Subject: Re: Rise vs. Dawn

I've seen DAWN twice, and must say that although I really liked RISE, I really really REALLY liked DAWN even more. Not to say that it misses the mark a tad: I mean, come on, why can't they introduce some female gorillas and orangutans, an oversight that all the previous (i.e. "classic") POTA films suffered from, with the sole exception of the female gorilla present at the funeral of the male gorilla (which Taylor disturbs)...?

The primary reason I really dug DAWN was the political subtext (SPOILER ALERT). In the film, Koba carries out a "false flag" operation: an attack on the ape village, and on Caesar himself, which is then blamed on the "enemy" humans, an "incident" which is then used as a pretext for going to war against them.

Remember how Ursus used the "incident" of the missing scouts (and the tortured twelfth scout) as an excuse to plan an invasion of the Forbidden Zone? Remember how Hasslein wanted to kill the Ape-onauts (and especially the unborn child in Zira's womb) because of the Apes' historical -- i.e. Hasslein's future -- subjugation of Mankind? Remember how Breck wanted to "crush" the rebellious slave-apes once and for all by using the acts of outright defiance they had committed as his pretext for action? Remember how Kolp used the "incident" (of the incursion by Caesar, Virgil and MacDonald, all three armed) to spur his own military response against Ape City?

The "incident" that BENEATH mentioned had more than a little to do with the infamous Gulf-of-Tonkin incident which led to the escalation of the Vietnam War -- a "false-flag" operation very much in the vein of Koba's actions in DAWN.

The POTA films were -- among other things -- political films, using allegory and satire to comment on current events. For those of us who are outraged at the ginning-up of so-called "evidence" of WMDs in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was in power, as a prelude to the Coalition-of-the-Willing's invasion and destabilization of that messed-up nation, well, a film like DAWN holds up a fun-house mirror to our sordid recent history, and gives us another perspective to see it in.

That is why DAWN is, in my opinion, even better than RISE, which set the stage for this film rather well, I must admit.

Was it ever confirmed that there is a female Gorilla in the PLANET funeral scene? I don't remember it ever being?

Hmm... is that orangutan in the bookstore a female? In John Jakes' novelization, he refers to the character with male pronouns. Not that that proves the on-screen version was male, I'll grant you.

As for the female gorilla at the funeral... isn't there a behind-the-scenes bunch of photos that includes not only "her" but the short actor who portrayed the boy gorilla ["Look! It's a MAN!"]...? I'll have to watch the scene again, but can't "she" be seen on the other side of the wall, where the boy gorilla had been sitting (or situated) next to her before he gets up to follow Taylor and point him out? Hmm... damn, now I gotta watch PLANET again! Now look what ya made me do???

The CONQUEST figures are awesome, but Julius seems a bit out of place with them... It should have been Julius, Taylor, and Lucius in a wave/series, and then Caesar, Slave Gorilla, and a Slave Orangutan in their own series/wave... But, however he's released, it's good that Julius is finally getting a figure of his own...

The general consensus these days does seem to be that not only is it a female playing the role, but that she's a female Orangutan character... Not saying that could never be disproved, but I'm going by others comments/opinions I've read thru the years... She does have "female features", so I'd go along with it...

As far as the book differing from the screen: If I remember right, the CONQUEST novel basically describes Armando as short and round, so that description is quite different from what we seen on screen with Ricardo Montalban, just as with the Orangutan in question... (That description of Armando might be from ESCAPE, it's been so long since I've read either one, I can't say for sure...)

I'll have to double check PLANET on that too... It does seems like somebody did some screen-grabs of this, but I can't remember who did them or even what group they were posted on... But in any case, if there is a female Gorilla in PLANET, she's not wearing the female outfit that was made (and of which there are pictures in circulation...)

Having just recently been introduced to "Modern Family", we've been binge watching Season 5. This POTA moment popped up in Episode 7, "A Fair to Remember". It is the Dunphy's 20th anniversary and the wife played by Julie Bowen is stressing on what to get her husband. "20 years is supposed to be china,...what am I gonna get him...a plate?" then she holds up this, in my opinion, very nice plate featuring Galen and sadly, ashamedly says "I've already done that."
POTA popping up in any situation brings a smile to my face...and I'da LOVED to get that from my wife on our anniversary!!

"Dawn of the POTA" is still on the cusp of entering the $700 million worldwide stratosphere. But this week it passed a "Twilight" movie ("Hunger Games" and now "Twilight"? OMG, couldn't you die!). Maybe more signif is this is probably Dawn's last week rocking "Guardians of the Galaxy", which just opened in China to $26.6 million (though Dawn's was bigger, $47 million, but I'm not here to talk about whose is bigger). Anyway, on to it's final milestone.
And welcome back, Box Office Mojo!

 1. Transformers 4 - $1 billion
 2. Maleficent - $757 million
 3. X-Men: Daze - $746 million
 4. Cap 2 - $714 million
 5. Spidey - $709 million
 6. DAWN - $699 million
 7. Guardians - $687 million

Happy Columbus Day! Chris Columbus ("Harry Potter") wuz one of many directors to take a crack at a modern POTA movie, which will probably be mentioned in the new book "POTA: the Evolution of the Legend", which is published Tuesday. It's the first nonfiction book about POTA authorized by Fox and is said to include much groovy stuff from Fox's archives. I guess it could be considered the first coffee table book of the whole franchise (there wuz the Rise/Dawn "Art of"). Not much to say until we see it 4 ourselves. But it's written by Joe Fordham (who has a long history with the FX industry journal "Cinefex" and wrote their current "Dawn" article) and Bond, Jeff Bond, known for his writing about film music (he wrote the liner notes for the acclaimed rereleases of the POTA and "Beneath" scores). Lookin' good.

Wasn't Joe Russo working on an updated editon of "POTA Revisited"? Any word on that one?

I received my copy in the mail today, and it's a beautiful book - although I would say it's far less complete than what *should* be accorded to the Apes film/TV saga.

For comparison, I also have the Harry Potter "Page To Screen" book, and it's more than TWICE the length of the Apes book - with a very similar layout and quality.  The Apes book feels much less complete than the Harry Potter one.

That being said, Evolution of the Legend has some great photos, thick, glossy pages, and short, interesting articles on everything from the films and TV shows to the music and even failed Ape projects over the years.

Did anybody else get the hardcover book "THE ART OF THE FILMS DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES AND RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES"...? I ordered a bunch of stuff a month ago, including the DAWN novelization, the soundtrack, and this huge book. It's 11 inches tall (i.e. spine length), 12 inches wide, and 176 glossy pages long. It's priced at $34.95 US, but I think it was a bit cheaper thru Amazon.com. A little spendy, but I live a fairly frugal life, so once in a while I can splurge. As an APES fan, I thought it was worth it.

Man, I wish Bill Creber (et al.) would put together a similar book on the original POTA film (and its sequels). Hell, I'd shell out twice as much for THAT!

I didn't get it but I looked through it at a book store. Nice, but not worth the dough. I got the POTA: Evolution of the Legend book. A nice keepsake but a disappointment in some ways. More later.

.html.html I'm with you: An "Art of the Films: PLANET OF THE APES Classics" book would be great... That's one I'd buy...

I'm not into the new rebooted franchise all that much, not like some people are anyway, so I'm probably going to pass on the book you bought: I'll wait a year or so and wait for it to hit the reduced books/closeout section... I'll probably buy the DVD of DAWN when it comes out... I have the DAWN novel, and its prequel novel, & I'll probably buy a few of (or all of) Neca's DAWN figures, but anything other than that: Probably not enough interest in it so I'd be skipping it (again, until it hits closeout, then "maybe" lol)...

It's done. "Dawn of the POTA" reached the $700 million club where most of the movie biggies (save "Transformers 4") reside. But so did "Guardians of the Galaxy", so "Dawn" moves down a spot to #7.
      1. Transformers 4 - $1 billion worldwide
      2. Maleficent - $757 million ww
      3. "X-Men: Daze" - $746 m ww
      4. Cap 2 - $714 m ww
      5. Spidey - $709 m ww
      6. Guardians of the Galaxy - $705 m ww
      7. Dawn - $700 m ww

I don't think the old girl has the juice to pass Spiderman (though she stepped on the arachnid in the U.S.) so this is pretty much it. Not a bad showing for a movie that tries to do more than just show us a good time.
There's some more biggies coming, like "Hobbit 3", "Hunger Games 3" and Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar", so finishing in the Top 10 of the year isn't assured but let's keep our stinkin', damn dirty fingers crossed.

Same here. We have seen a lot of that art already but it would be nice to have it all collected and documented in a beautiful art book.

I like the Rise/Dawn books but I'm not willing to shell out big bucks for them. I'll only get them for the right price.

I rewatched "Behind the POTA". At this point all I can do is be grateful. Everybody is dead except for Natalie Trundy, Linda Harrison, William Creber and Eric Greene. What a gift to have all those people talk about POTA. We are entering a time when POTA is a big deal and Fox will want some new stuff for their DVDs. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff that didn't make the cut (there was a long Roddy interview on the special edition "Behind" DVD that none of which ended up in "Behind"). I reckon that stuff would be a wealth of bonus material for future DVDs. I would also love if "Behind" was redone in HD. Something to consider as we head toward the 50th anniversary.

.html.html You're right about them not using the long Roddy McDowall interview stuff in "Behind/POTA", but if you've ever watched the 35th Anniversary edition of PLANET with the audio commentary on, they do use some Roddy "sound-bites" from the long interview in the audio commentary... While using "sound-bites" from Roddy & Kim, and John Chambers and Natalie Trundy was "okay", I would have preferred real audio commentaries from surviving cast/crew/etc. ("real" as in someone talking in real time while the movie's going on)...

Film commentaries could be/would be good things to add to future reissues of the films on DVD, but at this point there's not too many people left to do audio commentaries... Maybe Lou Wagner, Linda Harrison and Buck Kartalian (if he'd be up to it) for PLANET, Natalie Trundy and Linda Harrison for BENEATH, Natalie Trundy, Bradford Dillman, and Eric Braeden <like that'd ever happen> for ESCAPE, Don Murray, Natalie Trundy, and composer Tom Scott for CONQUEST, and the least popular of the sequels seems to have the most survivors that could do commentary: BATTLE has Bobby Porter, Natalie Trundy, Austin Stoker, and Paul Williams to do audio commentaries... Of course they could also have William Creber do commentaries for the films he worked on, and they could do interviews with surviving extras, make-up artists, film crew, stunt people, etc... But of course, all of this will probably never happen...

I'd guess your remark that there's plenty of stuff that didn't make the cut for BEHIND is probably what they'd end up using since it's already been bought and paid for... They might want new stuff for their DVDs, but I can also see them *not* wanting to put much cost & effort into it...

In what I guess is Dawn's first award, the OURF (Orang Utan Republik Foundation) has awarded "Dawn of the POTA" it's PONGO award. The award is dedicated to works that show other species' right to exist. OURF works to protect threatened species in Indonesia, particularly the orangutans. While "Dawn" getting an award from an orangutan protection group might seem like an easy win, it's still an ape-propriate honor. Another honoree is the James Cameron produced global warming doc series "Years of Living Dangerously" which I saw and was very good and eye opening. While not exactly an Oscar, this is important stuff, so congrats "Dawn".

And he's bringing along Mark (POTA2001) Wahlberg and John Goodman (the former John Chambers in "Argo"). Paramount is positioning this for the Oscars. Could it be the Battle of the Ape directors this year (Wyatt vs. Matt Reeves, with maybe Tim Burton for "Big Eyes")? No, but who knows about the future?
"The Gambler" gets a limited release Dec. 12th and opens wide in January. And no Kenny Rogers in sight.

Speaking of "POTA: The Evolution of the Legend"... the copy I forgot that I had ordered a month or so ago arrived less than a week ago. I paid around $28 for it (plus S&H), which was a heckuva lot cheaper than its $39.95 cover price.

There's a lot to like about the book, so I won't gripe about its shortcomings, except to point out one particular disappointment I had with it: the book glosses over the TV series, not even giving us an episode guide to tell us -- what we POTA fans already know, but what newbies to the franchise might not know -- about the stories that were told. They covered some of the peripheral matters involved in the making of the brief TV show, but... jeez louise, they missed the boat.

At 256 pages, they cover much if not all of the APES phenomenon. I would've gladly paid twice the cover price for a book twice as thick that covered it all, and more fully... but I guess I should be happy with what they did include, for the most part. Like I said before, there's a lot to like about the book. I give it a 7 out of 10.

I wish I knew the release dates as well as I keep having to drop in stores to see if they've received them.

I've been trying to get one of those Cornelius "scalers" all week after hearing that in the US Target and Toys-R-us were sellers that were stocking them. Went to 2 Target stores and one  Toys-R-us store this week to see if they had any. No luck. The good news is that they at least showed up on the Target store database (sometimes Canadian stores do not carry certain items that their US counterparts carry.) But the scalers are not something that the stores can specifically order as they are treated like cards and knick-knacks at the front of the store. So all I can do is drop in periodically and check until I get lucky.

It's enough to drive a human nuts.

After reading what you wrote, I did flip to the TV series section of the book and just glancing at it I seen a few things that were wrong... One mistake somebody should have caught was the picture of Galen and  Kira: That's Roddy and a stunt double (which is clearly a male chimp because you can see the collar/bib on his shirt is a male's, not a female's...)

Looks like Fox is going to promote the "Dawn" cast in the Best Supporting category (including CG thesps Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell). They are looking at it as an ensemble film (plus it might be easier to get a nod). Of course, the Oscars have a rough history with sci-fi and with sequels, so it looks pretty bleak. But lately sci-fi has been making inroads and the film wuz widely admired. "Interstellar" wuz supposed to be the sci-fi darling of the year but it's reviews have been mixed.

The "Dawn of the POTA" gang is out and about promoting the upcoming "Dawn" blu ray/DVDs (December 2nd). While talking to Coming Soon, director Matt Reeves gave a little hint where the next flick could go. He sez in "Rise", Caesar wuz a revolutionary. In "Dawn", he wuz a leader. Where in hell do they go from here?

Reeves sez: "The notion of what we're after with the 3rd is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history. He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status... We're trying to play out those themes".

Yeah? So, what does that mean? Will he be worshipped? Will it go to his head? Will absolute power corrupt absolutely? It's hard to imagine Caesar being corrupted but that's what might make it interesting. Moses wuz called the "lawgiver", so will Caesar become the Lawgiver? Caesar has been the hero for two movies. Could something so terrible happen that he turns his back on the humans and seals their fate?

Both agree the future won't be easy for Caesar. Reeves sez the next sequel is "going to press into some very painful emotional places for him". Serkis adds: "There's potential war (at the end of "Dawn"). He's going to have to lead the apes in darker times. I think it's going to be very powerful". Darker than "Dawn"? Get out of town!

That was one of my predictions with the way they keep harping on about how Caesar "almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status... We're trying to play out those themes" : I said people were going to start saying (or in your case, asking if) Caesar is/will become The Lawgiver and now with speculations like this occuring, it looks like the dam has sprung a leak... I just hope they get that leak repaired...

I can see it now: People will say Caesar is The Lawgiver and that some ape history revisionist changed him from a chimp to an orangutan (which of course we know is not the case because he is and always will be an orang...) People will get so desperate to try to connect the rebooted films to the original(s) that they will come up with all kinds of half-a**ed ideas and speculations to try to get them to "fit" together...

Matt Reeves sez he's outlining "Apes 3" right now ("I'm pretty excited about it") and gives us a little more hint about it: "The oncoming war is what "Dawn" was all about avoiding and it wasn't avoided, so what does that mean to (Caesar) as a character and how will he lead his (apes) through this?". So it would seem it's going to be about the war and it will turn Caesar into the ape Moses. Got it.
Reeves adds that the title he's got in mind would be one word shorter than "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". Well, it won't be "War For the..." or "War of the...". Maybe it's only one word and then POTA. "Damn the Planet of the Apes"? "Ascend the Planet of the Apes"?

Last night (11/10) wuz the premiere screening of Rupert Wyatt's 1st movie since "Rise of the POTA". "The Gambler" stars none other than Mark (POTA2001) Wahlberg and also has Argo's John Chambers, John Goodman. Wyatt has also been doing press for the film and Collider asked him to give his thoughts on the Apes sequel that went on without him.
He sez: "I thought it was beautifully directed; an incredibly well-made film. It's hard, you know, because I very much wanted to do the sequel. I was very passionate about doing the sequel and other (Ape) films. I love that franchise and I'm thrilled in a way for Matt and what he achieved with that because he achieved something I probably couldn't have because he did something different. He's his own filmmaker, I'm a different filmmaker, so it's great he's had success with that film and the fact that the franchise lives, that's what we're all hoping for".
He talks about how he was going to bring the apes back into the city to learn the human machines; he sez "(they'd) evolve technically, sort of figure out the combustion engine, so in a way interact with our society. And for me, I found that fascinating". Sounds to me more like a prequel to Boulle's novel than to the society of the original flicks.
So what happened to Wyatt? The official reason wuz that he didn't feel he had enough time to do the film by 2014 (after false starts with scripts that weren't working). According to producer Dylan Clarke, Wyatt was kind of aped out and wanted to make a smaller film first. But 2014 would have been 3 years, long enough between films for the studio. Matt Reeves came in fresh and pretty much cranked it out and made the release. Now Reeves is in the position Wyatt wuz, burned out from making one ape movie but having to go right into a new one (especially if they still want a 2016 release).

This is cool. Here's picks of NECA's 8" Taylor that is meant to remind of the Mego Ape figures of old. Back then there wuz only a generic "Astronaut". Revenge is sweet, even if it's 40 years later.

Looks like the "Dawn" video will include a "preview" of Fox's upcoming Moses movie "Exodus: Gods and Kings". Lots of POTA/Moses connections these days. Of course Moses wuz one of Charlton Heston's most famous roles. "Rise" could be considered a retelling of the Moses story (the writers saw it that way). Recently the "Dawn" director called Caesar "the ape Moses". And the same people who are bringing us the new Ape movies (the Chernin folks) did the "Exodus" flick. Holy Moses!

Maybe Toyz-R-Us is feeling the guilts for having an exclusive so they're stocking up on Apes. Ursus looks magnifico. The sculpts on Zaius and Zira are good but I have a prob with their colors. Too much orange on Zaius' face, too much white on Zira. They do such good work, I just wish some of the colors were more on point.

.html.html I checked my local TRU when the first batch of classic APES figures were hitting the stores: They had nothing and when I asked the worker about them, he had no idea what I was talking about... He asked his coworker and the response was the same...

People at the Mego Museum mentioned that at their local TRU stores, the NECA stuff was in its own little area in the elctronics/games dept.. Knowing that, I'll check my TRU one more time to see if they're finally carrying them... I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath...

And as far as their colors, not having seen them in person, I can't comment on the new batch, but I wasn't overly impressed with the way the first batch's Zaius looked... With the hair being the way it is it was lacking something... I suppose I could do like Jessica and fix the hair/parted bangs, but since I'm leaving them boxed up, I'll just leave him...

One week to go until the "Dawn" home video arrives. This article has a clip from the blu-ray centering on Keri Russell (Ellie) but below that is an interview with director Matt Reeves on what the future has in store for Caesar.
Reeves: "What we want to do is take the movie away from San Francisco, into a sort of larger landscape, to allow the movie to be expansive but not lose any of the intimacy... this notion of our nature, the way in which POTA explores the sort of war within us in addition to the war between the species, that's really going to be central to what this story's about. It's going to take Caesar into uncomfortable places that he's never been before and really test him. It could, I think, be the most emotional story yet, a really powerful story, but also a really thrilling and epic story".
He also takes to heart the criticisms about the lack of female characters: "It's something that we definitely are thinking about moving forward. I always try to think about "what is the right story?" and the characters come out of that, so it is a perspective that we are definitely trying to keep in mind as we plan out the next one".
Finally, he commented on the recent concept art for "Rise" that would have ended the movie with the Statue of Liberty. Though some people are in a hurry to connect to the original POTA movie, he feels it would've nipped in the bud what's interesting about these new movies and "it's totally unnecessary". He sez there's "zero" chance the statue will make an appearance in Apes 3.

.html.html I haven't picked it up yet... It's set after the events of DAWN isn't it? Sort of a sequel?

I agree with you that it's confusing about that name: Since it's not an adaption, I don't know why they'd do that, but then again they did it with the "Firestorm" novel too (titled it DOTPOTA and subtitled it "Firestorm")...

Based on the title I thought that this was just going to be an adaptation of the movie, but it isn't really. Thoughts?

Not to crazy about the art style, but I've seen worse. Might just be a matter of taste.

.html.html There was an article about the DAWN miniseries... I don't know if you read it or not when it first appeared, but in case you missed it, here it is:

Time to check the deals on the "Dawn" blu-ray in the Sunday paper.
Sometimes stores have exclusive docs or footage for the big releases. That doesn't look to be the case. All the extras are in the general release. Any exclusives are just packaging. So what's the choice?
Walmart: their exclusive looks to be a "Rise"/"Dawn" 2-pack.
Best Buy: they've become the "metalpak" kings with a nice metal case. But their exclusive cover art is kinda bland (black and white of the familiar Caesar image). It also looks like their metalpak is only for the 3D version (which includes a blu-ray for those who don't have a 3D system).
Target: They were offering a NECA Classic POTA gorilla figure with the blu-ray but they aren't advertising it here. Might be only with preorders and not in stores.
Then of course there's the big Caesar head collection for about $100 but that doesn't seem exclusive to anybody.
In short, it doesn't look like it matters where you buy it but that's not always the case.
                "Dawn" goes blu on Tuesday.

Here's a look at the Caesar Head blu-ray set. Is it worth the dough or is it a "bust"? Dunno, I grabbed the Best Buy steelbox before they sold out and it's a beauty. On to the blu-ray!

The first trailer for the new "Terminator" franchise has hit and once again Jason "Malcolm" Clarke is humanity's last hope. This trailer also reminds me of "Dawn" thanx to the same trailer music. '90's POTA movie star-in-waiting Ah-nuld Whatshisname is also back but he told us he would be.
