Also, NECA has said there's no further plans for "Dawn of the POTA" figures. Makes sense, what more could they do with it that's realistic financially? The first series scratched the itch. We'll
see what Apes 3 offers (probably more nekid apes).

Yes, I'll try to give a heads up as soon as I find out anything regarding the Series 3 figures (Caesar, Gorilla, and Aldo)...
And as far as Julius goes, it looks like he's been held back for Series 4... From what I read, that "Buy an APE day" thing they had a couple weeks back was met with some success, at least as far as online
retailers go: Hopefully that will keep the sales momentum going so they do indeed issue Series 4 (and beyond!)...

It looks like Fox is planning a new "Alien
Nation" movie (with their successful new POTA films as a model). So how long
will it be before POTA and AN hit the screen together in one of those "shared
universes" Hollywood is digging for their franchises (Fox led the way with their
"Alien vs. Predator" movies). I kid, I kid! Fox would be crazy to dilute their
well-regarded Ape movies right now. But down the road...
Long before the starship Enterprise landed on the
POTA in comics, the "Alien Nation" folks paid a visit in the early '90's. Even
though the idea was dubious, at the time I was eager for whatever POTA scraps
were thrown my way. And the "Alien Nation" TV show was acclaimed for it's look
at some of the same themes POTA had tackled so it seemed like a good match. But
it stunk and we moved on. Almost a quarter century later both properties are
back in Fox's stable so don't say I didn't warn you.

I've been trying to piece together a tribute to
the late Booth Colman (Zauis on the TV show) but it's tough with a LONG career
of stage and bit parts. But I found this episode of "The Veil" that features
Booth, as well as host Boris Karloff. Booth was friends with Karloff and his
wife Evie (who met during Maurice Evans' production of "Hamlet" that Booth
played Guildenstern in; Boris was a backer, Evie was Maurice's assistant). This
show "The Veil" was made in 1958 by famed producer Hal Roach but wasn't
aired because there weren't enough episodes. A decade later it was made into
some TV movies. But it predates Karloff's more famous "Thriller". I've been
trying to scope out the highlights of Booth's career instead of just a laundry
list of credits.

I met him at a comic con in Toronto in 2006 (the same con at which I met almost the entire "Revolution on the PotA" comic creative team). I had Herb sign some of my Marvel mags with his PotA art.
It brought a smile to his face seeing some of his more obscure stuff.
Not only was he a nice guy but when I pointed out a friend of mind in a wheelchair in back line to meet him he not only told my buddy to get ahead of the line, but also drew him a quick Hulk sketch.
I've met many people in the comics biz that are just the nicest people in the world and Herb was definitely one of them. He will be missed. Dario

This week in Vegas is the splashy CinemaCon, in
which the studios court NATO (the National Association of Theater Owners). They
show footage from their biggies for the year and give hints about future movies.
Celebs and directors abound. Today Tom Cruise showed up (yes, THAT Tom Cruise!!)
stumping for "Mission: Impossible 5".
POTA has a history with NATO. Arthur Jacobs,
showman that he is, created special presentations for both POTA and "Beneath",
which included rare footage.
With the next POTA over two years away
obviously we're not going to get anything big but it would be groovy if they let
slip the title of Apes 3 so we don't have to call it, well, Apes 3. Jim
Gianopulos, the top banana at Fox, is slated to get the Pioneer Award tomorrow
(Ape-ril 22nd) and Fox's presentation is on Thursday.

Sad news that Andrew Lesnie has died of a
reported heart attack at 59. Probably he's best known as the creator of the
"WETA look", working with Peter Jackson on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy,
"King Kong" and recently on "The Hobbit" trilogy. That's probably the reason he
also did "Rise of the POTA", which rested on whether WETA's FX would work.
Lesnie's experience with them (and with Andy Serkis) probably gave some
confidence to the backers, and I felt "Rise" had a similar look to those Jackson
films. By "Dawn" they could breathe easier about the FX and a new director
brought on a new cinematographer.
Lesnie photographed some of the most beloved
epics of recent years and I think put his stamp on their visuals.
R.I.P.

Collider.com (a good site I trust) sez they've
heard "from sources" that Fox is leaning towards the title "War of the POTA".
This title has been rumored for a while (imdb, etc.) but I don't like it IF
it's true. I could go for "War FOR the POTA" and get away from the 2 "of the"s .
"War For" would also be a nice nod to "Battle For the POTA".
The director has said the title he wuz thinking
of would be one word less than "Dawn of the POTA" (like "Beneath the POTA"). So
I would take this title with a grain of salt for now. If sources are hearing a
title it might be that Fox has picked one and will announce it soon. The
director has said he hopes to film the movie toward the end of the year for
Summer 2017 release.

dude). J. J. Abrams picked Serkis to be his actor/motion capture
expert after a very early screening of "Dawn of the POTA" given by his close pal

might finally dethrone James (almost POTA) Cameron from the top of the box

With 2015 almost half over, it seemed safe to
finalize how "Dawn of the POTA" did in 2014. All the "American
Sniper"s-come-lately have been tallied, so let's see how "Dawn" did.
DOMESTIC (U.S. and Canada):
Every year has it's surprises and certainly
"American Sniper" was one of them. It really was a 2015 movie but it had a
limited run in 2014 to qualify for the Oscars so technically it's a 2014 film.
And as such, it knocked "Dawn" out of the Top 10. It's incredible success was
wild and while people were divided about it's merits, the fact that an "R"-rated
drama could rub shoulders with the big boys does help the industry consider
making more and perhaps increase the budgets. Uncomfy dramas are
important.
1. "American Sniper" - $350 million
2. "Hunger Games 3" - $337 m.
3. "Guardians of the G" - $333 m.
4. "Cap 2" - $260 m.
5. "LEGO" - $258 m.
6. "Hobbit 3" - $255 m.
7. "Transformers 4" - $245 m.
8. "Maleficent" - $241 m.
9. "X-Men 5" - $234 m.
10. "Big Hero 6" - $223 m.
11. "Dawn of the POTA" - $209 m.
WORLDWIDE:
2014 became well known as a down year, with only
one blockbuster to pass $1 billion (2015 has already had 2, with more almost
certain to come). These days, with the importance of foreign markets, it can be
pretty much predicted at the beginning of the year what the Top 10 will look
like. There's always surprises and some movies don't perform as expected
(usually because they suck, the great unknown until a movie arrives). But
generally in these franchise-crazed times, the Top 10 is the usual suspects. All
I can say is I'm glad POTA is now one of the usual suspects and I hope it
continues.
1. "Transformers" - $1 billion
2. "Hobbit 3" - $955 m.
3. "Guardians of the Galaxy" - $774
m.
4. "Maleficent" - $758 m.
5. "Hunger Games 3" - $752 m.
6. "X-Men 5" - $748 m.
7. "Capt. America 2" - $715 m.
8. "Spidey" - $709 m.
9. "Dawn of the POTA" - $708.8 m.
10. "Interstellar" - $673 m.

Today (June 20) is the 40th anniversary of the
release of "Jaws". What does that have to do with POTA? Well, there is a big
connection to me. I became an Apes fan with the TV show in late 1974. It didn't
last long but it stayed in my mind long after. "Jaws" came out the next summer
and was my next passion. "Jaws" was HUGE! 40 years later we're so spoiled by FX
extravaganzas but come on! The craftsmanship of POTA and "Jaws" were rare then.
Both were "bad animal" movies with top notch FX, early works by movie composers
who would become legend (Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, respectively) and
both owed their existence to Richard Zanuck. The main boosters for POTA were
Arthur Jacobs and Mort Abrahams, without whose persistence the movie wouldn't
have been possible. But still, Zanuck was the only studio head willing to listen
and eventually give the green light.
When Zanuck got the boot from Fox, he took his
Fox cohort David Brown and they started producing their own movies ("The Sting",
the John Chambers-centric "Sssss"). One of their biggest early successes was
rolling the dice on young Steven Spielberg with "Sugarland Express". While doing
that, Spielberg saw the galleys for the book "Jaws" that Zanuck/Brown had bought
and the rest is history. An interesting side note is that "Jaws" might have
starred Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison. Heston was definitely in the mix
until Spielberg decided a movie star would distract people from the story. As
for the role of Sheriff Brody's wife, it came down to Zanuck's wife (Linda
Harrison) or the head of Universal's wife Lorraine Gary . Gary won and to be
honest I can't imagine "Jaws" without Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary; Spielberg
was right.
There have been many "Jaws" docs over the years
but once again I'll mention "The Shark Is Working". Made by a bunch of "Jaws"
fans, I think it foreshadowed what we're seeing now with Kickstarter where fans
are making their own docs and other fans are paying for them. Personally, I
enjoy the work of fans more than the slick work done by the studios to promote
their stuff. I remember posting here about the doc, which was finished but
couldn't be shown because they didn't have the rights to the "Jaws" clips. I
thought the obvious thing was to put it on a DVD release of "Jaws" and that's
eventually what was done. I just watched it again before writing this and it's
just a blast. POTA has a terrific doc called "Behind the POTA" but I would love
to see a doc similar to "The Shark" about the impact of POTA and how the fans
have carried it on. Obviously people think of sci-fi when they think of rabid
fans. Even as a fan of "Jaws" I never thought there were pilgrimages to Martha's
Vineyard and all the stuff in the doc. It's a lot of fun.
One of the main reasons I brought the doc
up here was the late Percy Rodrigues. They interviewed him as well as many
others who are no longer with us (Roy Scheider was nice to narrate the doc).
POTA fans know Percy as Aboro on the POTA TV show. But he became quite the voice
of movie trailers in the '70's and "Jaws" was perhaps his most memorable.
As director Kevin Smith sez: "(Percy) was the gateway for a lot of people into
the "Jaws" universe. He was like the weed to what would become the crack of
Jaws".
So, I can't help but think of POTA and Jaws as
bros. Obviously they have different messages: Jaws' goal is to kill the animal
(it's creator Peter Benchley spent the rest of his life trying to save sharks
and give them a better reputation) while POTA has "bad animals" but it also has
good ones to balance it out. In the end POTA probably carries more weight but
"Jaws" has a lot to say about the human condition. They will both be the
ultimate loves of my childhood, so thank you "Jaws" and Happy
Anniversary.

It's Al's birthday but he takes the cake anyway.
He's counted down to the release of 3 POTA movies either on websites or twitter
and keeps fans up to date from a variety of angles. Now he's already gone into
battle for "War" (of the POTA):
He's also got the new "Star Wars" movie going, so
he's got both the life-long friends Matt Reeves and J. J. Abrams covered (both
using Andy Serkis for their nefarious purposes).
It's been a blast following his efforts for 15
years, and he's still only 25. Correction: 26. Happy

Today is exactly 2 years before the next POTA
movie is scheduled to hit (7/14/17). No one has denied the rumored title "War of
the POTA" but it hasn't been officially announced yet. Director Matt Reeves
seems to be hanging in there, though he would be only the second director ever
to do 2 POTA movies. It's pretty much assumed this one will end Caesar's story
as a trilogy before moving into the future (put some clothes on those
apes!).
Judging from the title it's safe to assume the
stakes are pretty high in this one. Reeves has said it's going to be epic and a
tough shoot. Though it was 3 years between "Rise" and "Dawn" they lost a year by
switching directors. If Reeves gets the full 3 years with no snags it'll be the
longest production time an Apes movie has ever had (certainly a far cry from the
"movie a year" pace of the originals). Reeves has said he hopes to shoot by the
end of the year. The apes should look better than ever, not only because of the
enhanced post-production time, but also because "Dawn" was a work in progress of
new techniques that they have now mastered (in the DVD commentary Reeves says
that's what WETA explained to him).
As for the story, Reeves sez "given the
trajectory of how (Caesar's) arc has gone from ("Rise") through "Dawn" so
far, what is so exciting to us is that this is sort of his biggest arc yet. We
are going to take him to places that test him in a way that is more painful, and
in ways that he has never been tested before. (We will) test his leadership, and
more than that his heart and soul. There are ways in which the experience he had
with Koba in the last film really creates a context in this story that is going
to be, in a way, his greatest challenge yet. We are very excited about
it...
"(We) know that war is not avoided by the end of
"Dawn". That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with,
where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever, wanted to
deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of
it. The things that happen in (this) story test him in huge ways, in the ways in
which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It's going to be an epic
story... This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a
seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status.
He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses". (JoBlo.com, Dec.
2014)
Take that as you will.

Dario pointed out that the casting announcement
credits Pierre Boulle as the author of the book. I don't think Boulle was
credited in "Rise" or "Dawn". Could it be we're heading toward a more
traditional POTA scenario (Tim Burton's movie credited Boulle and was also more
traditional - ape society and wild humans). With them looking to cast a wild
human girl it makes it sound so. The title makes it sound like the Big War they
were facing at the end of "Dawn" but what if this takes place 20 -30 years later
after the final nail in the human coffin? But still within Caesar's lifetime.
Or maybe it is the final war we're expecting and
the wild girl/Boulle credit refers to an epilogue ("Who knows about the
future?"). Maybe I'm jumping the gun but it's obvious audiences have
had their fill of nekid apes and are ready for a real POTA.
"War of the POTA" is expected to begin filming
Oct. 14 2015. <.html <.html

I know Boulle didn't (in fact couldn't as he only spoke and wrote French) which is exactly my point when I say Wilson and Foreman were robbed.
You'd think the Academy would make reparations for a now obvious huge injustice. I don't blame the Academy as they probably just used the credited names at the time. Even the studio who must have known Boulle
probably didn't write the screenplay may be perceived as doing Wilson a favor by turning a blind eye and letting him still work, albeit uncredited. But knowing what are now long established facts, something should
have been done.
If they managed to honor Eli Kazan who 'named names' (and that probably included Wilson and Foreman), they should themselves be honorable enough to correct the wrongly attributed awards the gave out during
this period.
I have to revisit my Bluray as I don't recall seeing this interview with Wilson's daughter. Dario

Dario, as I understand it, Wilson and Foreman were added to that Academy Award in 1984, though both were unfortunately dead by then. Michael Wilson also won an Oscar for co-writing Lawrence of Arabia
, but only after an enquiry into the writing credits.

I'm pretty sure Boulle was credited on all the films, and the comics for that matter. I think there's a contractual obligation with anything that uses the POTA name, even if it's very far
removed from Boulle's work. (*ahem, Future History Chronicles, ahem, ahem*)

We'll it's a relief that they at least corrected a terrible slight. Unfortunate that he never got to hold his own Oscar. Dario

Just checked. No credit for Boulle on "Rise" or
"Dawn" (in fact, the "Rise" writers get a "created by" credit on "Dawn"). Boulle
gets a mention in POTA2001 on the other end of the film from the
writers.

This article sez "War of the POTA" is set years
after "Dawn", so maybe it will be closer to meat & potatoes POTA. Looks like
the whole shoot is Vancouver. They're not shooting in New Orleans this time so
the old human environs of "Dawn" seem to be out. Has Caesar put his foot down
and crushed that pest called Man once and for all? Will the apes finally take a
bite out of the Big Apple (those maniacs!)? And is there any significance to the
title "Hidden Fortress"?
