Yeah – I asked them if they were
considering doing this and they gave me a “just wait and see!”.
They probably mulled over it and realized they
were not about to offer anything that could not be got cheaper.

The only interesting reason to do it would be to
finish it with Ploog and Moench. Didn't you say they suggested something like
that (with a non-answer)? Maybe they're still working that out.

TerrorFYING!
I have been told Terror is on hold.
I’m not sure why.
Personally I have been wondering why anyone would bother
with ANOTHER reissue!
That's why I asked them if it's coloured....NOTHING comes
out without colour now...or if they had planned to provide a conclusion.
Anyone interested in TERROR can still get the originals at a
good price or the ADVENTURE reissues at a good price.
I hope they have put it on hold to add colour, and to finish
it off, and make it a trade paperback. Now THAT would sell, particularly
if they get Moench and Ploog involved.
Otherwise the new series would only have lasted till they
realised nobody needs it! I mean what could they offer - new
covers? And 3 or 4 each of them?
Anyway, here's hoping they it would have are fine tuning
this and it's not the death bell for their apes comics!

Yeah, it was fun. A little too talky. It really
picked up at the end and I wouldn't mind a sequel (though it won't
happen). Some of the Lake Powell stuff looked straight out of POTA68,
especially when they were on the river. The marketing for the movie was
terrible, very bland.

I got a email from my comics shop which lists the status of all my pending purchases and it now shows that Terror 1, 2, and 3 are 'Cancelled', while it shows that Terror 4 is still
'Pending'. Now this could be some automatic timeout thing where the distributor, Diamond, just says give the people who've paid their money back because these have been on hold for too long (and would have
to be re-listed anyway if they were to go ahead). But after so long, I'm guessing that this is a lot more complicated that a minor glitch and in all likelihood we won't be seeing it.
For what it's worth, I just read the latest issue of the POTA ongoing series and some of the art was amazing. Still enjoying the story there.

The only interesting reason to do it would be to finish it with Ploog and Moench. Didn't you say they suggested something like that (with a non-answer)? Maybe they're still working that out.

I have been told Terror is on hold.
I'm not sure why.
Personally I have been wondering why anyone would bother with ANOTHER reissue!
That's why I asked them if it's coloured....NOTHING comes out without colour now...or if they had planned to provide a conclusion.
Anyone interested in TERROR can still get the originals at a good price or the ADVENTURE reissues at a good price.
I hope they have put it on hold to add colour, and to finish it off, and make it a trade paperback. Now THAT would sell, particularly if they get Moench and Ploog involved.
Otherwise the new series would only have lasted till they realised nobody needs it! I mean what could they offer - new covers? And 3 or 4 each of them?
Anyway, here's hoping they it would have are fine tuning this and it's not the death bell for their apes comics!

It looks like BOOM!'s rerelease of the the
vintage POTA comic series "Terror on the POTA" has been mothballed for now. It's
still unclear what their plans were with this. Besides being featured in
Marvel's POTA magazine in the '70's, the first 8 segments were reprinted by
Adventure Comics in the early '90's. So about every 20 years it raises it's
head. Were they planning something unique? Colorization? A conclusion? Maybe
enlisting original creators Mike Ploog and Doug Moench to finish it? Since this
is ground zero for POTA comics it would be fun to build an event around it.
Certainly some folks were looking forward to it:
And so we must be patient...and wait. Meanwhile,
what is Terror's place in the POTA legacy? It's certainly part of the POTA
Golden Age, along with Megos, Go Ape marathons and apple pie. Is it iconic? Is
it moronic? Where does "Terror" stand almost 40 years later? And is a reprint
wanted? So many questions.
Meanwhile, apes that go BOOM! have been around a
year this month. With years of new POTA movies on the horizon
maybe they will even give Marvel a run for their money.

French scientists have shown that baboons can
recognize four letter words (not those kinds of four letter words!) and
distinguish them from random letters. That doesn't mean they can read but they
can recognize the word as an object and perhaps it gives a clue to how we learn
words as well. So perhaps one day if they see the words "rise" and "apes" it
will signal the revolution. Also, check out how fast they pick out the words. As
with sequencing numbers, they're faster than we are.

Just read your review of my book--thanks! I appreciate the praise, and always welcome criticism as well. All writers, be they amateurs or professionals, should always be looking improve their craft, and I always strive
to make my next book better than the last.
I just wanted to clarify a few points, which perhaps didn't come through as clearly as I had wanted them to in the novel-- some readers seemed to have picked up on these points, and others have not.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
1. ABOUT THE MUTANTS' POWERS
Throughout the second film, the mutants comment on how they are "defenseless", but the promo newspaper that came out prior to the film stated that they had a General of the Defense. While under no obligation to
make these conflicting statements connect, doing just that was part of the challenge I had set before me in crafting this book. My concept was that with this man's power, because of his family line and their
particular mutation, the mutants were much more powerful than otherwise shown AFTER he is no longer part fo their command structure (as is the case in Beneath). In the process of attempting total control of Landon, the
General is overloaded by the feedback of raw primal emotion-- and is turned into a vegetable, leaving the rest of the mutants 'defenseless' for the second film (at least, in range and potency).
Remember the night in the camp, when Landon awakens, thinking he sees someone, and then is distracted by a "meteorite" slamming into the desert behind him (an illusion) -- the mutants were there, and had
psychically 'tagged' him in that moment, like you might tag a deer and set it free to track it's range and habits. The entire scene after that is all mutant illusion, as well.
The music he heard, a favorite song from his childhood, served as a distraction, playing in the back of his head, which he could use to concentrate on, and break their control, temporarily. They had prevented him from
speaking, because they did not want him to reveal anything that might clue their enemy (the apes - whose technological ability they were as of yet unclear of) might use to realize he was under their control, as their
unwitting "spy".
The mutants, in the end, don't exhibit the power they do here in 'Beneath' because with the loss of the General of the Defense, their conduit--their focal point of their power-- they have been robbed of these
abilities.
2. ABOUT THE LANDON AND TAYLOR CONFLICT
The party scene, and Landon's hatred of Taylor, are a fabrication of his mind, spurned on by the mutants. Taylor's attitude is presented exactly as in the film-- he's in charge, he doesn't care about what
they left behind, and Landon better "grow up" and deal with it- but he certainly doesn't hate the man.
In reality- there was no "love triangle" -- Stewart had had an affair with Landon in their previous mission, and that was it, as far as she was concerned. The Mutants grabbed hold of Landon's feelings of
loss, regret that Stewart was dead, and the arguments with Taylor and AMPLIFIED them in his mind, so they could turn him against Taylor (clearly the alpha of the group) and keep the Colonel from undermining their fact
finding mission.
If Taylor had even ever slept with Stewart, John Landon wouldn't be privy to it. He might have suspicions, but it is those types of thoughts that the mutants can seize upon and use to pervert someone to acts they do
not wish to commit (like forcing Brent to strangle Nova, or Brent to fight Taylor). Taylor's true feelings about Stewart will be revealed in Death of the Planet of the Apes.
If you watch the film again, you will see times when Landon is simply staring into the sand, not really there...
...and those were the moments when the mutants were feeding these thoughts into his head.
Remember: all of Landon's hatred in my novel is in his head-- never does he tell Taylor he hates him, or attack the man-- but he hears whispers on the wind telling him to "Kill Taylor."
To Taylor, Landon was simply someone who needed to grow a pair and accept their new reality. Taylor was truly saddened to see John's mind had been cut out.
I hope that shed's some light on the points you had some issues with, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Drew Gaska

.htmlThanks for taking the time to explain a few things Drew.
Given that Landon was under the influence of the mutants much earlier on than I thought him to be certainly does clear up some of the misconceptions on my part. I'm not sure if I missed something obvious or if it
could have been made more clear in the book exactly at which point Landon fell under their influence.
I agree that the love triangle I alluded to should have been described as a 'perceived' love triangle and that it was clear to me that Stewart did not really have any feelings for Landon. It was something that
assumed right from the start. However from the film's point view at least we really don't see much more than superficial animosity from Landon directed towards Taylor. So I don't completely buy into the
notion that even if it was only in Landon's head that there was this overt hatred and hostility. Landon would have exposed at least some of his feelings towards Taylor and we really see none of that in the movie, at
least not to the degree implied here.
In any case I hope it was clear that as a whole I certainly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to Death on the POTA. Please be sure to update us on any progress you can share with us.
I do have one question I'm really hoping that you can answer in the affirmative. Will we be getting the same type glorious illustrations and art as in Conspiracy? Not to undermine the story value, but that art was
worth the price of the book alone.

Get your mind out of the gutter! What I mean is
"Rise of the POTA" director Rupert Wyatt is reportedly going to direct a sci-fi
movie called "Agent 13" starring Charlize Theron. "Rise" has made the director
hot! hot! hot! Does this mean there's a snag on "Rise 2"? Dunno, but last I
heard Wyatt is under contract to do the sequel next (he had to turn down doing
the movie "Londongrad" so he could get apeing pronto). Probably this is just
another for his "To Do" list but I'll take any news I can get from the "Rise 2"
camp.

The new Disney Nature doc "Chimpanzee"
opened this weekend. It's not # 1 but reportedly it's doing the best of the
Disney Nature films. For opening week, part of every ticket goes to help Jane
Goodall's organization. Of course, Disney has a long history of doing these
entertaining nature docs that tell a story.
This one tells of an orphaned chimp that is
personally adopted by the group's alpha male. Goodall says this is a very rare
thing but it happened for the cameras.
Sounds like a good movie, so you won't feel like
a chump if you go chimp! <.html <.html

Travel back with me through
the mists of time, children, to an age when Bill Blake and Paula Crist WERE the
POTA (so said Marvel's POTA magazine). For many decades "Salvation on the POTA"
had no sound. Recently, in 2012, the sound was found. 2012, that's only 3 years
ago! No, wait, that's THIS year! So, let's go back through the mists of time,
children.

prints
CinemaCon, the big soiree for NATO (the
National Association of Theater Owners), is happening in Vegas. Arthur Jacobs
created special reels of footage for "Planet" and "Beneath" for them back in the
day (which had footage not seen in the films:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLEGGCF4UPs
),
and last year CinemaCon gave us our first look at Rise's CG Caesar. This year
came the announcement that Fox is the first studio to end distribution of 35 mm
prints within the next two years in favor of digital. The end of an era and I
guess your last chance to see POTA in 35 if you can find it.
CinemaCon also provided a look at the future by
showing 10 minutes of "The Hobbit" in it's 48 frames per second glory instead of
the traditional 24. It will be the first film released that way. The reaction
was mixed, with some feeling it looks fantastic and others that it looks too
good (I guess), too clear. Perhaps like the debate over HD vs. those who like
film grain. But it sounds like "Hobbit" will have a similar visual impact at the
end of the year to what "Avatar" had with 3D. Maybe a future POTA
movie will be shot in 48. Many of the "Hobbit" folks did "Rise of the
POTA".
Out with the old, in with the new.

Not sure about the others but I did not say anything because this was kind of old news to me. It was put on Facebook in one of the POTA groups there a few weeks ago. Surprised that you did
not see it there. If you haven't done so already I recommend you join the FB POTA groups. Sure a lot of the info and media that pops up are 'old hat' to us, but there are a few interesting things that pop up
every now and then as well (this being an good example). If nothing else, you get to see all of Jessica's cool projects all the time. :)

Oh, Facebook is evil alright. No doubt about it. Right up there with sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. But sometimes you just want to have fun. :)
On a more sombre note, this group and all the others using Yahoo as a host should seriously consider a "plan B". Yahoo had another dismal financial quarter and if things don't improve they could pull the
plug on their group hosting services at any time. They already have said that the discussion groups won't be affected, but just the fact that they made that statement is evidence enough that at one point it was
discussed and also something that they knew people needed immediate reassurances on.
I don't want to be the alarmist, sky is falling down, messenger of bad news, but I don't want to stand silently by and just ignore the signs either. So far it looks like 'plan B' is facebook where just
like o Yahoo, they already have more than one POTA group. I'll be the first to admit that I don't like it as much as this or the 'other' Yahoo group, but at least it does offer another discussion venue.
Ideally we would have a dedicated discussion forum site but those that have popped in the past have never gained any real traction unless I've really missed to boat on one.

I know Neil. And that's why I hope that we can come up with a better "Plan B" than Facebook. But the nail is not in the coffin yet. I just wish that Yahoo was a stable company
instead of in what seems to be a death spiral. What bugs me is that they DO have plenty of active discussion groups, but have not figured out some way to capitalize on what they've got.

Likewise, I saw this on Facebook too, even though I haven't really gotten involved in it's POTA groups.
I don't think I'm betraying any confidences, but... Vern Dietsche (who made 'Salvation') tells me that he's back in contact with Bill and talking about doing another Apes project. That's as much
as I know, but it could be cool.

Not sure about the
USA Mike
(sorry!).
Look it up on the internet (sometimes they
have full episodes too!).
I forgot the name of the episode with the
guy who collects costumes in LA and has the full size lawgiver in his yard (was
Miss Trundy’s) but I am fairly sure it’s episode 7 “Joe Goes Ape”.
The other two episodes of interest are “Monsters
and Miracles” with Brian from ApeMania, and “Blood, Sweat and Terminators”
which has Les Hemstock with the Lawgiver’s head from
Battle .

Heads up! There's going to be a Danny

questions. Obviously it's a promo for his 14th collaboration with Tim Burton
(they did POTA!) called "Dark Shadows" and featuring Jackie Earle "Kraik"
Hailey. It opens next week.

"The Avengers" has exploded box office records:
the biggest domestic opening weekend ever ($200 million) and around $640 million
worldwide in 10 days. You can be sure Hollywood will dissect it's success to
take the temperature of the moviegoing public. With Fox figuring out where to go
with their POTA franchise, could they maybe lay the groundwork for a huge team
up movie down the road? Maybe we'll finally get that "Ape Nation" movie we've
wanted for so long. Or perhaps POTA can join forces with Fox's other big
franchises? "Alien vs. Predator" was thinking small. Audiences want to see
"Alien", "Predator", "Die Hard", "X-Men" and POTA team up against a common foe.
Or this! The different versions of POTA could team up. Cornelius and Zira from
POTA68 (recast of course), Attar and Limbo from POTA2001 and Caesar and Koba
from "Rise" all get together to stop, I don't know, we'll figure that out later.
We must change with the times.

I went to the Danny Elfman Q & A (5/8/12).
I'll just say I'm an Elfman fan and have been for a long time. What's relevant
here is he did the score for Burton's POTA2001. Say what you will about the
film, but I loved Danny's music and still do. And while I'm at it, I'm also a
Tim Burton fan. So in that sense maybe I was more disappointed in POTA2001 than
the average POTA fan. Or maybe not. I consider it a disappointment but
there is much I can enjoy (the look, Danny's music, etc.). Anyway, I don't
know if folks can separate the movie from Danny's music but I think Danny did
music that could be a highlight of POTAdom.
Anyway, I have several Elfman CDs; Oingo
Boingo, 2 compilation CDs of "Music For Darkened Theater", "Big Fish", POTA2001,
"Nightmare Before Christmas" (besides doing the music, Danny was the singing
voice of Jack Skelington). After the evening I enjoyed revisiting
those.
So, there wasn't anything POTA in this Q & A
except someone asked him about the La La Land Records reissues (including the
recent POTA2001 3-CD set) and he said he has nothing to do with those and is
just as surprised as we are what they put out (one might assume the composer has
a role in those). Other things that stick out are that he considers "Mars
Attacks" his easiest score and "Big Fish" (what I consider the best Burton film
in the last 18 years or so) his hardest. He also talks about writing "The
Simpsons" theme in his car and so much more. Elfman fans and film score fans
might enjoy this. I don't know how long it will stay up but good times. There
was many more people than they planned for and they gave out "Dark Shadows"
posters that everyone wanted signed so Danny had to get the hell out of there,
but he did try to sign what he could. He signed my Eric Greene book and I can
say he's a good guy who appreciates his fans. Also, the guy asking the questions
is Jeff Bond, who has done his share of liner notes for great POTA CDs. From
what I understand, he's doing a book about Elfman.

Richard Zanuck was the studio exec who
greenlighted the original POTA and because of that the studio felt he was an
inspired choice to produce POTA2001. During that he bonded with the director,
Tim Burton, and for the last decade the two have worked together. POTA was
personal for Burton for other reasons. He met the love of his life, Helena
Bonham Carter on it, and he lost his father during it (as did composer Danny
Elfman). According to Burton and Zanuck, commiserating over the death was what
brought them together. Their "Dark Shadows" opens tomorrow.

Here is a thing about the classic movie
"Spartacus". Certain POTA groups censor things that are off the beaten path but
I don't care. I think they are important. I felt that "Rise of the POTA" was
very much a Moses story (an infant saved, who is raised in privilege but
eventually is returned to his own people and leads them to freedom) and brought
that up when I met the director Rupert Wyatt. He agreed with me but this is more
the screenwriter's idea. As for Wyatt he is a big Kubrick fan. He has compared
his ideas for the "Rise" sequel to "Full Metal Jacket". And when he talks about
"Rise" itself he has compared it more to "Spartacus" than Moses. That's
fine. I think the Moses comparison rocks, since that is Heston's most famous
role. But getting inspiration from Kubrick is nothing to sneeze at. And
Kubrick's "2001" will always be connected to the original POTA in my mind since
they came out months apart and both expanded the idea of what movie sci-fi could
be.
Anyway, Kirk Douglas' recent comment about
"Spartacus" resonated with me about "Rise of the POTA", especially since it was
a touchstone for the director: "I made a film about freedom at a time when
freedom was in jeopardy and a blacklist had been in effect in Hollywood for more
than a decade. There are parallels in today's political climate which is why a
hero like Spartacus still resonates".

of Spartacus
Here is a thing about the classic movie
"Spartacus". Certain POTA groups censor things that are off the
beaten path but I don't care. I think they are important. I felt that
"Rise of the POTA" was very much a Moses story (an infant saved, who
is raised in privilege but eventually is returned to his own people and leads
them to freedom) and brought that up when I met the director Rupert Wyatt. He
agreed with me but this is more the screenwriter's idea. As for Wyatt he is a
big Kubrick fan. He has compared his ideas for the "Rise" sequel to
"Full Metal Jacket". And when he talks about "Rise" itself
he has compared it more to "Spartacus" than Moses. That's fine.
I think the Moses comparison rocks, since that is Heston's most famous role.
But getting inspiration from Kubrick is nothing to sneeze at. And Kubrick's
"2001" will always be connected to the original POTA in my mind since
they came out months apart and both expanded the idea of what movie sci-fi
could be.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that a new writer
has been enlisted on the "Rise of the POTA" sequel. It's Scott Burns. Who? Don't
play dumb! He wrote "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Informant!" but
interestingly he also wrote "Contagion" about a virus taking out humanity.
"Rise" itself had a revolving door of writers
before going back to the original writers, who have also worked on "Rise 2".

| Subject: Why did Taylor name her 'Nova'? |
.html
In the fifth chapter of Boulle's novel, Ulysse Merou informs his readers that he himself had given the beautiful native Soror female human a name:
"This gorgeous creature--in a romantic flight of fancy I had christened her 'Nova,' able to compare her appearance only to that of a brilliant star--Nova had strangled a harmless pet
animal with her own hands."
We get the astronomical word nova from a book Tycho Brahe wrote about a "new star" that had appeared in 1572, titled
De Nova Stella (Latin for "Concerning the New Star"
). Actual novae aren't really 'new' stars, for the most part. They're previously invisible stars rendered visible due to a sudden increase in luminosity, such as when material from an accretion disk
gloms onto the surface of a white dwarf star, causing it to flare up. And, in fact, the event Tycho Brahe witnessed was actually a type I supernova, which has left behind a radio and x-ray source, an expanding supernova
remnant.
In my scenario, in which I'm attempting to provide answers for all sorts of unanswered questions regarding the details of the POTA films/episodes, it behooves me to wonder if there might be a reason -- different
from Ulysse Merou's explanation -- for Taylor to have thought to name his cage-mate "Nova."
Also... Why did Taylor (et al.) go into hibernation some six ship-time months
after
their launch? Why didn't they conserve their food supplies (etc) by spending, say, months 2 through 17 in hibernation, and remain awake only during their first month, to reawaken in time for their final, 18th
month? What reason might there have been for Taylor & Crew to stay awake during the first third of their voyage? If they could have saved themselves another 4 months-worth of supplies by hibernating, why didn't
they?
In my scenario, Taylor -- but not
his crew -- is aware of the fact that the place to which their ship is heading is a star system in-the-making. Privy to some kind of insider knowledge that is being withheld from his underlings, Taylor knows that
the world they will find will be Earth-like, with a star in the sky that is a virtual twin of Sol. "How long is a day?" asks Dodge, and Taylor won't be surprised to find that the day is
exactly the same duration as Earth's day.
Nor is Taylor surprised to find terrestrial
lifeforms on this planet. From the fruit they're eating whilst perusing Nova's tribe in the cornfield, to the tribe of mute humans... to the Apes and the horses they ride upon... none
of this surprises Taylor -- other than the fact that the Apes are "evolved," clothes-wearing horse-riders capable of speech, and that the Humans are mute savages.
Nor is Taylor surprised to find that the English language
is spoken there. Zaius brings up the question of their common language during their confrontation in his office following the Hearing. How is it that English
is spoken on the planet of the apes, which Taylor assumes is a world in "another solar system" situated 320 light-years from Earth?
In my scenario, representatives of a "United Galaxy" have formed a preservation society which has as its goal the salvaging of terrestrial flora and fauna -- before Mankind has the opportunity to kill off
most of it. In the mid-to-late 18th Century, the "UGPS" [United Galaxy Preservationist Society] knows that Mankind is on the verge of a population explosion, an industrial revolution, and a bloodbath of mass
extinction of indigenous animal species. What to do?
The UGPS decides to prepare a "New Earth" -- a tailor-made solar system with an Earth-like planet in it onto which they can transplant terrestrial plant- and animal-life. An "ark"-load of flora
and fauna is collected and sent out on a trip to the site of that system-in-the-making: over the course of almost 710 Earth-years, beginning around the start of May of 1790, that "space-ark" loaded with
Earth-life will set out across the 320 light-year distance separating our Solar System from what will be called the "Shen" System -- named for a nearby asterism [in Chinese astronomy] in Orion's
"head."
During that 710-year period, the UGPS will literally create that Shen system. They will create the very Sun-like star that will provide sunlight for the "New Earth" that will be placed in an appropriate
spot to receive its rays. It will take around 236.555... Earth-years for the UGPS to create the star, so that the one-solar-mass condensing globe of hydrogen ignites in the year A.D. 2026... an event that an Earth-based
observer won't witness until the light-image of that stellar birth crosses the 320 light-year distance, in A.D. 2346.
When Taylor (et al.) launch from Cape Kennedy in January of 1972, the star system they're intended to reach isn't even there yet!
It is in the process of being created, and -- travelling at relativistic velocities according to Hasslein's Theory -- they will be able to witness the creation of that star system in a "time-lapse"
manner, since about 2006.86 years of Earth-time are telescoped into a mere 18 months of Ship-time.
Eventually, towards the end of their 3rd Month of Ship-time, they will see the nuclear ignition of their destination star, as their space-time location intercepts the outwardly-expanding image of that event from
A.D. 2026. Over the course of another 236.555... Earth-years, that "new" star, that literal NOVA
, will take on an orbital wobble: the UGPS will have also created a micromass black hole which will be fed with mass to the point where it will eventually top out at 152 solar masses. Orbiting that immense black hole
at a distance of 499 light-seconds [i.e. one astronomical unit], the star will have an orbital period of 29.53... Earth-days. The world which will be named "New Earth" will be put into the L-5 libration point,
trailing the orbiting star 60 degrees behind it in the same orbital path.
In addition, a pair of identical white dwarf stars -- each weighing in at 1.3 solar masses -- will orbit each other as they both orbit the central black hole at a distance just a hair further out than Jupiter's
orbit of our Sun: the period of this white dwarf binary's orbit of Shen [i.e. the black hole] will be 365.2422 years.
Somebody living on New Earth would, therefore, experience three distinct time periods which are essentially the same as those experienced by Earth: a "day" of 24 hours (one axial rotation relative to the
'sun' in the sky), a "month" of 29.53 days (in New Earth's case, its L-5 orbital period shared with the star around the central black hole), and a "year" of 365.2422 days (in New
Earth's case, the period of the "dual lights" orbiting further out at a distance of about 5.34 AU).
Taylor, from an ever-decreasing distance, will be a witness to the creation of this new star system, having seen the "new" star -- the NOVA
-- ignite into existence near the end of the 3rd month of his journey. Over the course of the next 3 months, prior to finally going into hibernation with his crew, Taylor will see that new star take on an oscillation
around an invisible companion, the black hole named Shen, an orbital period that will top out at ~ 29.53 days.
Taylor, upon seeing that "nova" light up the skies of Orion, will think it to be the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. Beautiful especially because it is created especially for Earth life... created
by "people" who aren't Earthlings, yet who treasure the panoply of Life that had evolved on our world... who treasure it more than we Humans seem to do.
Taylor is a seeker: he seeks "something better than Man"... and he has every reason to believe that the creator(s) of the "New Earth" towards which they're heading are
better than we are.
I've said that the destination world had been named "New Earth"... because the men who sent Taylor on his journey somehow knew that, by A.D. 3978, there would be such a world orbiting Shen in the L-5
libration point of the star orbiting it. So, why does Taylor tell Landon that they've landed on "an UNNAMED PLANET" (etc)?
The answer? Their flightplan involved de-warping at the L-4 libration point, 60 degrees ahead of the orbiting star. They were to "park" their mothership there and then fly one of the three shuttles across,
from L-4 to L-5 in one "microjump" across the chord. They believed that the L-5 point would have the named planet -- New Earth -- occupying it... believing that the L-4 point would be empty.
Taylor (wrongly) assumes that they're in the Shen System, having de-warped at the L-4 spot... but with that L-4 spot now occupied by a SECOND PLANET, a planet that had not been anticipated by the ANSA mission
planners and, hence, had not been given a name.
If the creator(s) of that very star system could position a planet at the L-5 point, then they could just as easily have placed another planet at the L-4 point, too. And why not? It's the only other stable place
where an Earth-like world could be placed and still receive sunlike doses of radiation from the star orbiting Shen. It's a "two-fer"... and it's their misfortune that the Orion Mission's planners
at ANSA assumed it would remain empty.
Taylor assumes their mothership dewarped in the gravity well of this "unnamed" yet similarly Earth-like world, and that everything except his 4-seater shuttlecraft was destroyed in the crisis it found
itself in. For all Taylor knows, the mothership had decoupled from its attached shuttlecraft and had sunk to the bottom of Dead Lake before he, Landon, and Dodge had awoken from hibernation.
At any rate... after finding that first life-form, after discovering the waterfall... the footprint... the tribe of mute humans... Taylor sees that 'primitive' woman. And it's evident that he likes what
he sees, even if the impression she makes on him isn't quite as extravagant as the one made on Ulysse Merou in Boulle's novel.
But Taylor doesn't have time to give this woman a name. The gorilla hunters show up and things go to hell in a hand-basket in short order. It isn't until after
he gets his voice back... "weeks" later, when Taylor is alone in his cage with the "present" that Zira had given him...
"Only you... No-va. You: Nova. You--"
[she shuts him up, placing her hand over his mouth] "Yeah... Me Tarzan, you Jane..."
Taylor, who had seen a new star -- a literal "nova" -- flame into existence, and who believes he's on a world in an orbital position 1 AU away from it, names this woman after the most beautiful thing
he had ever seen. A star that, in a way, represented a second chance for Earth life after the dreadful trends of 20th Century Man's treatment of his own homeworld.
In my scenario,
that's why he names her Nova.

My dad died last Sunday and his memorial is
Saturday. I bring it up because of the POTA connections. My own POTA adventures
meant he knew Natalie Trundy and Bill "stage Cornelius" Blake personally. One of
my favorite POTA memories is when I took Natalie to a sci-fi convention because
Charlton Heston was going to be there. It was just after POTA2001 was greenlit.
Linda Harrison was there and one of her sons and we hung with Heston and then
Natalie and Linda took me to lunch. Anyway, the next day was my dad's birthday
(so I guess April 2000) and it didn't occur to me to say something, I guess
Natalie did, and Linda signed one of her hotter pictures to my dad, saying, "You
were fantastic last night!". Just a terrific idea for an autographed photo and
he loved it. That was such a sweet gesture from Natalie and Linda and I
will always be grateful. My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid
or an adult and that's something I was sad about but such are
relationships.
Another thing that occurred to me lately is how
the death of a father is significant in both the POTA movies that came out in
the last almost 40 years. There's the scene between Thade and his father (played
by Heston himself). Yeah, people groan about that scene (damn, they got Heston
in ape makeup and that's the best they could come up with?) but I'm always moved
by Thade's reaction to his dad's death. This scene is significant because Tim
Burton's dad died during preproduction on POTA2001. Reportedly he was never
close to his folks but there was something there because his next film was the
ode to fatherhood "Big Fish". As it turns out, I love that movie and the song
Eddie Vedder wrote for it, "Man of the Hour" and in fact I'm quoting it in the
memorial card people will receive at my dad's service:
And the road the old man paved
The broken seams along the way
The rusted signs left just for me
He was guiding me
Love, his own way
Now the man of the hour
Is taking his final bow
As the curtain comes down
I feel this is just goodbye for now
And of course the death of a father plays a big
part in "Rise of the POTA" (it could be considered the reason the POTA is born).
My dad was struggling with his health when that came out and I felt it was a
pretty interesting theme for the original POTA generation. They were kids when
the original POTA movies came out and now many of them are dealing with the same
thing Will is in the movie, aging parents.
So, here's to you dad, and to all the POTA
fathers who are struggling.

.htmlMy condolences on your loss.
Given the age of the majority of POTA fans here, I would imagine that most of us are sympathetic to the situation you just faced. I know that I am. I guess I am one of the luckier ones in that both my parents are still
alive, but they are definitely in their twilight years. At least you were able to share some POTA memories together. I doubt most of us can claim even that.
Take care,
Dario

My dad died last Sunday and his memorial is Saturday. I bring it up because of the POTA connections. My own POTA adventures meant he knew Natalie Trundy and Bill "stage Cornelius" Blake personally. One of my
favorite POTA memories is when I took Natalie to a sci-fi convention because Charlton Heston was going to be there. It was just after POTA2001 was greenlit. Linda Harrison was there and one of her sons and we hung with
Heston and then Natalie and Linda took me to lunch. Anyway, the next day was my dad's birthday (so I guess April 2000) and it didn't occur to me to say something, I guess Natalie did, and Linda signed one of her
hotter pictures to my dad, saying, "You were fantastic last night!". Just a terrific idea for an autographed photo and he loved it. That was such a sweet gesture from Natalie and Linda and I will always be
grateful. My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid or an adult and that's something I was sad about but such are relationships.
Another thing that occurred to me lately is how the death of a father is significant in both the POTA movies that came out in the last almost 40 years. There's the scene between Thade and his father (played by Heston
himself). Yeah, people groan about that scene (damn, they got Heston in ape makeup and that's the best they could come up with?) but I'm always moved by Thade's reaction to his dad's death. This scene is
significant because Tim Burton's dad died during preproduction on POTA2001. Reportedly he was never close to his folks but there was something there because his next film was the ode to fatherhood "Big
Fish". As it turns out, I love that movie and the song Eddie Vedder wrote for it, "Man of the Hour" and in fact I'm quoting it in the memorial card people will receive at my dad's service:
And the road the old man paved
The broken seams along the way
The rusted signs left just for me
He was guiding me
Love, his own way
Now the man of the hour
Is taking his final bow
As the curtain comes down
I feel this is just goodbye for now
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/05/10/dark-shadows-tim-burton-and-richard-zanuck-form-a-family/
And of course the death of a father plays a big part in "Rise of the POTA" (it could be considered the reason the POTA is born). My dad was struggling with his health when that came out and I felt it was a
pretty interesting theme for the original POTA generation. They were kids when the original POTA movies came out and now many of them are dealing with the same thing Will is in the movie, aging parents.
So, here's to you dad, and to all the POTA fathers who are struggling. <.html

Sad news Jeff.
Neil lost his mother not too long ago.
Both my parents are still alive but both
over 70 so I am wishing we got on better!

Thank you for all the sympathy about my dad,
including those who contacted me privately. I'd didn't post about it for
sympathy, I felt it was a legit topic, but sympathy feels good. My dad and I
couldn't have been more different but we never let that get in our way, so no
regrets. The service turned out really good. Here's his obit and video
tribute:

Thanks again. My cousin is in town from St. Louis
and we're going to watch "Rise of the POTA" today (the 75th anniversary of the

40 years ago yesterday (Saturday) was the Phoenix
preview of "Conquest of the POTA", which resulted in a softening of the film. Of
course, less violence and a more politically correct Caesar. It also resulted in
Lisa being the first ape to say "No". Director J. Lee Thompson said in "POTA
Revisited" that some were also complaining at the preview that people were
being cruel to animals in the film. Would the original version have changed
POTA's rep all these years? Dunno, but I'm glad the 2008 version restored
it. <.html <.html

The Golden Gate Bridge is 75 today. One of the
problems that stalled finishing the "Rise of the POTA" script was figuring out
the geography for the San Francisco action. According to the writers, Fox head
Tom Rothman suggested using the Golden Gate Bridge as an iconic landmark a la
the Statue of Liberty and then the geography and ending fell into
place.

Subject: "Rise" as a gateway drug
Due to circumstances in the last month I've had
the opportunity to show family members "Rise of the POTA". Not because it's POTA
but because it's a recent movie I have that they haven't seen but heard about
and want to see. I'm pretty well known in the family as a POTA fan but it's a
little different than being a "Star Trek" fan or "Star Wars" fan. At least that
they could understand. During most of my life POTA was seen as "B" movies by
many, including the classic original. So it's kind of interesting that a POTA
movie is something they want to see and wind up loving. I've show "Rise" to
relatives I haven't seen in almost 30 years. I even got to show it to the
parents of the babysitter who introduced me to POTA in the first place. Not only
do they enjoy it but I think "Rise" deals with the themes that made us POTA fans
in the first place (some "Rise" haters might disagree). So I've found myself
with family that now "gets" POTA. In that sense it's kind of a vindication.
My aunt liked POTA and was probably my closest POTA ally in the family. She
liked to mention a TV review she saw when the original came out that said
basically, you might not be interested in a movie called "Planet of the Apes"
but go see it. You'll be glad you did. Unfortunately my aunt died in 2010 so she
didn't get to see "Rise" and I'm sorry she didn't. I think she would've loved
it. Ironically, the last movie we saw together was the Andy Serkis "King Kong"
(which made her cry). She also got to know Natalie Trundy and they got on well,
which was cool. My aunt gave me my first POTA item, a Mego gorilla
soldier.
So, does anyone have "Rise" vindication stories?
Maybe you don't even like "Rise" but you have friends or relatives who "get"
POTA now because of it? <.html <.html

So what's the consensus about the current title
for the "Rise" sequel, "Dawn of the POTA"? On the 'net there seems to be a mixed
reaction, with some loving it and others not so much ("Rise" and "Dawn" seeming
too similar). I dunno, it sounds like what they use to wash their damn, dirty
dishes; it's tough on food particles but gentle on their stinkin' paws. But I
like that it reminds me of the "Dawn of Man" opening sequence from "2001: A
Space Odyssey" ("Rise" director Rupert Wyatt is a big Kubrick fan). In 1968 POTA
and "2001" came out a couple months apart and will always be connected in my
mind. So for that reason I will tip my hat to this new title.

Jeff
It’s hard for me to get excited
about a sequel.
The name however is exciting and I think
it works.
That’s coming from a guy who has
been searching for POTA story titles that sound good since 1973 or so!
But then I was looking for ORIGINAL titles….
Michael
PS I used to call Planet “The”
until my dad corrected me. “Do you prefer Beneath or THE?”
