It's from the Battle Herald. One of the lobby cards for Battle is
from the bomb scene:

That's waaaaaaaaay beyond my realm of technical expertise. What going to
happen is that I'll have a master disc made up (a few, actually) and one
will definitely go to James so all the contents can be included in the
files section. Most people should be able to download and burn their own
CD (and use the artwork that Rory made for us), but there'll be some kind
of distribution set up for those who can't burn their own discs. Of
course, it's been my experience that most POTA fans are more than happy
to help out other fans, so I'm sure that everyone who wants a copy will
get one.

BTW, if anyone has an opinion on the contents (radio promo spots and
interviews only or radio promo spots, interviews, and some of the rare
music "inspired by" POTA, now would be the time to chime in.

I had mixed feeling about it, probably due in no small part to the fact
that I really built up a high expectation. However, I agree that it's
really too early to say for sure as this was primarily a 'set up' issue.
I mostly
enjoyed the artwork, though a few panels stood out as being noticeably
different in style (and not in a good way). One thing that did grind on
me though was the forced use of names as an in-joke (Governor/President
Arthur Bishop Trundy, Ms. Rhodes). Things like this (in my opinion)
really need to be subtle. There's such a thing as being too clever.

We'll see how the next issue is.

It's official. The "Return to the POTA" cartoons will be available separately on March 28, the same day they are part of the "Ultimate" collection.  www.dvdplanet.com has them listed as $19.95 (but is selling them for $14). The only curious thing is that it's listed as a single disc, while the "Ultimate Collection" lists them as 2. I doubt Fox would bother to release 2 different versions. Hopefully they didn't try to squeeze them all onto one disc. The single disc listing might be a mistake (hopefully) or maybe each disc of the two is selling separately for $19.95 (hopefully not). $19.95 is the going price usually for a two-disc set.
Anyway, we'll find out soon enough. March will come in like a lion and go out like an ape. Tee hee!  - - - Jeff

Chris, that's a modern problem---what can possibly live up tp our
internet/media heightened expectations.I almost never come out from a
big movie without feeling disappointed.I found that after the
initial 'omigod a new Ape comic at last, must consume asap!'first
reading of the new comic, a second, calmer reading is more rewarding,
and the comic gets better with each reading(apart from the letters
page, obviously).John, Scrolls.

so i think the bomb plot adds a lot, especially if you look at all the movies together, it ties in nicely with Beneath the pota.

I have to agree with you that the scene extensions- short though they may
be- really do add something to the film. I also like the subplot with the
bomb, though admittedly it could've been developed further like you said.
And there's also a chance that it was and we've just never seen the
footage because it ended up on the cutting room floor. Or, if they were
hemming and hawing one the set about whether or not to include the bomb
subplot, there may have been more scenes that were never filmed.

I think we really need to interview Frank Capra Jr. to find out what
happened and why.

>>So, I'm not too upset if the extended version never replaces the

I actually really enjoy BATTLE. I doubt it was intentional, but the lack
of budget ended up (visually) giving us an ape society that was just
starting out and all the rough edges were more than apparent. On that
level, it works. Though the lack of budget also forced the film makers
into some creative solutions i.e. filming all the Dead City scenes in
that water treatment plant.
*****************some very good points!

I'd watch BATTLE again before I'd sit through a lot of other movies I
know of.

Thirty years later, and the animated series finally gets released.I
honestly never thought it would happen. The animated series tipped the
balance for me and I've ordered my Ultimate Ape Head. Not sure if that's
the porno version or not, but what the hell. The animated series is
under-rated in my totally biased opinion. How many other cartoons of
that era are still talked about today and had novelisations(and good
ones!)done of them? I like the animated series a lot--it's certainly
far less jarring than Burton's Apes and the characters are amazingly
well rounded. And somehow a Flintstone Urko really works! John, Scrolls.

I will not be able to burn my own disc.  I'd rather pay to get one sent to me.  In exchange I can also print up a mess of covers -- and can change what I've already done.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 3:15 AM GMT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chimpanzees may be more closely related to human beings than they are to other apes, U.S. researchers reported on Monday. And a second, separate study showed that humans are busily pushing another close cousin, the orangutan, into extinction. Both shed light on the complex and often unhappy relationships between humans and our closest relatives, the great apes.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology said they found genetic evidence that chimpanzees may be more closely related to humans than to gorillas and orangutans. Soojin Yi and colleagues looked at mutations in the so-called molecular clock, using the mutation rate in DNA. "Intriguingly, both humans and chimpanzees appear to have evolved slower than gorillas and orangutans," they wrote in their report. Experts have long known that humans and chimps share much DNA, and are in fact 96 percent identical on the genetic level. Yi's team looked at several specific genes and compared the difference between human and chimpanzee. One very noticeable difference is the longer generation time of humans.

"Humans take almost twice as long to reach sexual maturity as chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and gorillas (Gorilla gorillas), have a longer lifespan, and have a longer gestation period as compared to any nonhuman hominoid," the researchers wrote. Their molecular clock suggests humans evolved this trait just a million years ago. Humans and chimpanzees are believed to have diverged from a single common ancestor about 7 million years ago. "For the first time, we've shown that the difference in the rate of molecular evolution between humans and chimpanzees is very small, but significant, suggesting that the evolution of human-specific life history traits is very recent," Yi said in a statement. While humans are closely related to the great apes, they are driving many populations of chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans into extinction.

Writing in the journal Public Library of Science Biology, Benoit Goossens of Cardiff University and colleagues said their genetic study of orangutans showed a recent catastrophic collapse in genetic diversity. "This is the first time that a recent and alarming decline of a great ape population -- brought about by man -- has been demonstrated, dated, and quantified using genetic information," Goossens said in a statement. They collected hair and faeces samples and documented 200 individuals living in the forests of Malaysia's Sabah state. The genetic pattern suggested that was many fewer animals than in the past."  The genetic study shows that there is a high risk of extinction of the orangutan in Sabah in the near future if this decline goes on unabated," said Marc Ancrenaz of the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project in Sandakan, Malaysia, who also worked on the study.  "The major threat to the long-term survival of orangutans in Sabah is linked with oil palm plantation development and forest destruction. Illegal killing also contributes to this decline."

OK, who here thinks that Fox will sell 10,000 of these?

Who here thinks that in less than a year Fox will have like 9,900 of these for sale at a deep discount?

Here's a photo of what the cover for the PLANET OF THE APES: THE LEGACY
COLLECTION is going to look like, a definite improvement over the Statue of Liberty
spoiler cover from the original release.

    http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Untitled01.jpeg

I've decided I'm NOT going to get the ULTIMATE EDITION. I've canceled my
pre-order at Amazon. I don't really want to have to buy the TV series again, and
I especially can't stomach getting POTA 2001 again -- I'll never watch it!
As for the collector's Caesar head... well... who needs it? If it were Dr.
Zaius that would be one thing, but Caesar from CONQUEST? No, I can live without
it, and since the cartoon series is going to be sold separately, why spend all
that extra money? I've just pre-ordered the Legacy set and the cartoon
    series.

Brook,NJ 07663-0917 Any fans are welcome to write or send ape-related
goodies whenever they feel; the need : )

I would also be indebted if someone could post me a copy of the RADIO
SPOTS CD once they become available-I will send a rare photo to the
first person who does so.And THANKS for those putting this together--it
    is a verrry cool project!

My two cents regarding the ULTIMATE box...logic dictates,as my dear
friend Rory pointed out, that all that's REALLY necessary are the 5
films in anamorphic and the cartoons (many even consider the cartoons
    unecessary).The box and packaging are a fur-crazy indulgence,one that
even this life-long APES fanatic will probably pass on.My financial
rationale, however,is that I DID obtain ALL the Sideshow 12" figures--
    tally THAT price up!

Yeah, I'm a real hypocrite, I guess, but you know the ape head would just stay in the box -- it's not like I'd have the thing out all the time, and it would collect dust if I did.  Might even get bugs in the hair!  Also, I'd rather have the sequels in individual cases.  I'm not sure if the Legacy set will be like the previous box set with each film in it's own case, but I don't want the packaging for the Ultimate set.  It basically comes down to that, not the money.  If I find out that the Legacy set is not individual cases like before, I may just get the head thing after all.

AND, they did say something about TV spots being included with the TV series this time.  I may want the TV series again if Fox includes new extras.  So, I could change my mind again.

No, they don't (though many modern, portable CD players will play MP3
discs, too). I would imagine they'll be captured as normal CD audio
files (WAV, 44.1Khz, stereo) and burned as a normal audio CD.

The "Ultimate Collection" would make a nice group of "safety copies" for the stuff people have. People assume DVDs are forever, but they can scratch or crack pretty easy and then they're history. I've had to replace some already, nothing "Apes" though. In fact, i've had more problems with DVD than with VHS. Despite the warnings that VHS erode with time, I've still got VHS from 20 years ago that look fab, just like Rory!  - - - Jeff

POTA cartoons: 1 disc or 2?

It's official. The "Return to the POTA" cartoons will be available separately
on March 28, the same day they are part of the "Ultimate" collection.
www.dvdplanet.com has them listed as $19.95 (but is selling them for $14). The only
curious thing is that it's listed as a single disc, while the "Ultimate
Collection" lists them as 2. I doubt Fox would bother to release 2 different versions.
Hopefully they didn't try to squeeze them all onto one disc. The single disc
listing might be a mistake (hopefully) or maybe each disc of the two is selling
separately for $19.95 (hopefully not). $19.95 is the going price usually for a
    two-disc set.
Anyway, we'll find out soon enough. March will come in like a lion and go out
like an ape. Tee hee!  - - - Jeff

There aren't any dropouts, just an extreme amount of background noise
in the takes, but what baffles me is the Fox Movie Channel hyped
the "extended" cut so much a few years back, and now fox totally
ignores the fact that a longer cut exists. I was never fortunate enough
to see Battle in the theatres, so the extended cut was the version I
grew up with, and the only version I will watch. I think it is a flawed
picture, but I think there are many poignant moments, and I love Claude
    Akins performance.

www.comingsoon.net  has a link to an interview with Fox's Tom Rothman, who lays out what projects Fox is working on. "X-Men 3" is out this summer and Rothman says it will bring to a satisfying conclusion the X-Men trilogy. Maybe more "X-Men" movies in the future, maybe not. Also in development are "Wolverine" and "Magneto" sequels.
In the writing stage are "Fantastic 4 2" and "Alien vs. Predator 2", both for 2007. And "Silver Surfer" is a possibility.
So no word on "Apes 2" but these flicks only go up to 2007 and 2008 is the 40th anniversary, a good time for a new movie. Could it be...? And, hey, POTA was a comic book put out by MARVEL, and Fox is the House of Marvel. So will Marvels never cease?

Warner is in the process of closing a deal to rent the armory for seven
months for about $350,000, city officials who control the armory told the

Warner is in the process of closing a deal with the city's  Economic

Warner officials could not be immediately reached by the Daily  News on

I Am Legend, which was originally set in Los Angeles,  centers on the lone

That's because it was shot near the LA Airport and that noise is the planes taking off and landing.

Look, let's realize something here.  "Alot" of dialogue in films is looped.  Do you know that James Gregory is completely looped in his Ursus speech?  You hear what he actually sounds like in Jacob's BENEATH NATO film.

If these scenes were meant to be in BATTLE, they would have brought the actor's back to loop their dialogue.  The fact that they didn't proves that the decision not to include those scenes in the final version was an early one.  (However, it does seem that they were scored!  What's up with that?)  The real question is, "Why is there an extended version?  Who's responsible for it?"

OK, who here thinks that Fox will sell 10,000 of these?

Who here thinks that in less than a year Fox will have like 9,900 of

Wasn't THE EVOLUTION box set limited to 10,000 units as well?

Hopefully they'll more than 100 Rory, but I agree with you that the price
will drop significantly within 12-18 months of it's release.

Thanks for the offer John!! Right now- surprisingly- this is one POTA
related archival project that actually *hasn't* generated a whole lot of
cost. However, since there's seems to be contingents of both "I can
download it from the group's file section and make my own" and "I have no
way to burn CDs", we will need some people to help out with
burning/distribution when the time comes. As per usual with things of
this nature, whoever does the burning/shipping should ask a fair
reimbursement for the cost of materials, postage, and wear & tear on the
    old computer system.

In a previous post I mentioned that we'd need people to help burn
distribute the CD, but you may be on to something. Some can make up
covers, others can burn CDs, others could ship. I guess it really depends
on how many people will ultimately need a copy made for them. We'll sort
    it all out.

Personally, IMHO, POTA was a superb, well written, directed and acted
classic -- yet, it was based on the novel...BTPOTA was an original...

    G

What the -- ?!!!!  BENEATH is "based on Characters created by Pierre Boulle" and a sequel to the first film.  OK, so maybe the mutants and the bomb thing were original -- BUT WHAT'S THAT GOT TO DO WITH APES?!!!

this would be the third adaptation of this story, but i am still very interested.
btw, there was a great comic book adaption in the early 90s.

Warner Brothers is close to a deal to rent New York's Kingsbridge Armory as

Warner is in the process of closing a deal to rent the armory for seven
months for about $350,000, city officials who control the armory told the
    newspaper.

Warner is in the process of closing a deal with the city's  Economic
Development Corp. to rent the entire first-floor interior of the armory  for the hefty
sum of $50,000 a month. City officials said the studio plans to  rent the
    armory's 190,950-square-foot interior from Feb. 27 through Sept. 30.

Warner officials could not be immediately reached by the Daily  News on
details of the film, such as who would star in it. But a city  official said the
studio plans to shoot the entire film in various New York City  locations.

I Am Legend, which was originally set in Los Angeles,  centers on the lone
survivor of a plague that has transformed the world's  population into
    blood-sucking vampires.

Got a few points from the last couple of days that
I can't be bothered splitting up:

As it's an area I'm interested in, what sort of
stuff are you including from the "inspired by"
    category?

Not a chance, and I'm banking on it as there's no
way I'm buying it new. I was tempted, briefly, but
once again I was overcome with common sense and
decided it would be stupid as there's so much more
I'd rather spend the cash on. I am also assuming
that the 10000 figure only applies to USA - it's
even less limited when you consider how many
foreign territories (e.g. here in the UK) will
    have their own version.

The UK version is even more pointless a purchase
though - we've already got the sequels in
anamorphic widescreen, and the R2 version of the
Ultimate collection doesn't appear to include the
    cartoons.

    >VHS editions?

Since, as mentioned above, the R2 releases already
had anamorphic treatment, I'd expect Fox to just
use those again, converting from PAL -> NTSC if
necessary. I mean, the alternative is that Fox are
prepared to spend money on Apes and if I go any
further down that route I'd pish myself laughing.

Close Bruce. It's Henry Corden. He had quite an impressive body of work
too: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0179478/. I had forgotten that he hadn't
started doing Fred Flinstone's voice until two years after RETURN.

    Chris L.

Henry Corden also did an odd cartoon series called "The Barkleys" that was a spoof of the then-current All in the Family. For some reason a bigoted family of dogs didn't catch on with the juvenile viewing audience.

.html Most everyone has had a copy of the new comic for weeks now but I just received mine in the mail a few days ago. I am thoroughly enjoying this comic. I love Caesar's diary and his struggle to form a new world. I like the various problems he is having with his own simian race. There is an explanation for how gorillas became aggressive after the revolution and we get a little background on Aldo. Can't wait until the next issue. Elaine<.html
