Yesterday was the POTA comics panel at Comic-Con
(Andy Serkis was also in town for the "Hobbit" panel and it would've been fun if
he'd dropped in). So far no report has popped up. Did anyone bring up the MIA
"Terror on the POTA", the moon controversy or a "Rise" adaptation?
Dunno.
Meanwhile, here's a "making of" for one of those
moon covers, courtesy of artist Joe Quinones:

It's Comic-Con weekend and thus a perfect time to
celebrate the fans, those who have more than a passing interest in something pop
culture. There's Trekkies/Trekkers, of course, and lots of fans of "Star Wars"
"Lord of the Rings", "Twilight", what have you. Believe it or not, there's even
fans of POTA, who still have yet to fall in line under a cutesy name ("Apers"?).
Sometimes being a fan can be a lonely existence, questioned by family and
friends. But the next time you look at your POTA collection and lament, "Nobody
understands me", realize it could be worse.
Meet the "bronies", fans (often adult male)
of "My Little Pony", specifically the TV show "Friendship Is Magic". They're
loud, they're proud and if you don't want the "My Little Pony" figure in your
Happy Meal, they'll take it. If Ape fans could get it together like this, we
might have something.

It's a dark day for movies. R.I.P. to the movie
fans who lost their lives last night in Colorado.
Meanwhile, it looks like POTA and "Jurassic
Park" might go for Round 2 in 2014. The "Jurassic" producer sez they are
hoping to put a new dinosaur epic in theaters in two years, which would be 2014
(presumably summer, also earmarked for "Dawn of the POTA"). And it looks like
"Jurassic" and "Apes" will even share the same writers.
POTA2001 and "Jurassic Park 3" came out a week apart in
July 2001 and it was almost a photo finish at the box office. "Jurassic" made
$369 million around the world and POTA $362 million. <.html <.html

Subject: POTA comics today
It's a big day for BOOM!'s POTA comics: Their POTA
# 16 (reportedly the last monthly for that title before "POTA: Cataclysm" takes
it's place) and "Exile on the POTA" # 4 (the end of that miniseries before it's
authors start their monthly "Cataclysm").
Both hit the racks
today. <.html <.html

"Rise of the POTA" was up for 5 Saturn Awards and
won 3: Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor - Andy Serkis, and Best
FX.
Of the other "Rise" catagories, Best
Director went to J.J. Abrams for "Super 8" and Best Script went to "Take
Shelter".
Not a bad showing; "Rise" and "Super 8"
were the film leaders with 3 wins each. Let's see if someone got a "Dawn of the
POTA" update from the gang.

Subject: POTA at the Olympics opening ceremony
At the opening ceremony in London they did a big
segment on modern teen dating and when our two star teens kissed, they did a
montage of kissing scenes, including Taylor and Zira. The astounding opening
ceremony was directed by Danny Boyle, who directed James Franco to an Oscar nom
and also "Slumdog Millionaire", which put Freida Pinto on the map.
They also showed a commercial for an upcoming TV
show called "Animal Practice", which features a monkey named Rizzo. They wanted
to call him Dr. Zauis but Fox nixed the idea. If it was a hit it might have been
good publicity. <.html <.html

The original novel is a very unexciting read for me & this guys narration is not helping. I feel okay passing on this.

Though it looked like "Dawn of the POTA" was
going to get a break in Summer 2014, that doesn't seem to be the case
anymore. While there's no "Harry Potter" or "Pirates of the Caribbean" this
time, it's already been said they are aiming a new "Jurassic Park" for that time
frame. And now comes word that "The Hobbit" (the highly anticipated "Lord of the
Rings" prequel) will be made into a trilogy and the finale will arrive Summer
2014. This will probably crush the competish like the "Harry Potter" finale did.
And there's also plans for another Michael Bay "Transformers", another billion $
franchise, for that time frame.
Will POTA have the alright stuff? Pray, my
children!

Time/Life is releasing a huge 19 disc collection
of the classic "Carol Burnett Show", featuring full episodes including 4 with
Roddy (McDowell, duh) as guest. There's 3/16/74 (presumably the POTA episode,
which includes a short film called "Roddy in the Makeup Chair for POTA"),
3/15/75, 11/1/75 and 10/30/76. You'll be glad you and Roddy have this time
together, just to share a laugh or sing a song. But it'll seem you just got
started, and before you know it, comes the time you have to say goodbye. Just
sayin'.

Okay.
I've read the Annual & even went through my saved copies of the comics
you've shared with us looking for similarities but I'm not sure
what your getting at. The 4th story is the one with the monk?

Maybe a lot of people didn't get the
annual.
The only similarity I see is the "Battle"
Lawgiver's ideas being suppressed. Two people could have that idea.
If it bothers you, find out if Gabriel Hardman
has ever had an "Ape Chronicles" subscription or ordered that
issue.

I was hoping that my copy would have arrived by now but I'm still waiting for it so can't tell how close it is, if at all.
I have heard through the 'Apevine' that there are more alleged similarities than just that though.

.html
.html
So, the "Dawn of the POTA" script is still a work
in progress and who knows where it will land. Will James Franco, Frieda Pinto or
Brian Cox return? I dunno, but Fox seemed quick to lock down Andy Serkis, and
for a terrific salary. So I don't hold out much hope for the human characters,
who would presumably get a pay raise for returning to a successful franchise.
The human characters weren't exactly celebrated from "Rise". The only actor to
say anything was Frieda Pinto, who said she hadn't heard anything but would love
to return.
I'll just say I would love to see the original
actors return and expand on their characters. But I could see where budget would
suggest casting new human characters, and that's where I'm here to help. As we
know, there were many references in "Rise" to the original POTA movies, and they
rubbed some fans the wrong way. So how about some casting that I think POTA fans
would enjoy and which would be more subtle than movie quotes?
Jackie Earle Haley: He, of course played Kraik in
"The Legacy" episode of the POTA TV show. I would love to see him return to the
POTA universe 40 years later. This is not pie in the sky. He's had an incredible
time the last few years, getting an Oscar nomination, working for directors like
Scorsese, Spielberg and, yes, Burton. Come on, his recent casting is for the
"Robocop" remake. It's time for Jackie to come home. If it's possible, he should
return to the POTA.
Katee Sackhoff: Who? She played Kara "Starbuck"
Thrace in the recent "Battlestar Galactica". I LOVE that series and have it on
blu-ray. But that's not what I'm talking about. The main creative force on that
series (at least from the writing) was Ronald D. Moore, who after a decade
working on "Star Trek" episodes, was ready for the anti-"Trek". Of course, in
the '60's, POTA was the anti-Trek. As it turns out, Moore is a big POTA fan and
sprinkled POTA refs in his "Battlestar". But mainly, in the episode "Sometimes A
Great Notion", "Starbuck" is referred to as the "Harbinger of Death", a direct
POTA reference when she discovers >CENSORED!< . And when she's looking for
her destiny in the same episode, she's told, "You may not like what you find".
So, come on! If the "Harbinger of Death" has no place in the new POTA movies,
then there is no God. Did I say that?
Both of those are not just stunt casting. I have
been blown away by their acting and I'm sure if they did a role in "Dawn of the
POTA" they would rock. Besides that, I think it would be fun if they were cast.
So those are my ideas. It would be interesting to hear yours (let's be
realistic; no Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis).

It depends what sort of film you think it will be Jeff. Presumably you're just talking about the human characters, who might have only a limited role in the movie. But I'd like to
see Frieda Pinto return with more to do, but that might not be for altogether artistic reasons (in fact, why not bring in Kate Beckinsale to spank those naughty monkeys?). And I suppose it would make sense to bring back
Franco even though he wasn't a very likeable character.
It would be nice to see some twists, like Pinto and Cox having to pool their knowledge of simians in the struggle for human survival, for example. Or a post-apocalyptic cult of mentally and physically damaged human
plague survivors who believe the apes have been sent by God to purify humanity (how about Tilda Swinton as their leader?) - not necessarily anything to do with the Beneath mutants (although come to think of it, if the
virus increases the mental faculties of the apes, mightn't it do the same to the survivng humans, making them telepathic?). And there should be a militaristic human resistance group, but preferably not led by some
muscle-bound action hero type actor. I'd like it to be an epic film, with lots of factions and different moralities represented.

True, it's anyone's guess what the sequel is
going to be. The director's stated idea was that the humans are underground and
that the story is mostly ape on ape (he described it as "Full Metal Jacket").
But the recent addition of the "Contagion" screenwriter suggests they might get
more into the humans and the virus (or maybe not). The human characters in
"Rise" did not get the best reviews and if I was the director I would probably
take that as a challenge and work extra hard on the humans.
But right now the fun is casting our own version
and having our own story ideas before cold, hard reality hits
us.

I find it hard to get excited Jeff.
I liked the new movie, didn’t hate
it but don’t love it. Sorta like a fireworks display where it was
raining.
Anyway, that said, I’d like to see
an intelligent movie. Some real consideration given to the evolution and
revolution and development of apes and humans doing what they do best –
fighting (or a good reason why they don’t).
I like your picks but it would take a
devout fan to recognize the inclusion of Kraik. How many fans will
actually get this?
I want to see more actors LIKE Eastwood
and Willis – what about Bill Murray? His inclusion would mean the
script essentially MUST be good. Kevin Spacey comes to mind. No
more teeny boppers….just to prove to me it’s not another attempt to

ideas for "Dawn of the POTA"
It depends what sort of film you think it will be
Jeff. Presumably you're just talking about the human characters, who might have
only a limited role in the movie. But I'd like to see Frieda Pinto return with
more to do, but that might not be for altogether artistic reasons (in fact, why
not bring in Kate Beckinsale to spank those naughty monkeys?). And I suppose it
would make sense to bring back Franco even though he wasn't a very likeable
character.
It would be nice to see some twists, like Pinto and Cox having to pool their
knowledge of simians in the struggle for human survival, for example. Or a
post-apocalyptic cult of mentally and physically damaged human plague survivors
who believe the apes have been sent by God to purify humanity (how about Tilda Swinton
as their leader?) - not necessarily anything to do with the Beneath mutants
(although come to think of it, if the virus increases the mental faculties of
the apes, mightn't it do the same to the survivng humans, making them
telepathic?). And there should be a militaristic human resistance group, but
preferably not led by some muscle-bound action hero type actor. I'd like it to
be an epic film, with lots of factions and different moralities represented.

and who knows where it will land. Will James Franco, Frieda Pinto or Brian Cox
return? I dunno, but Fox seemed quick to lock down Andy Serkis, and for a
terrific salary. So I don't hold out much hope for the human characters, who
would presumably get a pay raise for returning to a successful franchise. The
human characters weren't exactly celebrated from "Rise". The only
actor to say anything was Frieda Pinto, who said she hadn't heard anything but
would love to return.
> I'll just say I would love to see the original actors return and expand on
their characters. But I could see where budget would suggest casting new human
characters, and that's where I'm here to help. As we know, there were many
references in "Rise" to the original POTA movies, and they rubbed
some fans the wrong way. So how about some casting that I think POTA fans would
enjoy and which would be more subtle than movie quotes?
>
> Jackie Earle Haley: He, of course played Kraik in "The Legacy"
episode of the POTA TV show. I would love to see him return to the POTA
universe 40 years later. This is not pie in the sky. He's had an incredible
time the last few years, getting an Oscar nomination, working for directors
like Scorsese, Spielberg and, yes, Burton .
Come on, his recent casting is for the "Robocop" remake. It's time
for Jackie to come home. If it's possible, he should return to the POTA.
>
> Katee Sackhoff: Who? She played Kara "Starbuck"
w:st="on"> Thrace in the
recent "Battlestar Galactica". I LOVE that series and have it on
blu-ray. But that's not what I'm talking about. The main creative force on that
series (at least from the writing) was Ronald D. Moore, who after a decade
working on "Star Trek" episodes, was ready for the
anti-"Trek". Of course, in the '60's, POTA was the anti-Trek. As it
turns out, Moore
is a big POTA fan and sprinkled POTA refs in his "Battlestar". But
mainly, in the episode "Sometimes A Great Notion",
"Starbuck" is referred to as the "Harbinger of Death", a
direct POTA reference when she discovers >CENSORED!< . And when she's
looking for her destiny in the same episode, she's told, "You may not like
what you find". So, come on! If the "Harbinger of Death" has no
place in the new POTA movies, then there is no God. Did I say that?
>
> Both of those are not just stunt casting. I have been blown away by their
acting and I'm sure if they did a role in "Dawn of the POTA" they
would rock. Besides that, I think it would be fun if they were cast. So those
are my ideas. It would be interesting to hear yours (let's be realistic; no
Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis).

Last Saturday, Jane Goodall spoke about Tarzan at
the annual Edgar Rice Burroughs celebration (called a Dum-Dum, after the ritual
Tarzan's apes attend). 2012 is the 100th anniversary of Burrough's two most
famous creations: "John Carter of Mars", first published in February 1912 (the
same month Pierre Boulle was born); and "Tarzan of the Apes" (October 1912).
Between the two of them there's gotta be some POTA DNA somewhere. "John Carter"
was perhaps the granddaddy of the "space opera". "Tarzan" was an early
examination of the relationship between Man and Ape (Eric Greene considers it
POTA in reverse).
Goodall has a full plate and it's rare for her to
talk about fictional characters. But Tarzan is what inspired her to go to Africa
in the first place and shows the importance of fiction in our lives. As a kid
she was also a fan of the "Dr. Dolittle" books. Of course, Arthur Jacobs brought
that to cinemas at the same time as POTA.

both of these scrolls are sympathetic towards humans, and both are destroyed by fire in order to conceal the truth. I see no reason why someone as talented as Gabriel Hardman would need to copy another person's work

I've asked this before and never got an answer.
In "Rise", when Buck (the helicopter-jumping gorilla) is dying, it seems like he
"deflates" into a more POTA gorilla until the last shot where Caesar closes his
eyes. Is it just me or does anyone else see that? I could easily presume it was
a filmmaker decision, just as they made Caesar look semi- original POTA.
@&^@%^ it! I know what I see. I don't need anyone to justify it. It's a
fact, Landon. I guess it would be Caesar having a vision or too much to
drink. But I think it rocks.
So nobody wants to answer, huh? That's OK, I love
a tough crowd. I'll just wait here until someone concurs or challenges my
observation. I can wait.
(hums to himself) Dum de dum dum de dum de dum.
Still won't crack, eh? So, what's up with that sequel? It's been awfully quiet.
Are they hunting wabbits?
What da ya think, will James Franco be back? I
don't think so, he's a star salary they can do without. Even though his only hit
as a headliner is "Rise". Hollywood doesn't work on logic. Except the logic that

They do happen Neil.
It certainly is worth consideration
though, being SUCH a coincidence!
I liked your art better. We had 7 days to
get 3 pages together remember?
It was written in my lounge room in 10 minutes – by a rookie – no team
to brainstorm with.
I’m quite proud of it.
Anyway, I think we might start a Facebook
Page. The Forbidden Zone, or The Forbidden Zine. Would anyone like to see the
new 5 page back-story to BEGINS?

Finally received my copy and have now read the story.
I agree with everything mentioned by Neil below and also find it odd that a
talent like Gabriel Hardman would copy someone's work. Therefore I can only
come to the conclusion that it's a coincidence. They do happen. Gabriel's story
and art are much better than what we came up with though anyway.

Subject: "Battle" the inspiration for "Argo" plan?
Like I said in a previous post, yesterday at the
Telluride Film Festival the movie "Argo" was sneaked. It's about Hollywood
trying to free the Iranian hostages in 1979 and John Goodman plays John
Chambers. According to this review, the idea for the plan was hatched while
watching "Battle for the POTA" (at least in the movie; I don't know if that was
actually the case). That makes two movies this year that "Battle" gets a cameo
in (the other being the Paul Williams doc "Still Alive"). "Battle" has always
been the poor stepchild of the POTA movies but maybe it's time has come.

This weekend is DragonCon in Atlanta and it was
groovy to see two of my sci-fi faves back to back marching in the parade,
"Battlestar Galactica" (21st Century edition) and POTA. So say we
all!

I thought he was going to make it after his heart
attack back on July 13th, but the man who played Attar (and got an Oscar nom for
"The Green Mile") is dead. Say what you will about POTA2001, but Duncan was a
POTA fan and was thrilled to get the role. I am literally surrounded by Mr.
Duncan thanks to all the representations made of Attar (action figures,
busts, etc.). He definitely made his mark in entertainment and will be
missed.

...and if you're skeptical about signing up, another option which works for some friends of mine is to sign up using a made-up name. This allows you to contribute while keeping your
anonimity and to be pestered only by those whom you choose to reveal your inmost selves to.
