I guess the big box office news of the week is
that "Dawn" passed "Godzilla" (both domestic and worldwide). "Dawn" will also
take down Spidey on the domestic charts in a couple days but it hasn't happened
yet. Also, despite coming out 3 weeks later, "Guardians of the Galaxy" has
already eclipsed "Dawn" in the U.S. and will soon do so worldwide (it's at $419
m. ww). Note that "How To Train Your Dragon 2" had a big influx of dough and is
now on Dawn's ass.
Domestic (U.S. and Canada):
1. Cap 2 - $260 m.
2. LEGO - $258 m.
3. Trans. 4 - $243 m.
4. Maleficent - $237 m.
5. X-Men - $232 m.
6. Guardians - $222 m.
7. Spidey - $203 m.
8. Dawn - $202 m.
9. Godzilla - $200 m.
10. 22 Jump St. - $190 m.
Worldwide:
1. Trans. 4 - $1 billion
2. X-Men - $744 m.
3. Maleficent - $743 m.
4. Cap 2 - $714 m.
5. Spidey - $708 m.
6. Dawn - $536 m.
7. Dragon 2 - $535 m.
8. Godzilla - $508 m.
9. Rio 2 - $494 m.
10. LEGO - $468 m. <.html <.html

China is now the second biggest market in the
world behind the U.S. and with the way things are going it will probably be #1
soon. Dig these numbers from China (get it? "Digging to China"? Never
mind):
"Transformers 4" - $300 million
"X-Men 5" - $116 m.
"Capt. 2" - $115 m.
"Spidey" - $94 m.
"Godzilla" - $77 m.
"Maleficent" - $47 m.
"Dragon 2" - $25 m. and climbing
These are the kinds of box office additions that
can make an ape a man. Looking at these numbers I could see "Dawn" in the middle
between "Godzilla" and $100 million. $85, 90 million? Before "Transformers 4",
the biggest hit of the year in China wuz "The Monkey King". Think about
that!

Check out "The Monkey King". It's Dr. Moreau on
acid, "Dawn" meets "How To Train Your Dragon". It made $167 million (US) in
China after an opening day of $20 million (US). The biggest hit of the year in
China, save "Transformers 4". A sequel is confirmed!
If this is best they've got, in 2 weeks "Dawn"
will be running that country.

I wonder if Fox was holding off on the China market to let the other movies
get out of the way? Maybe, but looking at what the other movies have done,
I agree, it looks like the best DAWN can hope for is around $80 to $120
Million. I think it might surprise and actually do $120 Mill or
more. We'll see.

The "Monkey King" is very old Asian folk tale thats been done many times before (movies, TV, etc). It's like Cinderella to them.

Maybe, but looking at what the other movies have done,
I agree, it looks like the best DAWN can hope for is around $80 to $120
Million. I think it might surprise and actually do $120 Mill or
more. We'll see.

Think about
that!
DAWN - - - - - CHINA - - - - - AUG.

Here's a fun interview snippet where "Dawn"
director Matt Reeves talks about the next Apes movie (Caesar4sure), his pal J.J.
Abrams' "Star Wars" movie and growing up an Apes (and "Star Wars")
fan.
While we're at it, here's Keri ("Dawn") Russell
talking about maybe being in her former boss J. J.'s "Star Wars" (and still
might, as well as Apes 3). Another fun interview and fun is good.

When "Dawn of the POTA" opened the box office
prognosticators predicted it would do about as well as last year's zombie
movie "World War Z". I winced at that since WWZ looked like a mediocre movie (I
haven't seen it) and certainly didn't have the great reviews and state of the
art visuals that "Dawn" had (but "Dawn" didn't have that dreamy Brad Pitt).
Shirley, they can't be serious. Hey Shirley, I'm talking to you.
But darned if it wasn't true. Those box officers
know what they're talking about. This week "Dawn" will catch up to WWZ both
domestic (at this writing, both are at $202 million) and worldwide (D = $536 m.
, Z = $540 m.). "Dawn" will slightly overachieve, and it still has China and
Japan (WWZ didn't go to China). Plus, "Dawn" looks better since the tide wuz
lower for all boats this summer. But it's pretty much the case.
What gives? Is POTA's image problem that it's
seen as a "monster movie"? Or is there a deeper meaning? Maybe that's one for
the philosophers.

On Thursday, "Dawn of the POTA" passed "Amazing
Spiderman 2" at the domestic box office. You heard right, a POTA movie beat
Spiderman. Whether it can do it on the worldwide stage remains to be seen, but
good job to Caesar and his cohorts. That's a wrap for "Dawn" on the
domestic front. It's #7 for the summer.

APES parodies? I don't know about that... To me, parodies aren't much better than crossovers (which really hold no appeal to me)...
What somebody needs to do is make stop-motion films using the APES figures and the POWER Records adaptions...

I'm just wondering where people are buying their NECA Apes figures? I'm asking because when I checked at Toys R Us, they had none in stock and they seemed pretty
clueless about their existence to begin with...
If I remember right, Jeff (Veetus) said he bought his Koba at TRU, and a guy on the Mego board said he seen them at TRU also, and when I checked awhile ago, they were listed on the TRU website so I figured all TRU would
have them, but they didn't have them locally... Also, on the Mego board, a guy started a thread where he said he asked about them at his TRU and was told by an employee that "no employees of the store order nor
stock Neca products (declaring "Oh we don't even touch that stuff!), and went on to say a representative of Neca comes in and decides what, and how many of each product, will be made available to said
store"... Since some people have stated they bought (or at least seen) NECA Apes figures at TRU stores, then if what that guy was told is true, then it's pretty hit and miss as to if all TRU stores carry
them... Did people here have trouble finding them at their local TRU?

There's been no official release date announced
for the "Dawn of the POTA" blu-ray but people are guessing Dec. 9th. As usual
for high profile releases, deciding whether to get it or not isn't the only
decision. There's also the question of WHERE you're going to get it. Stores have
different ways of saying, "Buy it here!" and "Don't listen to them, buy it from
us!".
So far the various releases are sketchy but they
are starting to take shape. Target is offering a NECA gorilla figure with the
blu-ray. Is it an exclusive version? I dunno, they say it is but it looks rather
run of the mill so far. Maybe they're still working on it. But it does look like
it will be cheap. It doesn't seem like they're charging much more than if
you just bought the blu-ray alone. Meanwhile, Best Buy will have it in a nice
"steelbook" case. No word yet what Walmart is planning.
Then there's the King Kong of "Dawn" exclusives,
for those who want to get a head in life. Designed by WETA themselves, it's a
bust of Caesar (with war paint) plus a 32 pg. book and 4 collector cards. Oh
yeah, and a "Dawn" blu-ray (as well as "Rise"). Suggested price: 130
bananas.
Someone will probably have exclusive discs of
material not on the set itself. Things will firm up as we get closer but still,
so many ways to go. <.html <.html

The box office was way down this summer. That's
too bad, because the movies seemed generally better. Even the biggest hit,
"Transformers 4", didn't do as well as previous Transformers. People just didn't
seem as interested in going to the movies this year. Why? The most common answer
I've heard is that these aren't the franchises people want to see; no Harry
Potter or Iron Man or Fast and Furious (thankfully, for "Dawn"). But there seems
more to it than that for it to be down across the board like this. Maybe it's
economic, maybe there's too many other choices. The studios will scratch their
heads about this and there WILL be a reckoning for future movies. Wipe
that smirk off your face! Box office matters, son.
Anyway, Box Office Mojo has revisited their
predictions for the summer (including "Dawn"). Interesting.

From the looks of things, the Gorilla Soldier that'll be included with the TARGET release of the "DAWN/POTA" Blu-ray is the same as the one that's out there right now... The difference will be the
exclusive packaging:

"You'll never make a beast of Virdon"
- - - sung to the tune of the Stones' "Beast of Burden"
40 years ago today wuz the premiere of the POTA
TV show. Everyone has their own path to being a POTA fan but I'm not sure what
my relationship to POTA would be today had it not been for that show: the weekly
dose at an impressionable age, the accompanying merchandising blitz (Christmas
1974). It left a big impression and I'm sure there's others with a similar
story.
My first exposure to POTA was the premiere of
"Escape" on TV earlier that year. It blew me away but I'm not sure if my mania
would've taken hold without the show. Probably it would've been a series of
movies I loved and would still have on blu-ray. But the TV show indoctrinated me
and let me play in that world for a spell. It was a pretty weird and
wonderful place to visit every week. Late '74 and POTA are so tangible I
can still feel it.
And then, as suddenly as it had appeared, it was
gone. And it left a void. Nothing could replace it. Not the cartoons (which I
couldn't get into; they were cartoons, dammit, not the realism of the makeup,
sets and swell characters). Not the occasional showings of the movies on
TV. Had the show stuck around maybe it wouldn't have felt so special. But it
came, rocked my world and left. And led me down a path where I'm typing
this at 2 AM.
40 years later I still love the show. It hasn't
fared well in public opinion and I can see it's faults. But I love the
characters, love the cast, love many of the stories. I would put it's best
moments up against anything POTA has to offer. And I'm damn glad it came
along. It gave this kid a fascinating window on the world. I've said before that
the older I get the more relevant POTA seems: as a mirror that reflects who
we are and what we're capable of, both good and bad; and also our relationship
to nature, the scientific and sociological themes. And 40 years ago today was
the beginning of my education. Thank you Virdon and Burke for making the trip.

"Dawn of the POTA" was #1 in it's 3rd week
in China, bringing it's total there at $95 million. After it's incredible
opening weekend ($47 million) it slipped fast, getting $15 million it's second
weekend and $7.6 million this weekend. It's worldwide total now stands at $668.6
million.
1. Transformers 4 - $1 billion
2. Maleficent - $754 million
3. X-Men: Daze - $746 m.
4. Cap 2 - $714 m.
5. Spidey 2 - $708 m.
6. Dawn - $669 m.
7. Guardians of the Galaxy - $611 m.
8. Dragon 2 - $609 m.
"Dawn" hits it's last stop, Japan, next weekend
("Rise" made $30 million there). I think "Dawn" will reach the 700 (million)
Club of the big boys, but what do you think? Could it pass Spidey? Cap
2?
Also a tip of the banana to "Guardians of the
Galaxy", which became the first movie to pass $300 million domestic this year.
It also has an animal experiment turned gun-toting badass.

Dawn's last stop on it's world tour is Japan this
week. So what's the temperature of the box office there? Good for Disney, not so
good for action movies:
"Frozen" - $249 m.
"Maleficent" - $63 m.
Spidey 2 - $30 m.
"Godzilla" - $29.9 m.
"Transformers 4" - $26 m.
"Hobbit 2" - $13 m.
"X-Men: Daze" - $9 m.
Cap 2 - $6 m.
"Rise" did $30 million, suggesting they have an
ape-tite, but judging from this I guess we can't expect more. Unless Fox can CG
in some penguins, pronto! <.html <.html

Jack Huston, the grandson of John "Lawgiver"
Huston, has been cast as Ben Hur in a remake of the film that earned Charlton
Heston an Oscar. Old Heston movies are new again lately. Of course a new series
of POTA movies are off and running. This December will see a big budget Moses
movie (from Fox and the POTA producers, directed by Ridley Scott with Christian
Bale in the Heston role). And now there's a new "Ben Hur" movie. Coincidentally,
Heston's own grandson is named Jack.
Given his lineage, mightn't it be cool if Huston
plays one of the astronauts alluded to in "Rise"?

It's asked if these will be a Toys R Us exclusive, but I don't see an answer to that question (and if it's there, someone please point it out)... I hope that they'll be available everywhere, because I
don't want to have to count on the local TRU carrying them: They're not even stocking the current NECA figures, I wouldn't count on them carrying an exclusive either...
Also, reading the comments, it looks like they're talking about doing a 3-pack of TV series Gorillas next year (the three different striped versions)... <.html<.html <.html

In any case, the sentiment is the same: Horrible idea and all down hill from here... (Really, don't those people think before they come up with an idea like this? Gorillas getting help/accepting help from Klingons?
In PLANET and BENEATH, they'd be more apt to gun them down... Sure Klingons aren't "human", but "humanoid", but I do not think Ursus would bother asking them what the differences are...)

"Dawn" did $8.15 million this week. It did $3.7
million in Japan this weekend and $3.5 million in China (it's done $103 million
in China so far, on it's way to being one of the top Hollywood releases there
this year). The total stands at $681 million. And of course I'm kidding, "Dawn"
has done very well.

The apes invaded Japan this weekend.
Surely they passed the magic $700 million summit, right?
No, they did not (and don't call me Shirley). It's new total is
$681 million. Wow! Whoop Dee Doo! A whole $681 million?! I hope it
doesn't spend it all in one place!
So where exactly is that? Well, it's
still $10 million shy of the first "Hunger Games". It's
behind 4 "Twilight" movies. It JUST passed "Forrest Gump", which
came out only 20 years ago. You better run Forrest, run if
you want to catch up to "Dawn" because it's on fire! E. T. is
laughing at it. Laughing!
Do not pass Go, do not collect $700

"Dawn" did $8.15 million this week. It did $3.7
million in Japan this weekend and $3.5 million in China (it's done $103 million
in China so far, on it's way to being one of the top Hollywood releases there
this year). The total stands at $681 million. And of course I'm kidding, "Dawn"
has done very well.

| Subject: post-modern POTA doc? |
.html
.html
Lately there's been a new subgenre of documentary
about interesting movies that didn't happen: the acclaimed "Jodorowsky's Dune"
(about the guy who got the rights to the sci-fi classic from the estate of
Arthur Jacobs); there's a doc about Tim Burton's aborted "Superman" in the works
(had Burton done it he probably wouldn't have done POTA); and now there's a doc
about Richard Stanley's "The Island of Dr. Moreau" ("Lost Soul"). The who, the
what? Stanley was the early director on the '90's version that eventually
starred Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. The director's chair was eventually filled
by the legendary John Frankenheimer ("Manchurian Candidate", "Seven Days in
May", drove Bobby Kennedy to his assassination).
I was primed for the movie. This story of "animal
people" is a true sci-fi classic (written by no less than H. G. Wells) and an
early precursor to POTA (especially now, given the "mad scientist" bent of
"Rise"). The '96 "Moreau" had Stan Winston doing the animals and he was at that
time the guy who was going to do the POTA apes. It seemed perfect since John
Chambers had done the 1977 "Moreau". Well, both Moreaus were disappointments
(though the '77 one scared the crap out of me as a kid) and there's a sense that
Stanley's would've been better. And it sounds like he wants to try again in this
age of Kickstarter. He reportedly wants to do a comic book version and the
proceeds would go towards a new movie (the rights are in public domain so anyone
could do a "Moreau" movie).
Which leads to the eleph-ape in the room. There's
a very rich history of the modern POTA attempts. What about a doc about the
versions that led to the Tim Burton one, and throw in a history of the new CGers
as well? A 20 year history. Get guys like Oliver Stone, James Cameron and
Ah-nuld (but don't call him that when you ask him) on camera and nail down this
history. It could be a 2 hour apestravaganza in the tradition of "Behind the
POTA". Andy Serkis, the modern Roddy, could narrate. The perfect project for a
movie nut or Fox if they want new DVD material. This could be very good if they
get the artwork, early makeup designs, etc. together. Clips from POTA2001,
"Rise", "Dawn" and the originals could fill it out. Could be great. Just
sayin'.

Though there's no official announcement of
a title for Apes 3 yet, the internet has decided it will be called "War For the
POTA" (maybe a play on "Battle For..."?). Imdb goes so far as to say it will
"most likely" be called that.
I've seen no suggestion of that title from
the filmmakers, though I might have missed something. But the general feeling
from the end of "Dawn" and the fact that it's time to get the ball rolling is
that the next one will be the humans' last stand and we may get into some heavy
duty weaponry.
So how is that for a title? Too obvious? Or
should they stick to the sunny titles (but no more 2 "of
the"s)? <.html <.html

A new report courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter
sez "Dawn" has made $110 million in 24 days of Chinese moviegoing (it opened
Aug. 29th). The trade paper adds: "The movie is still screening widely after
nearly a month in theaters".
You may recall that "Transformers 4" made $300
million there, but the #2 Hollywood film is "X-Men 4" (the 4s have it) with $116
million. Could "Dawn" overtake it?
The answer is: yes, it certainly could overtake
it. It could cozy up right behind the home-grown Chinese sensation "The Monkey
King" (>snicker<) as the # 3 movie of the year in China. Hugs all around!

$700M would be a great accomplishment for Apes. Marvel can pretty much make a superhero out of a shopping cart and still have a billion dollar hit on their hands. So Spidey and Captain is pretty

OK, so the "Dawn of the POTA" home video
release wuz announced today. Let's kinda speculate and wring our hands over what
we're going to get, shall we?
The cover: Hmm. Looks kinda cheesy to me. I
don't mind seeing the talented cast on it but this looks like one of those
cheapo straight to video movies. I know Fox was raised better! I thought the
temp cover of Caesar's head shot worked great and goes with the "Rise" cover.
Even the 3D cover with the full head shot looks bad (the cartoony green
eyes just suck). Go back to the original cover we've been seeing. If it ain't
broke, don't fix it. Maybe the shot of the cast would look good on the back.
Here's the covers for those who didn't see them.
Extras:
Audio commentary by director Matt Reeves: I'm
looking forward to this. I've listened to his commentaries for "Cloverfield" and
"Let Me In" and he's a good talker. Some are good at it, some aren't and he is.
Deleted scenes with optional commentary by Matt
Reeves: "Dawn" as seen in theaters was a trimmed version of how it was going to
be. The excised scenes even had music already. Looks like instead of an
"extended cut" ("director's cut" isn't the right thing since Reeves seems happy
with the theatrical version) we'll get those scenes separately. It's a plus to
have the director talk about them and why they were cut.
I think most of the titles of the extras are
self-explanatory but we'll obsess over them anyway. The announcement sez there's
about 2 hours of extras. Sometimes companies include the audio commentaries in
their approximation of how much extra content there is. But since the movie
itself is over 2 hours I assume they aren't counting
the commentary.
Journey To Dawn: Probably this deals with
the story/script, maybe how Reeves became involved and perhaps even his own POTA
fandom. I've heard he made a POTA short film as a kid and if they could include
some of that it might be cool (if it even still exists) but I wouldn't count on
it.
Andy Serkis: Rediscovering Caesar - We can guess
this is Andy talking about playing Caesar and how the character has changed
since "Rise". This is the only doc that comes with the plain old DVD
version.
Humans & Apes: the Cast of Dawn - Um, sounds
like this is interviews with the actors playing human or simian roles.
The World of Dawn: There's many possibilities for
this, but I'd guess it's about the production design.
The Ape Community: Probably not about the
ape actors since they are taken care of above. They had a lot of rehearsals
figuring out the ape communication, hierarchy, etc. so this could be about that.
Move Like An Ape: I'd bet this is about
Terry Notary and his Ape School. Terry's been the movement coach for POTA2001,
Rise and Dawn. He grew up an Apes fan, had the Megos and considers working on
the Ape films a crazy dream come
true.
WETA & Dawn: Yet another look at the CG
meisters, and well deserved. They revamped pretty much everything to improve
upon Rise and they're always worth hearing from.
Fight For a New Dawn: OK, what's this one? The
stunts? The weaponry? Or an overview of the filming?
Dunno.
4 galleries: I love galleries. Say what you will
about POTA2001, I dug the in-depth galleries of art, props, etc. on the
DVD. What will the galleries be? Maybe 4
different sections of the film. Maybe 4 different aspects: costume designs,
sets, ape designs, unused scenes. All I ask is that it's groovy. These galleries
will also be on the DVD.
Final analysis: There's nothing we can do about
it. Next!

Because DVDs don't have the space for all that.
They'd have to add a second DVD. They figure if someone is a movie buff who's
interested in all that, they have blu ray (or 3D blu ray), which is a better
presentation.

Last Saturday I took my cousin to see "Dawn of
the POTA". We had planned to go but she was gone this summer so it took until
now. "Dawn" is basically in cheap, second-run theaters now (I paid $2 a ticket)
and I was prepared for the worst. But thanks to digital, the picture looked as
good as it did in first-run theaters (though the sound was a little low). My
cousin loved it. But she said later that she preferred "Rise". She acknowledged
they were totally different kinds of films, but felt "Rise" had more emotional
ups and downs (she mentioned the scene where John Lithgow died). Eric Greene
told me the same thing, he loved "Dawn" but preferred "Rise" (Eric was invited
to the premiere of "Dawn", where Andy Serkis told him what an inspiration his
book is; I think that says a lot about Andy that he's not just researching apes
but is also watching "Behind the POTA" and reading Eric's book).
Anyway, I think this is a good topic: which is
better? It doesn't even have to be "better"; which do you prefer? It brings me
right back to the fact that generally "Escape" is considered the best of the
original sequels but there are some fans who prefer apes on horses and humans in
cages. I think of "Rise" as the "Escape"/"Conquest" of the current iteration.
Maybe there's something to be said for POTA set in the human world. It adds
another layer. I know that "Rise" will always bring me back to the shock and
admiration I felt to see for the first time they were really going for it.
"Dawn" rocked but it didn't surprise me about taking an expensive POTA movie
seriously because I had already had "Rise". "Dawn" did not sell out but I was
more blown away by improvements in the apes, in the epic look. Basically, it had
the POTA elements: apes on horses, humans in cages. Storywise, it was more
predictable, and it didn't have the shock value of a modern POTA story taken
seriously. "Rise" had taken that.
It's hard for me to even pick between the two
since they're so different, and both are awesome. I'd have to go with "Dawn"
because I can't fault the story and the improvements of the apes and the look.

I personally thought that "Dawn" was immeasurably better than "Rise" - with certain caveats; (a slowdown in the third act primarily). I understand that some people
like to have an emotional connection to the characters in movies, and that by shifting that emotional weight to Caesar and his tribe is difficult for some viewers who might be expecting something more resonant with the
human side. With "Dawn" the humans definitely get the short shrift, whereas in "Rise" it was more even-handed between humans and Caesar.
The filmmakers have said that they're most interested in telling Caesar's story in this series, but hopefully, in the next installment, along with giving us great action and ape characters, they can beef up
the human element as well. <.html

I was very much involved with the humans in
"Dawn". Though I thought they were kind of bland characters, which I could say
the same for the humans in "Rise". But I would like to see the family again
(Malcolm, Ellie, Alexander). I think it would cheat the ending of "Dawn" if they
were with Caesar again (the ending is literally the exit between human
and ape) but if the next one is the big war between humans and apes they could
be on the human side as the voice of reason.

pay-per-view or just buy the DVD outright... (I did buy the "DAWN" novel, but haven't started it yet: I need to finish "Firestorm first...)

Anyway, I think this is a good topic: which is better? It doesn't even have to be "better";
which do you prefer?

Can't believe you still haven't seen Dawn yet. At least you'll have a holiday treat (besides the Hallmark Cornelius tree ornament coming out next month.)
I'm about 100 pages in to the Dawn novelization now. No significant difference to the movie yet. I do enjoy reading about what some of the apes are thinking as the story progresses. Dario

Are you serious about the Cornelius ornament? In a way, I don't like the idea of that: In my opinion, APES doesn't need an X-Mas ornament (leave that to ST, SW, and the Simpsons!)... Still, an APES Christmas
ornament isn't any more out of place as some of the other merchandise released on it thru the years... If it's cheap enough though, I'll admit I'll probably be tempted to buy it...

Whoever creates (or created) these birthday reminders: If possible, you should add that Woodrow was Maximus in the original POTA film...

.html.html Here is the info on the ornament:
It's $20 in Canada so consider yourself lucky.
Yes it's a bit strange, but Hallmark seems to have bitten the 'franchise' characters bug in the last few years which must be profitable as their selection keeps growing. It's not the strangest thing
either if you look at what they have offered over the years.

Well, I looked at him and he's actually not too bad looking (I'm glad I was to see that he is *not* wearing a "Santa hat")...
If I read it right, it says he's $14.95 with purchase, so he'd probably end up being close to $20.00 here in the US too... (Unless they have a discount card section or something...)
