I know but had a good reason!....for the last two weeks have been designing
and painting two rooms in an "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" house (one of the
last few as it is cancelled!) which took every bit of my energy and time!
I did manage to buy "Rise" and watch delted scenes and now that I'm done look
forward to all the other extras and commentaries...!

OK so I have now read the
first two new comics in the BETRAYAL series.
I like them.
I do have to say I am
wondering if someone got a few ideas from some fan-produced comics…anyone
else know what I’m talking about?

When Burton's came out, things were different. I
think there weren't two groups then. Everybody just spoke up about everything.
Those were the salad days. Now nobody speaks up much. I don't think it has
anything to do with the movies. Maybe these groups are just old hat
now.

It sure is difficult to get anyone to

For example, am I to assume nobody has

came out, things were different. I think there weren't two groups then.
Everybody just spoke up about everything. Those were the salad days. Now nobody
speaks up much. I don't think it has anything to do with the movies. Maybe
these groups are just old hat now.

Some of it due to What Jeff said about "classic POTA" fans being older.
I don't think the internet has taken a bang out of fans at all. But its a very different internet today. Discussion groups back then had a lot more participation because they were one of the few
"social" internet venues available. Today you have Facebook and a whole lot more social websites competing. Even the very number of websites has skyrocketed since then. A lot more movie review and discussion
sites. Just look at how many links people have been posting here. If someone new to POTA wanted to discuss Rise or even the old movies, they certainly would not think of checking to see if there is a Yahoo group. Hell,
most people don't even realize that Yahoo is still around at all.
In a sense, we are dinosaurs for sticking with Yahoo ourselves. I seriously believe that Yahoo could pull the plug at any time and if we were smart and really wanted to keep this or any other Yahoo DG intact, we
should be considering alternatives while we still have this place to keep in touch.
Unfortunately, sites like Facebook, which do have some advantages, also come along with many restrictions and other not so good factors.
But I digress from your point.
I am reading both the ongoing series and Betrayal, and while I am enjoying both, I have not had the time nor inclination to discuss. Perhaps when Betrayal ends it would present a better opportunity. I've been so
busy with other things that I have not had the chance to even start Conspiracy. But that will definitely be my Holiday season reading material!

"Rise of the POTA" was the surprise science
fiction flick of the year. You liked it, she liked it, they liked it and your
Uncle Charley liked it. Will Fox be able to do it again in 2012? Well, they just
released the first trailer for "Prometheus", which began as a prequel to "Alien"
but became just "Alien"ish. It's Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi 30 years after
"Alien" and "Blade Runner", considered two all-time classics. It used to be, you
look up "science fiction" in the dictionary and the definition was "Fox". They
were to sci-fi what Universal was to monster movies. Can they be that
again?

The stats on the wiki site were interesting too (that function has since been removed unfortunately), as the most hit pages were 'Rise', 'Caesar', and then POTA2001 and characters like Thade and Marky
Mark. There was a real sense among new fans that this was something to do with Burton's movie. And the site got suddenly very popular in July and August, but its back to tumbleweeds again now!

Yes! I saw this yesterday just as I was heading over to my comic shop to pick up the latest main series comic. I then proceeded to preorder more comics from the main series, the next 2

.html
Ed Gross recently talked sequel to "Rise of the
POTA" director Rupert Wyatt, who mentioned how excited he was that Jackie Earle
(Kraik) Hailey is returning to the POTA. OK, he didn't say that but it's
probably what he's thinking.
In any case, he says the sequel will probably
focus on the strengths that "Rise" had: "I would say that we will look to hold
onto the realism and the way we will do that is the film will still be set in a
world that is very understandable and appreciable to a modern, contemporary
audience. I don't think any of us want to be setting the sequel in any
dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. We have to play to the mythology of POTA,
which is Mankind brought about his own downfall. And I would say the next film
will actually focus closer to that than this last film did. As in, we are the
orchestrators of our own demise. And we are the architects in many ways.
"I don't think we're necessarily going to tell a
story that's saying humanity actually got it's act together and sorted
themselves out because obviously we're playing into a mythology that's already
preordained. But that said, I don't think we want to be setting a tone that is
in any way dystopian or bleak in it's aspects because I think one of the things
of ("Rise") that was so appealing to so many people was that it was a world that
felt so contemporary and therefore let people in. It wasn't clean, straight
sci-fi. It was actually a human drama that had science-fiction aspects, and
those were to do with the apes. So we'll probably repeat that in many ways.
We'll look to kind of work off of that and build from it. And we will be
obviously in the future but the conflict between humans and apes will be played
out in quite a plausible, logical world".

'Tis the season for year - end "Best" lists and
Sasha Stone of Awards Daily chose "Rise of the POTA" as her # 3 movie of the
year (along with it's soul brother "Project Nim"). She says: "Watching (the
apes) in their cages finding the spirit to break out of their prison and find
freedom was one of the most rapturous cinematic moments of the year". She also
placed "Rise" in some of her other lists.
But she can't say the same for it's Oscar chances
(nomination ballots are being mailed today so the next few weeks are put up or
shut up for nominations).
"Rise" is the front runner to win for Best FX but
probably any other nomination at this point will be a miracle. It'll have to
pull off a "District 9". But good luck to Andy Serkis and all the
rest. <.html <.html

Mr. M. Mark says he hasn't seen "Rise" but has
heard it was good, and that "ours wasn't". "Ours" meaning POTA2001, of which he
starred. He says the script wasn't good and, as for director Tim Burton, "They
were pushing him and pushing him in the wrong direction. You have got to let Tim
do his thing". But he adds, "I have (had) no better time on any movie than I had
working with Tim".

James Franco reportedly spoke up about Andy
"Caesar" Serkis and the Oscar controversy, saying Serkis should be recognized
because "this is the moment when he's really broken through (with motion
capture)...What he does is real acting".
Meanwhile, Franco's movie "Sal" premiered at a
couple of film festivals in the last few months. Franco directed this movie
about our own Sal "Milo" Mineo but it turns out it's a mini-budget/shot in 8
days affair. It's basically a showcase for the actor who plays Mineo, Val
Lauren. It's set during the tragic last day of Sal's life and reportedly is done
mostly in close-up. The comments I've seen suggest it's a slow paced art film
(perhaps reminiscent of Gus Van Sant's work, who Franco admires) but Val Lauren
does a good job as Sal. So Sal fans might want to look for it (but it doesn't
sound like the kind of film that will get shown much).
Here's the "Hollywood Reporter"
review:
And here's Franco and Lauren discussing the
film:

"Rise of the POTA" finished in the Top
10 domestically for the year. Let's run the numbers. So why does Hollywood
make sequels again?
1. Harry Potter 8
2. Transformers 3
3. Twilight 4
4. Hangover 2
5. Pirates 4
6. Fast 5
7. Cars 2
8. Thor
9. Rise
10. Capt. America
It got bumped out of the Worldwide Top 10 and who
knows where late releases like "Mission: Impossible" and "Sherlock Holmes" will
end up? But for now, "rise" a glass to a successful new launch for POTA this
year. Apey New Year!

Well, 2012 has begun and according to the
internet it looks like the "Lord of the Rings" prequel "The Hobbit" might be the
most anticipated movie of the year. It's scheduled to hit Dec. 14, a week before
the end of the world. But if the world survives "The Hobbit" will probably be
the big movie news as this year ends.
This got me thinking about the curious kinship
between "Rings" and POTA. First of all, the "Rings" books took off and became a
cult thing for the counterculture in the '60's (ask Leonard Nimoy), the same era
when POTA also had some things to say (ask Eric Greene). At the time attempts
were made to turn the books into a movie (even the Beatles wanted to do it). But
a "Rings" movie didn't get off the ground until the late '70's with Ralph
Bakshi's animated version. That had music by Leonard Rosenman, which some liken
to his work on "Beneath".
In the mid-'90's Oliver Stone was going to
produce a new POTA and the resulting script by Terry Hayes was full of "Rings"
references (as well as the main character being a gifted scientist named Will,
which found it's way into "Rise"). Meanwhile, with Roddy's blessing, Peter
Jackson spent most of the '90's trying to get a POTA movie made. As we know, he
wound up doing the "Lord of the Rings" films instead, which became a proving
ground for the folks who would end up doing "Rise of the POTA". Andy Serkis,
cinematographer Andrew Lesnie and WETA all gathered together for the first time
on "Rings", and "Rise" wouldn't have been the same without them. Even James
Franco credits his involvement with "Rise" to really digging "Rings".
Coincidence or fate?

We all know that Jackie Earle "Kraik" Haley
should be in "Rise 2". Does anyone object? I didn't think so.
The question is, who should he play? I was
thinking one of the human survivors but, wait a minute, hold the phone... what
about that ship full of astronauts? What was it, the Icarus? We all know damn
well that Taylor didn't go to friggin' Mars so that's out. The only way to do
this is those astronauts return and find humanity devastated by the virus.
They're like, "What the?". And Kraik, I mean Mr. Haley, is one of the astronauts
and he comes upon one of the human survivors, a cameo by Ron Harper. And he's
like, "I need a pouch to carry my things in, my half eaten chocolate chip cookie
and so forth". But Ron can't help him because he's barely surviving. So Haley
fights the apes when he's not making wild, passionate love to Freida Pinto.
There's your sequel right there. Write your
congressman. Tell Newt Gingrich you'll vote for him if he makes this happen.
It's a Kraik world and POTA's just living in it.

be a 'changed future' in which he exists. The principle of two timelines would mean that Zira & Cornelius' back-story/origin/history was different, was not caused by the actions of Hasslein, nor -
paradoxically - by their own appearance in the past. They could therefore not know about the Escape/Conquest/Battle sequence of events because in their timeline these events never happened (or happened very
differently). For that reason, no amount of Sacred/Secret Scrolls could have recorded the death of the son of a chimp called Caesar at the hands of a gorilla called Aldo, because that didn't happen until history was
altered. I would even suggest that the 2670 Lawgiver was intended to be either the same Lawgiver we see statues of in 'Planet', but with a radically changed attitude due to altered history, or an alternative
kindly Lawgiver who supplanted the original Lawgiver's role in history, again because of an altered timeline.
> And that's why I think the ending of Battle is open to interpretation, because if - IF - you were to follow the logic of a second timeline (as hinted at by Virgil) then the ending would imply a very
different future for the Earth. Admittedly, the scenes with Alma and Mendez contradict that somewhat, but again, bear in mind that these scenes were cut from the original film for a reason.
====================================================
A couple of things...
First, there are at least two reasons to conclude that the Lawgiver we see in BATTLE
(played by John Huston) isn't and cannot be the same 'original' Lawgiver-changed-by-an-altered-timeline.
Reason #1: Whether you date PLANET and
BENEATH to 3978 or 3955, it is established that the Lawgiver who wrote the Sacred Scrolls wrote them "twelve hundred years ago"
-- i.e. he wrote them circa 2755 to 2778... which is a good 85-to-108 years after
the date "A.D. 2670", when an already aged Lawgiver is telling his audience of child Humans, Chimpanzees, and Orangutans the story of Caesar. The prologue/epilogue scenes of BATTLE
take place just three years of Earth-Time before the first Earth-Time date we see in PLANET: "3-23-2673" -- which is why Dehn referred to the APES
films as having a "circular" timeline: it had come full circle. The 'Lawgiver' who wrote the Sacred Scrolls did so well after the death of the old
orangutan portrayed by Huston.
Reason #2
: We know that the sculptor who sculpted the statue of Caesar was able to make it look like the ape it was meant to portray. Picture the ape we see in CONQUEST and BATTLE
... add several decades of age to him, since the statue portrays him as older and as having written the scroll that autobiographically told "his story" (which he bequeathed to posterity, to the society of
tolerant Apes and Humans he had ruled)... and, in my opinion, the sculptor did a fair job making his work of art resemble his subject closely. Caesar's statue looks like Caesar.
Now, compare the 'look' of the John Huston orangutan -- especially his hairstyle -- with the famous statue of the Lawgiver from PLANET and BENEATH
. Compare, also, the set of glyphs on the Huston-Lawgiver's duds with those carved onto the Lawgiver statue. The hairstyles and the glyphs, respectively, are obviously different
. I would argue that if the ape artist who sculpted Caesar's statue could do so well enough to portray him recognizably... then an equal-to-the-task ape sculptor would've done a similarly competent job
portraying "the greatest ape of all"... but he/she doesn't, didn't, or will not (pick a tense!). The Lawgiver statue does not look like the Lawgiver from BATTLE.
The other thing...
Assume, for a moment, that the appearance of the Ape-onauts did
change things, leading to the world being saved by the 'advent' of Caesar. Assume further -- as so many POTA fans seem to want to -- that Cornelius and Zira were
completely honest when they were being interrogated by Hasslein and the two goons from the CIA. Let's assume these two things. Where does it take us?
Cornelius tells them that the first known talking ape -- the one who was the first to refuse to serve a human master in a vocal way, rather than merely grunting his refusal -- was named ALDO
. Cornelius tells hostile human interrogators the actual name of the great simian revolutionary who began the Ape Revolt.
In the TERMINATOR
franchise, the genocidal machines were able to target the leader of the human resistance with a time-traveling assassin because they knew his name: John Connor
. By sending a cyborg back in time, to kill the mother -- whose name was also known (Sarah Connor
) -- they had a chance to change history (or, so they thought) and prevent a human victory against their attempted genocide. All they had to do was get Arnold to look through the phonebook and then go on a killing
spree, murdering every woman named 'Sarah Connor' in the hopes that one of them would be the Sarah Connor who gave birth to their foe, John Connor.
If Cornelius truly believed that the first talking ape was named Aldo... then why would he endanger
him by exposing his name to hostile humans? What's to prevent Hasslein (or, some successor of his, later on) from reasoning that any
ape that is known by the name 'Aldo' in the future constitutes a potential threat to Mankind? Whether 'Aldo' shows up five centuries
later (in the implied future timeline given during this interrogation), or fairly soon (say, a few decades in the future, once Ape slavery has begun)... any
ape that just happens to have been named 'Aldo' will be a candidate for assassination by fearful humans who don't want the riled up Apes to have a talking leader to rally around.
I think it makes more sense to think of Cornelius providing Hasslein with the name 'Aldo' for a more sensible reason: to prevent (if he can) the murder of his own grandson by the simian 'Cain' whom
he knows had been named Aldo. Knowing that the real talking ape who led the Apes to a victory against their Human oppressors was actually named 'Caesar', Cornelius would not
have jeopardized his life by telling Hasslein his name. Why risk having hostile humans target any
ape named 'Caesar' (which would put his own son in danger), when he has the opportunity (perhaps) to get Hasslein and his ilk to target any ape named 'Aldo'... and perhaps prevent the death of
Caesar's heir?
Remember, there was more than one 'Aldo'... the gorilla who killed Caesar's heir (in BATTLE
), and an earlier ape, the chimpanzee who just happened to work for Governor Breck as a messenger ape, the one whose shellacking led to Caesar yelling "Lousy human bastards!"
in the Civic Center area. I don't think it's a coincidence that Breck owns -- and keeps an eye on -- an ape named 'Aldo' well before Armando brings Caesar into this city. It makes sense that Breck,
of all people, would go out of his way to be in possession of any ape bearing the name 'Aldo'... since it's the one name that Cornelius gave to his interrogators regarding the future downfall of Man, led by
a talking ape.
Breck's not on the lookout for an ape named 'Caesar' because Cornelius wasn't stupid enough to provide that
name to his interrogators, thereby endangering him.
Why is it that some POTA fans just want want want
the 5-film saga to have a happy ending? Caesar saved the world! Yay! Let's all sing 'Kumbaya' and forget all about the billions of people incinerated in the global thermonuclear war that ended human
civilization.
The first 4 films all have shocking, unsettling, upsetting endings. Caesar wants the world to go on forever... not to end the way his own parents witnessed it. He does what he can to try to prevent that. He wants
the world to endure well beyond the year "3950" (when he believes the world of his parents was destroyed).
But there's a bullet with the world's name on it: the Doomsday Bomb. It's out there, awaiting the moment when one person -- and it only takes one -- is in the right place at the right time, and with the
right frame-of-mind, to detonate it. That bomb exists because a group of religious nuts, who have come to believe that it is the instrument of God (even God itself), will spend almost two thousand years preserving it...
keeping it operational.
There's no evidence that Caesar even knew that Kolp's people were in possession of the very Doomsday Bomb which would explode within sight of his orbiting parents. Sure... if Caesar can find some way to end
the trend of history -- of racial conflict, religious conflict, political conflict -- then maybe, just maybe, he can hope to have saved the world.
... and, right on cue, a chimp boy yanks on a human girl's hair... and she turns around and pushes him down... Ah, a conflict. Surely, just playful hijinks between two whippersnappers. Right?
Why does that chimp yank on her hair? Perhaps he does it to punish her for not showing proper respect to their teacher. After all, she does say, in a somewhat dubious tone-of-voice,
"Lawgiver? Who knows about the future?"
It's as if she is blowing raspberries at the very notion that the so-called "savior" sent by "God" actually changed things, so that the "saved" Future can be known, even though the
intervening centuries haven't even gotten past the 1/3rd mark yet. A lot can happen in the remaining thirteen centuries. Hell, a lot can happen in a mere 85 years or so... the interval between A.D. 2670 and A.D.
2755. That cynical little human girl has every reason to be cynical... and so do you lousy human bastards who've seen each Apes film end in shocking, unsettling, and upsetting ways. Why should BATTLE
be any different?
Brent gets Taylor to accompany him to the Cathedral... in order to do something about that dangerous atomic bomb that those crazy mutants have been worshiping for 20 centuries... and, lo and behold, Taylor winds up
being the one who detonates it. Maybe if Brent had left Taylor to mourn over the corpse of Nova, and gone on alone
to the Cathedral with that rifle, maybe he could've found a way to avert the End of the World. But no... he has to bring Taylor along with him... a man who has just exclaimed,
"I should let them all die! The gorillas, every damned--look what it comes to! It's time it was finished!"
Brent's attempt to save the world failed miserably. And he was there, at the right place and at the right time, to do
something about it. Yet he failed. The clusterfuck of racial/religious/political conflict culminated in its obvious and inevitable conclusion. Apocalypse. What hope -- what real hope, hope that you can
count on -- should Caesar's six-centuries-later society cling to? Hope that the Future really was (or will be) saved? Or that it could
be saved, in time... in another twelve hundred and eighty-some years of time?
That cynical little girl was right
to voice her doubts. And, her lack-of-respect for their Lawgiver, I think, prompts an ape to put her in her place, to punish her for doubting the efficacy of their "savior's" intervention in History.
He uses physical violence to get back at her. And he attacks her from behind
; she doesn't even see it coming. One second she's cynically asking a valid question of their teacher, and the next second she's experiencing having her pony-tail yanked on by the chimp behind her.
Which proves the point. Conflict doesn't end. Even these children, simian and human, are trapped by the shared history of Conflict between Ape and Man. Roddenberry's
STAR TREK presents us with a rosy view of the Future where there still is conflict, true, but we survive
and thrive, and live in a harmony that people in the 1960's could only hope for, for the sake of future generations. The APES
saga presents us with the darker view of the Future where our ingrained faults have brought an end to our very civilization. We invent weapons of mass destruction... and eventually use them. It's who we are and
what we do. Zaius, in PLANET, was only the latest in the line of Guardians of the Terrible Secret
... who perpetuated policies that were designed to keep the Human Race in a state of barbarism, incapable of building more
weapons like the ones that turned a 'paradise' into the lifeless Forbidden Zone.
But there's that "lovely souvenir from the 20th Century"
lurking below the surface... both figuratively and literally. As long as it's out there, kept operational by crazy bastards who deem it the only reason for their existence, the world is doomed
. That's the sad, dark truth. That's the way POTA stories end, folks. There ain't no singin' kumbaya!
Patrick
P.S. Let it not be said, though, that it is appropriate for peoples in conflict to just throw up their hands and give up trying to escape the trap of a shared history of conflict. In To Kill a Mockingbird
, Atticus Finch knew beforehand that his legal defense of a black man accused of rape would be a failure... but he did his best anyway. He tried, despite the odds being stacked against him. Doing the right thing --
even when you know you'll fail -- is still worth doing. The lesson of the POTA saga is like the Kobayashi Maru test -- as it was intended, mind you, not as it became due to Kirk's cheating. It's a
No-Win-Scenario... but, how we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life. Nuff said.

According to this, the bulk of Fox's Oscar ad
dollars went to promoting Andy Serkis as Best Supporting Actor, and for their
cartoon "Rio". I assume that doesn't include Fox Searchlight's "The
Descendants", which is considered a Best Picture front runner.
Oscar nomination ballots are due back in 4 days
and the noms will be announced Jan. 24.

"Rise of the POTA" star James Franco recently
made a statement on behalf of Andy Serkis and the performance capture/Oscar
controversy. And Serkis is glad he did: "Sometimes for me it's very difficult
because it sounds like I'm tub-thumping, like I'm the sort of spokesman for
performance capture, and to have another actor lend their voice in such an
articulate way means a lot...part of the problem in accepting performance
capture as acting is born out of the fear and unknowing of what the process is,
and to have that explained by a fellow actor is terrific".
He adds: "It's not just about awards, no, of
course not. For myself what's most important is that actors begin to engage with
(performance capture), and with the process of using it".

So what about this performance capture
controversy that "Apes" is involved in. Does it matter?
I say it does and it goes back to the origins of
the "Apes" film series. Some fans have complained that POTA=makeup. But one of
the hallmarks of the original POTA was innovation. They made the Edward G.
Robinson makeup test to see if people would laugh at respected actors playing
apes. Over 40 years later they wondered the same thing while they were doing
"Rise". They didn't know if it would work until they started getting the CG
back.
In that sense it's more in keeping with "Apes"
tradition than POTA2001, which had makeup (and I think great makeup) but people
hardly took notice. With "Rise", for the first time in POTA history since the
original, people are talking about the ape creations. History has been made.
And for me it's a two part process. There's the
apes themselves (makeup or CG) and there's the performers. I think the original
POTA showed you could put "respected" actors in the makeup and they could do
meaty scenes in it and just do their thing. I think actors looked down on
wearing FX makeup at the time, it was the stuff of monster
movies, but here were respected actors like Maurice Evans and
Roddy McDowall acting like it's just another day at the office. Roddy became
something of an advocate of the makeup, showing others how to do it. And really,
isn't that what Andy Serkis is doing today with performance capture instead of
makeup? There had been other "classy" makeup movies before POTA ("Frankenstein",
"Wizard of Oz") just as there have been other performance capture movies that
advanced things ("Lord of the Rings", "Avatar"). But in both cases POTA is
arriving at a watershed moment both in terms of technique and in respect for the
performers.
Fox has spent a lot of dough stating the case. If
Serkis doesn't get a nomination is it wasted money? I don't think so because it
brought the topic to the forefront probably more than it ever has before. An
Oscar nomination for Serkis would make history but if it doesn't happen they
still made their point. People are at least thinking about it now as acting. One
can argue whether what we see on the screen is the performer or not but at least
they're more familiar with what's going on than "It's just stuntmen" or "It's
just their voices". In the original POTA the actors were on screen but all you
saw were their eyes and their movement. How different is that from performance
capture?
Fox is definitely putting their money where their
mouth is. Besides campaigning for Serkis, they grabbed him first for the sequel
and are paying him like a star. They could've said, "Take what we give you or
we'll find someone else". But they obviously know the value of what Serkis
brings. So in all those ways, Fox and POTA are pushing the boundaries like they
did 40 years ago. Just sayin'.

Very different I would say. With the actors in makeup you know the emotion of the performance is coming from them. With motion capture we still don't know when the 'acting' stops
and the computer artists take over.
Going back to the side by side face picture used by Fox in it's Oscar promotion thing, for me the only thing that was the same about the facial expressions is the shape of the eyebrows. So the computer artists must
have altered/added to the performance a fair bit.
After seeing Serkis in Tin Tin and what they've done with him and others in that, I think the computer adds a lot to his 'acting' myself.
I notice it seems to have changed from 'motion' capture to 'performance' capture now. Is this a subtle way to try and convince people that the computer artists just 'put the masks' on the actors
and don't have anything to do with the acting?

Those pictures aren't exact. They're publicity
pictures. There's plenty of side by side comparisons on the blu-ray and
online.
Here's one on Serkis:
And so it's not just Serkis, here's "Avatar" (with
Cameron calling it "a human performance with no diminishment"):
Back in the Gollum days it was "motion capture"
because the animators had to translate the emotions to the character. But I
guess the innovation was the face camera that captures the performance. Some
might even say the performance is purer than with makeup because they can
concentrate on acting without the strain of the makeup (claustrophobia, etc.).
I agree it's a hard sell. But it seems like the
actor coming through to me.

I just think this is always going to be the problem and the only way someone like Serkis in a performance capture role should get an Oscar is if all the computer artists who added to the performance share it as well.

They can tweak a human performance too. Use the
best take, use a double, some directors even combine takes using computers. If
the animators have to share an acting Oscar, so do makeup artists, hair
stylists, stunt doubles, acting coaches. It takes an army to make a
movie.
The thing is the performance capture actors
approach it as an acting role. They do their research, consult with the director
on how it should be played, they figure out the emotional details and they
perform the role. What the director does with the role (the editing, putting
music over it, etc.) is out of their hands. So it's still the same job,
acting.

Here's a write up of the screening of "Rise" at
Fox last Tuesday. Or at least the Andy Serkis stuff. It would seem Fox is
pushing for Serkis and Sound Editing nominations (a Visual FX nom is in the
bag).
Serkis said: "Acting is acting and performance
capture is just another method of recording actors' performance and I think
that's a really important thing for everyone to understand".
Asked about the alternative suggestion, a special
category for performance capture roles, he felt it would dilute the point: "I
firmly believe that it shouldn't be anything but acting
categories".

Subject: Fox's "Rise" screening

Lately James Franco has been speaking out on

for performance capture, and now he's speaking out to stop chimp testing in
laboratories.

Andy Serkis did a live chat yesterday (Friday)
with the L.A. Times and at the 23 minute mark he's asked about the "Apes"
sequel. "We're in very early discussions about, not about the making of it
because it will be made, but just about what exactly it will be. Where we choose
to drop into the ascendancy of the apes after the end of the last movie. Drafts
of it are being written as we speak and I think it's fairly imminent as to when
it's going to be shot".

Anyone else tried the 'apes will rise' app on Apple? Android had one but it was just news and wallpapers. The Apple one has a memory test...don't recall it from the movie
though. Both formats have the tower game though. Search Hanoi Tower. I wonder why the movie used a different name though. I got 17 moves so far.

This video has been making the internet rounds.
Andy Serkis playing Caesar getting left behind without CG. The Oscar nomination
ballots are in so whatever will be, will be. Rupert Wyatt said somewhere,
maybe on the blu-ray commentary, they were going to put the full movie on the
blu-ray without CG so one could watch the whole movie this way. That would've
been interesting but they didn't do it. Maybe on the next blu-ray.
I also heard this was a tough scene to CG because
Andy couldn't have the face camera (pressing up against the glass). I guess that
just underlines how much they relied on his performance.

I've watched that clip and to me it just shows how much the CG artists do add to his performance. Some of his facial expressions are comical when compared to what ends up on screen and
just reinforces my opinion that his 'performance' was not as spectacular as people are trying to make out.

I started taking notes of things that irked me but gave up pretty quickly (I would have run out of paper I think ;-)).
A couple of things though - if Caesar is so smart how come he is fooled by that painting on the walls of the primate sanctuary, even when he is up close?
Why is there a garbage bin out on the road between the car Lithgow tries to drive and the one in front of him that he crashes into along with said bin?
I also noticed when I slowed it down that Caesar does not actually bite off the neighbour's finger, you can clearly see the whole finger with some blood on the knuckle after it's been in his mouth, doesn't
even look like there's any damage apart from some blood on it.
And I know great apes are stronger than humans but could an oranutan really throw a manhole cover as far as it does when it hits the cop car windscreen?

a) Caesar is nervous about his new digs so he's
not thinking clearly about the painting or the window he smashes into (we've all
had those times when we miss the obvious)
b) it must be trash day (I can see Neil's copy of
"Rise" in there)
c) Caesar doesn't bite off the finger; the
director explains in the commentary they went back and forth on it and decided
it would damage the audience sympathy for Caesar. I don't know if you have the
blu-ray but there's a deleted scene where the finger is bit off.
d) I don't know if an orangutan could throw a
manhole cover but it's believable when I'm watching it. I'm more concerned about
the apes jumping out of the windows but who are we to argue with Oscar-winning
FX? At least it will be in February. ; )

Neil, give it up. You'll just frustrate yourself. I try not to think about the many things that bother me about this movie.... I've seen it twice and that's enough for a
lifetime. I gave it a second chance and that's all it's going to get.

5 Films Back-To-Back
with Actors In Person!
Planet Of The Apes Marathon
PLANET OF THE APES, 1968,
20th Century Fox, 119 min. Dir. Franklin
Schaffner. One of the greatest modern sci-fi
films, a combination of apocalyptic action
and evolutionary parable. Astronaut Charlton
Heston finds himself stranded on a strangely
familiar world dominated by a race of highly
intelligent gorillas, chimpanzees and
orangutans. Trailer
BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1970, 20th Century Fox, 94 min. Three years
before he directed the most somber of the
DIRTY HARRY sequels, MAGNUM FORCE, reliable
craftsman Ted Post took a similar approach
to the second - and scariest - entry in the
PLANET OF THE APES franchise. Astronaut
Brent (James Franciscus), on a rescue
mission looking for Taylor (Charlton
Heston), finds himself caught between apes
determined to wipe out humanity and a
subterranean cult of H-bomb-worshipping
mutants. It's a premise that leaves little
room for hope, but Post energizes the
material with riveting action sequences. The
result is an underrated combination of
stylish adventure and bleak philosophy that
seems timelier than ever in its examination
of man's terrifying potential for
self-annihilation. Co-starring Kim Hunter,
Linda Harrison, Maurice Evans. Trailer
ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1971, 20th Century Fox, 98 min. Dir. Don
Taylor. When chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira
(Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter) mysteriously
arrive on Earth in a spaceship, they are
greeted with wonder and quickly become a
media sensation. But this initial excitement
turns to suspicion, and the chimp couple
find themselves victims of a high-level
conspiracy. Trailer
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1972, 20th Century Fox, 88 min. Dir. J. Lee
Thompson. Roddy McDowall and Don Murray star
in the fourth PLANET OF THE APES film, which
takes place in the then-future 1990s! In a
political allegory timed to coincide with
the black power movement of the early 1970s,
the enslaved apes plot to overthrow the
human race that has oppressed them; this
ambitious and entertaining sci-fi classic
served as a template for last year's RISE OF
THE PLANET OF THE APES. Trailer
BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1973, 20th Century Fox, 93 min. Dir. J. Lee
Thompson. The fifth and final film in the
APES franchise finds the title characters
battling mutant humans. Roddy McDowall
returns as Caesar, and Claude Akins and John
Huston provide support to help bring the
series full circle. Trailer

Last week Fox held a "Rise" screening that
emphasized sound editing. That seemed to pay off because "Rise" got two
nominations from (the Guild?) for Best Dialogue and Best FX sound editing. So as
we head to the Oscar nominations next Tuesday, a Visual FX nomination seems to
be a lock, a Sound editing nom looks a possibility. Andy Serkis, not likely but
with all the publicity...perchance. Best Picture? Not in a million years, but
WETA movies have done well with Best Picture noms in the past. All 3 "Lord of
the Rings" movies, "Avatar", and the big shocker "District 9" all got Best Pic
noms. We'll know in about 4 days.
