When you say 'original', I'm presuming you mean the shorter version? So
then are both versions included in the Region 2 Legacy set?

Thanks Rory!! I don't know if the design of the LP front cover was to
simulate the Earth exploding/ disintegrating, but I always liked the

That's a good way to post T. Get the necessary back info included, and
then respond. Not only does that save everyone time when scrolling
through the posts/digests, but it doesn't take up as much Group storage
space either.

Even if the reply has been delivered to some of the members
down-under before they get the post. Then, at least when
the post shows up, it will be patently clear what's being
addressed. If I have two pet peeves, they are posting
something without a reference -- like were supposed
to know it's 27 posts ago, and replying with a half
a dozen previous post quoted after the reply.
The former assumes the reader remembers

assumes you reader is a moron who
needs the entire thread in order to

I had forgotten there was a gift set that included a five Series 1 figures. Given the asking price, I'm surprised the didn't make more out of the fact that the name 'Zira' is spelled incorrectly on the box (item # 6051355402 if you're curious).

It's not a drawing but a full frontal shot of the Alpha Omega,
courtesy of Greg P, has been added to the files.

John, thanks to your help, I've started a Roddy thread at Sideshow--for
a technical dickhead like me,that's a big success! I can't post on
Friends and Fugitives at the moment because it won't let me remove an
old bouncing email, so if you could post thses messages on there for
me, that would be much appreciated. Also, I don't have the technical
ability to create an online petition for this--is that something
someone on this Group could help with? John, Scrolls.

    Hi, Chris.

Well, that would have been impossible because this "Kolp" had to be one of the original Kolp's descendants!  The Mendez in the "Forbidden Zone" mini-series was known as Mendez 10.  This Mendez rebelled against his people's Bomb-worship cult and left NYC's ruins, and after a few days of stumbling around in the desert, he then entered some type of a green area where he was found by citizens of the Primacy community.  Primacy had a mixed population of humans and apes.

As I recall, it almost seemed like they were trying to pass the character

Yes...she has an extensive collection of props and costumes....Years ago she owned a hotel and casino in Vegas and had a "show" built around them....I believe she might have a museum somewhere now that the hotel was sold but I'm not sure....In my vague memory I think she even had some ape costumes but my mind might be making that up!

watching the 5 Planet of the Apes films with his wife. In a subplot 2

      Subject: Legacy Box Set
      .html
      Hi all,

I recently got my copy of 'The Legacy Collection' box set, and I had a
few random thoughts that I wanted to throw by everyone just for the sake
      of discussion.

      1) The description of BENEATH on the back that says "...including a
subterranean world of highly advanced humans who worship a WMD". A
WMD???? That's such a term of the moment (could we say that since they
believed their religious doctrine was correct that they practiced
"truthiness"?), and I really don't think it works in the text there. As
many times as I've read the previous description that was used on the
various video releases ("... who worship a Cobalt bomb..."), I think I
would've rather seen that. Of course, that was never correct either.

      2) The gorilla on the BENEATH artwork holding the POTA 2001 sword looks
cool, but again it's kind of a revisionist thing and not really
appropriate. Ditto for the astronaut suits on the back of the ESCAPE DVD.

      3) Why use characters and scenes (Aldo on the chapter sheet of CONQUEST,
the bleeding Lawgiver on the front of the PLANET box) that didn't appear
in the respective films the DVDs contain?

      4) I take it the five symbols across the top of the box are supposed to
represent the five films, but has anyone deciphered the language the same
way that it was figured out that E=MC2 was on the tunics in the first
      film?

      5) I took a look at BATTLE, and it appears to be the same exact version
as what was released on the Japanese LD Box Set and broadcast on the Fox
Movie Channel (as well as on regular television over the years). John, I
know you pointed out that the scene was out of sequence, but I believe
it's always been that way ever since the footage was restored. From my
      previous post:

      >>I watched both the Japanese LD version and the Fox Movie Channel
broadcast, and in both version Virgil shoots the camera shortly after the
scene where he's talking about different futures ("It's a blind choice,
but you can change lanes"). He shoots the camera, apologizes, and then
MacDonald says that they "...we still have time to go to work" (or
something like that) and walks over to a stack of film canisters. It cuts
to a scene of the mutant guards approaching, then back to a scene of the
trio attempting to leave the City.

      However...

A few minutes back into the film after the trio has gotten into the
archives section at the scene where MacDonald says "Now we'll find the
film we're looking for under the heading of...", it appears to be a
continuation of what he was saying after "...we still have time to go to
work". In fact, he's standing at the same exact stack of film canisters.
So my guess here is that when the extra footage was being included in the
original TV broadcast version, it was simply edited in at the wrong point
in the film. What's also noticeable is Kolp's lack of interest when Alma
reports that the camera was destroyed, almost if at that point in the
story he wasn't aware of the trio of visitors. Mendez is also
      conspicuously absent. <<

I'm now convinced that the extra footage was just edited in at the wrong
place originally, which means that it was most likely a studio decision
and neither J. Lee Thompson nor whomever was running APJAC Productions at
      the time was consulted.

Anyone have access to the hardware/software necessary to reedit the film?
It'd be interesting to see the scenes all put back into their proper
sequence, which could easily be done by consulting the screenplay on
      Hunter's site.

Hey, all-I've been wondering about this for a while now. When Zaius and Taylor have their final confrontation, Zaius tells Taylor, "All my life I've known of your coming and dreaded it." Now, was that just a general reference to a lifelong fear that a talking human would show up-or did Zaius in fact know the whole story of how his "Crazy, upside-down civilization" got started? When Taylor is being dragged out of Zaius's office for example, and he's screaming, "What are you afraid of, Doctor?" Zaius can be seen looking down at his desk...perhaps because he knows that Taylor's arrival will mean the destruction of the world? I ask this because if this is a closed time loop, then Zaius, as the supreme scientific and religious authority, would have had complete access to knowledge that was forbidden to the general ape population. This might also have included the knowledge that Zira and Cornelius would go back in time and start the series of events that led to the creation of the Planet of the Apes. Maybe he even saw the old tapes-or copies of them-that were made in Escape and shown in Battle. Could it be that he was trying to save them and keep them from repeating history by trying to silence them? Or could it be that he had resigned himself to what had to happen?

What did Doctor Zaius really know, and when did he know it?

The apes' religion is clearly based on human ones, particularly the
Bible-I'm guessing that at some point they must have still been
familiar enough with human religion to copy it for their own purposes.
The mutants treat the Alpha-Omega bomb as their god, but there seems
to be some confusion about the role of the Lawgiver. By all accounts,
the original Lawgiver was a peace-loving ape who wanted apes and
humans to live together; how did this get twisted into a hatred of
      humans?

Well since it isn't mentioned, we can never know what he knew.
But it does seem that the Orangs are the social elite and as the

Nobody really knows, but it would be a great fanfic to flesh this out beyond the “Zaius knows about the past” level. I can imagine a backstory where he reads the description of Caesar’s journey to the dead city and what he encountered, followed by instructions by his ancestors telling him what to do and what the name of the astronaut from the past would be, along with his thoughts about what he would find. It’s unlikely he could have viewed the actual tapes because a) the recording was in the city, which was at the heart of a Forbidden Zone (maybe not the one in Beneath, however) and b) a battery operated taper recorder and reel to reel tapes weren’t designed to last 2000.

That assumes that what C & Z read in the Sacred Scrolls and later revealed to the Commission in the past was either a lie, and/or different from what Zaius actually knew. If he really knew the ultimate role of C & Z in creating his world, he could have preserved it by simply telling them about what their unborn child would accomplish. If they knew that they were the unwitting creators of the society they despised, wouldn’t they have tried to stay far away from Milo’s spaceship and instead stayed as close to Ape City as possible (or alternatively, somehow take part in the Forbidden Zone expedition)?

Now here’s a paradox I just realized: in Planet and Beneath, it’s very clear that the general Ape Society has no knowledge that a human civilization existed from which the apes rebelled. Yet Cornelius makes a point of saying somethlng like “….on an historic day commemorated by my species and fully documented in the Sacred Scrolls” there emerged the ape that said no to humans: Aldo. If Ape Society doesn’t know that man’s civilization preceded the apes’, then why would they commemorate such a day? The only explanation: C & Z are from a different timeline than the C & Z in the first two movies! Unless the commemoration is a secret holiday of the initiated into the Sacred Scrolls secret society or some such thing.

One explanation: the Cornelius and Zira in Planet are from a different timeline than the Cornelius and Zira in Beneath! But both encountered Taylor .

        That makes MY head spin.

Excellent observation about the time loop.

IMHO I don't think Dr Zaius has any specific knowledge of Taylor, just
some general, hand-me-down knowledge that the planet was once ruled by
          people like him.

Somewhere in his history, someone (The Lawgiver?) saw fit to leave a
warning to ever be on guard for any kind of resurgence of intelligent
humans but I doubt that he left a list of names. There are the public
warnings ('Beware the beast, Man') and no doubt some private/secret
ones that only the privilidged, ruling class, get to see.

I've often wondered what happened to poor old Landon after the hunt.
Did Zaius know for sure what he was? Did they have a conversation
before he ordered the lobotomy? Or did Zaius just have a hunch and
acted before the astronaut ever fully regained conciousness?

And why, do you think, did he let Taylor go free at the end?

If the Revolution comic is canon, Zaius knew a lot, because he saw the
ancient magazine on Cornelius' dig and didn't seem too surprised.I
wonder what Mendez knew? Did he know detonating the Bomb was the end of
the world? He seems pretty grim about it if all he thought was that it

          I don't think we'll ever know Landon's story, but it doesn't
really matter to the main plot.  If I had to venture a guess
I'd say part of the story was true.  Landon may well have
been injured in the hunt.  But one word muttered in his
sleep after being knocked unconscious was enough to
ensure that he would be lobotomized, and gelded too.
I think Zaius let Taylor go for precisely the reason he
said.  He didn't expect him to survive in the Zone.

I don't think it matters how specific the info is.
He knows Man once ruled the planet.  But I
don't think it was especially specific, since
he thought Taylor was a mutant from the
forbidden zone.  It makes sense that there
had been knowledge of the Forbidden Zone
Mutants since the time of the Lawgiver and
that the apes in Zaius position knew about
them and suspected that there might be
contact with them again someday.  That
was far easier for Zaius to believe than
a man from the past in a spaceship.
And even if he had never seen the
Statue Of Liberty in his life, he no
doubt knew about the human city
up the coast, hence his warning
to Taylor when he left with Nova.

In "Beneath" when they're setting the bomb's yield, they seemed to be under the impression that the bomb would destroy both them and Ape City, but not necessarily the whole world. I got the impression that they weren't aware of the bomb's true destructive power, in fact, their reference to it as a weapon of "Peace" (Deterrence) plus Taylor's statment that they didn't know what they had would seem to bear this out.

I wonder, though, did all of the Mutants know, or was this something
only the Mendez Dynasty knew? His 'everything necessary' is pretty
chilling if they ALL knew this was mass suicide. It's interesting that
in Battle(especially the restored version!) it's Mendez who knows what
the Bomb is, and explains it to Alma, who DIDN'T know.I see Alma as the
matriarch of the Mendez Dynasty, and the keeper of the ultimate
secret. The Mutants have always interested me--maybe I need treatment!

Z&C tell Brent that he has to be careful or he'll wind

apparently Landon didn't last too long!

            I think I just got lucky,guys!
I found a typestyle called ''Tantrumtongue'',and it bears a VERY close
            resemblance to ''Sacred Scrolls''!
I forget where I found it;just on some desperate search in the WWW
            Forbidden Zones,wandering aimlessly.
But it looks good,so I'm pretty ,amazingly, happy with it.
Thanks for trying to help though.

            Hey T,

I use both on a daily basis and in my humble opinion Macs are superior
(even doctor Zaius thinks so, check out the 'think different' ad in
the files) BUT... it all really depends on what it is you want to do
with the machine. PCs are far better supported and cheaper but are
more succeptable to viruses. Macs are made of sterner stuff, more
intuitive and are generally better for any kind of graphics work.

Be aware, only the latest Macs with the Intel chips can run Windows
(without an emulator) and you will still be required to supply your
            own Windows system software.

There is also a "Dark Crimes" set (noir and related). Search on "50 pack" in Amazon or DeepDiscountDVD or eBay to find them. I bought several sets and they are really great deals. I have listings of the films in each if anyone is interested. Some of the sci-fi is hilarious.

Never heard of that before either...I bought some artwork from a proposed Lost in Space cartoon spin-off from the 1998 movie but I never had proof of that story either. This ape looks like an existing body with an ape head hastily added.

Reading my first reply I realized I made this seem like a counterfeit item but I don't think it is! I think it was created to tie in to the Burton APES movie not a TV series and is a real prototype.

Everything really.  I've seen dedicated multi-media entertainment PCs.
They run about a grand and a half.  But I'd like it to run the whole
              house.  Do I have a smart-home?  No.  I don't even have a house
yet.  Not even a home theater.  But I have to start somewhere.
But I will be running a lot of processor intensive programs,
such as visual and multi-track audio editing software.
I need as much speed and memory as I can get.
Sure it would be nice to shell out a few grand
for a super computer.  But then how would I
buy the software.  And I'd like to grow with
me.  No point in buy a good box if it'll be
obsolete in just a couple years.  I've had
this one since 2001, but I've out grown
it.  I doubled the memory once, and
              added a DVD, and all-in-wonder.
But it's time for a new one.
But to get a PC or Mac?
              That is the question.

              Dave

I think Zaius realized that Taylor didn't believe he was on earth and the statue of Liberty would be a shock. He probably also thought Taylor didn't have much of a chance of survivng. Elaine

The newer version of the iMacs have a intel chip which is 5x faster
than a PC. You can buy a Mini Mac for about 600 dollars, only draw
back is that you don't get a monitor with it.

One of the more surprising things about Revolution is Caesar's journals. After seeing Conquest, one would think that he was actually looking forward to man's downfall so that he could build his new world (the degree of equality for humans beyond the "good servants/useful to us" level is subject to debate until the end of Battle, at the very least).

However, I get the impression that his initial dream was for apes to become civilized and explore the universe with technology, philosophy, science, etc, rather than to control the world because it was their destiny.  The current main plot thread in Revolution is covering how he's does his part to stop the nuclear holocaust from happening -- and apprently failing due to the counter-insurgency team led by Kolp.

Meanwhile the President of the US is holed up with military types futilely trying to prevent the ape rebellion from spreading, and the nukes are staring to go off around the world. It's very poignant to get that sense of "roads not taken", and how events can go out of control due to the ineptness of leadership and the laws of unintended consequences. A different US leader, with less baggage about human superiority, would have had the depth to have sought out Caesar and tried to diffuse the situation. Not that it might have stopped the ape rioting, but it might have stopped the nukes from escalating out of control around the world.

The irony is that the Caesar of the Revolution series would likely have been repulsed by the anti-technology, anti-growth world that his successors built. He's just as much a product of the modern world as any of the humans, of course (using the Internet to communicate, living in a modern apartment with Lisa, etc.). I hope the series continues to show how he moved from the "modern" world to accepting a world with treetop homes and primitive agriculture. The nuclear war by itself couldn't have been the only reason, unless they really did have to flee the city with nothing but the Ape Management clothes on their backs.

We're quite specifically going to deal with the difference between the "technological" apes of the Boulle novel, and the "primative" apes of the Jacobs film series in the backup story in issue #6.  The Caesar in our story is very much a technological creature, and the Caesar in Battle clearly has given all that stuff up (or at least, left it all behind, since he has to travel BACK into the ruined city to see his parents on video).

                        And by the way...

I just got in the first pages of art from Kent Burles for his story in our series, and WOW, WOWOW!  I couldn't be happier.  He does a pretty cool lawgiver, and a way-cool wild human.  But who wins the cage match?  Maybe Kent should consider drawing comics for a living, no?

Issue 4... (counts on fingers) that's two thirds of the way in by my
reck'nin - and the world as we know it continues to unravel.
"Unconfirmed detonations over Moscow..." So matter-of-fact and yet so
chilling, no need at all to mention the probable millions dead and
inevitable escalation. It's these chilling moments, the stories
between the lines that make `Revolution' so much more than a brief
                        read-and-forget experience.

The back up strip features IMHO the best art in the title yet. It
takes skilled writers to juggle your emotions and sympathies from
frame to frame like that, and a brave ones to present a shocking
sequence of events that will leave a bad taste in the mouths of most
readers. While some may wonder at the identity of the girl cop's
father I'm just left admiring the talents of professional storytellers
                        at work.

                        Viva la revolution!
