Good question.  Elaine brings this up sometimes, too.  I'd like to
think that there are other Ape civilizations.  And probably different
languages and cultures.  Even different beliefs and takes on the
beliefs that exist in Zaius's pod.

Helen

The apes are so similar to us, it is only natural they would like chocolate. I wonder if they ahve different varieties like whit chocolate, dark chocolate etc. Elaine

I have an imagination.
But why should I have to imagine what it is you're
trying to say?  I can't look up a non-existent word.
in a dictionary to see what it is you're trying to
say.  What's really pathetic is people who attack
the person and not the argument.  I'm trying to
evaluate what it is you're putting forth.  If it's
filled with nonsense words, I can only assume
it's nonsense.  Maybe Patrick's stuff is nonsense.
But at least it's extremely well written nonsense.
Attack me if you want.  It's not going to help you
get your point across.  Do you want to defend
your statement using words in the dictionary?
Or do you just want to continue name calling?

OK guys break it up and each go to a neutral corner.

You are both valued members so please try to be civil with each
other. We don't wish to censor people but we don't want flame wars
either. Thanks.

Actually, this choclate thread got me to thinking of imports and exports and the like, and had me wondering if the Apes would engage in sea trade,,,were there any ape sailors?  I know none were shown in the movies and although I am working on archiving the old comics in my group, I havent read most of what I've collected yet.  I like to the idea of old (19th century and before) sailing ships on the seas with a crew of apes....and ape pirates etc etc

The ocean seems to be in the forbidden zone.
And there's no record of them eating fish, so
I don't know why they would go near it.  They
can't swim.  In the TV show they seemed to
have access to the sea.  But they only use
fish for fertilizer for the crops, not food.

Have you looked at the files on my site under "Power Records"? There
are both 75 and 150 DPI PDF and ShockWave files for all of them there.

Actually, he's looking for the sleeve of the 45-sized record that had this story. Your site has the comics of the movie stories as well as MP3s of all the movie and TV stories, but doesn't have scans of the album and record sleeves. I have a scan of the sleeve for this record, but don't have access to it right now. I'll upload it when I get home tonight.

If anyone here can provide good scans of the other two 45-sized records (Battle of Two Worlds and Dawn of the Tree People) I'd appreciate it. I got scans from Michael on those, but he still had them in the shrink-wrap so they need some Photoshop work before I can use them for what I have planned. I want to create CD booklets and labels for both the movie and TV albums. I have the albums, but want to include the art from the 45-sized sleeves as well.

I sure have, and thanks!  The one I am looking for is the 7 in record jacket for the Mountain of the Delphi story - I didn't see that one on your site.  The one copy I have found is a low resolution file from Kassidy Rae's site.  There were higher resolution scans of the other 2 singles there, but the Delphi one was pretty small, and I haven;t been able to find a very good scan of the back either.  Thanks again!

For those who don't want to click on the link, Fox will be releasing a Ultimate Planet of the Apes box set which will contain the original 5 films, the 2001 film, the 1974 TV series and the 1975 animated series, released on commercial DVD for the first time.

Once again, let's soak the fans. www.tvshowsondvd.com reports that soon Fox will release an "ultimate" collection of all the POTA films (including the Burton remake), that's 6 discs, plus the TV show, that's 4 more, plus for the first time, the "Return to the POTA" cartoon, that's 2 more, plus 2 bonus discs of "Behind the POTA" and the extra disc from POTA2001. Yes, a 14 disc set. Looks like there's nothing new for the sequels as fans werre speculating. Are fans going to pay again for all this just to get the cartoons? Not me. If Fox went to the trouble of getting the original version of "Conquest" or something, I'll probably bite. But I doubt they did. So once again a POTA product is designed to soak the fans and it won't do well and they'll say, "See? There's no interest in POTA".
The article reports this is being released to take advantage of the DVD release of Peter Jackson's "King Kong" in late March. And I thought Fox was doing this to make an artistic statement.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet on the chocolate debate, but
the 1977 UK annual's final story, set in TV Series continuity, describes
an Ape group who ge washed ashore in South America, in 'P'ru'.The land
is ruled by humans, which may explain why you don't see many fat Apes
in the series.Maybe sea traders, who historically have always followed
profit not politics, traded the raw supplies north, so that Zira could

It was noted on Digital Bits (www.digitalbits.com) last month that Fox was working on single-disc releases of the sequel films for 3/28. There was no information then on whether the films would be remastered or if there would be any extras (and I've not seen any further information since). I'm hoping they are remastered, or at least anamorphic. If so, and those same remastered/anamorphic discs are used in the Ultimate set, then I'd be inclined to buy the set, assuming I can find a really good discount and figure out a way to tell my wife that I want to buy my 6th copy of the original Planet (following 1 VHS, two LDs, the Evolution set DVD and the 35th Anniversary DVD).

Not me, either.  Especially since we have a good quality set of the

I'll be getting this just to get the sequels in anamorphic, but I expect that the quality of the cartoons will be better than anything that's bootleg.  The source should be the original negatives.

I doubt we'll get anything new in the way of extras, and that includes an extended BATTLE, but "Who knows about the future?"

What's really bothering me is the inclusion of POTA2001.  Lawgiver help us!

PLEASE fellas at Fox--there is NO reason to re-market the TV series or
expecially APES 2001.This is not an item aimed at the "casual
buyer".The fans have this stuff and they know it.No extended Battle?
Did they even LOOK for CONQUEST deleted scenes. There is an excellent
chance they exist
somewhere.APJAC would not have detroyed them and they WERE included at
a
preview showing,so an extended print would probably still exist in
35mm.I agree with a previous post that this debacle will
give POTA a bad sales rep...yet again.Just put the cartoon
series/remasters out individually
and release the 5 films in anamorphic with extras. And how about
contacting the authors of PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED (one of them
would be me) and try to add some of the incredible wealth of
photos, documents and images you KNOW exist simply by reading our
book,as extras.tsk tsk tsk--If APJAC knew how Fox would treat his
franchise,he
NEVER would have sold it lock, stock an barrell. That was his biggest

Maybe there is a reason. FOX have the original uncut, unedited  prints from all 6 movies and with the release of the cartoon series which I can't wait to get my hands on. A friend told me at work that the ultimate ape collection is going to be place in a large ape head. But I think that this could be something bigger like maybe a new POTA movie!!

It's possible the cartoons and the sequels will be available separately, at the same time or down the road. I remember when Fox released the "Alien Quadrilogy" you had to buy all 4 movies as a set. A short time later you could buy the movies separately (many didn't want the last 2 movies, despite great extras). And what's Fox going to do for the 40th anniversary in 2 years (besides Hi Def)? - - - Jeff

Not me, either.  Especially since we have a good quality set of the
'toons already.

If it's anything like that Ape Head their offering in Britain they can keep it!
It looked worse than that first Zira Apemania did.  I'd rather have the
Spaceship, with the lights, like they have in Japan.  Now that was cool.

"You're no seeker.  You're negative"

Anyway, the article's details are fuzzy.  It says, "The first films and the remake movie will each have a bonus disc," but the next line is, "We're told that the discs for the six films (remake included), the four discs for the live-action series, and the two bonus DVDs (one being "Behind the Planet of the Apes") are all apparently the exact same discs as the ones which have been released previously."  So which is it?

This is supposed to be a 14 disc collection, but if all the films had bonus discs that would be the total number of discs would be 18 discs.  So, I think there will only be two bonus discs, and those are going to be the ones from the 35th Anniversary edition and the 2001 debacle.

The article also says that the TV series will be on discs 11 and 12, so does that mean the two bonus discs are 13 and 14?  I guess so.

I can't imagine that Fox would be stupid enough to put out the sequels again in the old non-anamorphic transfers, OR that they'd put them out with the old menu screens, since the discs then wouldn't match those of the original's 35th Anniversary edition discs.  I would think that they'd come up with new menus and new images on the sequel discs themselves.  But, who knows!

Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Joe, if you're going to wait until Fox contacts you, you'll be waiting until apes rule the earth!

Joe Russo has a MASSIVE collection of POTA images, including behind-the-scenes photos from BENEATH that Fox doesn't own.  He should get them transferred to DVD himself and sell them to fans.

As for the stuff from the films themselves that's probably still in the vaults, well... if POTA was as big as "Star Trek," we'd have had it by now, but it's NOT and that's that.  "You get used to that and hang onto it, or you might as well be dead."

Oh, and by the way, Rod Serling also sold the rights to "Twilight Zone" to CBS, which then went and made millions on it.  Roddenberry did the same thing with "Star Trek," sold it to Paramount.  They've made all the money.  Must have been the thing to do in the Sixties.

There's an update on tvshowsondvd.com this morning regarding the packaging and the content of the Ultimate Apes DVD set. Release date has changed to 3/28 to coincide with the Kong DVD release. Also packaging will be in an ape head and it will be a limited edition. The ape head may or may not be the same as the upcoming Region 2 release, which is pictured in the article. The sequel films will be anamorphic. Doesn't look like we get any new movie extras, but some of the extras from the 35th anniversary disc that were specific to Escape and Conquest are being added to the discs for those movies.

Looking at the disc content listing it appears that some extras will be added to the TV series discs. All four discs list TV spots and still photos as extras. The current TV series release has no extras.

Here's the link to the article:

The set is also available to pre-order from Amazon for $125.99.

If you have a widescreen (16x9) TV, the film image fills the screen. If the film is just letterboxed, with black bars on the top and bottom, those black bars are part of the video signal from the DVD and you wind up seeing the film smaller on your TV than would otherwise be possible.

No, although I have seen some 16x9 HD TVs in showrooms with distorted pictures. In those cases the TVs weren't set properly.

If you have a normal TV an anamorphic DVD will look just like a regular letterboxed movie. But if you have a 16x9 HD TV an anamorphic DVD will let you take full advantage of the screen dimensions.

I actually don't have to go far to do this, as I think that is the set
that we have. I'll check. But in the meantime, I haven't paid much
attention to it. I don't watch TV much. And as far as morphic vs
anamorphic goes, I just set the screen so that it looks best with no
fat, stretched out people. I'll have to suss it out to see what I can
    learn.

You DO NOT have to get an HD TV to enjoy the APES movies in 16x9.  These new transfers will be anamorphic, but they won't be in HD.  That will have to wait until HD or Blue Ray DVD transfers.

But you can enjoy these anamorphic transfers on a 16x9 standard display.  Just make sure you DVD player has "progressive scan" and you'll see it as nearly HD.  Most 16x9 standard displays, whether tube sets, LCDs or Plasmas, are "HD ready" which means that later you can add an HD tuner to them.

Anyway, it all comes down to spending the money, but you can now get yourselves a really nice 16x9 display for less than $2000, maybe even lower than $1000 if you really look.

Believe me, you get that baby home and start watching the APES movies in 16x9 and progressive, and you won't want to leave the house for a week!

During the part of the film where the mutants are trying to defeat the gorilla army with their illusions, listen to the sound when Mendez is asked "What will you do?" and he replies "Everything possible."  In the background you can hear the music for the apes march start before they cut to that scene.

I hope they fix that because it's been in every transfer I've ever watched.

    .html
For the past several months, I've been working with another POTA fan trying to compile all of the APES radio spots, promos, etc. If you aren't aware, radio promo spots were released on 7" vinyl back in the day and played during commercial breaks. So far, we have spots for BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST, and BATTLE. There has been no luck in finding them for PLANET though. Additionally, we'd like to compile all the Apes related music that's come out over the years i.e. the Lalo Schifrin 7" single that was released to promote the TV series, the two tracks recorded by The Jeff Wayne Space Shuttle that came out on that "Theme from Star Trek, Theme From Planet of the Apes" kids LP that came out years ago (second record down: http://www.record-revival.com/crates.htm), the obscure POTA: A Musical Journey, and so forth. I have the two Schifrin tracks since they were recently released on CD, but that's about it aside from the film and TV soundtracks.

If anyone out there has any radio spots or other rare APES audio (such as POTA: A Musical Journey), let me know. Once this is completed (and admittedly, that's a ways down the road), we'll figure out a way to distribute it so anyone who's interested can get a copy.

    Thanks,

You get to see a couple of the actors out of the Ape makeup that you

Subject: Lalo Schifrin MOST WANTED 1968-1979
    .html
    More info here: http://www.dougpayne.com/mwnotes.htm

Lalo Schifrin MOST WANTED 1968-1979 is of interest to Apes fans for the
inclusion of the two tracks from the 7" single (Ape Shuffle/Escape From
Tomorrow) released in 1974 to promote the TV series. Both are original
compositions, and in fact 'Ape Shuffle' was also included on a LP I
remember a friend having back in the 70's (the elsewhere mentioned "Theme
from Star Trek/Theme from POTA"), though I'm pretty sure on that album it
was called 'Ape Victory Dance'. Neither song on MOST WANTED really has
much to do with any of the music you hear in the series, though there's a
brief (albeit modified) snippet of the opening theme in 'Escape From
Tomorrow' (the time warp sound effect). As a matter of fact, 'Ape
Shuffle' is really kind of goofy when you get right down to it- what with
the people making "ooo ooo eee eee" fake ape noises and the like. Fun to
listen to, but in a novelty sort of way.

In a broader sense, this album is indicative of the trend in the 70's to
take certain well known musical themes, rerecord them with a full
orchestra, and then release them on an unsuspecting public. Case in
point: 'Theme From Jaws', which takes the two-note theme that we all know
and love and buries it underneath a rather lush arrangement of
instruments (both rock and orchestral) for about 4 to 5 minutes.
Honestly, I didn't even realize what it was until I looked at the credits
on the back of the disc. Themes from other 70's films are included as
well (Dirty Harry, Rollercoaster, Enter The Dragon), but they sure don't
sound the way I remember them. As you would imagine, there's a heavy
funk/disco influence on a lot of these tracks, and that chucka-wucka
guitar sound Issac Hayes popularized with "Shaft" is all over the place.

BTW, 'Enter The Dragon' also has goofy voices in the background
    ("hi-YAAA!!", "aa-SAAA!!",).

On the positive side, since this is a Germany only release it occurred to
me to look on www.ebay.de and see if I could get it for a descent price
since the importers here in the States were pulling the "RARE!! LIMITED
EDITION IMPORT!! ONLY $34.99" crap. I got it from a regular seller, air
mail shipping from Germany included, for under $20.

It's the hair that ruins it.
That's usually where Apemania fall down too.
It would cost thousands to get the quality of

"Radio spots."  Look at it this way, it'll give you another project to occupy your time with.

I hope they fix that because it's been in every transfer I've ever watched<<

    Rory,

I've noticed that (and more) as well. I believe it's just a sound bleed over from the different elements being spliced together as opposed to a glitch that happened when the films were being prepared for VHS rerelease in the mid 80's. I'd have to check my old audio cassettes to be sure though.

I've included an excerpt of a piece I wrote detailing all the sound FX differences over the years. For the record, the "original" version of BENEATH with all the unaltered sound effects is the one that I watched (and recorded) for years and years on The 4:30 Movie, which also happens to be the same as the original VHS release of BENEATH (which I also own) on Magnetic Video.

**Some of the sound effects that appeared in the original TV broadcast and home video version of BENEATH have been tinkered with over the years on subsequent video releases (and the versions that appeared on television) starting in 1985. Two of them are minor (the removal of the sound of Brent sipping waters from his hands, and later when he's moving his hands through the water fountain in front of the Cathedral). One major change though is the scene where Brent & Nova come upon the underground tunnel that they have to climb up a ladder to. In the original version of the film, Brent touches the ladder and the hum stops, but you can still hear the whooshing of the air being sucked in (which makes sense, because the tunnel is part air vent). Starting with the 1985 home video release, the sound of the rushing air is removed and replaced with complete silence. I know the original script called for this to happen, but it really doesn't make any sense seeing as how they're near an air vent. I always thought the sound effect of the rushing air was intentionally put in to make more logical sense. Every version shown on television since the Playhouse Video release in 1985 has included these three alterations.

The other major change has to do with the scene of the bleeding Lawgiver in the desert. In the 1985 home video version, the sound FX are completely messed up (you hear the sound of the statue falling and the explosion AFTER the illusion has already disappeared. This was somewhat corrected in the 1990 (and subsequent) home video versions, but the original sound effects aren't quite the same. The sounds of the gorilla soldiers screaming in the desert and the fall/explosion of the stature aren't as full as they were in the original. Obviously, someone made a conscious decision to make the changes. Starting in the early to mid 90's, the semi-corrected version has been broadcast on television**

I've always been curious as to how all that happened. Does anyone think it'd be a worthwhile project to transfer the original VHS version onto DVD?

Like Dave, I remember the animated series being shown over here---it
was on at about 4:30 in the evening.I remember being in a state of
shock over seeing Apes in trucks! As a kid, the animation didn't seem
crude as such--I just couldn't cope with those trucks! John, Scrolls.
