[PotaDG] "Dawn" of a new look
According to Imdb, the change on "Dawn of the
POTA" continues. Michael Seresin will be the director of photography. "Rise" had
Andrew Lesnie, who defined the look of WETA movies ("Lord of the Rings", "The
Hobbit", "King Kong"). Seresin goes way back, doing Alan Parker movies like
"Bugsy Malone" and "Midnight Express" in the '70's. He hasn't really done the
blockbuster thing, except for a "Harry Potter" movie. But he is from Wellington,
New Zealand, home of WETA. Interestingly, he did a sci-fi movie that comes out
this year called "Gravity" (George Clooney, Sandra Bullock) that reportedly has
groundbreaking photography simulating, well, gravity.

John Chambers keeps getting credited with
designing Mr. Spock's ears for "Star Trek" (certainly sci-fi history) yet Fred
Phillips is the main "Trek" makeup designer (both worked on "The Outer Limits",
which Gene Roddenberry raided when trying to get "Star Trek" off the ground).
Who designed them? Leonard Nimoy, Spock himself, tweeted on 1/15/13: "John
Chambers, depicted by John Goodman in "Argo", made some fine Spock ears but Fred
Phillips designed them and created the whole makeup". <.html <.html

I visited John Chambers way back in 1980. He was talking to us(My friend Greg and I) about everything, including Spock's ears. He told us that Fred Phillips couldn't sculpt
anything. He was called to make the ears. Whether or not his original molds were duplicated or not, He wasn't sure. Also, If you talk to any make up artists that were around at his time, they ALL say John was
the best at ears. He could sculpt them in his sleep.

But who "designed" them? Did Phillips sketch them
out as part of his Spock design and Chambers made them physical realities or did
they tell Chambers, "We need alien ears!" and that's what he came up with in the
sculpting?
Chambers was very determined that he alone design
the POTA makeup because he knew it was an Oscar winner. Maybe confusion of
credit on stuff like Spock's ears was a reason.

Scott Z. Burns was the screenwriter who worked
with director Rupert Wyatt on "Dawn" last summer just before Wyatt left the
project. Fox grabbed Matt Reeves and brought in another, Mark Bomback (a Fox
fave who had also worked on "Rise") and apparently they're off in a different
direction. Scott sez: "Rupert Wyatt and I worked on a draft last summer that I
think we were both really excited about and he went into Fox and they seemed to
like it, they wanted a lot of changes and they sort of parted ways over those
changes. Then management shifted at Fox, they brought in a new director, I think
the new director wanted a new writer and I don't know how much of what we did
and I wrote is ongoing. It's kind of heartbreaking because I really loved what
we were trying to say with that movie so I hope some of it survives or that they
come up with something a lot better".
He sez he tried to give the script more
interesting human characters than "Rise" had. "I was loving it, it was a really
fun world to play in. It's really heartbreaking when these things sort of leave
you and you're not even sure why".
Anyway, Fox wanted to take it in another
direction and apparently Matt Reeves had the key. Was Wyatt right or was Fox
right? That remains to be seen. All I can say is from listening to Matt's DVD
commentaries he seems to have a good head on his shoulders and he's not signing
on to mess it up. No one had faith in "Rise" and Wyatt turned it into a big hit
and an acclaimed movie to boot. To replace that director puts a lot of pressure
on Reeves to deliver. He has to knock it out of the park or all he's going to
hear is Wyatt should've directed it. Eventually we'll hear what Wyatt's ideas
were and decide for ourselves who was right.

My question is this: Did he get a chance to ask Lee Delano
about the "missing scene" from the episode "The Interrogation"? And if so, did
he have any memory of it? (And my guess would be no, because I wouldn't expect
someone to remember a small part they had in a TV episode nearly 40 years

Next month "Dawn of the POTA" is supposed to
shoot with a whole new crop of talented people in front of and behind the camera
(except for the Ape Dept.). "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt has moved on but there
seems to be more than meets the eye about his departure. Aintitcool reports
they've heard he had "a miserable time on the 1st film and had to fight for
every inch of goodness".
Reports at the time of release suggested a happy
family, with Fox (especially Tom Rothman) giving Wyatt room to go beyond just a
typical action movie (though they did tinker with it after test screenings and
some interesting stuff, like the ape love interest, got left on the cutting room
floor). I don't know what to think about "Dawn". Does Fox have more riding on it
and is thus playing it safer? Did Wyatt get dismissed because they don't want to
roll the dice on interesting ideas? All will be revealed after it's too late.
And so, my children, we must be patient. And wait.
Meanwhile, the U.K. film company Embankment Films
has snagged a couple of projects from the "Rise" folks. Such as Andy
Serkis' directorial debut "Animal Farm", which Wyatt was once attached to but
some directors are more equal than others. It's being written by Caroline
Thompson, who did some of the better Tim Burton films. And it's described as "a
family film told from the point of view of an adorable knee-high piglet", which
sounds terrible. That is not "Animal Farm", which used an animal society
for political satire (and got a shout out in the original POTA). I consider
"Animal Farm" the grandfather of POTA and I was excited for Serkis and Wyatt to
follow up a POTA movie with that. But a family film about a cute pig? Say it
isn't so, Mr. Serkis.
Embankment also has Rupert Wyatt's new project,
an adaptation of the modern British classic "Birdsong". He had tried to get that
made before the "Rise" assignment. Hopefully now he has the clout to see it
through. The book has a long history as a wannabe film and actually the "Rise"
screenwriters also worked on it (with another director). Last year it was turned
into a British TV miniseries but it deserves the feature film treatment and I'm
glad to see Wyatt is back on it.
Hopefully Fox is doing the right thing and
Wyatt's availability isn't at the expense of POTA.

But would Wyatt have agreed to do the second movie if the first was that miserable? May be some exaggeration there perhaps?
Animal Farm has a special place for me, I studied it in school and have to admit that the animated film still brings a tear to my eye, but yeah, that description of the new film really sounds like crap. I would hope for
better from Andy Serkis and from a British indie film company.

"research was being done." He was always very open to the idea. I guess we'll get something. Not particularly fond of cutesy POTA stuff, but it's something.

Though it seems like almost every big movie that
comes out is in 3D, it's very rare for a movie to actually shoot in 3D. Usually
they are converted after the fact. Off the top of my head I can only think of a
few live action movies that shot in 3D... "Avatar", "Transformers 3", "The
Hobbit". But Bryan Singer reveals that Fox's next "X-Men" will film in 3D so
it's not a big leap to speculate that "Dawn" might as well ("Rise" made more
dough than any "X-Men" movie). If they're going to go 3D they should shoot it
that way. Makes for better 3D.

"The Hollywood Reporter" has scooped the first
big news on the "Rise" sequel "Dawn of the POTA". First of all, Jason Clarke
(from the Best Picture nominee "Zero Dark Thirty") has been cast in an
unspecified role. But there's also some dish on the plot: it takes place 15
years after "Rise" and deals with two groups: "One focus is on the group of
human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another
aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar...to maintain
dominance over his kingdom".

As the casting announcements begin, I notice some
are wondering if the new actors are playing humans or apes. Judging from "Rise"
I think it's safe to say the "known" actors (like Jason Clarke and Kodi
Smit-McPhee) are playing humans. In "Rise" the apes were cast from stunt people
(or at least actors with a talent for physical movement). And they seemed lower
on the cast totem pole. Even Andy Serkis came up last among the main actors
(credited as "and Andy Serkis"). Reportedly Serkis is the star of the sequel,
and getting a great payday, but what about the other ape actors, such as Terry
Notary as Rocket, Chris Gordon as Koba and Karin Konoval as Maurice the
orangutan (she also played the clerk who argued with Franco about court dates in
"Rise")? Will their stars "rise" since they are actors returning to a hit
franchise? Or will they still be seen as glorified stunt people? If they
get more billing priority, how will that affect who is cast as humans?
Since the movie is reportedly about a "group of scientists" we might have some
more interesting human casting announcements to come.
Old school POTA didn't seem to have trouble
getting top actors to don the makeup but such actors don't seem as eager to be
covered over by CG. It would be interesting if "Dawn of the POTA" is a
groundbreaker in advancing credit for CG performers. Really, there hasn't been a
live-action movie with star billing for a CGer; I guess the female lead in
"Avatar". I don't count "Tin Tin" since that was an animated film. We'll see
where the cards land but for now I think the big "Dawn" casting announcements
will be for human roles. <.html <.html

I think the difference with this movie will be if the apes speak.
Then it will be more of a requirement to get the right voices, and it could be like the Disney films where they pay actors well for their
voices.
Obviously a big name actor in RISE would have been a genuine waste of money, but if the apes so talk it could add the dimension of
relevance.

"Argo", featuring John Goodman as the only person
to win an Oscar for POTA, has taken home the big movie prize. John Chambers was
a patriot and was proudest of his work for his government. That his CIA work has
crossed over into movieland and now will be remembered is pretty damn cool and I

On the Oscar red carpet, newly elected POTA star
Jason Clarke said of his character: "I play a guy who's trying to save
humanity". Since the movie reportedly deals with a group of scientists in San
Francisco, presumably Clarke will play one of them. So what could a group of
scientists do 15 years after the plague to stop the human decline? Find a cure?
Create the ultimate weapon? It gives us a little clue where the movie is
heading.
Meanwhile, Clarke may be going
to the POTA but his movie "Zero Dark Thirty" lost the Oscar to a movie
about John Chambers.

Caesar's human resistance is growing. Gary Oldman
has been cast as the human leader Dreyfus. He was the original choice to play
Thade in POTA2001 but reportedly talks broke down over salary. Certainly it can
be said they are going for good actors, so there should be some meaty human
scenes in "Dawn".

Here's a recent interview where Jackie Earle
Haley talks about many of his acting roles over his long career, including his
dream job as a kid working on the POTA TV show. He sez "that one was really
cool, getting that part. I was and still am a huge POTA fan. And, by the way, I
loved the last movie ("Rise"). Honestly, I've liked all the incarnations, if for
different reasons... what was really cool was that Roddy McDowall was part of
the series, so that was really exciting, because I was such a fan of his from
the films... I don't think I ever actually talked to him when he wasn't in his
ape outfit."
Jackie also talks about how a makeup artist on
the show gave him some ape appliances and showed him how to put them on, and he
was an ape for a couple of Halloweens. Here's hoping he gets to return to the
POTA in a role soon.

POTA is on the "Rise" again and that potentially
means new toys and collectibles. I have my own ideas about who would be a good
company to carry the license but I'm taking it to my grave. OUCH! OK, I'll
talk! How about NECA for a line of "Rise", "Dawn" and classic "Apes" figures?
They used to be the poor man's McFarlane Toys but I'm impressed with their work
these days (as reasonable Toys 'R Us toy toys; there's also the expensive
high end Sideshow and Hot Toys). And they've been getting cozy with Fox, doing
lines for "Prometheus" (a recent movie that wasn't as popular as "Rise"),
"Predator", "Aliens", and even the classic "Batman" TV show (which recently got
loose from the legal logjam between Fox and Warner Bros.). I'd like to see them
give it a shot with a mix of the classic and new "Apes". How could we say
"Noooo!"?

I also posted a while back of his admiration for
"Rise of the POTA" (12/7/11, though the article seems to be gone now). He said,
"(Caesar is) one of the most vivid characters I've seen in recent film history,
and it's done with CG but with a person behind it, driving it, which is a
wonderful combination of technology and humanity. Even though it's an ape,
(Serkis) gives it such depth and it's just powerful".
It's fun finding celebs who are "Apes" fans, and
let's face it, we all love Robin Williams. I do, you do and she does. So how
about it? Should Robin do a POTA movie? He's a famous comedian but he's also a
heck of an actor (studied at Julliard, etc.). Would he stick out too much? He'd
probably be the most famous person to appear in a POTA movie since Heston. The
next POTA movie is Serkis' chance to shine and get star billing; he's earned it.
I think Williams is at a point where he doesn't need star billing and would be
happy to work in an ensemble, maybe a smaller role, if he likes the project.
We're getting to the point where the casting
announcements will be coming soon (with a March start date) so I'm just throwing

He also places filming in the "2nd quarter of the

March to Juneish that would qualify as 2nd quarter. Anyway, it sounds like they
are still working on the script/story. That's the latest from the "Dawn"

by Steven Spielberg, whose movie career took off under Zanuck ("The Sugarland

includes Tim Burton, who started his professional relationship with him when
Zanuck returned to POTA; they had a steady partnership for over 10 years. Lots

"Jack & the Beanstalk" or whatever it's
called is the latest in a long line of studio approved "who gives an f"? flops
to come down the pike. Those of us who have been waiting a decade for a
GOOD POTA movie were surprised that Fox almost reluctantly released "Rise"
with a reported $100 million budget (Jack and the B.S.stalk cost $200 million).
I remember saying over the past decade that POTA was Fox's "Spiderman" if they
could get it together. "Rise" went on to make more than many other more
celebrated franchises. It's no secret that studio execs are overpaid bean
counters but once in a while I just explode and have to lash out at them. It
remains to be seen what "Dawn of the POTA" will be like after they got rid of
most of the people who made "Rise" a "surprise" hit (not a surprise to me once I
heard the acclaim from the set and the actors; my take is fully recorded in this
group's archives).
How many studio execs does it take to change a
light bulb? 50; one to change it and 49 to greenlight
it. <.html <.html

Wyatt had to sign a two-picture contract to get
the "Rise" gig so I guess he had to at least try to make it. There's probably
rules that a director can't be forced to make a movie that artistically they
feel is compromised.

But would Wyatt have agreed to do the second movie if the first was that
miserable? May be some exaggeration there perhaps?
Animal Farm has a
special place for me, I studied it in school and have to admit that the animated
film still brings a tear to my eye, but yeah, that description of the new film
really sounds like crap. I would hope for better from Andy Serkis and from a
British indie film company.

(especially Tom Rothman) giving Wyatt room to go beyond just a typical action
movie (though they did tinker with it after test screenings and some interesting
stuff, like the ape love interest, got left on the cutting room floor). I don't
know what to think about "Dawn". Does Fox have more riding on it and is thus
playing it safer? Did Wyatt get dismissed because they don't want to roll the
dice on interesting ideas? All will be revealed after it's too late. And so, my
children, we must be patient. And wait. > Meanwhile, the U.K. film company
Embankment Films has snagged a couple of projects from the "Rise" folks. Such as
Andy Serkis' directorial debut "Animal Farm", which Wyatt was once attached to
but some directors are more equal than others. It's being written by Caroline
Thompson, who did some of the better Tim Burton films. And it's described as "a
family film told from the point of view of an adorable knee-high piglet", which
sounds terrible. That is not "Animal Farm", which used an animal society for
political satire (and got a shout out in the original POTA). I consider "Animal
Farm" the grandfather of POTA and I was excited for Serkis and Wyatt to follow
up a POTA movie with that. But a family film about a cute pig? Say it isn't so,
Mr. Serkis. > Embankment also has Rupert Wyatt's new project, an
adaptation of the modern British classic "Birdsong".

INfilm (the Vancouver Island North film
commission) tweeted that "Dawn of the POTA" will film at Campbell River (the
Salmon Capital of the World) during their Vancouver stay. It's not Lake
Powell but it's a start. Thanks to @PlanetApesNews for the heads
up.
Meanwhile, Mark Bomback has put a Koba picture on
his twitter page, suggesting he's still the screenwriter as they head to
production (and that perhaps Koba plays a significant role in "Dawn", as if we
didn't know). Bomback also did some script work on "Rise" (he's credited with
Caesar drawing his window in his cage) but Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver got the
screen credit. Now they are on "Jurassic Park 4" (also scheduled for Summer
2014) so probably they are less involved in "Dawn" (though still producers,
which they deserve, since none of this would've happened without
them). <.html <.html

I found this interview with "Dawn of the POTA"
director Matt Reeves from Comic Con 2010. As a kid he was big on "Star Wars" (of
course) and collected Corgi toy cars. But he also had Mego "Star Trek" and POTA
stuff (including the treehouse). Probably he's the first POTA director who was a
"POTA kid" ("Rise" director Rupert Wyatt seemed to have a more casual
interest). So we'll see how that might inform his film.

The news that Judy Greer will play Cornelia in
"Dawn of the POTA" brings some closure to one problem with "Rise". She was
introduced and shown to be important to Caesar but they didn't follow through.
The shot of the two embracing as seen in the trailer was cut out (presumably
there was more to it than just a shot). Director Rupert Wyatt said they decided
to leave it out because audiences might find it "too campy". So I guess it's a
good sign that Cornelia's back in the sequel. Her intro in "Rise" will make
more sense. Maybe half a $ billion at the box office bought Caesar some love.
I'd still like to see that scene from "Rise" (which wasn't in the deleted
scenes). Maybe they can use it as a flashback?
Bon voyage to Devyn Dalton, who played Cornelia
in "Rise". Because of her size, she played Caesar as a child at certain
times. Would be cool if she could play Caesar and Cornelia's child. Judy
Greer rocks, no problem there ("13 Going on 30" features Greer and Serkis
together as humans). But it suggests they've had it with primitive apes and want
to get into the talking and riding horses. This might be where Rupert Wyatt and
Fox had a difference of opinion. I remember his concepts were more apecentric,
with nary a human in sight. That would be more expensive, all apes all the time.
Casting people like Gary Oldman means there's going to be significant humanage.
That makes sense, cut the CG folks some slack. And Wyatt suggested a slower
evolution but it sounds with Greer that Fox wants to start the
ballgame. Apes talking, riding horses, wearing clothes, etc. That makes
sense too from a franchise standpoint. That's why we're here, cut to the chase.
Or maybe something in the middle? I just think casting a known actress (with no
motion capture experience) as an ape is pretty significant. It's like being the
first bird to be born without an egg! It's like being the first fish to be born
on dry land! It's like being the first... <.html <.html

This is from the Variety review of "Scary Movie 5".... um.......pass......
Talk about fast turnaround: Movies as recent as "Mama" and the
"Evil Dead" remake find themselves sent up in "Scary Movie 5," the
numbingly inane if cheerfully up-to-the-minute new entry in a franchise
presumed to have breathed its last seven years ago. One scene inspired
by "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" features a roomful of chimps hurling
their feces at the wall, providing a perhaps unintended metaphor for
the writing process behind this unwelcome resurrection. Still, insofar
as past installments have proved frighteningly lucrative (more than $800
million worldwide), there may yet be some commercial life in this
pop-culture barf bag.Tim

POTA". They are William Hoy (

) and Stan Salfas ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0758159/
). Salfas comes more from TV, but he's worked often with director Matt
Reeves on "Felicity", "Let Me In" and his first flick "The Pallbearer". So he's
a comfort zone for Reeves. Hoy has done movies like "Dances With Wolves",
"Patriot Games", "We Were Soldiers" (which featured actress Keri Russell), "300"
and "Watchmen", as well as some Fox action flicks like "Fantastic 4" and "I,
Robot".
"Rise" had the benefit of James Cameron's editors
Conrad Buff and Mark Goldblatt, just as it had WETA- friendly director of
photography Andrew Lesnie. These were safe choices for movie that was something
of an experiment (and with something of an inexperienced director).
"Dawn" seems to be stretching it's legs more. It doesn't need as much of a

did "Cloverfield" for J. J. and Giacchino did the end credit music and now it
looks like Giacchino and Reeves are a team too ("Let Me In"). Giacchino is also the main composer for Pixar and won the Oscar for
"Up".
Giacchino is one of my faves and when "Rise" was
gearing up I asked him if he was going to do it. I'd heard he was a POTA fan and
he told me he is, he loves all of it; the movies, the TV show, the cartoons. But
he wasn't asked to do "Rise". I loved Patrick Doyle's music for "Rise" and would
have been happy if he returned. But I love Giacchino's stuff too and can't wait
to hear what he comes up with (maybe his closest would be "Lost" with it's
jungle boogie/sci-fi weirdness). "Dawn" is Matt Reeve's film and it's his
choice.
Here's my fave Giacchino track for a Matt Reeves
film:

Hey
Jeffers,
On a Facebook
group, people were talking about the latest screening of POTA in Hollywood where
there were many key POTA people and I believe you tapes the talks and did a
transcript that you loaded to the DG?
Any chance you
could help me relocate this or resend?

Imdb has listed the editors for "Dawn of the
POTA". They are William Hoy (
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0398343/
) and Stan Salfas ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0758159/
). Salfas comes more from TV, but he's worked often with director Matt
Reeves on "Felicity", "Let Me In" and his first flick "The Pallbearer". So he's
a comfort zone for Reeves. Hoy has done movies like "Dances With Wolves",
"Patriot Games", "We Were Soldiers" (which featured actress Keri Russell), "300"
and "Watchmen", as well as some Fox action flicks like "Fantastic 4" and "I,
Robot".
"Rise" had the benefit of James Cameron's
editors Conrad Buff and Mark Goldblatt, just as it had WETA- friendly director
of photography Andrew Lesnie. These were safe choices for movie that was
something of an experiment (and with something of an
inexperienced director). "Dawn" seems to be stretching it's legs more. It
doesn't need as much of a safety net from particular experts.

I guess May 17 is as close to a publication
date that we have for Boulle's 1963 novel "Planet of the Apes". The date appears
on the timeline for the 35th anniversary DVD of POTA68. That would be in
France, I guess. The book arrived in the U.S. around the time of the JFK
assassination.
Anyway, I guess a half century is something to go
ape about. And things are looking good for the concept, it's still a big deal.
It's a story that still resonates. Thank you, Pierre
Boulle! <.html <.html

GOOD NEWS FROM HUNTER!
·
Hi, all!
Believe it or not, after some seven years in the making, I've finally released the final Planet of the Apes Rarities DVD (aka Rarities 3)!!
For screenshots of each of the menus (and to see what's on the disc), visit my Apes site at the URL below:
https://pota.goatley.com/dvd/rarities3/
There are two ways you can get the DVDs:
- You can arrange with James to send him blank discs and return postage, and he'll copy the discs and return them to you. If you want to pursue this, contact James at
JamesA1102@...
. You can purchase the blank DVDs from Greg P. For people in the U.S., this works out to $3.50. NOTE: YOU ARE PAYING ONLY FOR THE DISCS, THE PACKAGING, AND THE POSTAGE. ABSOLUTELY NO PROFIT IS BEING DERIVED
FROM THIS SET. You can send the money via PayPal to Greg at urko3085@...
If you want the first two Rarities DVDs, $6 to Greg will get you a set of all four discs. For non-U.S. residents, contact Greg to work it out.
Many thanks to all of those who contributed the content for these discs. I honestly don't remember all the details of who contributed what, so I'm not even going to try to
name names. They can step forward for the credit, if they want. But these discs wouldn't have been possible without them!! Thanks!

Hard to believe but it's been almost 2 years
since "Rise of the POTA", and the Memorial Day weekend marks one year to go
before it's sequel. That's right, "Dawn of the POTA" is getting a primo Memorial
Day release (unless Fox blinks), suggesting the studio has a lot of
faith in it. It's a far cry from the tepid release of "Rise" in the wilds of
August.
What's that you say, you didn't like
"Rise"? Doesn't matter; it's a new director and a new vision. Almost everybody
on the film is new to the POTA. We're all starting fresh (but those who don't
like CG apes are out of luck). A year from now we might yearn for the "Rise"
team if it sucks, or it might be better than our wildest dreams (well, not the
dreams of those who want makeup). There's not much else to say, they are deep
into filming in New Orleans until mid-July and what they are making will slowly
be unveiled in the coming year. Maybe we'll get a tease during Comic-Con in late
July but probably our first look will be around Christmas.
Anyway, I think the one year mark is fun to
ponder, the difference between "it'll never get here!" and "it's coming!". Thank
you for your attention. <.html <.html
