that

They don’t name the crew.
They show footage of the ICARUS taking off
and say it’s the first manned ship to mars. Later a newspaper appears with a
heading “MARS MISSION LOST” or something similar.
So the director must think the ship was
named ICARUS in the original and that the crew was off to Mars.
Still, overall I really like the film and
I’m happy with it as a rebot.

In the script there's a voiceover saying Col.
Taylor is leaving in the Icarus for Mars.
The director said in "Sci-Fi" magazine (official
mag of the Sci-Fi Channel): "In this film, we see television footage of the
Icarus taking off from Earth, so that's a clear reference to the 1968 film...
this is primarily a prequel to the 1968 film".
Of course they could decide down the road not to
go through with it, or it could be not successful enough for a sequel. It
doesn't sound like they've painted themselves into a corner yet.

No, the director knows. Someone hear quoted the
director from "Empire" magazine where he said something like, "We had to decide
if we wanted to go through with that (connecting it to the original) since
Heston's original mission was in 1972". So it sounds to me like a "squintquel"
where they're leading up to the original but you have to squint to make it work,
like the recent "Superman Returns" movie took some stuff from the Christopher
Reeve movies and changed other stuff. Of course now they're rebooting "Superman"
AGAIN.

Re: Just back from seeing Rise. (SPOILERS!!!)
Actually we don't know that and this is one of the
main poblems with people reading things into a movie without knowing what's
intended and what isn't. No where does it mention
Taylor and the whole 'Icarus' thing is
probably just another in the long line of references to the original movie
(even though they should have known that the icarus name was made up years
later by a fan.)
Heston is on a TV screen in the background in one scene, in one of his old
movies, I think it was The Agony and The Ecstasy?

No, the director knows. Someone hear quoted the
director from "Empire" magazine where he said something like,
"We had to decide if we wanted to go through with that (connecting it to
the original) since Heston's original mission was in 1972". So it sounds
to me like a "squintquel" where they're leading up to the original
but you have to squint to make it work, like the recent "Superman
Returns" movie took some stuff from the Christopher Reeve movies and
changed other stuff. Of course now they're rebooting "Superman"
AGAIN.

They don’t name the crew.
They show footage of the ICARUS taking off and say
it’s the first manned ship to mars. Later a newspaper appears with
a heading “MARS MISSION LOST” or something similar.
So the director must think the ship was named ICARUS in the
original and that the crew was off to Mars.
Still, overall I really like the film and I’m happy
with it as a rebot.

there can be people with the same names, but if they have the same names (or

stupid... This movie is sounding less appealing with each thing I read...

Are you kidding? The reviews are through the roof
and it has a 90% "want to see" on Rotten Tomatoes (The Hobbit has a 93 % and
that's probably the most anticipated movie except maybe Batman 3). Everybody is
saying they didn't expect much from this but it's great so I think it's going to
do very well. The top 3 movies of all time, 2 of them have FX by WETA ("Avatar"
and "Lord of the Rings 3") so don't count it out yet. We'll know this
weekend.

about seeing it, but in a way I hope you're right about it spawning sequels
if for no other reason than to show ST and SW that they're not the only game
in town... That said, my gut feeling is that I really don't think this film
will have what it takes to reinvigorate the APES name...

It's weird but Oliver Stone came into my head. He
was going to do POTA 15 years ago. Neil said "Lost in Space" and the main
character in Stone's script was named Will Robinson (the character in "Rise" is
named Will). And Stone has Ben Hur on the TV in "Any Given Sunday" (which had a
cameo by Heston).

Came across this info as well. I think Rise will make around $65M this weekend. Burton's horror fest remake brought in $68M opening weekend and that thing was universally panned by
critics.
I also wonder if the predictions are on the low side so when the film brings in near double the amount it will make for glossier headlines in box office land. I certainly hope it does big numbers it deserves to I
thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am getting tired of reading reviews for Rise where critics consistently site the classic Apes franchise for being campy. I have adored these films since I was a kid. They are not campy.
Planet of the Apes is as awesome and twisted today as it was forty years ago. They refer to actors in monkey suits. It was ground breaking makeup then and it still packs a powerful punch today.
The studio cut costs on the ape appliances in the sequels but, still General Ursus, Cornelius the mutants. This is classic 70's science fiction, it is not camp.

I really didn't have a problem with the

I enjoyed the humans too, even the Jacobs dude.
Considering original Caesar had to deal with Breck and Kolp I didn't think he

I just get the "Apes" fans who are trashing this

"damn dirty ape" line but they didn't spotlight it like Burton did. The
"madhouse" line was very in the background. I even missed the Heston footage. My
friend saw it, I guess I was concentrating on Lithgow.
I enjoyed the humans too, even the Jacobs dude.
Considering original Caesar had to deal with Breck and Kolp I didn't think he
was over the top.
I just get the "Apes" fans who are trashing this
movie. It's awakening a lot of people to the power of the POTA
concept.

Yes that review is
perfect.
I still think its
worth seeing and as I said we all know precisely where the sequels will go but
they might give us a better villain (there were actually 2 in RISE Jacobs and
MUSTANG owner).
Compared to other stuff
around its a good movie but yes it could have been a whole lot better. I
just wanted something that wiped out the memory of
Burton s movie and it achieved that
goal.

No Mike it’s a much better film. I think
you too will LIKE it but you will be disappointed it wasn’t all it could have
been.
I’m not as disappointed as Neil – I think
Neil was expecting too much and the “tributes” effected him more than they
effected me.
I’m also the “kid” who got excited every
time he saw something with a POTA logo on it (right up to that
Burton film), not the “Defender of the

There was never a whole lot of integrity

My criticism comes with a “I liked it, but….”
and the more I think about it the more I think there’s a big thing missing
other than a villain (or two poor ones) – it’s that adult, depressed,
depressing, bleak message that teases us with hope that really defines POTA to
me. If it was made a bit more adult, a bit more bleak, a few rude words, a sex
scene (no, TZero, not humand and apes!). I really suspect there’s a much
better, much longer Director’s edition coming out and he’ll delete all those

sloppy film making that bug me and a few whopping plot holes as well.

Seriously Jeff, PLANET didn’t! The idea
of a sequel upset and offended people, to the extent Heston attempted to avoid
and MORE sequels by demanding the earth be destroyed.
So PLANET was not set up for sequels while
yes it did leave itself open.
Beneath did not in any way set itself up
for a sequel.
Escape did.
Conquest sure allowed for a sequel as did
BATTLE but RISE Is incomplete without them and has been orchestrated to spawn
sequels – that is its objective (which could be the thing annoying some fans).

The director said it is a direct
prequel.
But it can go anywhere it wants. I thought they
were going to intercut a launch with shots of Taylor and his crew but they just
showed anonymous astronauts so the "Icarus" doesn't even have to be Taylor's
ship. It could just be a nod to what usually happens to POTA astronauts. They
wind up missing.
Pull it apart all you want while it's still
fresh. I don't see why not as long as you title it "Spoiler".

Where was there ever a sex scene in the original
films? I thought "Rise" was very bleak, dark, dealt with death. I'd say it's
more "adult" than the originals, that's what's surprising people.

I think the trailers did a disservice to the
movie and will affect the opening weekend. So many of the reviews are saying
they didn't expect much because of the trailers and they were blown away. So it
may take awhile for people to come to the theater but they will
come.
The movie got applause when I saw it. That's the
first applause I've heard all summer and I've seen most of the big movies
(though not Harry Potter).

No sex scene, but Heston’s butt and “damn”

Where was there ever a sex scene in the original

say it's more "adult" than the originals, that's what's surprising

I’m not as disappointed as Neil – I think Neil

My criticism comes with a “I liked it,

a big thing missing other than a villain (or two poor ones) – it’s
that adult, depressed, depressing, bleak message that teases us with hope that
really defines POTA to me. If it was made a bit more adult, a bit more
bleak, a few rude words, a sex scene (no, TZero, not humand and apes!). I
really suspect there’s a much better, much longer Director’s
edition coming out and he’ll delete all those references and add some

I think the trailers did a disservice to the movie
and will affect the opening weekend. So many of the reviews are saying they
didn't expect much because of the trailers and they were blown away. So it may
take awhile for people to come to the theater but they will come.
The movie got applause when I saw it. That's the
first applause I've heard all summer and I've seen most of the big movies
(though not Harry Potter).

Jeff I do like it! I agree though it could have been better
and it isn’t terrific or fantastic. It’s chocolate ice
cream! The first time I tasted it, it was awesome! They promised me
a better chocolate ice cream but I knew it couldn’t be better so when it
wasn’t I was not too disappointed. I’m glad I tasted it, but
it could have been perfect with a choc ripple and white chocolate sprinkles
(though I’ll always go for the otiginal!).
Do you agree the trailers left NOTHING to our imagination?

Sorry you guys didn't like it. I had a blast. It wasn't perfect in either
FX or story but I loved it.
I
really didn't have a problem with the references, they seemed pretty subtle to
me. The only time I winced was the "damn dirty ape" line but they
didn't spotlight it like Burton
did. The "madhouse" line was very in the background. I even missed
the Heston footage. My friend saw it, I guess I was concentrating on Lithgow.
I
enjoyed the humans too, even the Jacobs dude. Considering original Caesar had
to deal with Breck and Kolp I didn't think he was over the top.
I
just get the "Apes" fans who are trashing this movie. It's awakening
a lot of people to the power of the POTA concept.

Yes that review is perfect.
I still think it’s worth seeing and as I said we all
know precisely where the sequels will go but they might give us a better
villain (there were actually 2 in RISE – Jacobs and MUSTANG owner).
Compared to other stuff around it’s a good movie but
yes it could have been a whole lot better. I just wanted something that
wiped out the memory of
Burton ’s movie
and it achieved that goal.

Seriously Jeff, PLANET
didnt! The idea of a sequel upset and offended people, to the extent
Heston attempted to avoid and MORE sequels by demanding the earth be
destroyed.
So PLANET was not set
up for sequels while yes it did leave itself open.
Beneath did not in any
way set itself up for a sequel.
Escape
did.
Conquest sure allowed
for a sequel as did BATTLE but RISE Is incomplete without them and has been
orchestrated to spawn sequels that is its objective (which could be the thing
annoying some fans).

Jeff – when Caesar bit that finger I
saw some hope.
BUT – it is not until after the
titles roll that SOME people see the finger tip is replaced and that’s
the only way we know he bit it OFF!!!! EVEN THAT WAS KIDDIFIED!!!!
If I saw apes charging over the bridge
like that I would have NO consideration for using nice words.
AND I age a lot more in 5 years and my
relationships that have lasted 5 years would have more than a “good luck”
kiss like that. The actors should have picked that up even if they are brain
dead! She should have grabbed his cock and said “look after this for me!”
or something INTIMATE! But that would have got an M rating right? Thankfully
I think there’s going to be a director’s cut where we see an M or
even R film and I’ll get over these comments! J

Yeah it leads to the apes being wiped out before they can do anything else. Wouldn't be too hard as the humans know where to find them and they can be conveniently penned in whilst they
are annihilated. Won't be much of a movie though so maybe we need come up with more gaping plot holes and silly storytelling to get them out of that one! Should be an interesting
sequel/'notherpreguel/squintalotquel or whatever. ;-)

the Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Yeah it leads to the apes being wiped out before they
can do anything else. Wouldn't be too hard as the humans know where to find
them and they can be conveniently penned in whilst they are annihilated. Won't
be much of a movie though so maybe we need come up with more gaping plot holes
and silly storytelling to get them out of that one! Should be an interesting
sequel/'notherpreguel/squintalotquel or whatever. ;-)
