Say just like they have created glowing goldfish and now Glowing Goldfish just because they can by altering Embryos. How would it play out? Does the ape grows and escapes and then what? In
this scenario which is the most likely he would not be able to simply infect with "human intelligence" other members of his species. So if you were in this apes "Shoes" how would you go about it, to
try to bring Ape dominion over the Earth? <.html

I might be mistaken but isn't the bay window design...the one that Caeser draws in his cell and shows up on a stop sign during the revolution....very similar to the Ape Management logo in Conquest? Can't
find a pic of that.... Tim

The "Rise of the POTA" screenwriters take us
through the various references to the POTA mythology in the new movie. Some were
bothered by them, I enjoyed them and felt they were mostly subtle.

I was just in NYC for a week and was amazed that I saw zero billboards or posters! only the trailer playing occasionally on the Fox screen in Times Square....
I guess they were really relying on word of mouth.... Tim

Re: [PotaDG] Re: CLOTHES of
the Planet of the Apes
There's been some good CG in the trailers that
was cut, like Caesar cradling Cornelia. And there was some CG not up to scratch
that made it into the film, so I don't think that was the reason. I get the
feeling Fox was kind of nervous about this movie, keeping a low profile,
not really marketing it much. Since it's not a typical summer action movie
and has stuff that might be considered depressing to the "Transformers" crowd.
Maybe they wanted to streamline it and make it go down easier? It seems shorter
than it has to be.

Yes it will be interesting to find out why it was so badly cut in places. I
wonder if a lot of it may have to do with the CGI not being up to
scratch? Neil T. --- In PotaDG@yahoogroups.com, "Jeff K."

three canisters in the fridge, IIRC, and Caesar used two of them at the primate

Remember that just before Caesar and the other apes showed up at the zoo to free
the 20 or so caged apes, the docent lady was urging the group of people to take
photos because the zoo apes didn't usually act the way they were acting. They
may have been acting oddly because Caesar had given them a shot of the gas the
night before, as he was returning to the primate center after taking the
canisters from Will's fridge. > > - Clark > > --- In

My boxset has already been shipped so I will give you more details. Important to know is that in the boxset there is a 'voucher card' for the combo edition of RotPOTA which is due out in December.
The box DOES NOT contain the film but is a preorder boxset. Will pick up my copy of the film from Paris in December. <.html

Well what I'm trying to say is since science has already created Glowing goldfish and Glowing Beagles what if they come up with a trasngenic/hybrid ape that happens to be smarter. Let's say that he
glows in the dark as well like the Goldfish and the Beagles but more importantly they have created the first non human sentient lifeform as a result.
So what happens then? How does a one of a kind specimen like that goes about if it wanted to instill Ape dominion over the Earth? <.html

Well it would have to do it during the day as it would be an easy target in the dark for any humans who would be trying to stop it.

LOL True I have to specify that all those artificially created lifeforms (Fish and Beagles) only "glow" in ultraviolet light. And only after consuming a specific compound in their diet. :D
Still the choices would be very limited. He cannot just go and infect every member of his species with intelligence. He could I suppose mate with a female member of his kind and hope to reproduce but this would be a very
slow process. Apes do not procreate as fast as we humans do. <.html

Despite the acclaim "Rise of the POTA" has had,
Freida Pinto hasn't really shared in it since she's been considered
superfluous to the movie. Here's a movie that might show her acting chops.
"Trishna" has been described as an Indian version of "Tess of the d'Urbervilles"
and premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival.
And maybe there'll
be a meatier role for her in the "Apes" sequel.

J, I don't know if you're living in France, but this might be of interest. The French Space Agency (CNES) is holding an exhibition entitled "Les Compagnons de
l'espace" on the 17th and 18th September in Paris. It's about 'space companions', including real animals which went to space, like the female monkey Martine, and fictional animals, space robots,
etc. The organiser intends to include a bit about Hector the chimp-o-naut from Pierre Boulle's Planet of the Apes novel.

My copy just arrived on the doorstep about 15 minutes ago and I've just had a quick look through the book and it is beautiful! Very classy and I love how it looks just as good without
the dust-jacket too. The art looks fantastic all the way through it and some of the pictures have got me wanting to read it straight away to find out what's going on.
Depending on the story (which looks very promising at first glance) this could end up being the best POTA thing released this year IMO, including Rise!
Great stuff Drew (and crew), bring on the rest of the series!

It's another weekend already and things are
looking bad for "Rise of the POTA". After two weekends on top, here come three
semi-big movies to try to knock it off it's perch. "Rise" is kind of a
remake of "Conquest" and two of the 3 have histories with "Conquest" actors.
"Fright Night" is a remake of the movie that had perhaps Roddy's most famous
latter day role: horror host Peter Vincent. "Spy Kids 4" continues the franchise
that gave Ricardo Montalban a new generation of fans (also, director Robert
Rodriguez turned down POTA twice: in the '90's as well as "Rise" itself).
There's also a new "Conan the Barbarian"; the 1982 original had Ah-nuld as star
and Oliver Stone as credited writer (though none of his work was used) and the
duo almost reunited for POTA in the mid-90's.
Add to that the continued success of "The Help"
(which has been beating "Rise" all week) and the apes have their work cut out
for them staying on top this weekend. <.html <.html

Ah, okay, I've been misinformed. But (from a quick google) chimps only rarely eat meat (maybe only when biting off someone's pointing finger?), and gorillas and orangs are veggie,
unless you count insects. Like Caesar in 'Battle', the civilised apes might be horrified at the notion of meat eating and ban it.

Civilized like Koba? (10,000 pounds of sarcasm) Anyway as someone else correctly pointed out Chimpanzees are omnivorous and not herbivores. And I doubt they would ban meat eating as the chimps and bonobos
themselves would not approve of such a measure. And by the way stop trolling your extreme veganism on this thread. <.html

Ha! My 'enlightened humans' comment was a joke, I'm no extreme vegan. Each to their own. But it's funny, I maybe get too much of my info on apes from the POTA movies.
That's one example, where Caesar (in the novelisation of 'Battle') banned humans from eating meat and MacDonald and his friends furtively gorge on 'bootleg' rabbit in a darkened room. Another example
is the idea that apes are afriad of water, which is also not true - they can't swim but have no problem wading though water.
Anyway, as you say, chimps are omnivorous, here's what answers.com says:
"Most apes, while primarily feeding on vegetation, can also eat bugs and meat, i.e. omnivores by taxonomy. The greater question is are any apes (including homo sapiens) purely vegetarian? Gorillas are only known to
eat vegetation, orangutans add insects to that diet, and chimps even kill and eat smaller mammals. While apes could survive on a purely vegetarian diet, their anatomies could not sustain a purely carnal diet."
Gorillas: bloody hippies!

nice to have footage of the film at home!!! The DVD is all in English. Also included is a voucher card to get the combo edition of Rise (DVD+Blu-Ray+Digital copy) when it comes out (either in shop or online). Am wearing

Chimps do the hunting. If they took over they
would only be allowed to eat human meat (because the other animal species have
suffered enough under humans) and only on Friday.
The orangutans are vegetarians so when Dr. Zauis
took over he would abolish meat eating.

For the next sequel they will be enjoying our
abandoned stuff as the humans have moved underground, so it will have a Boulle
flavor (so I hope it comes out in 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the book).
Eventually they will become like the original movie since the director said it's
a direct prequel.

Through Thursday, "Rise of the POTA" made $ 117
million in the U.S. and $ 94 million through Wednesday elsewhere for a worldwide
total of $ 211 million. Still too soon to say if it's sequel territory but
hopefully the box office will continue to... I'm not going to say, no I have
to... rise!

I think Jeff got it right a few posts down about what would happen. That's probably why we didn't see meat in the first two films, only veggies, AFAIK.
And sometimes taste isn't the most important thing. Although I couldn't stay vegetarian when I tried it.
Mel, letting it go now

It looks like a very close race this weekend. On
Friday all the new movies seem to have taken a backseat to "Rise" and "The Help"
(which has been beating "Rise" all week by $ 1 million of so). Of course the
weekend is a different beast than a week day but so far it looks like "Rise"
still has a chance to pull off a third # 1 weekend. But I don't want to jinx it
so forget I said anything.

Law and Order! ;)
Nah – not much of a thread. As
most of you know there is unrest in the ape community where apes and humans are
supposed to co-exist.
If you have read it you will know a human
is torn apart and I thought it would be logical that this be reported and
investigated, seeing as it has not happened in the memory of any of the
characters.
There’s a nice twist to the
investigation and a statue of Kronos, mirroring the “lawgiver”
statues we know well, comes into play.
I seem to recall Neil illustrating the “Kronos
Lawgiver” – would you share Neil?
By the way, now that the FZine is almost sold out Neil and I are considering making
it available online. Comments?

.htmlYes.
I've got two of these for the last two movies. My understanding is that
back in the day, movie goers in Japan got these nice programs when they
went to see a movie. Not sure if they had to pay extra for these or if
they were just free incentives. But they are beautiful. I just wish I
could read Japanese to see what they had to say.
I might try putting that site through the google translator. :)

The party's over. Looks like "Rise of the POTA"
lost it's # 1 spot after a two weekend ride to "The Help" of all things.
But it held strong against the debuts of famous franchises ("Spy Kids",
"Conan the B", "Fright Night") to come in at # 2. It made an estimated $16
million to the un"Help"ful $20 million of the # 1 flick.
So how will "Rise" stand among the summer
releases? Too soon to tell but it would be groovy if it cleared $ 500 million
worldwide. That's asking a lot at this point. When the foreign numbers come in
tomorrow it'll probably be half -way there. Obviously it won't join the Billion
Dollar Club of "Harry Potter 8", "Transformers 3" or "Pirates 4"; or catch up to
"Kung Fu Panda 2" ($616 mil worldwide) and the slob duo of "Fast 5" ($605 mil
ww) and "Hangover 2" ($581 mil ww). But can it beat Fox's top 2011 movie "Rio"
($482 mil ww), it's once potential competish "Cars 2" ($476 mil ww) or the
top comic book movie "Thor" ($448 mil ww)? Time will tell.

Well I added $19.50 to that this morning. Three of us saw it and enjoyed it. First time was horrible. Second time palatable. CGI is not completely there yet, but being able to sit
back to enjoy the film instead of being 2nd row from front of screen made a difference.
I just have to say how wonderful Planet of the Apes fans are. When we got to the theater, a man was waving us down to hurry and get to theater #14, where the movie was about to play. I thought he was beckoning at
some people behind us but he was excited we were going to see the movie. My sister raised her eyebrows..."One of your "friends" I presume?" I told her, "No. I've never seen that man
before." How funny and wacky it was...and a pleasant surprise. And I wasn't even wearing an ape costume!

You're just jealous because you can't go to a
convention in CG. Talk about sour apes, I mean sour grapes. :

Even if you could look like a "Rise" ape, they'd
think you were something that...fell out of a tree!

Well I added $19.50 to that this morning. Three of us saw it and
enjoyed it. First time was horrible. Second time palatable.
CGI is not completely there yet, but being able to sit back to enjoy the film
instead of being 2nd row from front of screen made a difference.
I
just have to say how wonderful Planet of the Apes fans are. When we got to
the theater, a man was waving us down to hurry and get to theater #14, where the
movie was about to play. I thought he was beckoning at some people behind
us but he was excited we were going to see the movie. My sister raised her
eyebrows..."One of your "friends" I presume?" I told her, "No. I've
never seen that man before." How funny and wacky it was...and a pleasant
surprise. And I wasn't even wearing an ape costume!

So how will "Rise" stand among the summer
releases? Too soon to tell but it would be groovy if it cleared $ 500 million
worldwide. That's asking a lot at this point. When the foreign numbers come in
tomorrow it'll probably be half -way there. Obviously it won't join the
Billion Dollar Club of "Harry Potter 8", "Transformers 3" or "Pirates 4"; or
catch up to "Kung Fu Panda 2" ($616 mil worldwide) and the slob duo of "Fast
5" ($605 mil ww) and "Hangover 2" ($581 mil ww). But can it beat Fox's top
2011 movie "Rio" ($482 mil ww), it's once potential competish "Cars 2" ($476
mil ww) or the top comic book movie "Thor" ($448 mil ww)? Time will tell.

"Harry Potter" makes it look so easy but the
latest foreign receipts are in and "Rise of the POTA" passed the $ 250
million mark worldwide. The apes still don't get invited to the same
parties as the Transformers do but it's a start. <.html <.html

"Rise of the POTA" and "The Help" have been at
the top of the box office for a couple weeks. One is seen as a civil rights
drama and the other a summer action flick. But here's an
interesting commentary that suggests they have similar subject matter. I'll
let him tell you which one is better (and no, it wasn't written by Eric Greene).

here's one that says the original POTA was based in that era's civil rights

Eric Greene needs no introduction to POTA fans
who have kept up with recent thinking on the franchise. From the doc "Behind the
POTA" to the blu-ray docs to his commentary on the DVDs to his own book "POTA as
American Myth", when it comes to POTA, as Henry Ford said in "The Grapes of
Wrath", he'll be there. And personally I think Eric has added a lot to the
discussion, so sue me.
Anyway, here's his comments mostly on the
original POTA but he does mention "Rise" (which he doesn't feel is as risk
taking as the originals but it's a start).

How do you think the Ape civilization in this reboot will evolve? Will
they become a very advanced and technically capable civilization or will
they be primitive as they can be as was the case with the original
films?
I hope that this time around they become a very advanced and technically
capable civilization. Probably to the point that they chip all their
human slaves from birth in a very similar fashion as to how we chip pets
and other animals today.
What do you think?

The director said his idea was to pick up 8 years
later with the humans having to abandon the surface and the apes having all our
stuff. That would be kind of a Boulle thing, the apes in our modern buildings
and using our abandoned modern equipment. If they could release it in 2013 for
the 50th anniversary of the book, that would rock! Even Cougar would tell
the director, "Well done, sir!".

Again, that’s the scenario I was
going to use for BEGINS.
Modern society, modern toys, then a
breakaway group of apes blames technology for certain things/links it to humans
and goes AMISH, and ends up in North Eastern USA.
They can have their technology as long as
they have an out.
However there is way too much else that
does not fit in with PLANET for it to be a direct prequel, regardless of what
he says!

I think it'd reach a much wider audience; an online version would seem much more convenient to most of the internet generation. It would also probably be a good time to attract the newer
POTA fans, and generate interest in future issues. I say go for it!

Message
An update to let folks know that we believe the issue with messages
not posting to Groups has been resolved. The root cause was a misconfiguration
on one bank of servers that caused messages to fail to route properly. The
problem was fixed Monday at 10 am PDT (5 pm GMT) and our scripts and process
have been updated to prevent such a misconfiguration from happening again.
(Note: We waited to send this update until we were confident that this was the
only issue and the problem was fully resolved).
The problem affected
~10-15% of messages posted to Groups between Friday afternoon and Monday morning
PDT (and would have affected messages posted via the web or email). Messages
posted after Sunday at 10 am PDT (or approved by moderators after that time if
the message in question required moderation) should have posted to group but
would have been delayed until Monday morning. Messages posted (/approved) before
Sunday at 10 am should have been bounced back to the sender after 24 hours with
a message saying the mail server was unreachable or unresponsive.
But at
this point, whether or not you received a notification that your message failed
to deliver, if a message you sent this weekend has not yet posted to the group,
we would recommend that you resend the message.
Our apologies for any
hassles and inconvenience caused by this issue.

Early in the movie when Caesar is a baby it shows
the apes in the zoo responding to him, as if they knew on a deep level he was
important.
In "Conquest" and "Battle" the apes developed and
followed Caesar/learned to talk rapidly too. Maybe they should have made this a
12 film series and in # 12 the apes start talking. That's more realistic but it
would also be boring. They did what they had to do to get this thing cooking.
