Oh, so that's probably the classic cast...They were my favorites...But
what, you may ask, does all of this have to do with Planet of the
Apes?...Well, the original question mentioned Ricardo Montalban...=)

Who did you get the head from and how much are they?

Fantastic job on the custom.
I love that you attempted to do it as Mego might have. I think you

The head comes from here:

http://heads.tigersbonemachine.com/

under "Various Heads"

the sculpt is by someone that goes by the handle ABMAC on the Mego list but
he also might be a member here (speak up and take a bow if you are).

The head is available unpainted for $15 and it can also be bought painted
(don't know how much more it is I painted my own)

Best,
Mike

Is that anything like COLOSTOMY: THE MORBID PROJECT? I know, bad, but not as bad as that
'Hugo, Man Of A Thousand Faces Ultimate Ape Head'.

Hey Matt,

It's a braver man than I that has the courage to post a new vision of
the timeline for public comment. Y'see Matt, the problem is that if
you take 400 Ape fans and ask them to create thier own timeline you
are going to end up with 400 different versions all tailor made to the
individual.

Your timeline is certainly entertaining and well considered, you've
given it a lot of thought and for that I applaud you but it is nothing
at all like the timeline I envisage and I'm sure the same is true for
the majority of others. But that's not a criticism on my part and
please, don't take it as such. If this is how it works for you then
it's just as valid as any other that has been published here or elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing,
Dave

Yes, but were those eels JELLIED?I can just about relate to normal eels
normally cooked, as they're still, basically fish. Semi civilised
Cockneys like Ballard's lot go a lot further with their eels. They
slice them and kind of pickle them in a putrid piss based jelly and,
almost unbelievably then voluntarily place this pukey mess in their
mouths. The English drive towards Empire was fuelled solely by the need
to find edible food somewhere. And please, if you value your sanity,
don't get Alan Maxwell started on his Friday haggis, brown sauce and
square sausage sandwich.I feel sick just thinking about it. John,

Sorry about the delay in getting these back to you.  Glad to hear you guys are enjoying the comics.

Cheers,

--

Here are some of the questions members emailed and IMed me last night. I apologize if some of these topics were already covered in the chat.

Will this series be collected for a trade paperback, and, if so, will there be any extras?

The plan right now is for a trade paperback of the first six.  I hope there are extras ? galleries and sketches and stuff

How hopeful can we be of more series?

Entirely dependent on sales.  We?d love to do more, and there are always more stories to tell in the APES universe.

Have you seen the Extended version of BATTLE and did it influence your story at all?

Well, I?ve seen it now, thanks to you J  I hadn?t seen it when we started working on the series, but I was aware of the elements that were cut.  They did have some influence on the development of the plot, but you?ll have to wait until issue five (which I?m writing now) to see how all those elements come into play.

How much freedom did you have with your scripts---Marvel seem to have had some problems with clearing certain things with Fox.

The only things that Fox has asked us to tone down are language and violence; they?re adamant that APES remain a PG, family-friendly franchise.  We also don?t have clearance for actor?s likenesses, but that doesn?t affect me at a script level.

Please, please, please can we have at least one short story based on the TV Series!

No no no.  But thanks for asking politely.

Was black and white ever considered or was it always going to be a color book?

More of a Ty question, but as far as I know we never considered going B&W.  It was always conceived as a colour book.

Would you be allowed to re-visit the Marvel sagas, Terror and Future History Chronicles,or would that be outside your license?

I suspect it would be outside our license, but we?re more interested in striking our own unique interpretation of the APES saga, rather than dealing with someone else?s.  So far, the response to our take has been overwhelmingly positive.

Did you ever see the Malibu/Adventure series, which, for all its faults, ran for 24 regular issues and several mini series?

We looked at pretty much ever comics incarnation of APES before us.

Will we see Ty Templeton's art on any of these strips---your work on Spider-Man-Human Torch(especially your rendition of Black Cat!) has left us panting for more!

I keep pushing him to do a story, but between editing my scripts, writing the backups and overseeing production on every issue (not to mention his regular work for Marvel, DC and THE SIMPSONS comics), there?s not much time left in the day.  Maybe if he ate and slept at the same time . . .

Do you have any idea how grateful us Apes fans are to you guys for bringing Apes back?

Do you have any idea how grateful we are that you?re reading it?  And LIKING it?

How did Metallic Rose start?

We planted a metallic bud.

Whose idea was it to do a POTA comic?

It was Ty?s initial suggestion, I think.  We were looking at various licenses, and that one really struck a chord.

How did they sell 20th on the idea?

Again, Ty question.

How was the talent assembled?

Ty?s rolodex.  He hired people he knew whose work he liked.

Why did they choose the timeframe between "Conquest" and " Battle "?

It?s the great untold story of the APES saga.  I can?t believe no one tackled it before!

How will they decide whether or not they do more POTA comics after this series?

It all comes down to sales.  SO GET OUT THERE AND BUY THIS COMIC!

How easy (or difficult) was it to obtain the POTA licence?

Ty question for sure.

Do FOX have much of a say in what you can and cannot do?

Fox has complete oversight on everything we do.  They approve everything with the APES logo on it.  They?re Fox?s toys; we just get to play with them.

Has there ever been any hint from FOX of new APES projects (other than your own) being in development

Well, they?re quite supportive of the franchise (see the mega-DVD box set coming out later this year).  But I don?t know if they?re planning on making more movies or anything ? the last time they tried it things didn?t work out so well.

Who are Mr Comics and how are they different from Metallic Rose?
MR Comics is a division of Metallic Rose.

Is ?Revolution? still set in an alternate version of the 90?s?
It?s set in an alternate present consistent with CONQUEST, with bits added.  We know so much more about the 90s now than we did in the 70s, don?t you think?  Anyway, no matter when they?re set, all the APES movies are about us, right now.  They?re political and social satire, and that?s been the aspect of the series we?ve tried to stay most true to.

Can you give any hints for what may be in the pipeline

Nope.  It?s a secret.  You have to buy issues 3-6.

You helped resurrect the RoboCop franchise for TV - Have you any similar plans for APES?

It?s not my call, but if someone offered me the gig I?d take it in a heartbeat.  I like monkeys.

Cheers,
Joe

Did anyone happen to catch the POTA spoof on Family Guy Sunday night?
Peter had managed to get one of the feet from the Statue of Liberty and
had it delivered to Spooner Street in order to stop Quagmire from getting
married (Quagmire has a foot fetish). Later, when Mayor Adam West (yes,
'Mayor') came upon the foot later in the episode, he launched into the
"You maniacs!!". "You blew it up!!" routine.

Commander McBragg also appeared in The Simpsons that night, so it was
60's pop culture reference heaven for me.

I've just uploaded an ad that has appeared in the UK sci-Fi mag SFX.

There's still confusion over here in the UK, with no definite
statement as to what the region 2 version does or does not include.
Some advertisers (like this one) make no mention of "Return' or the
extended "Battle', others do - but I get the feeling these are just
cut-and-paste descriptions from US trade ads.

If anyone wants a hi-res version of the scan just mail me off-list.

If they are no longer offering the item it is very likely that they have
sold out their quantity to pre-orders.

Amazon.com is still taking pre-orders with over 500 orders all ready
confirmed plus other retailers like FYE and Musicland are planning on
carrying the item in their stores. Smaller local outlets and catalog
companies (on-line and published) are buying their product from one of
the many distributors that have also placed orders with us.

So you know, FOX is out of the Ultimate Collection. As of last
week, we have taken orders for all the units in the US and are almost
completely allocated for the units in Canada.

We are excited to see that accounts are taking the Legacy Boxset and the
single discs. Many retailers are placing orders for those and hopefully
people will be jazzed to get these remastered versions.

Peabody's Improbable History, which was done by Jay Ward's studio. The
same people responsible for Rocky & Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairytales,
Dudley Do-Right, and Aesop & Son.

Tennessee Tuxedo was from Total Televison studios, who are probably
best know for Underdog, but were also responsible for King Leonardo &
Odie, The Hunter, Klondike Kat, Go-Go Gophers. You can find a bit of
history about the studio here:

though there's also a book out that goes into much more detail:

Here's a question I'd like to throw out.

Since the cancellation of `Return to the POTA' what, for you, has been
the most satisfying production that's furthered the franchise?

Now, if I'd said `important' love it or hate it, it would have to be
Burton's remake - which is why I'm saying `satisfying'. There's been
lots of hits and misses over the years: Comics, Cds, books, toys,
chatrooms and websites, I'm sure we all have our favorites

For me, it would be a close tie of the `Behind' documentary and Joe's
`Revisited' book, but maybe for you it's something quite different.
Perhaps the Sideshow or Medicom figures? Perhaps the Archive or
Rittenhouse cards?

Anyone?

I doubt anyone here would recall an old English actor who appeared in movies in the 30s and 40s.  His name was Sir C. Aubrey Smith and he was in many, many movies, but you might remember him as the Colonel who was grandfather of Shirley Temple in WEE WILLIE WINKIE (1937).

There have been two things that have been the most satisfying for me.

The first was the news in 1997 that the complete score for PLANET was going to be released on CD.  As a huge Jerry Goldsmith fan -- and PLANET being my favorite film -- I was floating on air when I read this news.  Nothing since has really equalled it.

The second thing was the release of the 35th Anniversary DVD.  Oh, it wasn't all that I wanted it to be and in many ways a little disappointing, but after years of requesting such a thing from Fox on laserdisc, and after suffering through so many bad transfers of PLANET on VHS and laserdisc, to finally get the movie in a fine anamorphic DVD transfer, and with a very fine Dolby Digital 5.1 stereo soundtrack, well, I was finally satisfied.

First off, the cover on this week's issue is a total fake-out. You may think we're getting back to the adventures of Jason and Alexander in the Terror storyline, but that actually occurs next week.

This issue actually contains, I assure you, the cataclysmic conclusion of Marvel's adaptation of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

Strangely, the back cover for this issue features a photo of Cornelius and Zira from Escape. But the copy along the bottom of the photo correctly teases the contents of the next issue, unlike the front cover, which is completely wrong.

I'd say on a wider scale it would be the Medicom
figures because they were out there on the open market
for the public......
Personally I like Russo's book.....it answered may
questions I had had for years~

Greg, Marvel's UK division was a curious thing at the best of
times.Thet were often a week out out of synch with each other, plugging
stories as 'next week' when they's already happened. Years ago I tried
to contact Neil Tennant, the guy from the Pet Shop Boys, as he was
editor at Marvel UK for a while.I wanted to find out who was
responsible for the ridiculous/inspired decision to 'create'
Apeslayer. His personal assistant telephoned me back to say he never
worked on that comic, which is odd, as his name is in the small print!

.html.htmlDirtfishMovieNews:

Oscar winning actor Benicio Del Toro is to play The Wolf Man!

Del Toro, 39, has signed a deal with Universal Pictures to star in the
movie which will be a new version of the horror classic.

The Wolf Man is set in Victorian England and is about a man (Del Toro)
who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a
werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) is working on a script.  Universal are
hoping for a summer 2008 release.

Del Toro is currently filming Che Guevara biopic Guerrilla for Oscar
winning director Steven Soderbergh.

Fox made a movie called CHE in 1969 starring Omar Shariff.  Michael Wilson wrote the screenplay!

Anyway, I love the Wolf Man.  Wanna take bets this new version will suck?

I'd have to say the 30th Anniversary VHS Box Set. Not only do I closely
associate it with the AMC Labor Day Marathon in 1998 where I spent most
of the weekend glued to the television set and recording stuff on VHS
(the movies were also heavily programmed for the entire month of
September BTW), but I finally had a descent version of the BENEATH TV
spot (with the arrow scrolling down the screen) that I always used to see
on The 4:30 Movie. Of course, Fox claimed that it was the theatrical
trailer (which were already released on Laserdisc), but this is one
mistake I'm glad they made.

Closely behind that would be the proper releases of the CD soundtracks:
PLANET, BENEATH, and CONQUEST/BATTLE (in which yours truly is listed in
the special thanks section). :-D

The Wolf Man was my second favorite Universal Pictures monster, when
I was growing up...Unfortunately, you're probably right -- this will
most likely suck...It is a pretty sure bet that they will totally
miss the poignancy of the original...

It's a very, very tough call. The Sideshow figures are stunning. The
Behind documentary is still the best such behind the scenes disc I've
ever seen, truly definitive. The Medicoms were also amazing. The cd
release of the TV Series soundtrack was a massive, very welcome
surprise.Likewise the excellent Revoulution comic. However, after much
thought, the one single thing that brought the biggest smile to my
face, and still does, is Greg and co's homemade trading card
images. That project, for me, was simply a dream come true, brilliantly
executed and absolutely spot on with it's choice of images and text.It
gets my vote. John Scrolls.
