Eric Greene is an OK guy, I guess.  I've never met him and Jeff Krueger doesn't talk about him much because he'll get sued or something (the guy's a lawyer), but I just think some of Greene's ideas about the POTA movies are a little silly.

If you want to donate them to me then that would be greatly apreciated. I
still have not got apes on DVD. I have the VHS box set from about 8 years
ago, which gets watched regularly...........

.html.htmlHey everyone, if you're interested in an updated version of the book POTA REVISITED with more behind the scenes photos you need to let one of the authors, Joe Russo, know.  He wants to do another book, but has no idea if there's enough people who want the thing.  So send him an email at: softparadeband@...

Let him know you're out there!

My comment was just some kidding about how Eric Greene seems to be everywhere POTA. I don't think anyone has a problem with Eric  as a person. Some feel his book is more analysis than solid info and that he gets too much attention, especially from those who create new Ape product. Let's recap: Eric arguably had more screen time than anyone on "Behind the POTA"; he did the text commentary on the 35th anniversary DVD; the liner notes on the TV show soundtrack; and of course his award-winning book (it won the Golden Scroll Award of Merit from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films).
Personally, I like his book. I think there's plenty of room to discuss the political and social aspects of POTA, and there's more to the book than that. Lots of tidbits (I think I recall) of POTA history. In "Behind" he brings a good perspective and I don't think anything he says is out of line. His DVD commentary is straightforward Ape factoids, not analysis. Yes, he's got more than his share of the spotlight, to the exclusion of people like Joe Russo, Bill Blake and others. But I have no complaint about Eric's work. I don't agree with every word of his book but I find it fascinating and unique. I think he backs up most of his points. I would put "POTA Revisited", "Legend of the POTA", Eric's book and Sauseville's collectibles book as the must-haves for POTA nonfiction. - - - Jeff

So is Patrick, but that doesn't mean I buy into his theories.
Some people like to speculate as to the writers' intent.
But those guys are all dead.  So how can state anything
categorically.  If people agree that's cool.  But you can
read into it most anything.  I bought it for the pictures.

Subject: Newbie -- confused about the new POTA merch
.html
OK, I'm not really a newbie. A long time ago i was a member of this group.

The new comic book and the new boxed set have reawakened my inner ape, so to speak,
and so now . . . well, I'm back. Not that anyone knew I was gone. Or here . . . nevermind.

(About the comic: I'm a comic book writer -- I did some books for Alias, Image, and some
independant stuff, including a recent tribute to Ed Wood that included, among other
things, a monkey -- and really the only property I'd like to write for is POTA -- not X-Men
or Batman -- POTA, if I could get the chance. But that's neither here nor there. My series
The Imaginaries contained some tributes to POTA, also, BTW.)

So here's the deal. I have the EVOLUTION boxed set, the two-disc Special Collector's
Edition BEHIND THE PLANET OF THE APES, the complete TV SERIES, and the 2 disc SPECIAL
EDITION (yeah, right) 2001 POTA.

So recently I get the new edition of the original POTA because i notice there's a lot of
feature commentary stuff that i didn't recognize -- HOPING I actually was getting new
material. Fortunately, after I got home and checked I found it was new material.

So here's the question: I've got all the above stuff. What new material is in the Legacy set
that I don't already have?

I've been looking around (and reading through like hundreds of posts here as well) and I
haven't found what I'm looking for. (Also a U2 fan.)

But here's what it looks like to me:

Does the Legacy set really only offer 6 minutes of BATTLE?

Does the Ultimate set really only offer an ape head, 6 minutes of BATTLE, the animated
series, and some MEGO commercials?

And so . . . will the extended cut of BATTLE and teh animated series be released
seperately?

~ Ben

BTW -- One of MY favorite POTA movies? The Make Up Test. It's a pretty cool short film, in
some ways . . .

Yes, and Yes.  The only thing of real substance that the new editions are offering is anamorphic video -- which will mean nothing to you if you don't already have a 16x9 video display, and remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 stereo soundtracks.  Now, ESCAPE has until now only been available in mono on DVD, so something new that you should add to you list is a stereo ESCAPE.  The quality of the sound remasters is unknown to me at this time, and I'm hoping that in addition to the anamorphic video that there will be an improvement in picture quality -- but I'm not holding my breath.

The extended cut of BATTLE and the cartoon series are supposed to be available separately, but it might not be right away, at least not with the cartoon show.  There are supposed to be some TV spots added to the TV show discs, for what that's worth.

It sounds to me, from what you've said that you've got all you need, and that it's probably best if you just wait and get the extended BATTLE and cartoon show separately.  I'd also consider picking up the stereo ESCAPE, if that is important to you, Ben!

Not really important . . . at least not with my current tv!

Thanks for the answers. I'll be on the look out for those individual items, then. When and IF
they come out.

Meanwhile, any word on an extended cut of CONQUEST? Or will we have to wait another five

I'll take it a step further and say that a lot of his ideas are silly. Obviously the book was a labor of love, but at the same time he just read way to much into things that weren't there, and then missed some of the more obvious stuff. If you broke it down to a mathematical formula, you'd have: if (situation or incident from POTA book, film, or TV show) and (obscure socio/political/historical fact), we must therefore surmise that (logic defying and head scratching interpretation of aforementioned incident). I mean, if you can write something like "Beautiful women aren't allowed to be intelligent, so when Nova spoke she had to be killed in order to protect the societal norm" (I'm paraphrasing here, obviously), you've obviously take a trip a little too far out into the Forbidden Zone.

I think the book review in EW (when it first came out) summed it up best: "Sometimes, a school bus driving across a desert is JUST a school bus driving across a desert.

I actually visited Chris Sauseville a few times. Nice guy, and he's got a
pretty cool collection of stuff to look through. The only thing I didn't
like about his book was I felt he spent far too much time and space
including photos of custom made items at the sacrifice of including
images of the stuff that was commercially available that people might
actually have a chance of obtaining. And even if they couldn't, you could
at least see what was available to the general public once upon a time.

I'm just wondering if it could work! I don't know the length of a

asking it to you all. besides, in terms of storyline, what would be
the best "assembling" of episode per single DVD in order to make

I like Eric's book better than most seem to, but I'll add seeing EW review ANY book about POTA 10 years ago was a rush. I think it also got extensive coverage in "Sci-Fi Universe"? They actually shot a guy in an ape mask reading the book. 1996, 10 years ago this month when Eric's book was published, was the kick off of an incredible "Apes" decade. This week is the 10th anniversary of the Simpsons musical parody (March 24th). That too was a signal that POTA was back. "POTA Revisited" was there first with excerpts in "Starlog" (almost a decade earlier) and "Sci-Fi Universe" but 1996 will always be special to me personally. Eric did book signings, I got to meet people like Booth Colman and Bill Blake who are still friends. The first time I saw the Simpsons musical was with Ron Harper, who got a kick out of it. Bill Blake made me up as an ape that summer. Wow, 10 years. Thanks "Ape Chronicles" and Eric Greene.
As for his book, I think if he's "reading things" into it, he does so intelligently. And he does quote some of the creators (J. Lee Thompson on the Watts Riot influence, Doug Wildey in a rare interview on the subject). At the least it's a different way of looking at POTA and I'm glad someone wrote it.  - - - Jeff

I think the book review in EW (when it first came out) summed it up best: "Sometimes, a school bus driving across a desert is JUST a school bus driving across a desert.

Hey guys,

What's about Taylor's look-like? I see an "evolution" throughout
PLANET. In the beginning his hair are short and his face clean. Then
his hair looks very messy ( I don't know why, but he's looking like
he's loosing hair or something!) and he get a beard.
Then in the end his face has been finally shaved, and his hair are
long and "modern". I prefer this last version of him.

I don't know why, but in the middle of the movie Taylor looks older
and his hair somehow "departed".

What do you think about it?

Subject: Re: [Planet of the Apes] Packing the cartoon series in a "trilogy"
.html
There are 13 episodes, 30 minutes each (about 25 minutes each without commercials). Here's a link to a pretty detailed episode guide:

It does have the episodes out of order, though. Here's the correct order:

1. Flames of Doom
2. Escape From Ape City
3. The Unearthly Prophecy
4. Tunnel of Fear
5. Lagoon of Peril
6. Terror on Ice Mountain
7. River of Flames
8. Screaming Wings
9. Trail to the Unknown
10. Attack from the Clouds
11. Mission of Mercy
12. Invasion of the Underdwellers
13. Battle of the Titans

The first nine episodes were adapted into 3 novels, so there is in a sense a 'trilogy' already made from the series, but it leaves out the last four episodes.

Without spoiling anything for anyone who hasn't seen these yet and will see them for the first time when they are released as part of the Ultimate DVD set, I suggest you break the 13 episodes in the following way to get a 'trilogy' of films: Part 1 would be the first 5 episodes as I listed above, ending with Lagoon of Peril. Next four episodes after that make up part 2, and the last 4 make up the final part of the trilogy. Just my opinion, of course. Others might see things differently.

You can see images from the first three episodes on the card set I created on Hunter's site:

There were 13 episodes filmed. As for assembling them in trilogies I suggest you  watch the episodes or read David Hofstede's book for more info- I have a set of cartoons on DVD and still haven't watched them all.

You mean, What about what Taylor looks like?
Well, he can't shave all that time he's asleep,
so his beard grows.  And hair looks fuller when
it's shorter because it sticks up more.  When
it's longer the weight of the hair holds it down.
But as soon as he's freed, and is allowed to
handle sharp objects again, he shaves.

* An article from Starburst magazine (thanks to Dave)
* A scan of an ad for the 1998 VHS Box Set release (thanks to Dave)
* Scans of the original 5 movie posters (thanks to Dave)
* Restored artwork from Chiller Theatre #15 (thanks to Dave)

The site has become a little unwieldy lately. I hope to reorganize

I mentioned a while ago that I would upload some Ape sounds I had
downloaded back in the 1990's from either the AOL online service of
that time, or ape sites that were around in 1997 but are not around
today.

Today is my day off, and my laptop is up and running (where the sounds
are stored). The sounds are in Mac system format I believe (so they
had to be downloaded from the AOL of 1997. I will convert them and
post them to my website soon.

Anyway, Taylor (Heston)'s hair "uncover" the age of our hero, 43/44.
I think that Charlton was losing his hair, or they were retroceding.

Ten years ago today "The Simpsons" broadcast premiered the episode "A Fish Called Selma" and since then Ape fans have always had something to sing. It featured the "Stop the POTA, I Want To Get Off" musical starring Troy McClure and featuring the songs "Dr. Zauis" and "Chimpan A to Chimpan Z". It's available on both a soundtrack album ("Songs in the Key of Springfield" ) and on the new DVD set "the Complete 7th Season" (featuring audio commentary by guest star Jeff Goldblum and others). It's become something of a POTA icon and was the only parody included in "Behind the POTA". It's the reason we don't hate every POTA song we hear and reach for the next beer. Happy Anniversary! - - - Jeff

Some people are just lucky I guess. There use to be a video store by me
that would put new DVDs on sale the Friday before their official
release date the following Tuesday. I remember getting the TV series
the weekend before everyone else had it.

Speaking of the new DVDs I was wondering which of them everyone plans
to play first when they get the collection and why. For me it is the
BATTLE DVD. Not because it is my favorite film but because I want to
see the quality of the transfer on the Extended version. After that I
would say CONQUEST to see if they got the aspect ratio correct this
time.

The first one I'm going to check out is PLANET to see if it's the same disc as the 35th Anniversary edition.  I wonder if the menu screens have been redone or if the transfer has been improved?

I also will want to compare how much, if at all, the stereo has been improved on the sequels, and if ESCAPE is really in stereo this time.

The transfer on BATTLE better not look like what the Fox Movie Channel showed, and it better not look like the laserdisc either!

Jimbo,

Great! I'll promote your links as well!

Please, when the DIRECTOR's CUT 'BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES'
will come out, can you issue an "account" of all the extended scenes
for ALL those who - in the world - would like to know them (even
casual movie buffs)?

I don't know when they will release the ULTIMATE ONE in Italy.

I went there, James, but I'm not sure what you mean by "Door panel ads."  Are you talking about the long, narrow posters?  If so, those are "Insert Posters" and in the real world measure 14x36 inches.

You can already view them on the MultiMedia Subsite on my site:

Those are from the Japanese laserdisc.

There already is an account of the extra scenes in our Database
section. Just go here

select "Battle Uncut".

Also, if you want to see the "Alpha-Omega" bomb scenes from Battle;
they are in the Video section of the group website. Here is the
