I know some of the Scrolls guys are in touch with Mark Lenard's children - a bit tenuous maybe, but they would have an interesting perspective - in fact the Scrolls team have a decent collection of
print interviews with actors from the show, many of whom are no longer around, maybe they could be included in some way.

As far as Mark's kids: It'd be interesting to hear their memories of their dad being on the series... The SCROLLS print interviews would be a good source of info for FOX to use as well... Now just how to get
FOX to utilize them in some way (and to get FOX to release an anniversary edition of the TV series to start with...)

I have nothing personally against the people at BrokenSea, but as far as this UK stage show adaption: I find it kind of weird that they did that instead of finishing up their adaption of BENEATH first... All I can
guess is that the UK thing was easier to do (fewer characters?) than BENEATH?

I somehow missed this a few months back - BrokenSea's adaptation of that recently unearthed stage show

Yeah, I haven't actually listened to the stage show audio yet, though I reckon the 'uncomplicated' script might suit their talents a bit better than the movie adaptations. As far as Beneath is
concerned, they just uploaded a new chapter in April, after a gap of over a year (I think), so maybe they'll finish it eventually.

Yes, NECA has created figures for the new "Dawn
of the POTA" (Koba is looking over my shoulder as I write this). But they've
also got some coming out for the oldies but goodies. Here's your chance to win a
set of the 3 Classic Apes that hit in July (Cornelius, Dr. Zaius and Gorilla
Soldier). You'll be too busy watching "Dawn" to visit your local Toyz 'R Us
anyway. NECA is having a caption contest based on their photos of the figures.
But the contest ends June 16, so you'd better get over there. Move it,
soldier!

A new TV spot has arrived just as we enter the
last month before the "Dawn" (unless Fox takes my advice and opens July 4rth to
grab some holiday magic). A couple of new shots but mostly the interesting thing
about it is the narration by Malcolm (Jason Clarke). Soon the "Dawn" push will
be going into overdrive.

It's understandable if some feel they've seen
enough and want to just wait for the movie, but like Dirty Harry's punk, "I
got's to know!". Lately it seems to me the best trailers are the second
ones. The first teases, the second gives the dramatic meat and the third usually
showcases the FX (since more of it is done). Though I did think the third "Rise"
trailer was the best. Here's a teaser for the trailer:

| Subject: director sez "Dawn" is "finished" |
.html
.html
The twitter era is incredible as far as instant
news. The director of "Dawn" (Matt Reeves) has announced that he "just
finished. Done.". Are we to infer that "finished" means the movie is done or
some phrase in his own language? Dr. Dixon: "Infer what you will, Mr. Chairman,
I suggest you rephrase the question".
If the movie is done it might that mean it
could come out on the 4rth of July? No, this is the LAST time I will bring
this up. I've always thought that if things were going along swimmingly that Fox
would decide to open it July 4rth. Why? Because if a movie is going to rock the
box office the holidays help because people who might not go to a movie are
looking for some fun on the holiday weekend and say, "Hey! Let's go to a
movie!". There's nothing BIG opening this year on the 4rth of July and usually
there is. It will be the second weekend of "Transformers 4" and perhaps they
have the IMAX theaters sown up that weekend (I believe certain movies get them
exclusive for 2 weeks). But Fox released "X-Men" with "Godzilla" having the IMAX
theaters exclusively. If "Dawn" is great it might benefit Fox to release it on
the holiday (an event) and then those who love it could see it again later in
IMAX. But part of the big opening box office is the inflated prices for 3D/IMAX
and the opening weekend is god (for the perception of whether a movie is
worthy). So would "Dawn" have a bigger opening weekend on the 4rth (holiday,
more movie going) or on the 11th (IMAX factored in). That's what the studio has
to decide.
And even though the director is finished (though
a director is never finished) They will probably tweak the CG as long as they
can. Would an extra week make any difference? No one can say except those who
are working on it. All I know is that most of the biggies this summer have
stopped around $ 700 million worldwide or less. I would love to see "Dawn" go to
the storied $ 1 billion level and I think it has a shot because it's unique but
has a concept and past that people can latch onto. And not much competition. So
any advantage could help, including the 4rth of July. Fin.

"(Dawn is) a film that digs deep, that challenges

spectacular sense of character and mood. "Dawn" is not just a good genre movie

"I'll tell you this: no eternal reward will
forgive us now for wasting the dawn".
- - - Jim Morrison
I wnt to the "Dawn of the POTA" screening with Q
& A at the famous Chinese Theater in Hollyweird tonight (put on by the Los
Angeles Times' "Hero Complex" and presented by Dolby, who bought us popcorn and
drinks). It was in 3D with the great Dolby Atmos sound system.
So let's get the bottom line. This is how the
movie ends: >CENSORED!<. I know, I couldn't believe it either!I'm still
trying to process the movie. I loved it and it brings POTA storytelling to a new
level. But, I dunno, maybe the movie could've used more colors in it's palette?
The humans were kind of bland, which is par for the course in POTA except for
Taylor, Hasslein and the TV show astronauts. The actors are personable and that
ups the humans' game, as it did in "Rise". But we're there for the apes and as
usual they steal the show.
Despite the director saying it's not a war movie,
yes it is and a painful one. There's a melancholy to the movie that I loved but
it's not what people expect in their summer movies. Reeves kept saying he
couldn't believe they let him make this movie. It's a real loss of innocence
story, "Battle" writ large (and epic). I guess it's the "Battle" we always
wanted with plenty of "Battle" Easter eggs (as well as a cool nod to "Beneath",
the director's favorite "Apes" sequel).
There were two touches that stood out for me. The
surprise and terror of the apes when they realize what war is, even for those
who want war. And second, the ape speech is very well done. Science tells us
that apes can't speak because of their physiology. The apes here struggle with
their speech as if their bodies are changing. That made it easier to accept than
if they just started speaking.
The movie is pretty bleak (not that there's
anything wrong with that) but there is a lighter moment that the audience loved.
Let's just say it takes "the weight" off the story for a few minutes. There's
some moments in the movie where the subtext seems to be: the things human beings
can do is pretty miraculous sometimes. Oldman articulated this in the Q & A.
POTA generally seems to be down on humans but that thought gives it some balance
(like the wide-eyed wonder of Cornelius and Zira in "Escape").
That's all I can say for now until people see the
movie. The Q & A didn't really have any big revelations (no audience
questions were taken and the guests didn't linger after a long road of promotion
the last few days; they're exhausted). The director noted his fave "Apes" were
PLanet68, "Beneath" and the TV show ("Battle" wasn't mentioned &
it's presence is felt in the movie). He also talked about how long it took to
get the ape shots (the last shot of Caesar in the movie came in just a week
before the premiere) and how tough it is to make a movie without knowing what
the final version will look like until the FX are in. Andy Serkis said the
horses did not like it when their riders played apes, which caused trouble. I
would've liked some audience questions and maybe the guests would've too for
some variety.
But, a terrific movie and a great
night.

Sounds like you had a good time... I wouldn't have minded a few "spoilers" in your review, but I can see why you wouldn't want to do that... From what your
review said, I get the impression it's a solid movie overall...

actors are personable and that ups the humans' game, as it did in "Rise". But we're there for the apes and as usual they steal the show.
Despite the director saying it's not a war movie, yes it is and a painful one. There's a melancholy to the movie that I loved but it's not what people expect in their summer movies. Reeves kept saying

Rolling Stone has done a history of the POTA
saga:
Looks like the Apes onslaught has begun over a
week before it's release. "Dawn" is all by itself. "Transformers" is old news.
Nothing big is opening on the 4rth of July ("Tammy"?). "Fast and Furious" got
pulled from the front end, "Jupiter Rising" from the back end. Blockbuster-wise,
it's Apes, Apes, Apes in July. <.html <.html

I picked up the "Dawn of the POTA" official movie
magazine today at Barnes & Noble. I had sticker shock when I saw it costs
$15. But it's very thick, more like a book. Is it worth it? I think so,
especially for fans of the old "Starlog" magazine. That's what the articles and
the design remind me of. But where they would drag out a movie over several
issues, it's all here in one place. It pretty much covers everything from
interviews with the actors and director to beautiful full page production
designs, interviews with all the behind the scenes honchos (the FX guys, the
costume designer, the art director). It's got an article about real apes, one
about pandemics (I guess measles has killed more people than any of them).
There's even a POTA quiz. Did you know "Rise" was shipped to theaters under the
code name "Salad"? They even interview "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt.
I wouldn't call the interviews in depth, but they
aren't fluff either. Again, "Starlog" is the model to keep in mind. Lavishly
illustrated, a nice keepsake (unless you wind up hating the movie). They even
asked the writer about how "Rise" should 've been called "Dawn" and "Dawn" is
more like the rise (though actually the apes don't rise in "Dawn" either). Mark
Bomback the writer sez: "What we liked about (the title) "Dawn" is two things.
It's evocative of nature, and this movie is set in a lot of nature, half the
film is set in the woods. It also suggests (moving forward). ("Rise") is
the genesis, so this is really how it gets underway. This is the first big
step". The director sez: "...the title "Dawn" was very apt, because it was this
exciting idea about the dawning of a new species - a coming into
being". <.html <.html

Subject: Summer 2014: the story so far
"Dawn of the POTA" comes out this week. So here's
the latest Box Office Mojo numbers to take the temperature of the summer so
far:
1. X-Men 5: $725 million worldwide - Fox is
already at the top. "Dawn" can only make things sweeter.
2. Capt. America 2: $712 million worldwide
- It's been a quality year for Marvel superheroes.
3. Amazing Spidey 2: $704 m ww - ...except
this one.
4. Maleficent: $630 m ww - What
the...?!
5. Transformers 4: $576 m ww - Quite a haul
after a little over a week. Will pass "Avatar" this week as the biggest hit of
all time in China (the biggest hit in China in 2014 was "The Monkey King" until
this). Best bet to reach $1 billion worldwide (unfortunately).
6. Godzilla: $489 m ww - Has barely passed the
$482 m ww of "Rise", so not the monster hit some thought it would be.
7. Rio 2: $481 m ww - Not a summer movie but
close enough. The original "Rio" wuz Fox's biggest hit of 2011 over "Rise".
Probably this year the apes get revenge.
8. LEGO: $467 m ww - Again, not summer but a
biggie early in the year.
9. "Edge of Tomorrow": $340 m ww - Some sci-fi
fans are mourning that this didn't do better but Tom Cruise will be
OK.
10. "How To Train Your Dragon 2": $293 m ww - Another
shocking underperformer. Comedy is easy, box office is hard!
Where will "Dawn" stack up? We'll find out
soon! <.html <.html

There's some serious monkey business on the
internet right now and it's hard to keep up with all the "Dawn" interviews and
so forth. But I thought this interview was worth noting. Director Matt Reeves
sez there was a finished longer version of "Dawn" (including music) that was cut
at the last minute. And that's what we'll (probably) see on video. He also talks
about the sequel (they're just getting started on writing it but it sounds like
it will continue from "Dawn" and not be set farther in the future).
A word of WARNING, Will Robinson: the interview
ENDS with a discussion of the ending but very vaguely.

"Dawn" director Matt Reeves and music composer
Michael Giacchino did a Reddit Q & A last night (7/9/14). What's groovy
about this, you ask? Well, first of all it's questions from the People, which
are always interesting. Instead of the same questions over and over from the
media. Second, it seems to be the first time the composer has talked about
"Dawn" (they put metal screws in the piano to give it a different sound but he
sez "you can make things strange and weird, but you never want to lose sight of
what's important, which is the emotions, and the character".
Also, it looks like Giacchino agrees to do the
next "Apes" live during this Q & A. Reddit and weep!

Good reviews are fine, but on opening weekend a
young ape's fancy turns to the box office. Fox is reportedly expecting Dawn's
opening to be on par with "Rise" (which opened to $54 million). Fandango is
being a little more charitable, saying presales are in line with what "World War
Z" was doing (it's opening wuz $66 million). Forbes concurs, predicting a $60 -
$65 million opening, maybe $70 million tops. Some of the bigger movies this
summer opened in the $90 million range, but no one has hit $100 million, not
even the mighty "Transformers".
So predictions for "Dawn" are kinda mediocre, but
"Rise" surprised everybody so who knows? "Dawn" might be too dark and violent
(not "fun" violent) for some audiences and families. But in some ways the story
and wow FX factor are similar to "Avatar", the biggest hit of all time.
Considering how much people seem to love this movie, "Dawn" may show where the
cap is for a POTA movie. POTA has always been more of a cult thing than a huge,
popular franchise. This weekend may set the tone for "Apes" going forward.
Good luck, primates.

"Dawn of the POTA" reportedly made $4.1 million
from early screenings (pre-opening day), the screenings where people just have
to see it right away. Where does it stack up with the other blockbusters this
summer? Here's a handy chart:
So far "Dawn" continues to be more in line with
last summer's "World War Z" in terms of "gotta see it right now!" event status.
Z made $3.6 million from it's early showings (and it had that sexy Brad Pitt,
couldn't you just die?) and made $66 million it's opening weekend (around where
"Dawn" is expected to land). Eventually it made $540 million world wide.
In contrast, the heavy hitters this summer
doubled or better Apes' opening night.
Capt. America: $10.2 m. Thursday, $95 m.
opening
Godzilla: $9.3 m. Thursday, $93.1 m.
opening
Transformers: $8.7 m. Thursday, $97.5 m.
opening
Spidey: $8.7 m. Thursday, $91.6 m.
opening
X-Men: $8.1 m. Thursday, $90.8 m.
opening
So is "Dawn" the "World War Z" of the summer? I sure
hope not. Of course it is early and Americans have not been carrying their share
of the box office load like they used to. The saviors have been, well, the
countries that aren't America. So we'll see where "Dawn" ends up this weekend
around the world. Let's hope it's a movie that people may not rush out to see,
but they will see.

Hi everyone - new to the group, but LONG time Apes fan. I saw the new movie yesterday at the first screening, and was very impressed - it sucked me into the characters and plot immediately, and didn't let

I wanted to discuss one of the plot points (SPOILERS!!!) that occurs in the movie. If you haven't seen the film yet, you might want to skip this thread... >>>>
>>>> >>>> >>>> OK - moving on...
When Caesar is shot by Koba, and then nursed back to health the humans, I felt it was a bit of a "Hollywood" style cheat - a case of the lead character being so essential to the franchise that he's
going to become basically "un-killable". In the original movies - lead characters were killed in often shocking manner - the end of "Beneath" and "Escape" are incredibly surprising -
and I felt the same (pleased) shocking surprise when Caesar is shot - I thought it was a strikingly brave choice on the writer's part - only to realize that he was going to be brought back in order to have a
climactic battle with Koba at the end. That's when I felt the movie lose me, just a little.
Putting aside that this is clearly meant to be Caesar's story - and that Andy Serkus is almost single-handedly responsible for the success of the character - do you think that there is room in today's POTA
a surprising left turn like those of the early films? <.html

I saw the "Ape shall not kill ape" writing in the ape school (and of course the references to it throughout the film) - that was really the only *overt* reference I saw to the
early ape films - the rest of the ones you mentioned I didn't consider as homages to "Battle". It will be interesting to see when the blu-ray is released, if the production staff deliberately put in
these moments as "easter eggs" to the fans, or if they're just included without referencing the previous films.
I actually appreciated the fact that, unlike RotPOTA, the writers didn't feel the need to sprinkle the dialogue with nudging allusions to the previous films. <.html

I don't think it would necessarily be bad for Apes to have the same success arc as WWZ - (never saw it, by the way) but WWZ was considered a sleeper hit - it stayed on the charts and
grew in popularity, rather than faded away like most films - I think that word of mouth played a large part in its success, and a similar effect could happen with Apes, which would be a good thing.
Of course, you could also have the result where good word of mouth and great reviews don't make a dent in public willingness to see the movie - such was the fate of "Edge of Tomorrow" which I loved,
but has languished in the US box office.
I've been recommending DotPOTA to everyone I talk to - but so far, none of my friends have a burning desire to see it in the theater, which baffles me. <.html

Welcome to the group. It's a lot quieter than in
the old days. Everybody's on Facebook now, or gave up.
These movies are a lot more expensive
than the old ones and they have to worry about turning people off. It remains to
be seen if they can take a left turn like killing Cornelius and Zira in cold
blood. But this director does seem to have some integrity. He let some dark
stuff into this movie. I was surprised to see Caesar kick the crap out of Koba.
These days that's pretty intense for a hero to do. If "Dawn" makes a decent
amount hopefully the studio will let him take chances like the recent "Batman"
flicks did. I already think "Rise" and "Dawn" did more than we can expect a $100
million + movie to do. They have strong producers in the Chernin Co. so it's in
good hands. We shall see.

Whether or not they were intended to be homages,
they worked for me. : )

Thanks for the review - I was looking at it on Amazon and considering whether I should purchase it or not. If you were to give the novel a movie rating - what would it be?

I think it could definitely get noms for effects, sound, editing, and if there was any justice in the world - for best picture, and acting by Serkis. <.html

I thought I saw in a preview a shot of an American warship sailing up San Francisco bay, which wasn't in the final movie - I wonder if that is the alternate "military" ending
the interviewer was speaking of. <.html

Hi, Jeff - thanks for the welcome! I'm just glad there's a forum to talk about these things, since none of my close friends are "Apes" fans. You sort of
need a current POTA event to get people talking about it again - that's what made me search out this forum.
Yeah, I understand about the whole needing to turn a profit thing - especially with the POTA franchise - it's not like Star Trek or Star Wars which has much larger audiences. The movie does many things
well - I loved the almost classical nature of Caesar and Koba's relationship - almost Shakespearean in its intensity. And the fear of the humans throughout was palpable - as was Caesar's initial distrust
of humans.
On a side note, I've always thought that it would be a good idea to re-visit POTA on the TV screen; the previous two series (live action and animated) both lacked in storylines - these days you could make a much
darker, more visceral series that could incorporate larger story arcs and more world-building, and be a way to keep the Apes franchise in the public eye. But that's just me dreaming away...
