Not as common as the others but not that hard to find on ebay either (and much cheaper than the auction I'm referencing here).

Yeah, I got red gorilla first. It's my favorite
of the lot. It also cameos in the documentary "The Journey of Man" (at the
7:40 mark):
Though my real favorite is the mock up of Zira
they did when designing the figure. I found that in a shop for $5, they thought
it was just a knockoff but it's the actual prototype of the Hasbro
Zira.

I can't send photos (I'm still in the 20th
Century). But it's the Hasbro Zira, it looks the same except for the colors. The
upper garment is black instead of green. The under garment is pink instead of
brown and it has writing on it ("Lift" and "16p"; she also has "16p" written on
her face). The collar thing is darker brown and the glyphs are lighter. She
doesn't have the sprayed down hair, the hair is softer. And the face is
unpainted.

Yeah, my local collectibles shop. I
realized what it was and said, "What the...?" (well, maybe I didn't say, "What
the...?"). How they got it I don't know. Obviously they didn't know what it
was.
Also the plastic used was yellowish, not pink
like the final version.

The current ongoing POTA comic continuity began
in Ape-ril 2011 and is scheduled to end in August. Then a new team (the creators
of the fan favorite "Betrayal" and "Exile" POTA mini series) will start a new
storyline in September. Damian Couceiro is doing the artwork (he did the "Rise"

OK, today is the 40th anniversary of "Conquest".
Ricardo Montalban played Armando, of course. But I also knew that Ricardo's
iconic role as Khan in "Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan" came out 30 years ago
this summer. Were their anniversaries the same day? Naw, but it was the same
month. "Star Trek 2" came out June 4rth, 1982.
Is "Star Trek 2" the best "Star Trek"
movie? I think so. Is Khan Montalban's most iconic role? I think so. But it's
interesting about his two classic sci-fi roles. In both cases he had two
performances (Armando in "Escape" and "Conquest", Khan in the "Space Seed" ep of
"Star Trek" and "Star Trek 2"). In both cases I think he gave the better
performance in the latter ones (but wow, were all performances terrific). In the
case of POTA, he played a man of peace in a series that was about war (more or
less). For "Star Trek", where humanity had found a way to live peacefully, he
was the face of war.
I would say Khan in "Star Trek 2" is his most
iconic role, followed by... I dunno. He rocked in his two POTA movies but
there's also Mr. Rourke of "Fantasy Island" and the grandpa in the "Spy Kids"
movies (which introduced him to a new generation). So where does Armando fit in
an incredible career? <.html <.html

Fox has scheduled their sequel "Dawn of the POTA"
for 5/23/14. It's still damn, dirty early but what competish could it be
facing? So far scheduled for the merry month of May is the sequel to the as yet
unveiled "Amazing Spiderman" on 5/2/14. Paramount has just announced they are
moving their "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot to May 16 2014, where it will
square off against an unnamed Marvel movie ("Ant Man"?). On 5/23, "Dawn"
takes on Adam Sandler in "Pixels", a kind of "Roger Rabbit" for famous video
game characters. And on May 30th Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" will be unveiled.
OK, OK, not so bad. "Dawn" is gonna make them
wish they were never born, er, filmed. Will the apes rule the summer? So
far the only other titles are "Capt. America 2" and Spielberg's sci-fi
"Robopocalypse" in April (when "Dawn" should've been scheduled so it could be
Ape-ril) and the sequels to "X-Men: First Class" and "Transformers" in July.
"Rise" whupped "X-Men" and "Capt. America" but "Transformers" is the one to beat
based on past performance. Everything else is an unknown quantity. No "Harry
Potter"s or "Pirates" or Batmans that summer. But there's still a whole lot of
scheduling and shifting to be done, so we'll see. Less than two years to
go.

Due to my relationship with Natalie Trundy I
wound up with a lot of Arthur Jacobs stuff, including clippings compiled by his
staff. There's been plenty written about his POTA movies but I was curious about
some of his sci-fi projects that got away. He was planning a faithful version of
the novel that started science fiction, Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"
(eventually made in the '90's by Kenneth Branagh, with music by Patrick "Rise of
the POTA" Doyle). He was the first producer to pursue a movie version of the
book "Dune". And what sounds like his primo project, "Journey of the Oceanauts",
was a hard sell along the lines of his original POTA.
I decided it was time to go through this stuff.
But better yet, maybe WE should go through this stuff. I'll try to daily post
something (I'll have to describe since I can't scan) and in about 20 years we'll
get through it. Here's the first piece:
It's a story from reporter Dick Kleiner for the
Newspaper Enterprise Association/New York-Cleveland. There's no date but it
looks like it came out with "Escape".
"Movie Producer Goes Ape" by Dick Kleiner
(includes a picture of Jacobs)
HOLLYWOOD - (NEA) - Producers are men who solve
problems, but Arthur P. Jacobs has one now which is a real brain-buster. Where
can he put a monkey in a film set underwater? This requires some explanation.
Jacobs has come to regard the presence of a monkey in his movies as a lucky
talisman, much as Alfred Hitchcock always sticks himself in his movies
somewhere.
It began with his first film, "What A Way To Go",
in which an ape helped Paul Newman paint pictures. Then came "Doctor Dolittle",
where Rex Harrison had a monkey buddy. "Planet of the Apes" followed and that
was all-monkey. After that, he found spots for chimps in "The Chairman" and
"Goodbye, Mr. Chips", and then came two more "Planet of the Apes" pictures -
"Beneath the POTA" and the new one, "Escape From the POTA", which is a delight.
Coming up is a fourth in the series, "Conquest of the POTA".
And then will come Jacobs' biggest film, "Journey
of the Oceanauts". This is the story of four men walking across the Pacific,
underwater, in the 1990's from Los Angeles to Japan. Now, where can he put that
monkey? Jacobs has been working on "Oceanauts" for a couple of years already. He
showed me some of the 1,100 drawings he has had made, drawings which show each
scene and how the effects can be achieved. He says the possibility that men will
be able to walk along the ocean floor by the 1990's is scientifically sound. By
then, there will be a way of operating on a man, giving him a form of artificial
gills. He says that already such surgery has been performed on rabbits who have
survived happily underwater for as long as six months.
Before that film is shot, however, the fourth of
the "Apes" movies will come along. There seems to be no end in sight for this
hugely successful series. Jacobs thought the second one would be the last and
the apes' planet blew up at the end of that one and everybody was killed. But
the world wanted more, so Jacobs figured out a way to do the one in current
release. The fourth will be relatively easy, and if you've seen "Escape From the
POTA" you can pretty well figure out what "Conquest of the POTA" will be about.
After that - "If that's the last", Jacobs says - there will be a TV show based
on the Apes plot. He says they have been after him to do a series since the
original film came out, but he won't do it until the feature films have run
their course. He'll be happy meanwhile if anybody can tell him where to put
that monkey in the underwater picture. He's losing sleep over it.

Wow. There's quite a bit to absorb from that one article. I was also surprised to hear that up to that point there was a monkey in each of his previous movies (can anyone confirm that?).
When it comes to Frankenstein, there was a pretty faithful made for TV adaptation in the mid seventies. "Frankenstein: The True Story" was an extended movie shown over 2 night with Micheal Sarazzin as the
creature and an all star cast with lavish sets and high production values. It would be surprising that Jacobs did not know about this production if he was at all close to Hollywood. I wonder if he was marginally
involved. Nothing in IMDB seems to indicate so: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070074/
Never even heard of "Journey of the Oceanauts" much less the fact that he had already gone to the trouble to panelling out the scenes. x But if if he did have all the scenes mapped out like that, there must
have been a script to go along. It is surprising to hear that Jacobs believed we were even close to having 'artificial gills' and that we would soon be able to walk under the ocean like that. And what the hell
was that about bunnies being surgically altered to live under water for six months!
I hope to see more from the Jacobs File collection, but you really have to get a scanner. You'll be transcribing way to much.
Thanks for posting this Jeff.

Thanks for this Jeff, sounds like there could be some stuff in there that I'd be really interested in. I've also seen this movie referred to as 'Voyage of the Oceanauts'. A
1970 issue of Box Office Magazine (PDF link below) described it as "an odyssey of manned undersea exploration in the year 1990", scheduled to enter production in 1971 with a Mayo Simon (Marooned) screenplay
based on the novel by Louis Wolfe, Frank Capra Jr. as associate producer, Tony Masters (2001: A Space Odyssey) as production designer and Lamar Boren (Thunderball) as director of cinematography.

showed me some of the 1,100 drawings he has had made, drawings which show each
scene and how the effects can be achieved.

I celebrated the 40th anniversary of "Conquest of
the POTA" on Friday by visiting Century City. I ate at Subway to honor the
mutants but I didn't buy anything from Banana Republic or Aldo. Was I in a rush
to see the sites of the ape revolution? No, let's just say I crossed that bridge
when I came to it. Then I went to see the new doc
"Paul Williams Still Alive" at the Nuart with a q & a with the man, the ape,
the legend himself, and his director. No, Paul wasn't in "Conquest" but he knew
Caesar, Lisa and Kolp personally.
The movie is a lot of fun and is very
entertainingly told, keeping the old clips coming but mostly showing Paul's life
today (concert tours, celebrity gold tournies, riding in cars). It's a very
unassuming film, no big drama about being a celebrity and his substance abuse
adventures. It's not TMZ. I guess I could catagorize it as comedic, in both it's
style and subject. It's very moving in spots but the word for this is "fun",
especially for those who have a hazy memory of the '70's as the "Me, Paul
Williams" Decade.
OK, let's get down to brass tacks. There's only
about a two second clip from "Battle", but they didn't show this:
However, they did show this clip seen at the end
of the trailer:
It's unlikely but maybe the DVD will have the full
interview as an extra. There's no mention of "Battle", but for fans of Williams
(and you certainly would be if you met him in person) or for people who want to
know more about the man behind the ape Virgil, this doc is recommended. It's a
good time.
Then there was the q & a, which was short
(I'm not going to say it) so he could give out autographed posters of the movie
and meet the folks. That's just the way he rolls, he's a people person and a
great guy. There's a moment in the film where he and the director are watching a
clip of him guest hosting "The Merv Griffin Show" in the '80's and he hated the
person he had become, forbidding the director to use that clip. In the q & a
he said he later agreed to show it because it was important to show what he felt
was his lowest moment. It was also his idea that the director should become part
of the film because he felt pretending there were no cameras would be a lie and
he wanted to be truthful.
Someone mentioned "Bugsy Malone" (which he did
the songs for) and he said the stage musical version is very successful in the
U.K., it's performed a lot, it's as big as "Grease" is in the U.S. (that's
big!). There are also plans for a remake of his cult film "The Phantom of the
Paradise" using the same songs which he wrote (John Chambers did the makeup).
And it's obvious from the movie and from the audience at the screening that he's
as big as he ever was (sorry) to his fans. Paul rocks!
Here's an interview of him and his director (his
director and he?) from "Aint It Cool". They have another interview for next week
wherein he reportedly talks about his "Apes" work so keep the eyes peeled like a
banana.

It's not a comic it's a 4 story anthology and I provide 3 illustrations for each story.
Not sure when it will be ready but I know it won't be until after I finish the pictures as they are the final thing that needs completing! So far I've only turned in the first 3 finished illo's and have
penciled 2 of the second story's pictures, so still a while to go yet.

Marvel's super team movie "The Avengers" has
become a global movie sensation this summer, racking up $ 1 BILLION, 439 MILLION
and change worldwide so far (and it won't even open in Japan until August).
Marvel has a "secret" movie scheded for May 16,
2014, the weekend before "Dawn of the POTA" is released. The announcement of
what it is will be at Comic Con. BUT word on the street is that it will be
"Guardians of the Galaxy", an alien super team. SUPER TEAM!
We're ruined! How is POTA supposed to stand up to
that? As Paul (Virgil) Williams wrote, "We've only just begun" and now it's
over! And one of the Guardians is named Nova. Bitter irony!!
Well, it was fun while it
lasted. <.html <.html

There's no word on that. Since there's an extra
word in the title (POTA: Cataclysm") it might mean this is a second monthly
comic. The other comic might continue as POTA proper. If that's the case the
comics must be doing pretty well.

Should the titles "Rise of the POTA" and it's
sequel "Dawn of the POTA" be reversed? Obviously it's too late to do anything
but the first movie seems more like a "dawn"; the apes are arriving on the
scene. The sequel will be more of a "rise" as the apes take their place at the
top. Plus, Paul Dehn's original title for "Battle" was "Rise of the POTA" (per
Eric Greene in the "Battle" blu-ray doc) and this sequel will probably tread the
same issues as "Battle" (how do the apes treat their former superiors?).
Would've been cool to use Dehn's original title (though they did anyway). So I
think it would've been better if the titles had been switched. But what's in a
name? <.html <.html

POTA2001 Wahlly has shown he has staying power as a movie star and is a heck of
a producer, too. He even came clean and admitted POTA2001 wasn't all it could
have been:
What's next for him? Getting his high school
diploma. No, really. Good for him. Kind of an interesting contrast with the
other recent POTA star James Franco, who has how many college degrees? But then,
Franco played a scientist and Wahlberg played a dude who chased his monkey
across time and space. <.html <.html

Watched this doc last night. Just a terrific
film. Complain all you want about POTA2001 but it was thanks to it's development
that we got "Behind" and it's just in time interviews with many who are no
longer with us. Eric Greene is a lucky dog to have been a part of it, but I
think he does a good job of providing context.
Fox is going to need some extras to resell the original
films if the current films take off. As it happened, I got a good deal on the
"Full Disclosure" blu-ray edition of "Apocalypse Now" this weekend. It includes
an HD version of the 1990 doc "Hearts of Darkness", which looks great. I would
love to see "Behind" get this treatment. Fox has gone to the "Behind" well so
many times that I think it's time. There's reportedly a newly restored version
of POTA1968 that hasn't been released yet. If they released it in 2014 with an
HD version of "Behind" I would be a happy camper.
But we've also got the 50th anniversary of the
original in 6 years (or the 50th anniversary of the book next year if Fox cares
to sellabrate it). Most of the people who participated in "Behind" are gone but
their images and their words live on (not unlike Caesar's parents). A special
edition of "Behind" was released with 2 hours of the roddy interview. Obviously
there are plenty of unmined interviews for "Behind" that could be used in future
releases. Two hours of Kim Hunter? Heston? Montalban? Joe Russo has plenty of
audio stuff from his "Revisited" book that could be incorporated. There's plenty
of stuff to work with despite the influence of Father Time. The idea makes me
drool (sorry, this is embarrassing; anyone have a Kleenex?). Let's rock,
Fox! <.html <.html

*** It predates "pota2001" by three years (before it was a done deal as far
as being made,) so I'd think the main reason for BEHIND was to help
promote/tie in with the original APES 30th anniversary, especially being tied in

*** I agree with this, and in addition to being useful for any future film
releases, there could be some unused interview footage that could be used if
they'd ever decide to do another release of the TV series (James Naughton's

Some very smart people are expected to
make a big announcement Wednesday at the Large Hadron Collider, the $10 billion
largest atom smasher in the world. Speculation is that they have found the
elusive Higgs' boson, the particle that gives us mass. Dieters beware. And yes,
Mr. Higgs has been invited so they're probably serious.
Does this have anything to do with apes with
guns? Well, without science where would POTA be? The work of Darwin, the work of
astronomers, the work of Einstein - without them POTA wouldn't have nearly the
power it has as a "what if". That's why it's called SCIENCE fiction. Pierre
Boulle knew his science. Have you hugged a scientist today?
They've been searching for this damned thing
since 1964, the missing piece of what is called "the standard model". Could be a
watershed moment in physics. Just sayin'.

they were going to revive it with a new movie. They had been hot for it since
Oliver Stone in 1993. They didn't do a 25th anniversary celebration, or a 20th.
"Behind" came out before Burton was even involved with POTA but the new flick
had been in development. And also the public interest in POTA had grown with the
new movie in development. In fact their golden boy James Cameron (fresh off
"Titanic") was developing it when the "Behind"/30th anniversary stuff
hit.
I can't say for sure "Behind" wouldn't have
happened if there was no new movie but it seemed Fox was high on POTA at the
time. They wanted to bring it back and "Behind" was a good way to remind people
about it.

Earlier I brought up that "Dawn of the POTA" was
screwed because it was going up against a Marvel super hero team (a la "The
Avengers", which tore the box office a new one this summer). I was kidding, of
course. A good POTA movie can take on all comers (if it's good). Anyway, it's a
moot point since Marvel has moved their "untitled" secret project to August,
long after "Dawn" has broken (unless "Dawn" is moved). What exactly Marvel has
cooking for Summer 2014 won't be officially revealed until Comic-Con but the
assumed title is "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Should the titles "Rise of the POTA" and it's sequel "Dawn of the POTA" be reversed? Obviously it's too late to do anything but the first movie seems more like a
"dawn"; the apes are arriving on the scene. The sequel will be more of a "rise" as the apes take their place at the top. Plus, Paul Dehn's original title for "Battle" was "Rise of
the POTA" (per Eric Greene in the "Battle" blu-ray doc) and this sequel will probably tread the same issues as "Battle" (how do the apes treat their former superiors?). Would've been cool to
use Dehn's original title (though they did anyway). So I think it would've been better if the titles had been switched. But what's in a name? <.html

Here's an interview by the creator of the famed
"Ain't It Cool" website with the maker of an independent film about sci-fi in
the '70's. The movie is called "5-25-77", referring to the release date of "Star
Wars" when science fiction theoretically became cool to Joe Public (kind of like
POTA is now with "Rise"). In the clips for the film watch for "Requiem For the
POTA" and also the director mentions POTA and there's two of those great Mondo
POTA posters in the background during the interview. Ain't it cool?

Just attempted to post this and got a response that it could not be approved because it seems a biy "spammy". Graham - could you please attempt?
Regarding the Forbidden Zine (it's Zine not zone, if you look closely!:)) - we are slowly getting together the net issue but Neil T Foster is busy with other (PAYING!) projects right now and the main comic story is
incomplete. Next time we'll offer options for black and white issues...the full colour issue cost over 20 bucks each and we lost a lot of money. We are also getting our share of wonderful POTA comics these days
from the BOOM! mini series (not the main story - it confuses the look of Burton's apes!) and the main series is going classic soon so there's no real void needing to be filled. To stay in touch I suggest you
join the POTADG (Planet of the Apes Discussion Group) http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/
which is a bit slow right now (more talk currently at http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pota/)

Will James Franco and Freida Pinto return for
"Dawn of the POTA"? In these penny-pinching times I'd doubt it because they'd
probably have to get a pay bump since they were in the last successful one. And
Fox has reportedly already given Andy Serkis a healthy raise. From a studio
standpoint it would probably make more sense to start over with fresh (and cheap
humans). To many in the audience the humans weren't memorable
anyway.
Franco might not even be interested in
returning but Freida is. However, she sez, "I heard they were going to make a
sequel, but I can't confirm it. I haven't been asked by the studio to do another
one. I know that everyone was excited because the first film is a different take
on "Apes". I hope the franchise does take off again".
Currently the script is still being figured out
but I think if they wanted Franco and Pinto back they would lock them down
before writing them into the script. I would enjoy the continuity of their
returning but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. The connection of
Caesar to them might add to the story instead of just generic humans. Building
on the relationships of past movies is one of the good things about movie
franchises, seeing characters return and grow years later (such as Armando in
"Conquest"). But Fox knows which side it's "Apes" is buttered on and
that would be the simian species. <.html <.html

I would think the producers set up any sort of Rise sequal to take place many hundreds or thousands of years into the future - as the story of the "lost" spacecraft to Mars in Rise foreshadowed.
Patrick - It might be interesting to link Rise with the Return to the POTA cartoon series. There are some possibilities.

No, they said Caesar will be in it, so it's

probably have to get a pay bump since they were in the last successful one. And
Fox has reportedly already given Andy Serkis a healthy raise.

Darryl Gregory has tweeted that his current run on
POTA comics will end on # 16 and his storyline will wrap up with a series of
specials. No word on whether the POTA title will be picked up by new writers and
artists or if "POTA: Cataclysm" will be the sole Ape monthly. There will be a
BOOM! POTA panel at Comic-Con next weekend that should provide details. Also,
"POTA: Cataclysm" creators Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko ("Betrayal",
"Exile" POTA miniseries) will be at Vancouver Comic-Con July 8th (tomorrow) for
those in the area who are interested. <.html <.html

Same here at my end Michael, the only way to get it through was to take out the web addresses of the DG and Hunter's site.
Steve is a "friend" on Face book so you could over hook up there.

*** I can't say this will bother me... I tried to get behind it and tried
to find things in it to like, but they just weren't there... What got me from
the start is how they kept saying that it was/is supposed to be part of the
original post BATTLE continuity when everything pointed in a different
direction... It had about as much connection to the original films as TERROR
did: In short the use of the POTA name and a few talking apes and thet's where
the real similarities ended... ***

*** Just based on the teaser art alone, I have higher expectations for
"POTA: Cataclysm" then I did for the other monthly comic (which is ending
soon)... Hopefully it lives up to everyone's expectations... ***

Here's some covers for the 2nd issue of BOOM!'s
"POTA: Cataclysm". This is the second issue that has a cover depicting the
destruction of the moon. I hope that's not part of the story (the moon being
destroyed because there's "no moon"). There's no moon because of the cloud cover
at night. The moon literally being destroyed would be ridiculous.

However, it would be intelligent if it
happened in RISE, right Jeff? ;)

Let's see.... There are two covers and on both of them, the moon is being blown to smithereens. I'm gonna take a big leap here and predict that the moon will be blown up in issue two.
Sorry Jeff.

There's a cover for issue # 1 that also shows the
moon being destroyed. Could that be the "cataclysm" of the title? Maybe it's
just a mutant illusion? : o
I'd prefer apes in zeppelins.

.htmlI agree with you on this... I never bought the idea of there literally
being no moon... As you said, it could be because of cloud cover at night and/or
another reason the moon's not visible could be because of it being new
moon...

.htmlIf that's the case, and that's part of the title's "cataclysm", I hope it's
at least caused by some natural catastrophe and not some ape or man made
device... It'd just seem more feasible that way...

This is a sad day for POTA fans. Richard Zanuck
has died. He's the studio exec who greenlighted the original POTA when no one
else would. And he produced POTA2001, the start of a long relationship with Tim
Burton. He was the husband of Linda Harrison and probably the reason she played
Nova. Beyond that, he produced "Jaws", one of my favorite movies.
I will say he seemed to have a lot of ego during
the time of POTA2001. He acted like he made it possible and downplayed Arthur
Jacobs' almost twisting his arm to make it. POTA2001 showed he didn't really
"get it". But that's not what we're here to dwell on. Nobody "got it" in the
mid-'60's but Zanuck took a chance on POTA. He's also credited with the end of
"Beneath". There's no two ways about it, Richard Zanuck and POTA are linked
forever. And whatever the history, he seemed like a good guy who loved movies
and did his part to bring them to us.
