Greg, I agree with you that yellow isn't a good colour for gorillas!
You could never accuse the UK covers of being timid in their use of
colour.Wolverine on the Planet of the Apes? Urko would kick his ass!

Okay.... I started it. Stop by and add your pin!

http://www.frappr.com/potafans

I had to go with "POTA fans" because "Planet of the
Apes" had already been taken. Oddly, it didn't look
like the person who set it up had "developed" it at
all.

I added a couple pictures, but feel free to throw in
more. If you want, you can flesh out your profile.

Have fun

.html.htmlSo, just who here plans on getting the new APES DVDs on March 28th, whether it be the Ultimate Edition, or the Legacy set, or just the individual movies?

If you are getting the new DVDs what do you plan on doing with the old ones?  I've been thinking I should donate mine to my local branch of the public library.  The library lends out DVDs now and I've noticed they have none of the APES films, but I wonder if there's any reason I should keep them?  I don't like the packaging, hate the Statue of Liberty spoiler cover, and don't care for the menus, plus they have no extras.  Might as well kiss 'em good-bye.

Any thoughts?

I think I'll probably leave them out at the front gate for anyone
interested. As they say, one man's trash is another man's
treasure! I have mine on pre-order from Play in the
UK...unfortunately we have to wait til the 3rd! Let me know what
you think of it!

I'm going to try and pick-up at least the cartoons and the extended
BFTPOTA...I don't know if I can afford the whole set, and I have no
room for the head-package...
If I get the whole set, I have a friend who is a heart-transplant
recipient, and she luvs sci-fi...I'm going to give her my old DVD
set...

If you want to donate them to me then that would be greatly apreciated. I
still have not got apes on DVD. I have the VHS box set from about 8 years
ago, which gets watched regularly...........

Subject: Custom Mego Planet Of The Apes Taylor
.html
I love the Mego Planet Of The Apes line and I even love the generic Mego
Astronaut that was made to avoid paying more to use Charlton Heston's
likeness for a Taylor figure.

But Charlton Heston was one of the first actors I recognized and liked at an
early age and I always wanted a POTA style Taylor as Mego would've done him
in the early 1970's.

So, when I found someone that had a Mego size Heston head, I did the rest.

I believe the Taylor that Mego would've chosen to do would be clean shaven
and in his Astronaut outfit. I believe they would've also used as many
existing molds and clothing patterns as possible. Mego had leftover molds
and patterns from thier GI Joe like effort Action Jackson and thier Barbie
like effort Dinahmite.

The guns with Ape figures were originally made for Action Jackson, as was
the Treehouse playset. Zira's boots were originally made for Dinahmite

The Generic Astronaut outfit is a recycled pattern from an Action Jackson
outfit. I believe they would do the same for Taylor only make it in white
fabric and put on sticker decoration. It wouldn't look exactly like Taylor's
ANSA outfit would capture it in an impressionistic way (just like Dr.
Zauis's outfit).

I took a leftover Astronaut suit I had and after using color remover, bleech
and finally white fabric paint, turned it white.

The boots are also Action Jackson and are like the boots on Generic
Astronaut except in white. The boots are original Action Jackson so they are
kinda yellow with age. Might eventually replace them with white repro boots.

I cobbled together graphics for stickers (ANSA logo/nametag, chest pocket
zipper and US flag) and made a belt out of an oirginal Action Jackson belt
buckle and white band elastic. The Apes/AJ riffle finishes him off.

I primed the resin head a couple times to insure smoothness and painted it
to look as much like a 1970's vinyl head as possible.

I can repro all the Ape boxes and had an Astronaut repro box on hand. I will
eventually make a box for Taylor but in the meantime for the photo I put him
in the Generic Astronaut box and digitally added "Taylor" to the box.

My box for Taylor will probabaly feature the full lenth photo on the right
(I have a couple other choices though) on the back of the box.

Here it is. Keep in mind my goal was not to make a totally accurate Sideshow
style Taylor figure in 8 inches. It was to make the figure as if Mego did it
in the early 1970's to catch a boys eye in the toy store or the pages of a
Sears or JC Pennys catalog.

Excelent work, Mike. You achieved your aim 100% and this is another
example of how the craftmanship and creativity of the APES franchise
continues to inspire others to be creative. A celebration of the love

I've been waiting to see what the UK region 2 version is going to be
selling for and if it indeed does include the 'Return' discs and
extended 'Battle'. I've read conflicting reports and await some
definite proof.

In any case, neither of those are reason alone to part with my wallet
salad, because the fan produced discs I have are excellent. What they
may lack in pristine, digital-quality, is more than compensated for by
what they represent. A fan-produced, labour of love.

I actually quite like the ape head packaging. It's a little funky but
there IS a lot of Roddy in there. Again I'm waiting to see and to find
out what it's made of. If it's vac-formed, eggshell thin, plastic I
don't know if I'll bother with it but if it's something more
substantial then I probably will.

As for my old discs I generally part-exchange for new stuff at a local
store.

Rewrite it!  These comics are a good start too.
Show them how it should be.  I noticed now that
Neil is doing his Bounty Hunter comic, he's much
more prolific.  But I'm working on the Young Dr. Zira.
now. He might get round to some of that.  But If
anyone has an Idea for the new comics, write it.
We'll show those  bastards at Fox just how good it
can be!  If I read POTA2K1 as a comic, I'd wrap fish
with it or line bird cages, or litter boxes with it, or
something like that!  As a story, it's just plain weak.

Well, I'm a bit late but I finally collected my second issue.

My only complaint, and this goes for all comics, is that I find the
format very frustrating. Just as you are getting into the story it
ends and you have to wait another 4-6 weeks for the next part. This is
even more evident with 'Revolution' because the headline story is only
half of the actual book.

In both issues so far I've actually preferred the back up story but
the real test is yet to come. That will be when we have all six issues
and can read 'Revolution' from start to finish.

Still, I'm totally hooked. It's far better than I expected or could
have hoped for. The main story is progressing nicely and the new
elements being introduced are logical and thought-provoking. It's
great to see this franchise being handled so well by the Pro's and
having an end product that we can enjoy and not just tolerate. Is
there any word from the producers if this liscense has any life beyond
this six issue series? I sure hope so.

So, let the speculation begin... What is 'Churchdoor'?

St Paul's cathederal? Alpha Omega?

This is a serious dilemma.  I want to buy the Ultimate Edition and support whatever Fox wants to sell me, if only to encourage them to put out more, but there's just too much about this thing I don't want.  You're primarily paying for that Caesar head, which from what I see in the photos has problems.  I'm just don't think it's something I'll want to look at much, if at all!  Why pay all that money for something that will just go back in the box, then into the closet forever?  I already have displayed in my little apartment the Sideshow Lawgiver, several of the Sideshow 12" figures, several of the Medicoms, two models of the Icarus, three posters from PLANET and one poster from BENEATH! Enough is enough already!

So, I encourage all those that can buy the Ultimate Edition to indeed buy it.  I hope it sells very well.  I will certainly be buying the cartoon series when it's made available separately, but I can't really see the sense in buying the TV series again just to get a few TV spots, and I'll be damned if I'll pay Fox two cents for that 2001 abomination again!  To hell with that!

So, there you go.  What can you do?

out what it's made of. If it's vac-formed, eggshell thin, plastic I
don't know if I'll bother with it but if it's something more
substantial then I probably will.

Well then, let's hope it turns out to be something you'll buy.

Uh-oh, I'm replying to myself. That's the first sign of madness.

Rory, I've just uploaded to the files an image called 'dave's kits'.
It's actually half a dozen pics I've just taken, very hastily pasted
together, but it does the job. I have quite a few more ape inspired
kits spread around the house. eg, the 'escape-o-nauts'

Good question!

First, we turn off the caps lock. :)

Second, instead of buying everything that comes out, whether or not
we like it, we buy the stuff we do like, thereby encouraging the
powers that be to put out more like it. Buying everything, even the
things we think are crap, is a big mistake, as it gives them the
wrong impression about what we want. I personally have no intention
of buying the ape head, for example, because I already have
everything in it, and the head itself is a pretty useless item,
especially at such a high price -- and not all that well-sculpted in
the photo, I might add. Why give Fox the false impression that I
want more items like that? I don't -- I just want more Apes lore to
read, not more mediocre merchandising. Therefore...

Third, we recognize that the franchise is definitely not dead to
begin with. There's a fantastic comic in progress right now which,
according to my comics dealer, is selling quite well. Ty has told me
that they want to do more comics after Revolution ends, which is
fantastic news -- if it becomes either a weekly series or an ongoing
string of miniseries, and if it continues to sell well, then you can
bet there will be more apes stories down the line, in some medium or
another. That will make me happy, so I will continue to buy them,
sending Fox a message that they're doing it right.

Fourth, we maintain a proper historical perspective about POTA2K and
Tim Burton. I know a lot of people didn't like that film, but it
certainly did NOT kill the franchise -- by every measure, it revived
it. Thanks to that movie, we were given a comic series from Dark
Horse and four tie-in novels, all of which were far better than the
movie. A new series of action figures came out, as well as Kubricks
and other merchandise for the toy collectors. The TV series was
released on DVD, and now the animated series is coming out as well,
along with the extended version of Battle. And, though it's not
really to my liking, many might see the ape head as a cool thing to
add to their collection. And again, let's not forget the new comic
-- Revolution is the best thing to happen to POTA in years. Before
Burton's film came out, the POTA franchise truly was dead in the
water. After the Adventure Comics line ended in '92, the Apes
universe stayed dormant for nearly a decade. Whatever you might
think of the Burton film -- and there are valid points on both sides
of the fence as to its quality -- it DID re-awaken Fox's interest in
that universe. True, it didn't spawn a sequel, but that doesn't mean
it killed the franchise. Far from it -- chances are good that
without that film, we wouldn't have had the new comic, or seen both
TV series released on DVD, or gotten any of the other collectibles
that have been offered in the five years since the film's
release. Food for thought.

And finally, we stay vocal about our wishes. Let the folks at Fox
know what you like and don't like. Let them know the comic is great,
and that we want to see it continue. Write letters. Send
e-mails. Remind them of the success Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5,
Buffy and other titles have had as novel franchises, encouraging them
to commission some POTA novels. Write to Mr. Comics and ask them to
hire amazing talents like Dave Ballard and Neil Foster -- not as
replacements for the existing team, who are great and should keep
doing what they do, but for additional Apes stories. Urge them to
publish "Beware the Beast" professionally. It might not work given
the story's prior existence as an online fan comic, but there's no
better time than the present.

And most importantly, remain positive when telling them what you
want, instead of just bashing what's come before. If they don't
think you've gone bananas, they're more likely to think you have appeal.

Personally, I wouldn't even lift a finger to line a litter-box with
it…"without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried,
lost, found, subjected to public enquiry, lost again, and finally

Now that's something I would definitely consider at the same price.
Why the hell didn't they think of that!  They wouldn't have had to
put that cheap crepe hair on it.  They never ask us what we
want.  I used to think they had spies on the groups, but
that'd be giving them way too much credit.  Fox do
something for the fans?  No, spoiler covers and
bad ape heads is all we rate with them. I can
hear 'em now... "Those ingrates!  We gave
them that Tim Burton and an ape head!
Why aren't they giving us all of their
money? ... The little Bastards!"
Their marketing must be full of
retards or something.   "No,

instead, it's much better
than those fan's ideas.
They gotta love this,
because it sucks!"

It's in script form, though a bit more melodramatic since it's
for a comic. But since you're a fair artist I suggest you
do some storyboards. It's the same for film. Anyone
can draw a storyboard. It can even be stick figures.
As long as it gets the idea a cross. I'm not a very
good artist when it comes to photo-realism, but
here's a storyboard for Young Doctor Zira. It's
quick and crappy, but it conveys the idea.

This makes me laugh.  I sense this mentality all the time, most especially from the moderators, who seem to me to be on some kind of remote control social power trip, and think these Yahoo groups are actually important and make a difference.  Please, take up something really constructive, like knitting socks for the homeless or something, and get real!

There's so much crap on the web, who can really take it all in?  I very much doubt that anything being posted in Yahoo or other Internet groups makes much if any impression on anyone in the studio's home video companies.  It's all just another VERY SMALL part of the tremendous wall of noise that comes at us everyday from all the media.

Look, if they were really interested in giving us what we want, they'd give us anything and everything they wanted to sell us -- for like a nickel!  At that price why would we complain?

Yeah, the negativity can get pretty bad, but I also find it bad when there's an attitude of "it's all good" and someone is like a Pollyanna.  That gets tiring real fast too.

For me "All Apes are not equal."  The first movie is my favorite film, I love it, I think it's great, but I'm intelligent and honest enough to know it has its flaws and what they are.  I can discuss and dissect its flaws without ever forgetting what I love about.  Same thing with all the rest of APES.  Some things I like, but mostly I'm not into the sequels and beyond anywhere near who much I'm into the original movie, and when you get down to the 2001 remake -- I'm not there at all!

Oh, by the way, there were two things I watched about Tim Burton this morning on TV -- because he's been nominated for an Oscar -- and neither profile mentioned POTA2001, not even when they brought up Helena "What's-her-face" and the films they've done together.  So even the people that made that turd remake don't want to be reminded of it!

I wish every APES fan would forget the Burton film too!

We did support the Battle petition but that was an effort of several

which was a victory in itself.
However, I don't think that any of the moderators in this group (and

in this group is anything more than a bunch of POTA fans discussing

Hi people i need some help
can someone answer me these questions

1 when Taylor arrives the year is 3976 right, but when Brent arrives
      it's 3955? why the difference

2 In the book of Battle of the planet of the apes it mentions the
doomsday bomb, Kolp tells the woman to look after it when he goes to
attack the city, in the film he makes some remark to her just as
they are going to attack the city- maybe this is what was cut from
      the film too, but why.

3 The city in Conquest is it supposed to be New York?

4 Why didn't Taylor realise he was on earth when he picked up
the 'Human' speaking doll in the cave?

      Lastly
In Escape they mention Taylor's ship being destroyed in the
atmosphere? but why didn't they mention it anymore...

Well, I do the ape boxes for $17.

I could do the figure for someone else as well. But I'm not sure of the
final price since it would require me getting a good Astronaut suit, Mego
body and Mego metal belt buckle (or a repro which may be available) and
white AJ boots. The head is a resin head cast available from a dealer that's
      no problem.

It would be the price of materials plus the labor(most of all the take the
color out of and paint the Astronaut suit) and finishing the head (sanding,
putty filling if nessesary, priming and painting).

If anyone's really interested in me making one for them, email me and we'll
      work out something.

      Best,
      Mike

While perusing through a Borders Books & Music last night, I came across
the latest issues of Starlog (April 2006) that features an interview with
Eric Braden. He talks about ESCAPE a little bit, but there's a lot more
on COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT. By the way, when the hell did Starlog go
up to 8 buck a pop?

I also received the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly in the mail
yesterday (#867, March 10, 2006 with The Sopranos on the cover) and one
of the articles featured inside is 'The 25 worst sequels of all time'.
Aside from such genre films as Star Trek V, Batman & Robin, and The
Phantom Menace, anyone care to guess which soon-to-be-
released-in-an-expanded-DVD-edition, 1973 "final chapter" made the list?
Yet, neither Superman III or IV was mentioned. Go figure...

First, may I remind Rich that the release of the Tim Burton movie
(which I pretty much despised) fortunately did make possible the
publication of the book PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED,which sat in
      limbo for
years without publishers interest, and which I co-authored.Because of
the Buton/Apes hubub, the greedy publsihers figured they could jump
on the back of the movie publicity.Fortunately, though,it made it
possible for us to finally get the thing published,so that is the
extent of my regard for the remakes' existence.

Regarding the continued "should I or shouldn't I" squabble over
purchasing the costly new "ultimate" Ape-head set...it is a
      difficult
choice for many I think because, frankly, the only elements to
      recommend it
are two; anamorphic transfers and animated series.Personally,I know
of no one salivating for the animated series, although there are
      several out there I'm sure.

      This release is simply
      FOX tempting the
loyal APES completist to re-purchase alot of material they already
own.(Why were the last transfers in the 2000 box set not
anomorphic)? On the flip side,we as fans would like to support APES
      releases
as incentive and encouragment for future released product. So it is a
double edged sword. On one hand,we want to support the APES item,on
the other hand,we DON'T want to cast our "vote" for a shoddy product
that we really aren't crazy about (like the Hasbro figures of
      several years ago).

I think the concept of a mega-ape set is good, but why none of the
extras that would truly make it a must-own purchase instead of a
      pretty
dubious rehash? Extended still gallery, unedited full-length
interviews that were done with cast members for the AMC BEHIND
documentary.More of Roddy's home movies (There ARE more!),etc. would
have tipped the scales for folks like myself whi STILL aren't
certain if it's a good idea.

Perhaps because Fox is holding off on that material and 5 or 10
years from now there will yet
      ANOTHER "ultimate" set---mark my words.

Worst sequel ever would have to be BATMAN & ROBIN,
closely followed by SUPERMAN III. It will probably
surprise nobody however to learn that I do own
SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM on DVD. Superior to the

I hope Rory finds Booth's birthday worthy of celebration since both
the Yahoo home page pic and sound are in Booth's honor.

It's the penultimate chapter of Marvel's adaptation of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and there's so much action in this installment it crowded out everything else. No letter column, no article, no photos, just 13 pages of comics and a cover.

So action packed Greg that we in the UK actually had more panels in our
version of Conquest than you did in the States. It seems the UK comic
had first pick and use of the art, which sometimes was trimmed for the
US mag.Rob Kirby did an article on this in vol 3 of the collected Comic
Book Artist. It wasn't all good news, though---there was a whole page of
Battle we never saw over here, and which came as a pleasant surprise
when I stumbled across it in the US mag years later. Happy days!

So clearly after the UK run is finished, Greg will have to go through
all of the U.S. and U.K. magazines and piece together "The Complete
Marvel PotA Comics Art" panel by panel....

      Oh, yeah! Great freakin' film...not.

Of course, nothing beats "King Kong Escapes," the sequel to "Kimg Kong Vs.
Godzilla," both of which are now out on
      DVD.
