to pull in new readers. They started this because writers say that there is too much continuity and it bogs them down. Then, you see them creating new things like say, " an alien race that the X-men in this
universe have known for years but you never saw them before. The back story is important that they were friends before this." Well, why not just use the SHi'ar? New readers will simply accept that the X-men
will have known these guys for a while, and fans will be happy to see something that THEY know the back story to. A diverse universe with a rich tapestry to draw upon is a great thing to start with.

characters of that book that completes and then introduces the next "level", hooking you for the next book.

| Subject: "Rise" writers ready for sequel |
.html
.html
As with director Rupert Wyatt, the writers of
"Rise of the POTA" are ready to go if/when Fox says so. "We feel very confident
that there will be (a sequel)", says Rick Jaffa, "but at this point it's still
wait-and-see"... there "haven't been any official conversations". He and Amanda
Silver have enough ideas for two more and have planted seeds in "Rise" of where
it would go. Usually filmmakers these days think in terms of trilogies. I say do
one for 2013 and one for 2018, the 50th anniversaries.
Thanks, Al!

This is kind of interesting considering one of
Chuck Heston's most famous movies dealt with the future of our "precious
planet".
The Earth "won't miss us". Doesn't say anything
about apes taking over, though.

Here's the actual audio of Ed Gross' sequel talk
with "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt. Interesting. He describes a scene that was
cut.

.htmlThis review (
http://theschleicherspin.com/2011/08/10/rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes/ ) raises a question:
"If the producers have any sense (and it seems like they do)Â…they'll offer Wyatt the world to continue behind the director's chair with what inevitably will be a new series. If Wyatt has any sense (and it
seems like he does)Â…he'll run as far away from the franchise as he can and ply his trade with original films he can continue upon which to put his signature spin."
It sounds like Wyatt wants to do more though, and Fox presumably won't want to spoil a successful formula. But these things don't always work out, just ask Scott Frank, and making a cash-in sequel is also a very
different process from taking a risk on a reboot. Serkis may be tied up for a few years in The Hobbit, and Silver/Jaffa, as far as I can see, had no writing credits for 13 years before this, which is quite a case of
writer's block. I'm also reading between the lines that Franco won't be invited back. And maybe Peter Jackson might want to step in to the office next door and take over...

Okay, here's a quick sketch I did of Caesar in the 'classic' chimp clothes. I reckon the new apes would look all right in the old
stuff.

This interview is interesting in that Andy

And I think Jess right as well. I'm going to have to revisit some of
those early production pieces to see how close they are. Perhaps the new
movie is drifting towards the original Serling concept of what POTA
should have looked like before Jacobs had to cut costs and ended up with
the more primitive society.

It actually works pretty well. Nice job! My concern, one of my concerns, was that Caesar masters speach too quickly. If we see a sequel with all the same apes talking after just a few
years, then you're back to 'Battle' and unrealistic (by POTA standards) jumps in evolution. Their speech, clothes, etc, should evolve to where Taylor finds them, otherwise they make huge advances in ten
years or so, then just don't change anything for 2000 years.
On a fairly unrelated topic, I was just thinking wouldn't it be cool if the next movie had the advanced apes looking down on primitive apes, using them as soldiers, labourers, etc, and not seeing the hypocrisy. A bit
like the way humans evolved into mutant and primitive species.

"The Help" didn't need any to totally crush POTA
on Thursday. OK, actually it was a barely perceptible win (both did $ 4.3
million and change). "Rise" made $ 77.4 million dumbestically it's first week
and Week 2 begins today. Not much competish this weekend so the apes should rule
(unless "Glee: the Concert" pulls it out). Next weekend will be Roddy vs. Roddy

It’s going to happen Neil! They
already have Caesar talking now so I guess that can be explained by his
exposure to the gas.
Something Neil and I were discussing last
night is – how many apes were in the compound? So how many must have
been at the ZOO and how did the ZOO apes get so intelligent so quickly? He was
out of the gas by then…..
Oh well.

I think only the apes who were exposed to the gas
are intelligent, the rest are just followers. Caesar is going to have get
himself a good supply of gas for the sequel. Maybe Franco can help out. I liked
the script version better, where the apes had to drink Caesar's blood.
Besides, how did the apes get so intelligent and
speak in "Conquest" and "Battle"? Trying to show the origin story is just a
slippery slope. : o

Are you still a member of this group or are you exclusive to the other one these days? It's just that you still have the banner for the Forbidden Zine on your site that HAS THE WRONG

I know James and his group did everything they could to avoid promoting the magazine when it came out and he obviously deliberately omitted the FZ when he redesigned your site but at least you used to support all Apes

I've heard reports of apes learning sign language

Maybe that's what they were thinking.

I think something was cut here in the final edit. There were three canisters in the fridge, IIRC, and Caesar used two of them at the primate center. I think maybe a scene was cut where he
used the third one at the zoo. Remember that just before Caesar and the other apes showed up at the zoo to free the 20 or so caged apes, the docent lady was urging the group of people to take photos because the zoo apes
didn't usually act the way they were acting. They may have been acting oddly because Caesar had given them a shot of the gas the night before, as he was returning to the primate center after taking the canisters
from Will's fridge.

Yes it will be interesting to find out why it was so badly cut in places. I wonder if a lot of it may have to do with the CGI not being up to scratch?

There's been some good CG in the trailers that
was cut, like Caesar cradling Cornelia. And there was some CG not up to scratch
that made it into the film, so I don't think that was the reason. I get the
feeling Fox was kind of nervous about this movie, keeping a low profile,
not really marketing it much. Since it's not a typical summer action movie
and has stuff that might be considered depressing to the "Transformers" crowd.
Maybe they wanted to streamline it and make it go down easier? It seems shorter
than it has to be.

I think I have found where another big part has been cut out. The morning after the apes use their newfound intelligence to escape from the facility by taking the most difficult route they
seem to have cut out the bit where Franco and Pinto climb up onto the roof and let themselves into the still locked facility. ;-)

Me too, but they are revered and studied
and have films made and books written about them.
They are not cast away.

I've heard reports of apes learning sign language
and then they get shoved aside to some cage and they still sign years later.
Maybe that's what they were thinking.

"Rise" kicked off the weekend with $ 8 million
and will probably win the 3 days, though "The Help" looks like it will breathe
down it's neck the whole time. Estimates have "risen" from $ 23 - 25 million to
$ 26 m. or more. It's doing better than Fox's other prequel "X-Men" did at this
point. I'm hoping word of mouth will carry farther in the long run but so far
"X-Men: First Class" looks to be the role model. Of course, neither had the
benefit of 3D prices that some of the other summer blockbusters
had.
On the foreign front, "Rise" made $ 43 million
through Thursday (8/11).

I think it will.
It hasn’t LOST any money and looks

It isn’t a complete turd like

yes I can see at least a sequel.

That wasn't exactly my question as given it's success it is clear that it will spawn sequels but the question was will it spawn spinoffs such as miniseries or TV series like it's predecessors.

Why not? The original movie did spawn a TV series. Why would there be no interest for a miniseries after the success of this movie? <.html

I think the CG would be too expensive to do as a
TV thing. If the sequels were popular enough maybe they would do an animated
something or other for TV. But there's no way really to say. Even sequels aren't
guaranteed yet.

Then you should really check out TV shows like Dark Skies that uses CG creatures extensively. And a miniseries would be quite doable. And a big screen sequel is almost guaranteed at this point.

Dark Skies is a TV Show from the 90s.
I think you mean FALLING SKIES.
There’s some aliens in it that are
CGI. But it sure as shit isn’t ALL CGI or even half, or even CLOSE! There’s
a bunch of humans in it and they carry 90 – 95% of the story line.
Whereas a POTA TV Show would have to use
an enormous amount of CGI for the apes so we have the age old problem of it
being too expensive (unless we go with cheap Galen make-up and not too many
apes – AGAIN!).
Plus the TV Show was a flop!

Unless they do an animated series, which is possible. Especially now that it's popular as they are going to need something to sell the toys that will come out. ;-)

"Rise" made an estimated $ 27 million domestic
this weekend, though it ain't over until it's over. That's more than the
expected $ 23 - 25 mil.

Well I still think that a miniseries like Children of Dune or Tin Man is still possible for this reboot of the franchise at least. And mind you I liked the Apes TV show despite how cheesy it was. And who
knows WETA could come up with a way to make their effects cheap enough for TV productions as well. <.html

Here's the imdb thread of logic gaps in "Rise"
for those who want to delve into them. Of course the originals have their share
too. The POTA concept is a hard one to finesse, especially the origin.

I don't see them doing anything for TV while the
movies are hot. Nor would I want to see something on TV that dilutes "Apes" any
further. If they can do a good series of features that's enough for
me.
