I've always been curious as to how all that happened.

It's because the sequels were all originally mono films.  However, the studio keeps separate soundtrack tapes of the dialogue, sound effects and music.  These elements were given over to a company called "Chase Productions" that creates stereo soundtracks for films originally in mono.  The quality of their work varies.  There are supposed to be sound effects missing from CONQUEST that were in the original mix, at least on the old laserdisc version.

PLANET was originally produced in stereo, but the story goes that Fox lost the stereo tracks long ago.  What we have not is a stereo reconstruction.  However, since the musical score has survived in true stereo, what we hear now on the 35th Anniversary sounds pretty good.  Still, I think the music isn't quite as loud as it was in the original mix.

The disc label covers are a bit disappointing.  The ape head actually looks pretty good, except for too much hair.  I wish it were Dr. Zaius though.

own a 16mm 30 sec. TV spot for PLANET, which is like a condensed version of
the trailer.  I suspect that the radio spots for PLANET were little more than
the soundtracks from the TV commercial spots.  So, what I'd do is just record
the audio from the trailer, including the teaser trailer on the 35th
Anniversary DVD, and then with some creative editing make up 30 sec. and 60 sec.
"Radio spots."  Look at it this way, it'll give you another project to occupy your time with. <<

Actually, the radio spots were quite different from the theatrical teasers and trailers. What's interesting about these ads is the fact that they don't use any of the music from each respective film, but rather stock music of the time. There's also a lot of intentional "weird" sci-fi sounds, and the narrators aren't the same people from the film trailers (which strikes me as strange because it seems to me that Fox would want to use the same people consistently- to save money if nothing else). There are a few audio clips from the films ("The only good human is a dead human", "and that day is upon you, now!!") and the text is taken from the trailers ("What lies Beneath may be the end", "...in the annals of Science Fiction", "Now, the final Chapter in the epic series that made..."). Other than that, they're quite different from their 35mm counterparts.

Is the teaser trailer on the 35th Anniversary DVD the actual teaser, or just the same trailer that's been included on other releases over the years (i.e. the 30th Anniversary editions)?

BTW, do you have a way to transfer 16mm film to any type of current media? I have a small bumper from the ABC Movie of the Week (back from the 70's) that I'm currently unable to view. No idea what's on it, though I've always been curious.

The sequels are optional extras, but Planet is the

BTW, do you have a way to transfer 16mm film to any type of current media? I have a small bumper from the ABC Movie of the Week (back from the 70's) that I'm currently unable to view. No idea what's on it, though I've always been curious.

There are places that will do it for you, though they might not with stuff they think is copyrighted.  I simply projected, back when I had a 16mm projector, the film on the screen and shot it with a video camera.  Not perfect but it worked OK.

After what you've told me about the radio spots I've lost all interest.  The sound like they're awful.

the audio from the trailer, including the teaser trailer on the 35th

    Jerry Goldsmith Biography Update

As most of you know Carrie Goldsmith, Jerry's daughter, began the mammoth task of writing a biography about her father shortly before his untimely death in 2004. Carrie is now in the final stages of her first draft and hopes to have a completed version of the book at the end of January.

Carrie plans to setup a special website to promote her book and post excerpts from it for fans to get a taste of what is to come. The site should be active within about 8 weeks and I will of course post details as soon as I have them.

I am sure all Jerry Goldsmith fans will want to wish her luck in these final stages of what will no doubt be a fascinating book.

    .html
    .html
www.tvshowsondvd.com continues to be the place for updates on the new "Apes" collection. In the last two updates they've shown what the set will look like (no separate boxes) and now they quote a Fox spokesperson from an industry article that the cartoons WILL be sold separately. So all of you slaves don't have to buy everything again. Personally, I'd rather have everything in separate boxes than linked together in a funky ape head.
For those who haven't heard, the sequels are being released anamorphic and with improved sound like the 35th anniversary treatment of the original. Overall, it's a nice little advertisement for POTA. I apologize to Fox for thinking the cartoons were a trap to sell more DVDs.  - - - Jeff

Interesting info. I wonder if the missing stuff from BENEATH (the

      some post-post-post Production editing?

With CONQUEST, are you saying that the sound effects were on the original
1991 LD and then lost afterwards, or lost by the time that it was
released on LD in 1991 (which would be after two different VHS releases).

That's the whole idea of the project Rory- to give everyone the
opportunity to hear them. I have the spots for BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST,
and BATTLE on CDR, Bruce is working on getting the PLANET spots
transferred, and there's a few other items of interest that hopefully can
be added (the interview vinyl for CONQUEST, for example). Plus we (may)
include some of the music "inspired by" POTA (like the stuff I mentioned
in my previous post) and put it all on one CD, which will then be made
available to anyone who's interested. Afterwards, including it in the
files section would certainly be an option as well.

      More info as things progress.

at least the animated  series discs, two things might happen. One, the
animated series might not sell, and the studio will say'See?Apes has no
demand!'.Two, the studio might get shitty and say that fan produced
stuff is bad for the franchise and must be stopped.Anybody who can
afford to should at least think about buying the animated series, I
      think. John, Scrolls.

Ok, you all know what you have to do.  On the day these videos come out, you MUST go to every store in your area, perhaps even your state, and buy EVERY copy they have.  The Lawgiver commands you!

      I'm interested.

I'm not sure.  I think it may go back to the 1995 Playhouse video transfers.  Let's just keep our fingers crossed that everything will be perfect with the new transfers.

Subject: Offical APES specs are in!
      .html
      .html.htmlFrom www.thedigitalbits.com:

We have the official skinny from 20th Century Fox on their upcoming celebration of all things Planet of the Apes on DVD. The centerpiece of the affair will be the 3/28 release of the 14-disc, THX-certified Planet of the Apes: The Ultimate DVD Collection (SRP $179.98). Here's a disc by disc list of the extras, as confirmed by the studio:

Disc One - Planet of the Apes (1967 - anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 5.1 audio, audio commentary by composer Jerry Goldsmith, commentary by actors Roddy McDowell, Natalie Trundy and Kim Hunter, and make-up artist John Chambers, text commentary by Eric Greene, author of Planet of the Apes as American Myth ) - note that this is the same as Disc One from the 35th Anniversary Edition.

Disc Two - Planet of the Apes Bonus Disc (includes the 1998 Behind the Planet of the Apes documentary, trailers for all of the classic Apes films, promo spots, a make-up test with Edward G. Robinson from 1966, Roddy McDowall's original home movies, dailies and outtakes, the 1967 N.A.T.O. presentation, 4 vintage featurettes (Planet of the Apes, A Look Behind the Planet of the Apes, Don Taylor Directs Escape from the Planet of the Apes and J. Lee Thompson Directs Conquest of the Planet of the Apes), original film reviews and galleries of poster art, production photos and costume sketches) - note that this is the same as Disc Two from the 35th Anniversary Edition and is also the same basic content as was included on Image Entertainment's Behind the Planet of the Apes: Special Collector's Edition.

Disc Three - Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical trailers for this and all of the other Apes films and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery) - same extras as on the previous release.

Disc Four - Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical trailers for this and all of the other Apes films and the Don Taylor Directs Escape from the Planet of the Apes featurette).

Disc Five - Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical trailers for this and all of the other Apes films and the J. Lee Thompson Directs Conquest of the Planet of the Apes featurette).

Disc Six - Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical trailers for this and all of the other Apes films and the Fox Interactive's Behind the Scenes of the Planet of the Apes videogame promo).

Discs Seven-Ten - Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series (1974 - includes all 14 episodes in the original full frame video with Dolby Digital mono audio, plus photo galleries and TV spots) - this is basically the same as the previous 4-disc DVD release of the TV series, but the photo galleries and TV spots are new to this edition.

Discs Eleven-Twelve - Return to the Planet of the Apes: The Complete Animated Series (1975 - includes all 13 episodes in their original full frame video with Dolby Digital mono audio).

Disc Thirteen - Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001 - anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio, plus extras) - note that this is identical to Disc One of the previous DVD release of this film.

Disc Fourteen - Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes Bonus Disc (with additional extras) - note that this is identical to Disc Two of the previous DVD release of this film.

As you can see, what's new in
The Ultimate DVD Collection are the new anamorphic transfers of the four classic Apes films that have previously been available in letterboxed widecreen only, along with the complete animated TV series (its first appearance on DVD and exclusive to The Ultimate DVD Collection ) and a couple new extras on the 1974 live-action TV series. All of this comes with a special "ape" display case designed to replicate the original mask designs from the classic films. This is the kind of packaging that Fox has previously released in Japan only (with I, Robot and The Alien Quadrilogy ), so you've got to at least give the studio credit for making it available to U.S. fans as well (expensive though it is). Here's a picture of the packaging...

For those not quite ready to part with $180, Fox is also releasing a 6-disc
Planet of the Apes: The Legacy Boxset (SRP $49.98), which will include all five of the original Apes films, along with a bonus disc containing the Behind the Planet of the Apes documentary, trailers for all of the other Apes films and the Fox Interactive's Behind the Scenes of the Planet of the Apes videogame promo. We believe the classic films will all be the newly remastered anamorphic widescreen versions.

And for those simply wanting to add the later films to their libraries in better quality one at a time,
Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of Planet of the Apes and Escape from the Planet of the Apes will all be re-released as stand-alone versions on 3/28 as well (SRP $14.98 each). These will each be the same as the movie discs contained in The Ultimate Collection, with newly remastered anamorphic widescreen video and the same extras.

Finally, just for kicks, Fox will release Tim Burton's
Planet of the Apes on UMD format for Sony's PSP on 3/28 as well (SRP $19.98). Whew!

I think everyone should prepare themselves for this.  I suspect there's a good reason why we'll never get an offical release of the extended version.  The original theatrical version is the offical US version.  The extended version may only be allowed to run on television and cable in this country.

I don't know, but it could be somekind of crazy legal situation like that.

Or.... Fox feels it's better to just keep holding on to the extended version for yet another release of DVDs in the future.  Who knows?

        That would be another reason.

I was also talking to Joe Russo about it and he feels those sequences were cut with a specific intent, and that Arthur P. Jacobs approved of them.  In fact, ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE were more "produced" by Frank Capra Jr. than they were by Jacobs, since Jabobs had become more of an executive producer by that time.  Capra is still alive and he's the one who would most directly know why those scenes were cut and if the theatrical version is the one that was meant as "canon."

It's all very strange because a lot of editing that was done on BATTLE was to try and make the film "work," which director J. Lee Thompson felt it didn't.  He thought the movie was a mess because the script wasn't very good when they started.  After he finished editing it he found the film was too short, so longer film clips from ESCAPE and CONQUEST were added to the prologue in order to pad the running time.  You have to wonder why the cut scenes weren't just put back in?  I guess someone felt strongly that they stay out.

I find the cut scenes not involving the bomb, some of them just extensions of existing scenes, really enhancing the film, but the bomb scenes themselves don't really do much for me.  It's a subplot that isn't fully developed.  It seems just thrown in there.  If it had been developed further, you know, making us wonder all during the last third of the film if it all would be blown to hell, then I think it would have added a layer of tension to the movie that the final version really lacks, but as Thompson said, "It was a mess."

So, I'm not too upset if the extended version never replaces the theatrical cut.  Either way it remains the same movie -- a not very good one.

Now, the original preview version of CONQUEST... that would be something different, but we'll probably never see it.

have always been a mystery. I've always wondered why the Bomb
subplot was included promotional materials such as the Lobby Cards

I bought a killer little record player with built-in speakers from Crosley. Comes in a tweed
case. Audio-out so I burned some old LPs to CD.

Yeah I have a lot of albums and 45s that have never been released on CD that I've never recorded yet. Maybe after this APES project is finished.

I couldn't either, but I believe it was just a link to another article

        Hello everyone,

I'm making a documentary film about action figure collectors, and POTA is
of course an important aspect of the craft. I'm looking for collectors of
POTA figs (especially vintage) in and around Minneapolis/ St Paul to
        interview.

I'm an action figure collector myself, so no worries about a condescending
tone. If you're interested, or if you know of anyone who might be, or just
have some interesting leads, please e me at junior@...

        Hey, folks,

I was wondering if anyone who has copies of the extended versions of BATTLE and
CONQUEST would mind burning copies for me since Fox doesn't seem like it's ever going
to release them. I'd happily cover all costs, of course.

        Thanks!!

Looks cool Rory. At this point, I'm not 100% decided on the complete
contents. In addition to the radio spots for the five films, there's a an
interview LP for CONQUEST that's going to be included, and possibly some
of the Apes related music I discussed in the original post (though the
more I think about it, that probably should be a separate project). The
one thing I know that no one has mentioned having so far is a
promotional/interview 12" for the first film that was released to the
press. If anyone has this and hasn't mentioned it so far, now would be
        the time to speak up.

Are these scans from inside the BATTLE Herald, or from regular publicity

I have to agree with you that the scene extensions- short though they may
be- really do add something to the film. I also like the subplot with the
bomb, though admittedly it could've been developed further like you said.
And there's also a chance that it was and we've just never seen the
footage because it ended up on the cutting room floor. Or, if they were
hemming and hawing one the set about whether or not to include the bomb
subplot, there may have been more scenes that were never filmed.

I think we really need to interview Frank Capra Jr. to find out what
        happened and why.

        >>So, I'm not too upset if the extended version never replaces the
        theatrical

I actually really enjoy BATTLE. I doubt it was intentional, but the lack
of budget ended up (visually) giving us an ape society that was just
starting out and all the rough edges were more than apparent. On that
level, it works. Though the lack of budget also forced the film makers
into some creative solutions i.e. filming all the Dead City scenes in
        that water treatment plant.

I'd watch BATTLE again before I'd sit through a lot of other movies I
        know of.
