What's up with the figures in the first picture (the one numbered DSC08110)?
I mean there's larger than usual Series 2 figures (and Caesar) on the top shelf, then under that it shows the regular 7" figures... Are the larger ones prototypes or something?

Say it ain't so... it would be enough of a stretch to try to shoe-horn the original movie into the continuity of the new movies made 40-plus years later, but a full-on remake would be as unnecessary as
it would be doomed to failure through comparison. The general view online, among newer fans, appears to be that this is the inevitable direction they're going in. Personally, I hope not, and I think the new movies
can only keep their integrity if they come up with some fresh plots and ideas rather than rehash the same story over and over again, but if it has to, if it really has to, then please don't reduce the original story
into some sort of special effects showreel with Canning Tatum as Taylor spraying orangutans with machine gun fire and reclaiming the planet for the human race.

As you may have heard, "Dawn" fell down and lost
it's crown at the domestic box office this weekend. Thanks to the "Avengers"
love for Scarlett Johansson (I call her Jo because I like to pretend she's my
girlfriend), "Lucy" cleaned up with an estimated $44 million. Though we should
bear in mind that Sunday hasn't happened yet and these things can change
(remember when they thought Dewey beat Truman?). Not only that but "Dawn" had a
further Rock-y road with "Hercules", which took in perhaps $29 million (it
didn't ask nicely, it just took it).
Where's "Dawn" in all this? I'll tell you, I just
ask that you don't scream. It did $16 million. I asked you not to scream! So
instead of being the Weekend Champ of the summer with 3 weekends at #1, "Dawn"
ties "Transformers 4" with 2 weekends each. I heard that one of the Transformers
robots climbed down from it's mountain of money and shook Dawn's hand but this
is unconfirmed. I've said before that "Dawn" will probably be #6 worldwide at
this summer's box office. How will it do domestically? Well, #6. It's made $172
million so far.
1. Capt. America 2 - $259 m dom
2. LEGO - $258 m dom
3. Transformers 4 - $233 m dom
4. Maleficent - $230, 880 m dom
5. X-Men, um, 5 - $230,877 m dom
6. Insert "Dawn" here
7. Spidey - $202 m dom
Actually, I was talking to Jo about this the
other day and she said "Lucy" would kick Dawn's ass but I didn't believe her.
But in the big scheme of things, "Dawn" will be remembered long after "Lucy" is
forgotten. And I say this with due respect to Jo (I love you, baby). And
with this week's addition of international revenues, "Dawn" is now at $354
million worldwide and will be rocking #6 before you know it.

I agree. It's not needed. I thought it was a joke when I read about it. Alien Nation crossover was bad enough. Tim On Jul 27, 2014, at 5:06 AM, "

can only keep their integrity if they come up with some fresh plots and ideas rather than rehash the same story over and over again, but if it has to, if it really has to, then please don't reduce the original story
into some sort of special effects showreel with Canning Tatum as Taylor spraying orangutans with machine gun fire and reclaiming the planet for the human race.

I could see it happening - as classic and surprising as the original film is, there is much that I think the current team could do in reimagining it that could keep the impact of the
original, and expand upon the themes they've been exploring in the new "Caesar" series. We tend to revere the original for obvious reasons, but I was recently sitting by another POTA fan, who was
uncertain about going to see "Dawn" (and I was encouraging him to go) and said he's recently re-watched the 1968 film and saw more flaws than he remembered (he didn't elucidate).

But I confess I will buy it and read it. I like to think that my more cerebral activities will counterbalance my more frivolous indulgences. It's PotA and I'm a sucker for all things PotA. The good, the
bad, and the ugly. I'll put my brain aside for the few minutes I'll be reading it and, if I'm lucky, may enjoy some nice art, and if extremely lucky, will enjoy the story despite the illogic of the

Say it ain't so... it would be enough of a stretch to try to shoe-horn the original movie into the continuity of the new movies made 40-plus years later, but a full-on remake
would be as unnecessary as it would be doomed to failure through comparison. The general view online, among newer fans, appears to be that this is the inevitable direction they're going in. Personally, I hope not,
and I think the new movies can only keep their integrity if they come up with some fresh plots and ideas rather than rehash the same story over and over again, but if it has to, if it really has to, then please
don't reduce the original story into some sort of special effects showreel with Canning Tatum as Taylor spraying orangutans with machine gun fire and reclaiming the planet for the human race. <.html <.html

Maybe we'll get really lucky and they'll do the POTA/Predator crossover I seen suggested by someone somewhere years ago (I think it was in one of the writer's
comments to the editor in one of the 90s comics)...

Issue 94 of SciFi Now magazine has an article about Dawn which includes an interview with screenwriter Mark Bomback who says:
"What we are trying to do - and it remains to be seen if we're successful - is find our way back to the world of the 1968 film, not necessarily in its specifics, but in the notion that the apes will
evolve to that state of culture and that humans will be subject to them."
So it doesn't sound like a direct remake is on the cards and that Dawn and Rise have nothing to do with the originals and are their own thing/version. Neil F

I don't remember specifics of it, other than I think it used characters from the TV series (ex. If I remember it correctly, Galen was working with Scooby, Shaggy and the
other kids)...
In any case, it was something someone really worked on/was working on... It sounds as screwed up now as it did then...

I posted an interview with Zaki Hasan where
director Matt Reeves sez "Dawn" doesn't "literally" lead to POTA68. But at the
rate they're going, those involved with POTA now won't be around when they get
there. It will be as yet unknown people who will make those decisions. Maybe I
will direct Apes 10. : )

They probably should have thought to include a scene where Zako gets them to punch him so it seems he was overpowered – maybe
he’s just going to say he was overpowered anyway. With the outcomes he is facing it would only make sense that he covers this decision with a mistruth.

In the TV episode "The Trap", the gorilla captain, Zako, lets the fugitives go free though he was directly ordered to kill them... It surely
couldn't have been long after those events that the fugitives were spotted again and it would have been known that Zako didn't kill them...
What do you think the repercussions would have been? I'd guess at the very least there would have been a trial with charges of aiding and abbetting, insubordination, and (if The "The Tyrant" is any
indication) "conduct unbecoming an ape"... Do you think he would have served time? Been banished to an outlying/unsettled wilderness? Paid the ultimate price and been executed because he helped known enemies
of the state? <.html <.html

It's been a while since I watched the episode, but I remember it being a favorite, mainly for the great production values (the destroyed ancient city), the teasing artifacts that could have led to bigger things
had the series continued, and the nice character interaction between Urko and Burke.
I read the plot synopsis over at The Sacred Scrolls site, and - if a trial was indeed ordered for Zako's actions, his defense would have been that he had given his word of
honor to Virdon, and that his personal code of honor would have been broken if he had followed Urko's order. Whether this would have been sufficient for a military tribunal is open to question.
Also, the supposition that there would be a trial is not a sure thing - according to The Sacred Scrolls, there are only two ape laws (that we know of): 1. Ape Shall Not Kill Ape
and 2. Humans Shall Never Say No To An Ape - kind of leaves a large gap in our knowledge of ape law and procedure in general - especially in regards to other apes.
The only instances of Ape justice that are codified are the Ape council held against Cornelius and Zira for heresy, and [SPOILER] Caesar's judgement against Koba at the end of
"Dawn". Any others you can think of? <.html <.html

The long term goal is a book.
In the mean time, he FB group has all the photos and information I can get my hands on.
BUT there’s some scrolling and trolling to do to find them.
So….as soon as we can we are turning it into a website, and simultaneously into a book.
Problem is, there is NO information out there, most of the toy companies are defunct, everyone has contradicting stories and dates and
it’s all a big mess right now.
But it is getting there and right now the FB group definitely has to be the best place to find information and photos of POTA collectibles
(well mainly toys).

more time. The deal probably also includes smaller movies Reeves may want to

Subject: box office: raccoon vs. ape
Well, the time of the apes is over. It is now the
planet of the raccoons. "Guardians of the Galaxy" was seen as the underdog of
the big summer movies. Despite being a Marvel movie it was seen as too out
there, too wacky, too "risky" to make a dent. But this weekend it became the
greatest thing since sliced bread and the "savior of the summer". The estimate
is $94 million (about $20 million more than "Dawn"), the 3rd biggest opening of
the summer (behind "Transformers" and "Capt. America"). I saw "Guardians" and
loved the characters but the story was stale. It reminded me of "Thor 2", which
was the first time I fell asleep in a movie in a long time. When Marvel does
space opera it's pretty bland, IMO. But I enjoyed the first part of the movie
(characters meeting, etc.) so more power to it. Hopefully the characters will
have a better story next time. By the way, I couldn't help but see a connection
between Rocket Raccoon and Koba; both bitter experiments who develop a taste for
firearms.
So now "Guardians" is the sliced bread of the
moment and "Dawn" is an also-ran, which is too bad. Judging by this weekend
"Dawn" will probably go down a notch on the big summer box office scoreboard,
from #6 to #7 on the domestic and worldwide charts. Does that matter? It's still
seen as a success (since no one expected much from it). Hard to say. Maybe being
"not all that" will protect it from tampering. Fox has bigger fish to fry
("X-Men"). Maybe they will leave it alone as a reliable moneymaker. OR maybe
they will second guess it as being too much of a downer and could do better if
it was happier (or maybe the raccoons become smart too). The director thanked
Fox for letting him make the movie he wanted but the box office is a slippery
slope and Money is the Lawgiver. I think Fox is proud of these "Ape" movies and
they also have a strong producer in Peter Chernin so they are probably safe. But
sh*t happens.
So where are we on the box office landscape?
"Dawn" added another $8 or $9 million domestic. It's at $189 million, so $200
million is a given, I think. Worldwide it's at $447 million so this week it
should pass "Rise" and reach half a billion $.
1. Transformers 4 - $1 billion
worldwide
2. X-Men 5 - $739 m ww
3. Maleficent - $717 m
ww
4. Cap 2 - $713 m ww
5. Spidey - $707 m ww
6. Godzilla - $499 m ww
7. Rio 2 - $493 m ww
8. LEGO -$468 m ww
9. Dragon 2 - $463 m ww
10. Dawn - $447 m ww
"Transformers 4" of course crossed $1
billion at the box office, the only movie this summer that will probably do so.
It's the 2nd "Transformers" to reach that marker and now Mark Walberg joins
his POTA2001 director Tim Burton ("Alice in Wonderland") in the Billion $ Club.
Congrats, guys! Dawn's Gary Oldman has 3 movies in that exclusive
club.
So will "Dawn" reach the $700 million haven that
most of champs reached? By next weekend "Dawn" will pretty much be everywhere
except some of the Middle East, Venezuela and the all-important Japan (Sept.
19). I see no release for China, which gave the biggest a boost ("Transformers
4" did $300 million in China alone). I'm rooting for "Dawn" to hit $700 million
but we'll see.

Here's an interview with Peter Hyams, who was
going to collaborate with James Cameron on "Planet of the Apes" in the late
'90's. Here's how I heard it went down: Oliver Stone was going to produce POTA
but his interest flagged. By that time Cameron's pals Arnold Schwarzenegger and
Stan Winston were involved and Cameron had a deal with Fox (as he still does) so
Cameron agreed to produce. Directors came and went, the closest was probably
Chris Columbus who filmed the Stan Winston test (as mentioned in this article,
Winston wanted to use facial animatronics instead of just makeup). What I heard
was Cameron owed Hyams a picture because they worked together on a comet picture
("Bright Angel Falling") that got cancelled because of the "Deep Impact" and
"Armageddon" movies. That was the rumor though obviously Cameron liked Hyams
work ("2010") to get involved with him in the first place.
I met Cameron when "Titanic" came out, which was
the closest he came to doing POTA. He was going to produce it next and direct
"Spiderman" (one of his faves since he was a kid). I think I met Cameron just as
he was going to roll up his sleeves and work on it, so his story may have
changed. In this interview Hyams says Cameron was going to direct POTA .
That was not his plan when I talked to him but it may have been that Spidey was
in such a legal tangle and POTA was ripe for the picking (since Fox owns
it) that he may have changed his mind. As it happened, Cameron didn't
direct a feature for another 12 years ("Avatar", which ironically made "Rise"
possible). Later, Cameron commented that Fox didn't let him do POTA ("took their
ball and went home" I think is how he described it). By that time Cameron was at
the top of the worldwide box office charts and has remained there 16 years (and
counting) so it's odd Fox wouldn't let him do it.
This episode is ripe for exploration and this
interview doesn't help much but it's good to hear from Hyams about
it.

I just posted those pics of Stan Winston's POTA
test. But as far as I can tell the actual test hasn't seen the light of
day. We're probably in for a long line of new POTA movies. "Dawn", Apes 3, Apes
4, Apes 5. Yeah, yeah. Apes 6, Apes 7, Apes 8. OK, enough. Apes 9, Apes 10. We
get it! Apes 11. Shut up!
They're going to need ideas for all those blu ray
extras. How many times can they show a guy pushing a button and an ape appears
on his screen? So I think they should do an extra recounting the early attempts
to get POTA remade. Interview Oliver Stone , James Cameron, get the Stan Winston
footage, interview Tim Burton (he should be in stocks being whipped; he might
even like it). That's a pretty rich 10 year history and should be told. Just
sayin'. <.html <.html

"Dawn of the POTA" passed the $500 million
mark worldwide this week and bid adieu to Rise's total ($482 million).
It's now at $504 million worldwide. Will it make it to the $700 million sweet
spot that most of this summer's biggest reached? That remains to be seen. "Dawn"
is pretty much everywhere now. It's got Japan in late September. Most
importantly is China. I realize now that China isn't as hard to get into as I
thought. "Rise" did $30 million there. This summer China graced X-Men with $116
million, Capt. America with $115 million, Godzilla with $77 million, Maleficent
with $47 million and Transformers with $300 million. So I think "Dawn" will
go there and the tally will be significant. But I see no release date
yet.
Domestically, "Dawn" is at $198 million (it took
in $4 million this weekend, coming in at #9). It will pass the $200 million mark
and say buh-bye to "Godzilla" ($200 million) and Spidey ($2002
million) but I doubt it will reach the $235 million "X-Men" made. So "Dawn"
will be #6 for the summer, maybe #7 depending if "Guardians of the Galaxy" keeps
it up.
As for this weekend, "Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles" got audiences to "shell out" an estimated $65 million so "Guardians
came in at #2 ($42 million). It doesn't join "Dawn" and Transformers as being
the only movies this summer to be #1 for two weeks. Too bad,
raccoon!

mark worldwide this week and bid adieu to Rise's total ($482 million).
Too bad,
raccoon!

That's how much I just won in the lottery!!!
No, that's how much "Dawn of the POTA" is
about to earn domestically (U.S. and Canada). It's made $199,051,045 as of
Tuesday, so it should turn the corner either today or tomorrow. What's
the big deal? It's the vicinity of the biggest hits of the year. "Dawn"
officially joins the big boys domestically. Observe:
1. Capt. USA 2 - $260 m.
2. LEGO - $258 m.
3. Trans 4 - $243 m.
4. Maleficent - $236 m.
5. X-Men - $232 m.
6. Spidey - $203 m.
7. Godzilla - $200 m.
8. Dawn - $199 m.
So probably it will pass Godzilla and Spidey and
go to it's final resting place. Did we ever think we'd live to see the day POTA
would do better than Spiderman? <.html <.html

"Dawn of the POTA" will probably take down
"Spiderman" this weekend and then retire in the U.S. but it's hot & heavy
elsewhere in the world with a few places left to open. But still, it's getting
to be that time when we look forward to having our own copies on DVD or blu
-ray. We WANT it! When do we GET it?!
Well, I've taken that question into my lab and
applied science. According to my calculations, it will arrive either Nov. 25th
or Dec. 2nd. Observe:
I took a random selection of big summer movies
that have already announced their DVD release dates.
Spidey 2- theaters: May 2nd; dvd: Aug. 19th . . .
about 3 1/2 months between
Godzilla- theaters: May 16; dvd: Sept. 16 . .
. 4 months
X-Men (Fox)- theaters: May 23; dvd: Oct. 14 . . .
4 2/3rds months
Maleficent - theaters: May 30; dvd: Nov. 4 . . .
5 months
Edge of Tomorrow - theaters: June 6; dvd: Oct. 7
. . . 4 months
As you can see, it comes out to about 4 months-ish
between theater and dvd release. "Dawn" was released July 11, so that would be
mid- November. But taking a cue from the other Fox release "X-Men" I tacked on a
couple weeks. But not too many. Christmas season pretty much kicks off after
Thanxgiving and I'm sure Fox would want to be there, thus Nov. 25th or Dec. 2nd.
You're welcome.

Now being at $200,000,000.00 in the US is really just breaking even isn't it? It's good the movie's doing well and all, but its budget was $100,000,000.00+
wasn't it? Add to that promotion and other miscellaneous expenses it'd really be just about breaking even wouldn't it? It seems like the foreign markets are where the actual profit will be coming from...

BTW, the Cornelius tree ornament will be out by then. you have visited your nearest Hallmark store to make sure they will be getting it, right? I even got the catalogue.

You could be right, I'm not 100% sure on those type of things... I always thought that the film's budget was for the film alone and that promotion/miscellaneous
expenses were in addition to that...
If you're right, the DAWN will be more than even domestically... Whatever the case is, I'm sure there's no question about another one being made...

No, promotion isn't factored in. The budget was
said to be $170 million (so it wuz probably more). $200 million probably is just
breaking even but it did $500 million worldwide (so far). With China and
everybody it could be $600 million, maybe $700 million. Then there's the money
from video, TV, merchandise. Not to mention the money from Cougar. Oh,

Thru Thursday "Dawn of the POTA" made $199, 912,
360 million. So TODAY, Friday, "Dawn" WILL turn the corner of $200 million
domestic. How will YOU celebrate? "Dawn" made $ 4 million last weekend so I
think it's a lock that it will pass "Godzilla" and Spidey this weekend. And then
it will ride off into the sunset in the US. Unfortunately, "Guardians of the
Galaxy" is at $197 million, so it will pass "Dawn" this weekend. You win some,
you lose some. Probably "Dawn" will be # 7 for the summer. As for the year,
depending how "The Hobbit" (guaranteed to pass "Dawn"), "Interstellar" and Moses
(produced by the same people as POTA) do, "Dawn" will probably still be in the
Top 10 for the year. Maybe # 8. Don't cry, that's pretty good. :

Where does it fall on the list of Fox productions? That also counts a lot in the eyes of Fox execs who decide the future of the franchise.
PS. Just picked up my NECAs a few minutes ago. Look great. Also picked up a glass display unit from IKEA over the week and arranging some of my collection in there.

Compared to Fox productions for the year? "Dawn"
is #2 behind "X-Men" (unless Moses pulls it out).
NECA who? "Dawn" or "Classic"?

The classics. I got the entire set. Dawn figures came out a while back. I only got Caesar and Koba, and took a pass on Maurice. Did not get the ones for Rise, but if I want I can still get then from EBay for the
same price as when they came out. Still not sure.
As for the New Cornelius, when I look at his face he's got a bit of a Lucius look. Almost a cross between Cornelius and
Lucius.

I got Maurice and Koba. Skipped Caesar (don't
like his black eyes). I gave Koba one of my Mego guns and gave Maurice
Koba's spear so he looks cooler.
I don't know if I'll get the Classics. Same

Mego-style Taylor.

I didn't get Maurice because he looked like a plain old Ourangutan. No 'character'. But putting a spear in his hand is a great idea.
As I was assembling my display, as much as I admired my meagre (compared to some people) collection, it also got me thing perhaps I should be filling some gaps when it comes to some missing figures.

It's in one of the youtube videos. Don't
remember which, there's so many.
Al |
No, promotion isn't factored in. The budget
was said to be $170 million (so it wuz probably more). $200 million
probably is just breaking even but it did $500 million worldwide (so far).
With China and everybody it could be $600 million, maybe $700
million. Then there's the money from video, TV, merchandise. Not to
mention the money from Cougar. Oh, wait!

Isn't the promotion cost factored into the budget?
Dario
Now being at $200,000,000.00 in the US is really just
breaking even isn't it? It's good the movie's doing well and all, but
its budget was $100,000,000.00+ wasn't it? Add to that promotion and
other miscellaneous expenses it'd really be just about breaking even
wouldn't it? It seems like the foreign markets are where the actual
profit will be coming from...

That's how much I just won

the POTA" is about to earn domestically (U.S. and Canada). It's made
$199,051,045 as of Tuesday, so it should turn the corner either
today or tomorrow. What's the big deal? It's the vicinity of the
biggest hits of the year. "Dawn" officially joins the big boys
domestically. Observe: 1. Capt.
USA 2 - $260 m. 2. LEGO - $258 m. 3. Trans 4 - $243 m. 4.
Maleficent - $236 m. 5. X-Men - $232 m. 6. Spidey - $203 m. 7.
Godzilla - $200 m. 8. Dawn - $199 m. So probably it will pass Godzilla
and Spidey and go to it's final resting place. Did we ever think
we'd live to see the day POTA would do better than Spiderman?

I thought the most there was from RISE was that single Caesar figure (with interchangeable hands if I remember right)?

Well, if the budget was $170,000,000.00 he could have got it in under budget at $169,500,000.00 or even $169,900,000.00 and he'd be right... Just "how far under
budget" is something he needs to be asked... ;)

They've been available on EBay from a bunch of Hong Kong sellers since they came out. The sellers always have "free shipping" so the price you see, whether it be auction or "buy it now" are
what you pay. They go from $20-$30. One auction that ended yesterday without any bids was $21. (but that same sellers also has listings for $29!)
If anything, Dawn has temporarily raised demand for these.
