As I recall in the original POTA the apes had virtually no appreciation of arts and music, their cities and dwellings were extremely austere. But in this one as they take over our
civilization decimated by the plague it is a whole new ballgame not too mention that unlike their original counterparts the apes in this reboot are super smart as in smarter than humans. That said do you think they will
have a deeper appreciation for the arts and music? I hope they do. As it could also play a factor into their enslavement of humans. Some would be used for just that task. :D <.html

.html*** Is that why they have a museum (which more than likely holds more than
only stuffed specimens... Remember it has that weird "birdclaw" sculpture as
a centerpiece too...) They also have those wallhangings and statues & busts
of The Lawgiver among other odd pieces... I think more of them appreciate
"art" than is believed, but it's "their" art and subject to their standards
of beauty and quality... ***

That "museum" was quite austere to tell you the truth but my question remains anyway. Will this apes have a finer and deeper appreciation of arts than their original counterparts? I recall that in
the movie Caesar could draw pretty well and do 3D puzzles such as the one he was completing of the statue of liberty. And we never saw music from the Apes in the original either I hope in this one as they learn from our
civilization they adopt music as well. Again it could be used as a plot vehicle for another one more reason to enslave humans so they could sing or dance for the apes entertainment. <.html

.html*** I forgot to add that Barlow from the TV series has definite
appreciation for these type of things (I know he's not from the film but he's the same
type of ape)... And if you want to go even further into it, in the semi-TV
canonical POWER Records story "Battle of Two Worlds" the Prefect Landa is an
artist (painter)... ***

Watch the film again! It is made crystal clear that Caesar's cognitive abilities exceed that of a human being. <.html

.html*** Again, not from the original film but the TV series: In the episode
"The Horserace", there is that "troubador" ape wandering thru the village
strumming some sort of stringed instrument... And in "The Gladiators, rolling
drums can be heard (though it's not shown if it's ape or human playing them)...

Here's the imdb thread of logic gaps in
"Rise" for those who want to delve into them. Of course the originals
have their share too. The POTA concept is a hard one to finesse, especially the
origin.

I can accept the flaws of the originals as they were made in a totally different era under totally different circumstances. I bet none of the original sequels had the benefit of a couple of
years developing the story. They were rushed out quickly and cheaply unlike Rise. With the new film they had the time and the opportunity to make a film that should not have so many balls-ups in it.

Plus there's some sort of tapestry being made on a frame in Cornelius and Zira's house in Beneath as well as art hanging on the walls. I also recall there being plenty of wall
hangings, sculptures and arty stuff in one of the prefect's dwellings in the TV show as well as in other TV show dwellings.

Yes and I thought Avatar was a load of rubbish as well personally. Just because many films have plot holes it doesn't excuse Rise for having so many things wrong with it. Like I said in
an earlier post they had the time and resources to get it right but they failed on so many levels.

Caesar and all the apes were given the same exact gene therapy drug so there is no reason for the rest of the apes to be dumber than Caesar. The only difference is that Caesar is more experienced and

Yes and No Actually! He did inhale the 113 formula when he dosed the other apes at the sanctuary and probably at the zoo as well. (in the movie he picks up 3 canisters and yet only uses 2 at the Sanctuary.)
And Koba started writing down Jacobs name right out of the bat after being dosed so that again is proof that they are indeed super smart. <.html

The hint you get that Caesar did unleash a canister at the Zoo, was the comment the zookeeper made prior to the apes breaking free.
"Get your cameras ready, they're usually not this outgoing." or something to that effect.
I only wish they had showed Caesar at the zoo. Coz for some movie goers, unfortunately you have to draw them a map. lol

There is no evidence or even suggestion that he gassed the apes at the zoo. As to what happened to the 3rd canister who knows, just more sloppy writing or terrible cutting by the look of
it.

The apes that broke free from the zoo were ripping the fence apart to use them as speers.
That along with what the zookeeper said was enough to convince me of what Caesar did.

She says "Get your cameras ready, they're usually quite shy". And the apes getting uppity in the cage didn't seem to me to be because they had been made smarter by the drug
but because as most wild animals do they were responding to a bunch of rapidly approaching other animals. If they were already smart how come they hadn't made their own way out of the enclosure already?

How else do you explain the fact that they were behaving so oddly as for the zookeeper to mention it, not too mention the fact that they turned parts of their own cage fence into spears. I guess we will have
to wait for the Blue Ray release with the deleted scenes to see what we missed which I'm sure is a lot. I think that had this movie's footage being released in it's entirety it would have been a 4 hours long
feature.
But anyway we are moving away from the thread's OP. The question was would this super smart hybrid apes be able to appreciate art and music in a far deeper way than their original counterparts could and I think the
answer is YES. <.html

Well as long as it's not the writers and makers of Rise drawing the map. If it was there would be so many holes and bits missing you would never be able to use it. ;-)
There's no need to 'draw me a map' as I'm sure I've got as much imagination as the next person but that doesn't mean I should have to fill in their blanks and correct their glaring mistakes in my
own mind because they fail to do it properly in the movie.

Sorry but if you watch it again you will see that the apes that grab the fencing to use as spears are the ones jumping onto it from the outside. The still dumb zoo apes clamber over the
fence and exit stage right empty handed.

I wasn't talking about you, Neil. I didn't even know you have trouble with that scene to be honest.
But in any case, that's the impression I got from that whole zoo scene.
As for the apes not breaking out on their own, my guess is, when you go from dumb to smart you don't first think, how do we break free?
It's more like, what the hell is going on?
Luckaly for the apes that were with Caesar, they had direction. They had Casaer.

Sorry about that Roy but that tends to happen sometimes in this group as we are just a bunch of fans who like to chat away about Apes. There are other Yahoo! POTA groups that are much
stricter and don't allow members to stray off topic and shove their rules down your throat but we find that kind of restrictive for the most part.

And yes I know the Apes franchise has never centered on arts and music anyway that was not my question although Rupert Wiatt did say he intends for the apes to begin moving into our cities and discovering our culture
etc. That includes art and music, There is so much that can be explored in this reboot. <.html

Yeah, I ran into at least one already. It looks like you can't stop people from doing cell phone tapings, no matter how hard you try...personally, I'd like to see some kind of
technology to make it come out fuzzy or screw up the recording, but they'd just find a way around it. *sigh*

Here's the imdb thread of
logic gaps in "Rise" for those who want to delve into them. Of course the
originals have their share too. The POTA concept is a hard one to finesse,
especially the origin.

I say the good far outweighs whatever bad is
in the movie. It's a miracle this movie got made and the world at large is going
Ape right now.
Now they've got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy, so
let's see what turns up on the DVD as far as deleted scenes and
commentaries.

The only trouble I have with it (along with many other parts of the film)is
that many people, such as yourself Alex, have convinced themselves that
something has happened that we have no proof of. It's just sloppy from the

want to pull in new readers. They started this because writers say that there is too much continuity and it bogs them down. Then, you see them creating new things like say, " an alien race that the X-men in this
universe have known for years but you never saw them before. The back story is important that they were friends before this." Well, why not just use the SHi'ar? New readers will simply accept that the X-men
will have known these guys for a while, and fans will be happy to see something that THEY know the back story to. A diverse universe with a rich tapestry to draw upon is a great thing to start with.

So it can hold a bottle? WOW!
I surrender to his superior intellect!!!! Gee I bet he sucks the milk
down better too!!! That makes him SUPER intelligent and it makes this a
REALLY intelligent movie!
So other than being able to hold a bottle
himself how is it obvious throughout the movie that “the apes in this
reboot are super smart as in smarter than humans.”?
Is it that giant leap the gorilla takes?
Is it the lack of mercy where the chimp
(is he a Bobobo?) murders Jacobs?
Is it Maurice doing the sign language?
You have shown evidence that when Caesar
was very small he could hold his own bottle. He was clever enough to
steal a knife (no more clever than other humans) and escape (see “Escape
from Alcatraz ” for a more intelligent
escape!).
You are refusing to answer because there
is little evidence that the apes are smarter than humans. Maurice even
signs “Apes dumb” so what movie were you watching?
I think what you are TRYING to say (ie if
you were not being incredibly silly) is that CAESAR is intelligent. There’s
no evidence he’s smarter than humans, and there’s plenty of
evidence the other apes are dumb until they use the gas and then they become
smart – but not SMARTER.
So please continue to show evidence
instead of shielding yourself with your own ignorance.
By the way – did anyone else in the
group think the apes were SMARTER than humans and if so WHY?

Well it obviously doesn't because I can't think of anything he did that was superior to what a human could do that wasn't physical. Can you please give some examples where
Caesar's cognitive abilities EXCEED that of a human?

Well it obviously doesn't because I can't think of
anything he did that was superior to what a human could do that wasn't
physical. Can you please give some examples where Caesar's cognitive abilities

To be fair, that troubador, if I remember rightly, is just strumming the same note over and over, like either he doesn't know how to play it or that's as far as the apes
appreciation of music goes. Apart from the few example mentioned, the 'classic' apes are more interested in artifacts and archeology than art, the giant claw thing could have been a fossil dug up by Cornelius,
for example. And Barlow is fascinated by old human artifacts but then points to a painting of himself and says to Galen something along the lines of "isn't it remarkable? A human made it for me."

We're all counting on the DVD to restore the cut scenes - is that very likely for the first DVD release (genuine question)? What if they're sketching out a sequel and some cut scenes
(Cornelia's death, Franco's death) don't fit with the continuity they're planning?

For your original question, I think you'd have to look to Caesar's example. There was obviously a lot of piano playing in the house where he grew up(!), but he doesn't show any
obvious interest in music. On the other hand, Koba starts doodling shapes as soon as he becomes intelligent, and Caesar draws that window shape as some sort of personal symbol a few times in the movie, so he's
probably into art.
Actually, the penny just dropped - that 'Caesar: Rise of the Apes' red and black logo that was leaked about a year ago had that same symbol on it.

On a slightly related topic, I've been playing around with some of the apes novelty records, radio spots, etc, for a CD-length mp3 download. I know there was a plan to do this properly a
few years ago and some folks here were involved (Cougar?). I've been in touch with Chris, who was co-ordinating that, and he seems okay with me doing this, but I'll happily put it off/alter it if anyone wants me
to. <.html

What about that symbol?
You do know what that symbol was, right?
That symbol was the design of his bedroom window. That's why he drew it on the wall of his cell.
PLEASE TELL ME EVERYONE GOT THAT. PLEASE!!! LOL

For your original question, I think you'd have to look to Caesar's example. There was obviously a lot of piano playing in the house where he grew up(!), but he doesn't show any obvious interest in music.
On the other hand, Koba starts doodling shapes as soon as he becomes intelligent, and Caesar draws that window shape as some sort of personal symbol a few times in the movie, so he's probably into art.
Actually, the penny just dropped - that 'Caesar: Rise of the Apes' red and black logo that was leaked about a year ago had that same symbol on it. --- In

It's true he could pick up the bottle very young, but I think that, and wanting to play with the older kids next door, was more about him maturing much quicker than expected. I'm
told a chimp will reach adulthood by about 8, so if he was already intelligent AND maturing at the rate of a normal chimp, he would be remarkably smart - for his age. So at 7 or whatever age he is at the end, he's
super smart compared to a 7-year old human, but not smarter than Will, for example. Wise though, because of his experiences.

I think the reason for that is that the movie centered more on Caesar questioning who and what he was and his position in the world around him and not that he did not appreciate music. I hope that the
sequels explore this a whole lot more as well as Spinoffs such as a miniseries which I don't doubt could happen despite the skepticism on this board. <.html

But the most important evidence comes from the dialogue in which Will states that Caesar's cognitive abilities exceed those of a human counterpart it doesn't matter if the movie doesn't show him writing the

Ever heard of a homing pigeon? Or a dog
who can find its way home? I think these are more like plot holes anyway!
And yes his cognitive abilities at some
stages do exceed a same aged human I agree, however at no stage is he Stephen

And no, the film does not make it
absolutely crystal clear that Caesar's cognitive abilities exceed that of a
human. Only that some things do at some stages.

I think there was a scene with some street musicians in Burton's movie aswell. It was one of the better scenes, showing the diverse and colourful and chaotic ape city. But I think I
remember a bit in the original novel too, something about our human hero listening to an ape orchestra and finding it a very strange atonal kind of music with it's own unique rhythm - I like that idea, that they
have their own take on what constitutes music. (I might be thinking of one of the unused movie scripts, maybe someone could clear that up?)

Some might think they were smarter because they
were able to make a monkey out of the cops, etc. but I don't think they're even
AS smart as humans yet if for no other reason they are just starting out and
don't have thousands of years of smart experience. There is a line
that Caesar is smarter than the human counterpart (also in the trailer) but
I don't know who the human counterpart is (someone with
Alzheimer's?).

So it can hold a
bottle? WOW! I surrender to his superior intellect!!!! Gee I
bet he sucks the milk down better too!!! That makes him SUPER intelligent
and it makes this a REALLY intelligent movie!
So other than being
able to hold a bottle himself how is it obvious throughout the movie that the
apes in this reboot are super smart as in smarter than
humans.?
Is it that giant leap
the gorilla takes?
Is it the lack of mercy
where the chimp (is he a Bobobo?) murders Jacobs?
Is it Maurice doing the
sign language?
You have shown evidence
that when Caesar was very small he could hold his own bottle. He was
clever enough to steal a knife (no more clever than other humans) and escape
(see Escape from Alcatraz for a more intelligent
escape!).
You are refusing to
answer because there is little evidence that the apes are smarter than humans.
Maurice even signs Apes dumb so what movie were you
watching?
I think what you are
TRYING to say (ie if you were not being incredibly silly) is that CAESAR is
intelligent. Theres no evidence hes smarter than humans, and theres
plenty of evidence the other apes are dumb until they use the gas and then they
become smart but not SMARTER.
So please continue to
show evidence instead of shielding yourself with your own
ignorance.
By the way did anyone
else in the group think the apes were SMARTER than humans and if so
WHY?

They would probably still do it. Deleted scenes
sometimes have commentary from the director of why they were cut. Personally, if
it's a deleted scene I don't consider it part of the movie unless the director
puts it back in. So if there's a deleted scene that contradicts the sequel I
would take the sequel's word for it.

We're all counting on the DVD to restore the cut scenes - is that very likely
for the first DVD release (genuine question)? What if they're sketching out a
sequel and some cut scenes (Cornelia's death, Franco's death) don't fit with the
continuity they're planning?

Yeah the first few years, apes raised in homes
(like Nim) outpace the human child of the same age. Plus apes are stronger so
Caesar could pick up a bottle a human baby couldn't.

It's true he could pick up the bottle very young, but I think that, and
wanting to play with the older kids next door, was more about him maturing much
quicker than expected. I'm told a chimp will reach adulthood by about 8, so if
he was already intelligent AND maturing at the rate of a normal chimp, he would
be remarkably smart - for his age. So at 7 or whatever age he is at the end,
he's super smart compared to a 7-year old human, but not smarter than Will, for
example. Wise though, because of his experiences.

Did you even watch it? From the very onset it is shown that Caesar's cognitive
abilities exceed that of a human counterpart. when he was just days old he
picked up a milk bottle and drank from it, let's see a days old human baby do
that... Oh wait it can't. Will himself explains that this is so as well. I'm
surprised that you missed it if you even watched it that is. I have the tingling
sensation that you are trolling now. >

I guess apes do have photographic memories in a
way. They can remember a sequence of numbers better than we can:

He could
navigate the city from the Sanctuary to his house and even the zoo without the
need for either a map or GPS that alone shows he had a photographic memory that
allowed him to remember all landmarks along the way to each destination. And
mind you he never drove or walked to those destinations before. But the
most important evidence comes from the dialogue in which Will states that
Caesar's cognitive abilities exceed those of a human counterpart it doesn't
matter if the movie doesn't show him writing the next Shakespeare
piece. <.html <.html

Not if they limit themselves to a short season 12 or 13 episodes only per season like they did with Falling Skies and NO there would be no reason to go back to the 70's show. It would have to be linked

So am I the only one who saw Caesar not just as an ape or in his case a Super Smart hybrid ape but as a person? I sure hope not. Andy Serkis sure did a wonderful job bringing the character
to life and WETA did an excellent job in allowing Apes to emote like never before. I mean as much as I admire Roddy Mcdowell in his portrayal of ape characters he simply could not emote through that rigid mask as much

2.8 billion if your taking notes but I'd give apes $500 million.
But that of course all depends on how long Fox is willing to keep it in theaters.
I say, keep as long as you need to greenlight a sequel then give PapaBear his BLURAY! lol

As I recall Avatar was kept in the theaters for a very long time they ought to do that with this movie as well. <.html

No, they had to yank "Avatar" to make way for
Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D theaters. That's why "Alice" made $ 1
billion, because it was the recipient of the 3D fever "Avatar" spawned. That's
why they had a big rerelease of "Avatar", which is rare these days. They "left
money on the table", as Cameron said.

Very interesting, Jeff! I did not know that re: Avatar. And Alice in Wonderland by Burton sucks rotten eggs as much as the regurgitation.

It might be # 1 next weekend too. "Fright Night"?
"Conan"? Seem like niche market films. "Rise" didn't set the box office on fire
but I think it's one of those movies people will keep going to because of word
of mouth and repeats. People genuinely love it. And there's no more big movies
coming.

The Motion Picture Academy (the Oscar people) had
it's official screening of "Rise of the POTA" last Saturday for members (Oscar
voters) and reportedly it was 70% full (pretty good) and "well-received". So
another notch on the "Rise" Oscar nominee belt. The controversy over whether
Andy Serkis should get an acting nomination continues. I think it would be cool
if he were awarded a special Oscar for innovation as John Chambers was (many
people feel WETA is already a lock for the FX Oscar).

That's quick! Looks really nice too. My French is a bit rusty, is that bonus DVD "the genesis of the film" or "the original film"?
Also, I'm looking out for the book that came with the North American version of the Blu Ray collection a few years ago. The discs are no use to me as they wouldn't play on a European player even if I had one, but
is the book worth buying the whole set for, if thats the only way to get it?

It just says 'genesis of the film'. But that could mean the DVD could still contain a lot of info about the original since the genesis of RotPotA Is of course rooted in PotA. I was
curious about that myself.
