I watched POTA 2001 again last night. I recall that one of the things a lot of fans hated about it were the lines from and nods to the original movie. Funny thing is it really doesn't
have that many and Rise has way more but for most fans it seems that it's okay this time! Weird.

I don't remember much from the Burton movie. I've been good at suppressing my memory about it. I don't even remember that it had any nods to the original movie.
I really hated the super obvious and very cheapening nods to the originals with Rise. It really gets on my last nerves.

It bothers me that the apes were able to replicate into the hundreds when clearly the sanctuary could not hold that many, and even if their numbers were beefed up by the zoo apes it still
doesn't explain the horde that comes charging downhill at one point of the movie. Plus the zoo apes were not exposed to the virus or if they were the virus had no time to smartify them...is there such a word as
absurd as that? Ridiculous.
Also, seeing so many full grown male orangutans crossing the bridge...there was that Maurice the circus ape...and the rest of the crew from the SF Zoo? Oh really??
And...one last thing before I go. Dealing with a supposedly aggressive strain of a live virus and wearing ONLY half masks? Whatever happened to full face protection and taping up? I guess half mask respirators
are a step up from dust masks, so I should just be quiet.

could maybe take the windows and the fall better than us, and they're pumped up on adrenaline. OK, stranger things have happened. None of them were deal breakers. I still think overall "Rise" had an
intelligent script.

theater, with characters behaving as a Greek chorus). But it DID bother me that the apes were able to repeatedly smash through glass windows and not suffer horrible cuts and broken legs after dropping down six or seven
stories. That stopped me a bit as the suspension of disbelief was gone for those things. A simply line about the Gen-Sys drugs making them semi-invulnerable would have been outrageous, but would have dealt with so
strange a super-power, especially considering Caesar's fall from the sanctuary tree clearly winded him after a much smaller drop.

have THAT private an existence for months. That moment caused me to giggle out loud in the theater. These are moments that can be solved with a well written line here and there explaining that they were aware that the
chimp had given birth but had sneaked out of her cage, and retrieved her child, THEN was protecting it later. Also the protective instincts of a mother should have made her defend the cage, not bolt away from it as
fast as possible.

high windows?

I watched POTA 2001 again last night. I recall that
one of the things a lot of fans hated about it were the lines from and nods to
the original movie. Funny thing is it really doesn't have that many and Rise
has way more but for most fans it seems that it's okay this time! Weird.

This stuff just plain didn't bother me, I was carried along by the good stuff. It's a busy lab and they overlooked the pregnancy? OK, stranger things have happened. Apes
are stronger than us so they could maybe take the windows and the fall better than us, and they're pumped up on adrenaline. OK, stranger things have happened. None of them were deal breakers. I still think overall
"Rise" had an intelligent script.
Sharks don't do some of the things "Jaws" did. There's no sound in space so half the sci-fi movies are invalid. The blood transfusion in the original POTA was
B.S. Welcome to the movies.

Oddly enough, I let a lot of the plot holes go by as necessary evils of scripting (such as "explaining" the hand gestures though they'd obviously know what they were...that was for the audience in the
theater, with characters behaving as a Greek chorus). But it DID bother me that the apes were able to repeatedly smash through glass windows and not suffer horrible cuts and broken legs after dropping down six or
seven stories. That stopped me a bit as the suspension of disbelief was gone for those things. A simply line about the Gen-Sys drugs making them semi-invulnerable would have been outrageous, but would have
dealt with so strange a super-power, especially considering Caesar's fall from the sanctuary tree clearly winded him after a much smaller drop.
And yeah, Bright Eyes was not only pregnant, but had given birth to a chimp that was clearly a few days old. That was an amazing lapse in scripting for a test
animal who was meant to be their showcase animal could have THAT private an existence for months. That moment caused me to giggle out loud in the theater. These are moments that can be solved with a well written
line here and there explaining that they were aware that the chimp had given birth but had sneaked out of her cage, and retrieved her child, THEN was protecting it later. Also the protective instincts of a mother
should have made her defend the cage, not bolt away from it as fast as possible. Again...I liked the movie, but thought the script was very thin and weak. Ty the Guy.

Oh, I agree, when you're enjoying a movie, you let things slide. And I DID enjoy the movie, and would recommend it to people (already have, actually). And I let a lot of things
slide..., BUT--
It's impossible not to stop and go "what?" when things happen that just pull my brain out of the narrative. To begin with, gorillas are stronger than we are precisely because they are much, much
heavier with denser muscle tissue. That gives them far more inertia when attracted by gravity, making them far more prone to injury from a long fall than a human would be, not less. It's why cats can sometimes
fall ten stories and survive, but humans cannot. Gorillas would go SPLAT from a two or three story fall, so a five or six story fall became so preposterous, I was unable to suspend belief. Didn't make me stop
watching the movie, but it made me say to myself "someone in Hollywood doesn't know basic grade-school physics here." And the missing pregnancy, sure, I'll buy that in a busy lab, but not in a lab
that has been busy constantly monitoring everything about this one, very specific ape. Recall that Bright Eyes is the one, very specific ape that they are bringing out to do a live demonstration on that day to
millionaire investors that is basically the one, specific reason this entire meeting is taking place. It's akin to to not noticing you've sprung an extra head on your way to work on Monday and having to
have a co-worker bring it up to you at a meeting on Thursday "Say, Nelson, you've sprung an extra head there...".
I'm not saying the movie wasn't great fun, only that there were three or four moments where I couldn't help myself and I laughed out loud at a preposterous plot hole. You're right, there were
moments in Jaws where the shark kept dogging the same boat, hours after each encounter, which was extremely unlikely in shark behavior, since they're as dumb as a fish. But there was never a moment where the shark
began operating a ham radio, or sprouting a second head or breaking down so many walls of disbelief that I had to go WTF?!?
I also thought it was a plot hole that the authorities left the apes alone once they got to the national park, as that's exactly when you firebomb the crap out of these killer beasts on the loose without harming
people, but THAT I let go, "Because it's a movie". That's about characters making unlikely choices, which is mostly the content of movies. But when screenwriters make things happen that involve the
hilariously impossible (not merely the extremely unlikely) my brain tends to sit up and notice. I can't help it.
Again, I still really liked the movie. But I'm a professional writer, and I get to call out my colleagues when they show laziness and lack of skill. Ty the Guy.

Yes Jeff, suspension of disbelief….to a
point.
When it’s SLOPPY, RIDICULOUS and VERY easy

Your comparison is lame and kinda

choices, which is mostly the content of movies. But when screenwriters make
things happen that involve the hilariously impossible (not merely the extremely
unlikely) my brain tends to sit up and notice. I can't help it.
Again, I still really liked the movie. But I'm a professional writer, and I get
to call out my colleagues when they show laziness and lack of
skill.

Oddly enough, I let a lot
of the plot holes go by as necessary evils of scripting (such as
"explaining" the hand gestures though they'd obviously know what they
were...that was for the audience in the theater, with characters behaving as a
Greek chorus). But it DID bother me that the apes were able to repeatedly
smash through glass windows and not suffer horrible cuts and broken legs after
dropping down six or seven stories. That stopped me a bit as the
suspension of disbelief was gone for those things. A simply line about
the Gen-Sys drugs making them semi-invulnerable would have been outrageous, but
would have dealt with so strange a super-power, especially considering Caesar's
fall from the sanctuary tree clearly winded him after a much smaller
drop.
And yeah, Bright Eyes was not only pregnant, but had given birth to a chimp
that was clearly a few days old. That was an amazing lapse in scripting
for a test animal who was meant to be their showcase animal could have THAT
private an existence for months. That moment caused me to giggle out loud
in the theater. These are moments that can be solved with a well written line
here and there explaining that they were aware that the chimp had given birth
but had sneaked out of her cage, and retrieved her child, THEN was protecting
it later. Also the protective instincts of a mother should have made her
defend the cage, not bolt away from it as fast as possible.
Again...I liked the movie, but thought the script was very thin and weak.

I'm not saying the movie wasn't great fun, only that
there were three or four moments where I couldn't help myself and I laughed out
loud at a preposterous plot hole. You're right, there were moments in
Jaws where the shark kept dogging the same boat, hours after each encounter,
which was extremely unlikely in shark behavior, since they're as dumb as a
fish. But there was never a moment where the shark began operating a ham radio,
or sprouting a second head or breaking down so many walls of disbelief that I
had to go WTF?!?

was one in particular that I was happy to see. Having a "Jacobs"
character named after Arthur P. Jacobs.
It's a nod that almost everyone in the audience would be totally
oblivious to, yet one that true POTA fans are intimately aware of. While
many players were responsible for bringing the original to fruition, he
above all, was the one that saw what could done from the humble novel,
and despite initial rejection from all the studios, persevered to get it
done.
I smirked every time I saw the trailer/commercial in which Caesar writes
"Jacobs" on the screen knowing deep down that so few people knew the
real significance of the name.

"Star Trek" and POTA started two years apart
(1966 and 1968 respectively) and made their impact in the late '60's before
being turned into Saturday morning cartoons and Mego toys in the '70's. Their
impact and staying power has continued over 4 decades and their position in
popular culture is as strong as ever thanks to recent prequel/reboots. Both
began with, perhaps, over the top leads (William Shatner, Charlton Heston) but
grew beyond those stories to encompass centuries. Maybe their approach couldn't
be more different - - one says the universe will learn to work together, the
other that we are doomed to eternal war - - but their end game is the same, not
to be documentaries of the future but to show us ourselves. I think the combo of
the two did as much to popularize science fiction in the modern era and that's
what I call teamwork. And both shared many of the same creatives, Mark Lenard,
Ricardo Montalban, John Chambers, Jerry Goldsmith, among them. So here's to
POTA's partner in crime.

to be # 5 this weekend despite the continuing revolving door of new movies.
Included is the middle film of the "Rise" trilogy. There's "Rise", "Contagion"

the new flick "The Warrior", "The Debt" and "Rise". We'll see.

This weekend "Rise of the POTA" will overtake
Fox's latest entry in the "X-Men" franchise, "First Class" (which incidentally
hit DVD this weekend). "Rise" and FC were comparable given they are both
prequel/reboots done by Fox and both had the level playing field of not being
released in 3D. "X-Men" has been a long term franchise for Fox. But if "Rise"
makes it to $ 500 million worldwide it will beat all the entries. Here's where
they sit, though not adjusted for inflation:
"X-Men 3" (2006): $459 million
worldwide
"X-Men 2" (2003): $407 million
worldwide
"Wolverine" (2009): $373 million
worldwide
"First Class" (2011): $352 million
worldwide
"Rise" (2011): $350 million worldwide
"X-Men 1"(2000): $296 million
worldwide
Just saying!

The latest domestic and foreign numbers are in.
"Rise of the POTA" was # 6 this weekend in the U.S. with $167 million domestic.
It passed the $ 200 million mark overseas for $206 million, with a grand
total of $374 million worldwide.

Bleeding Cool did some digging and found out
there will be two commentaries when "Rise" hits DVD, one from the director and
one from the writers (Fox's other prequel "X-Men: First Class" didn't have any
commentaries). Like Lucy, they've got some 'splaining to do. There's also that
"Apocalypse" enigma that they guess is an epilogue thingy, maybe a motion
comic (BOOM?). I reckon the official announcement will be
soon.

It's a curious situation that "Rise of the POTA"
has had a great run but has been dogged by two films for weeks now. On the
foreign front, "The Smurfs" has been # 1 and "Rise" # 2 for 5 weeks
straight.
"Smurfs" has racked up $321 million on foreign
shores while "Rise" is at $206 million. How dare they! If I saw a Smurf I would
step on it! I don't care if it made my shoe blue.
Meanwhile, back home on the domestic front, "Rise"
($167 million) has made the Smurfs ($136 million) black and blue (but
mostly blue) but of course has had to do si dough with "The Help"
($137 million) for weeks until recently. The $25 million budgeted "Help" might
even outdo "Rise" in the U.S. (overseas so far it's done $3 million in it's
limited release).
Of the 3, "Rise" is still king of the jungle in
the U.S. but the foreign take of the little guys has given "The Smurfs" a hefty
$457 million worldwide. "Rise" is at $374 million. Did I mention I hate
Smurfs?
In short, those two films have been the Smurf in
the ointment that have screwed with the late summer conquest of the
POTA. <.html <.html

Just thinking a little more about this - because of the way Taylor's ship accelerated through time, he sent his "final report" six months into his flight, but over 700 years
had passed on Earth. By my sketchy calculations, by the year 2019 (approx. time of the Rise of Caesar), just 12 days would have passed for Taylor's crew. Perhaps Earth had just received news of Taylor being
"Lost In Space"?
Just an idea, I'd rather this wasn't a reference to Taylor's ship, but it could be a way around if the writers insist on a tie-in.

If they're going to tie "Rise" into the original,
I'd rather that Taylor is from an alternate timeline (crossed over by Zira and
Cornelius in "Escape"). Physicists take that seriously. I think that's the only
way unless "Rise" is a "squintquel" to the original.

People seem surprised by how far "Rise of the
POTA" has traveled on the box office road but it's interesting who it meets on
the journey. "Rise" isn't even Freida Pinto's biggest hit yet. That would be
Fox's "Slumdog Millionaire", which made $377 million worldwide. To date, "Rise"
has made $374 million ww, so I guess it's about to reach another milestone.

I'd rather they didn't tie it into the original. As far as I am concerned it has nothing to do with the original series of 'classic' POTA movies other than the name Caesar
and the fact they tagged 'Planet of the Apes' onto the title. For me it is a possible reboot of the series that will use elements of the originals (probably by way of even more nauseating nods and winks) and
can't possibly tie in to the originals.

At least she had a character to bring to life in that movie unlike Rise where she only seemed to be there to show that Franco's character wasn't gay.

And now there's a new film about the legendary chimp researcher Jane Goodall
called "Jane's Journey", which hits veeery selected theaters this month. But
don't worry, you peasants will be able to see it when it hits DVD on Dec.
27.
And on Sept. 27th Jane will take part in a Q

can.
Jane recently began her 6th decade as the most
famous primatologist on the planet. She was doing what she does when POTA was
crapping in it's diapers. She's the Elvis of the ape world (maybe Barbara

Not the continuity but the look of the orangutan factory owner. They've suddenly changed from the classic look orang of the Lawgiver to a big cheeked Burton thing! A crazy thing to do!
For some reason they seem to think the 'Burton look' (apes, clothes, and buildings) is the 'classic' look.

.htmlThe sad thing is the version Hunter's site is not the best version of it.
There is a reworked version, with little changes here and there to artwork and the text slightly modified or changed in a few places. It was done to make it flow better and to fix up the confusion about what was
narration and what was being thought by Gideon (which was commented on by quite a few people at the time.)
Plus the fact that it was originally written as installments for the various different POTA websites meant that it had minor flow problems here and there that needed tweaking.
There were little changes I had wanted to make to some of the panels since back then as well. I have also re-lettered the whole thing, trying for a more 'comic book style' than we had originally. The lettering
was all done by Dave Ballard back then and even though he did an incredible job, we were all learning and making it up as we went along. Now that I am a bit more savvy with that sort of stuff I wanted to give it another
go.
I honestly believe that this comic book story, adapted from Dave's cool original short story, deserved to be the best it could be which is what I hope we have achieved with 'Beware The Beast Redux'

Boom!
The sad thing is the version Hunter's site is not the
best version of it.
There is a reworked version, with little changes here and there to artwork and
the text slightly modified or changed in a few places. It was done to make it
flow better and to fix up the confusion about what was narration and what was
being thought by Gideon (which was commented on by quite a few people at the
time.)
Plus the fact that it was originally written as installments for the various
different POTA websites meant that it had minor flow problems here and there
that needed tweaking.
There were little changes I had wanted to make to some of the panels since back
then as well. I have also re-lettered the whole thing, trying for a more 'comic
book style' than we had originally. The lettering was all done by Dave Ballard
back then and even though he did an incredible job, we were all learning and
making it up as we went along. Now that I am a bit more savvy with that sort of
stuff I wanted to give it another go.
I honestly believe that this comic book story, adapted from Dave's cool
original short story, deserved to be the best it could be which is what I hope
we have achieved with 'Beware The Beast Redux'

new, stunning blu-ray hits Sept. 27 and the film will screen at the New York

The latest foreign and domestic numbers are in.
While "Rise" dropped to # 9 in the U.S. (though it could go higher depending on
the actual numbers) it's foreign numbers put it at $391 million worldwide. Will
it conquer $ half a billion?

We never really bother too much about that sort of thing anyway do we? We don't have a big list of rules here telling us what we can and can't post. We've always tried to use a
bit of common sense and let folks basically censor themselves (though we will step in if it ever gets too offensive or whatever.)

Yeah I mean if it’s about Star Wars,
for example, and the thread overtakes POTA discussion then it could b a problem
but really even SW is relevant in many POTA discussions and therefore not OT,
IMHO.

We never really bother too much about that sort of
thing anyway do we? We don't have a big list of rules here telling us what we
can and can't post. We've always tried to use a bit of common sense and let
folks basically censor themselves (though we will step in if it ever gets too
offensive or whatever.)

Anything that isn't directly POTA is off topic.
It's because of, well, you know, that other group. They're very sensitive to
reading anything that isn't 100% pure POTA. And even then they censored my
"Ben-Hur" post. I guess because Heston wasn't playing Taylor in "Ben-Hur". Life

Jeff,
It’s the ACTUAL reason that

It’s never because people are
breaking rules, it’s because James dislikes someone or is threatened by
them.

It's been announced that Disney has acquired the
rights to exploit "Avatar" at it's theme parks. "Avatar" shares in common with
"Rise of the POTA" two biggies: Fox and WETA. Fox has also Disneyfied another
franchise, "Star Wars". Maybe this has something to do with Fox fulfilling the
wishes of two muscular directors (James Cameron and George Lucas) but if the
POTA franchise expands with successful sequels in the coming years, is it
possible Fox would want to loan out the damn dirty apes for fun and profit? And
what would be a good POTA ride/attraction?

My point is that you seem to allow people
to treat you like shit and not only get away with it, but get your support. It’s
not my place to judge you for that so whatever, I get really angry about it
sometimes.
There was no need to go to that extreme to
make the point and I do apologize.
Human nature?
That seems like the excuse of the day….

Well then you're saying that about half the
people in this group who are members of both (at least the ones who post). I
report news or whatever to both groups because I have friends in each. I wasn't
part of this war thing and I've never picked sides. There's a lot of people who

Not true, Jeff. I need to interact with other ape-minded individuals, as my family doesn't understand my obsession. So even if you guys fling poo at each other I don't mind as

Well then you're saying
that about half the people in this group who are members of both (at least the
ones who post). I report news or whatever to both groups because I have friends
in each. I wasn't part of this war thing and I've never picked sides. There's a
lot of people who have. I'm just here and there to talk "Apes". James'

As for the "high society"

Here's a comparison boxofficemojo compiled about
"Rise" and "similar" films ("X-Men: 1st Class", "G.I. Joe", "Incredible Hulk",
"I, Robot" and POTA2001). Mostly it shows how Fox keeps underestimating POTA,
since the POTA budgets are much smaller than the other ones yet the POTAs are
the overachievers. Maybe now Fox will wake up and spend a little
more.

I don't think Fox should always get singled out...I bet there really aren't any groups that report the news complete and the way it really happened. They probably all skew things one
way or another.

For Virgil fans, here's a podcast that contains an
interview with Paul Williams and the director of the new doc "Paul Williams:
Still Alive". He sounds real good and maybe this documentary will mark his
return but I think he's trying to keep his life low key.
They also mention this "Tonight Show" clip of Paul
in ape makeup is in the film.

Finally managed to upload the revamped version of Beware The Beast to the files section (Comics folder.) They are low-rez versions of the pages so as to save space but we are still up to 99%
of capacity so I will probably only be leaving them up for a limited time.
