.htmlI'm going to first check the Conquest aspect ratio (skip to the
statue scene), then a couple of television spots (just to make sure
they are there) then I'm going to have a backwards "APE DAY"
starting with the animated series, the television series, then the
films. I don't think Burton's will be invited to the festivities.

I already knew the "account", but I have a bad feeling on this: I
think that they will *NOT* restore all the cut scenes. I don't know
why.

Amazon hasn't shipped mine yet....
One person who offered the Apes 'toons I authored as a vine on a
trading board I frequent said he had a chance to compare those DVDs to
the commercial "Return" DVDs yesterday. He wrote:

I'm sorely tempted, sorely tempted. But, as I ordered my from Amazon -- and it's in transit now -- I wouldn't be buying anything, just looking. I would like to see the head, but how can I be sure that it'll be displayed?
Apart from this, this is also the day that the new KING KONG comes to DVD. Of course it'll outsell APES, but this is the first time that there's been such a "BATTLE OF THE APES" at video stores!

I might if that head wasn't so damned ugly.
I will be interested to here what it's made
of. I'm guessing it's just vac-u-formed
plastic. In which case there's hope
for a future release of something
not so bad. If they did a Zira I
guess I'd buy one, maybe.
But they should just do

There was an announcement on the radio.
So that means Fox actually spent some
money. It was just a promo and not a
full blown commercial though, so they
didn't spend very much, but it's
encouraging that they are trying
to make money off POTA again.

That's because POTA is Foxes Redheaded Step child.
It's a skeleton in their closet. A cash cow they drag
out to boost their bottom line. But it's their own fault
for not making a series they could be proud of. And
they'd make more money than I have metaphors.

.html Well I found the Ultimate POTA DVD Collection today at 'fye'! I went
to Best Buy, but they said they wouldn't be carrying it. (Their loss.)
Anyway the 'fye' store I went to had only one copy and so, $179.99
later, I've got my limited edition (# 5815 of 10,000) displayed on my
entertainment center.
I didn't expect it to be a big as it was. And it looked a lot cooler
than the images I saw on the internet.
Already watched "Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (Extended Edition)"
which was well worth the wait!
Happy watching fellow simians!

After work I went to DVD Planet to see if
they had any "Ultimate POTA" sets left. I figured they'd order 3 or so and
they'd all be gone. But they had stacks of them and said they'd already sold 7
or 8. The price was $119, the best I've seen so I grabbed one.
Anyway, I began the evening with the end of
Peter Jackson's "King Kong". This is going to be a classic. The people who
missed this in theaters are going to kick themselves when they catch up with it
on DVD (Everyone at DVD Planet seemed to have a copy of this).
Then the main event, surveying this POTA
thing. First of all, the head. It didn't look as bad as the pictures showed. It
doesn't look at all "realistic", but it's not meant to be. The face is wood. It
looks like something you'd buy at Disneyland. But I like it. Feels like they
used quality materials and I don't feel ripped off.
Next, you open the velcro flap on the back
and pull out the DVDs. I LOVE the DVD holder. It's very compact, about the size
of a box calendar, and holds all 14 DVDs. Talk about portable. Basically it's a
cardboard holder. Some might find it cheap-looking but it does the trick. I like
the graphics on it. But be warned: the infamous "giving away the statue ending"
is all over this. Each DVD has a picture on the disc for whatever content is on
the disc (TV show discs have a TV show picture, cartoon discs have a cartoon
picture, etc.) Purists should know that they use a picture from "Beneath" on the
DVD for the original movie.
I made this quick. I just checked out the
new stuff. First the cartoons. I think the picture and sound quality are
excellent. You can hear every monotone voice and overacting perfectly. The image
quality is better than I expected. Just look at those mouths move!
Next I checked each of the TV show discs.
They are the exact same ones as the previous release. NO TV SHOW COMMERCIALS as
we were promised. That's a big disappointment.
I went to "Battle" to see the quality of the
extended scenes. No loss of quality at all from the main feature. Picture and
sound seem improved on the sequels. (They also have that new "don't pirate" ad
that's been hitting DVDs lately; "You wouldn't steal a car...", etc.). But they
didn't move some of the special features for the sequels onto the sequel discs.
I assume they're still on the original's Disc B.
Finally, I checked out "Escape". That was
the worst of the previous DVDs. Again, picture and sound seem improved but I'm
no expert. Also, they use the same menus from the previous DVDs. I finished
off the night kind of full circle, with "Escape"'s "King Kong" - inspired
ending.
I'll just say I like this set. I wish there
was more to it but at least Fox put it out there. It seems to be getting POTA
some notice again because of the unique packaging. For those who don't have any
POTA DVDs it's gold. For those like me who already have most of it, it's nice to
have back-up copies. DVDs can scratch easily. I admit there is a sense of going
to the well too often, and another blown opportunity to bring us deleted scenes
and stuff we haven't seen. If you're not interested in the cartoons you'd
probably be better off just getting the sequels or the "Legacy" set (I'd say
those are worth upgrading to). I'm satisfied with this but I know many won't be.
A high-ticket item like this is a tough call to make. - - - Jeff

.htmlGreat review Jeff, thanks.
My experience was a bit different yesterday. I visited 2 Tower Records and a Borders. None had any of the box sets. The Towers did have the five films individually. The Borders only had the first film.
I finally found the Legacy set at a Best Buy (they didn't have the Ulimate collection though). I got that for around $40.
As far as the Legacy collection there's good and there's bad:
- PLANET: Same menus and animations as the 35th Anniversary edition. However, I've always found the Anniversary transfer a bit muddy. This transfer is an improvement.
- BENEATH: Same menus & extras as the Evolution box set. Transfer is good.
- ESCAPE: Same menus & extras as the Evolution box set. Transfer is good and new stereo soundtrack is great.
- CONQUEST: Same menus & extras as the Evolution box set. Transfer is improvement. Aspect ratio is corrected so you can see the 1983 date on the statue.
- BATTLE: Same menus & extras as the Evolution box set. Transfer is great. The best version of the Extended Edition I've seen yet (with apologies to Hunter), no pink Orangs.
- BEHIND: Exact same version and packaging as the Evolution box set.
Overall I'd give the set a C+/B-. Nothing really new except BATTLE but an improvement over the previous releases. (Points off for the annoying 'Buying Pirate DVDs supports Terrorism' message added to the sequels' DVDs.)

I did buy the Legacy set and got it for less than $40 and feel it
was worth it. I wanted the Extended Battle, as well as the correctly
framed Conquest & stereo Escape. Buying them individually would have
cost over $30, so for a few bucks more I got Planet & Beneath. Since
the transfer of Planet is better than the 35th Anniversary edition
it was a bargin.
Since FOX is promising the Cartoon series seperately, I'm willing to
wait for it and will only buy it if people say the transfer is
better than Hunter's version.

I'm actually willing to buy the separate release of the cartoon series EVEN IF the transfers aren't as good as people say Hunter's are, simply to support the LEGIT release of these things. I only hope Fox is honest when they say it will be released separately. You just can't trust the Fox!
Speaking of HEAD....
Isn't it a coincidence that the only movie the group "The Monkees" put out was titled HEAD and released in the same year as PLANET, 1968. Eerie thing, eh?

It depends on how you look at it. If you have all the discs already,
it was expensive. If you didn't, 14 discs for $125 is less than $9
per disc, which is a good deal.
As for me, it was easier for me to justify it because I had an Amazon
gift certificate for $40, and an unexpected payment from a magazine
that printed an interview I did paid for the rest. ;-) Plus I'll
probably take my old discs to a local used store and get at least $20
or $30 for them.
And to answer Rory's questions, I fully expected that the set wouldn't
have what Fox said, and that the menus would be the same as before.
And I also don't trust that they'll release the 'toons separately,
though I hope they do.

The face on ape head felt like wood but I
guess it's not. The production is described on the "certificate of
authenticity":
"This Authentic Reproduction was developed
through the collaborative efforts of Twentieth Century Fox artisans and "Planet
of the Apes" historians with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship as
is given to the feature film properties. Capturing all the artistry and realism
of the original vision created by John Chambers, this limited edition, official
"Planet of the Apes" bust was Painstakingly created in castaline clay with
filmed images superimposed to ensure that the correct proportions and all the
fine details had been replicated. Each head was then produced by a "roto-cast"
method from a silicon mold of the master sculpt. The face and ears were
hand-painted, the eyes printed in position and the head adhered to the injection
-molded plastic torso. Synthetic hi-pile hair was then stitched and glued onto
the head and green cotton shirt panels sewn together and glued into
position".
The head is limited to 10,000 in the U.S.
Mine is # 06837. - - - Jeff

.html I purchased the smaller EVOLUTION set of just the movies/documentary
Tuesday at CIRCUIT CITY and had a private GO APE festival all
day/night.AT $40 it is as much a bargain as the ULTIMATE APE HEAD
version is an overpriced, overblown extravegance. If the APE HEAD
version made any sense to purchase,I would have.
I thought the transfers on the previous set were excellent to begin
with, but these new anamorphic versions are a notch above... ACCEPT
it looks to me like CONQUEST
is darker and granier.Caesar appears DARK BROWN!!! Does anyone else
notice this? I definatly see a darker differnce from the previous
dvd release.
If you do not own a HiDef or widescreen television,I doubt you will
notice any difference in these new transfers.
I must say,I have never been much of a fan of BATTLE,but the
EXTENDED version in this newly mastered quality has raised it a
notch on my ratings chart.I actually enjoyed it for a change, instead
of cringing my way through.
ESCAPE remains,in my opinion,the most underrated entry.Despite
it's "movie-of-the week" look,it is an impeccable script acted with
uniform excellence by the entire cast.Roddy,Kim,Dillman,Trundy and
Braeden are all just perfect. It also has some of the best dialoge in
the entire series.
PLANET and BENEATH look amazing, although BENEATH seems a shade
LIGHTER then previous.Does anyone agree.
The lack of extras of ANY kind, the re-use of the previous
menus,lousy packaging/artwork,no added trailers...ANYTHING...is an
inexcusable regret.
I read the dvd review Rory submitted where the guy (kid?) gives
BENEATH a D+...ouch! He probably gre up watching MASTERS OF THE
UNIVERSE..what does he know!
We have the films in terrific qiality now (go compare these to the
old LASER DISC transfers!),but it is far from an
ULTIMATE presentation. That has yet to be done.

I agree, I was really hoping for the TV Spots and Stills which there
aren't any, and although I love the set, it's definitely not
something everyone's gonna love.
FOX pretty much holds the "Return" DVDs hostage by forcing you to buy
the whole Ape head set to get them. That means that there's only
10,000 copies of the officially released "Return" dvds, right?
I would've rather bought the new "Battle" and "Return" dvds
separately, but that wasn't an option. Damn my completest ways!

> Next, you open the velcro flap on the back and pull out the DVDs.
I LOVE the DVD holder. It's very compact, about the size of a box
calendar, and holds all 14 DVDs. Talk about portable. Basically it's
a cardboard holder. Some might find it cheap-looking but it does the
trick. I like the graphics on it. But be warned: the infamous "giving
away the statue ending" is all over this. Each DVD has a picture on
the disc for whatever content is on the disc (TV show discs have a TV
show picture, cartoon discs have a cartoon picture, etc.) Purists
should know that they use a picture from "Beneath" on the DVD for the
original movie.
> I made this quick. I just checked out the new stuff. First the
cartoons. I think the picture and sound quality are excellent. You
can hear every monotone voice and overacting perfectly. The image
quality is better than I expected. Just look at those mouths move!

ones as the previous release. NO TV SHOW COMMERCIALS as we were
promised. That's a big disappointment.
> I went to "Battle" to see the quality of the extended scenes. No
loss of quality at all from the main feature. Picture and sound seem
improved on the sequels. (They also have that new "don't pirate" ad
that's been hitting DVDs lately; "You wouldn't steal a car...",
etc.). But they didn't move some of the special features for the
sequels onto the sequel discs. I assume they're still on the
original's Disc B.
> Finally, I checked out "Escape". That was the worst of the
previous DVDs. Again, picture and sound seem improved but I'm no
expert. Also, they use the same menus from the previous DVDs. I
finished off the night kind of full circle, with "Escape"'s "King
Kong" - inspired ending.
> I'll just say I like this set. I wish there was more to it but at
least Fox put it out there. It seems to be getting POTA some notice
again because of the unique packaging. For those who don't have any
POTA DVDs it's gold. For those like me who already have most of it,
it's nice to have back-up copies. DVDs can scratch easily. I admit
there is a sense of going to the well too often, and another blown
opportunity to bring us deleted scenes and stuff we haven't seen. If
you're not interested in the cartoons you'd probably be better off
just getting the sequels or the "Legacy" set (I'd say those are worth
upgrading to). I'm satisfied with this but I know many won't be. A
high-ticket item like this is a tough call to make. - - - Jeff

"Beneath" on the disc from the original (Zira examining Brent and Nova). The
extras disc for "Planet" has the infamous Statue of L spoiler. - - - Jeff

What?!?!?! BENEATH is my favorite of the five films, but if someone
doesn't like it I'm not going to blame it on something completely
unrelated. That'd be like saying "I really thought that book was

Simple solution: Turn the brightness down on your TV!
I don't like how bright the transfer is, but I can live with it. Just make some adjustments before you watch and then enjoy.

I've not played my Legacy DVDs all the way through because I don't want to watch the movies right now, but I have sampled scenes from each one. I've haven't had any of your problems.
This leads me to ask what make of DVD player you have and how old is it? If you have a cheap brand, or even if you don't and it's more than four or five years old, you may have problems with newer discs. I don't know why this is, but it seems to be true. It's something to do with the recording speed they use when authoring the discs. You know, they could be burning the DVDs at x16 speed or higher or something. If you have an older player its circuitry might not be able to handle the more subtle info embedded in your discs. On the other hand, it could be something else entirely. I'm just speculating.
Anyway, I'm glad you can afford to buy both versions!

| Subject: My opinion of the new DVDs |
|
.html .html.htmlOK, here's my official opinion of the new DVD transfers, for what it's worth...
I bought the Legacy Box set from Amazon, and with shipping paid $37.97 for it. I had it in my hands on March 30th.
If you already own the 35th Anniversary edition of PLANET, you can safely skip the new DVD.
From what I've seen and read, whether it's the Ultimate Edition, the Legacy box set, or just separately, the content of the new disc of PLANET is the same: same menus, commentaries, picture and sound transfer.
James has said he thinks PLANET looks better in this new edition, but I can't see any difference and feel there simply isn't one. I've freeze-framed both discs on identical moments in many scenes on both discs and I see nothing different. Same with the audio. Fox has simply put new artwork on the discs themselves, I think.
So... if you're looking to save your money -- and don't want the HEAD -- then you're going to want to go with the separate issue DVDs... of the sequels that is! Although I think it's actually cheaper just to buy the boxed set!
I haven't watched any of these films all the way through yet, only sampled parts of each, but from what I've seen the transfers of the sequels have been improved. Besides now being in anamorphic, the transfers are all sharper with better detail and color fidelity. ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE (even the extended scenes) all look great. There is a minor problem with BENEATH -- the picture is noticeably brighter than it's ever looked before, however turning down the brightness on your monitor remedies this easily enough -- if it bothers you. The color in BENEATH sometimes seems a little over-saturated too (the gorillas' tunics and pants seem much more purple than they do in the PLANET transfer), but for the most part the color is fine.
You may also find that many of the darker scenes in CONQUEST are too dark, but I think this was the look intended when it was made, and again, if it bothers you simply turn up the brightness a bit.
I haven't looked at much of ESCAPE and from what I've seen of BATTLE I can just tell you that everything looks great and the colors really pop. If you have an HD monitor and especially a 16x9 plasma set -- you're really going to go ape looking at these transfers in progressive scan!
Besides the picture transfers you'll definitely want these new sequel transfers for the improved sound and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks on the discs. There is a very apparent improvement in the definition of the stereo separations on all the films, and of course ESCAPE is now in stereo for the first time since its first incarnation on laserdisc over a decade ago -- and the "fake" stereo on that one was horrible! The sound of the new scenes in BATTLE has also been cleaned up quite a bit.
There is one thing with these new sequel soundtracks that's disappointing and it is that the music has still been culled from mono sources. None of the music on these DVDs -- except for PLANET -- has the stereo separation or fidelity of what can be heard on the APES soundtrack CDs (on the DVDs the music is very center channel dominated), but it's still better than what was put out on DVD before because of the added bass that turns up in the .1 channel of the Dolby Digital tracks. It gives all the films greater audio presence. The earth splitting open in BENEATH, for example, will now really rumble the room if you have a subwoofer.
So, that's it for these new DVDs. I haven't seen the cartoon discs and hopefully they'll be made available separately. If not I'll have to ask someone here to sell me some copies. Anyway, until the APES movies come out in true high definition video on Blu-Ray or whatever, this is the best we're probably going to get for a while.
I haven't bothered to talk about the covers and artwork for these new DVDs... because they suck, and in fact, in one case it is EGREGIOUS! But that's for another e-mail.

.html .html.htmlYou all know I'm no great fan of BENEATH, but that doesn't mean I won't defend the film's rights, and I think Fox has egregiously trampled BENEATH's rights with the new DVD cover in the Legacy Box set (and I guess the separate release).
You'll all be able to see what I'm talking about in the attached photo. It's a scan of the insert sheet that's included inside the DVD case. On the back of it are the chapter titles for the film, but the egregious part of the artwork is also repeated on the back cover of the case!
Now, what has got me so mad? Some joker at Fox has apparently thought it would be a cool idea to link the EGREGIOUS (My new favorite word, if you haven't guessed yet) Burton remake-piece-of-crap by putting one of those swords or whatever from the new movie into the hand of a gorilla in General Ursus' army in BENEATH! You'll see it above the head of the gorilla on horseback in the attached photo.
Now, I don't know about you, but for me this is the kind of a thing that's got to be stopped now before it spreads like a deadly disease!
I'd like to request that any APES fan here that cares copy the attached image, put it into an email and send it to: steve.feldstein@...
Tell him quite simply that this is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! AND THAT FOX SHOULD KNOCK IT OFF NOW!

I have to agree.
Beneath is second on my list of favorites (although in alternates with Escape, depending on
my mood) and I grew up watching Masters of the Universe.
I liked Masters of the Universe.

fact that it gets such a bad rap by so many critics over the years
makes me love it just a little more everytime I watch it. I hate when
people compare Franciscus to Heston. The story line is cool, I love
the Mutant aspect, I love subways (that's when the movie starts
getting good), and heck, ANY MOVIE where Charlton Heston blows up the

.htmlI definitely agree that Burton's farce of a re-imagined "POTA" film
should only be connected to the original films by name association
ONLY. Even if the Ultimate DVD Collection HAD NOT included the 2 -
disc release of Burton's "Acid Trip Of The Planet Of The Apes" I
would've still bought it.
But to try and CONNECT the original films to the Burton's by "clever"
use of Adobe Photoshop should be stopped.
My being a huge fan of BENEATH (my second fav film of all time), I
honestly hated the new cover art. Heck, I perferred the Evolution Box
covers a helluva lot more than any of the new ones. I thought the
outside Legacy cover was kinda cool, but my Evolution set is still my
most prized possession.
By the way... the cover of "Planet of the Apes" (1968) in the Legacy
box... it looks more like a cat of some sort than an ape, doesn't it?
