Well, Charlie made out like a bandit.
Not only did he get back at Locke for
punching him, and Eko for dissing him,
but he's back with his girlfriend. And
that explosion couldn't have damaged
his hearing much more than it already
was, being bass player for Drive Shaft!

Islam. Like the Lawgiver, he is not God or divine, but is God's
messenger to his chosen people.
Looking at Beneath, both the Apes and the Mutants believe that they are
chosen by God. Not a very different situation than we have on the
planet today.

two religious ceremonies in "Beneath"; the army praying before they leave
and the mutant bomb worship. Ape City is in the Middle East. - - - Jeff

Islam. Like the Lawgiver, he is not God or divine, but is God's
messenger to his chosen people.
Looking at Beneath, both the Apes and the Mutants believe that they are
chosen by God. Not a very different situation than we have on the
planet today.

Greetings! This is my first post.
There is only one reason that the gorillas are allowed by the Council to invade the Forbidden Zone - famine. The famine in Ape City was apparently caused by the rapidly growing human population constantly pillaging the crops (remember the apes are all vegetarians). The apes have learned through various reports by sentries that after centuries of inactivity, there is indeed life in the Forbidden Zone - and that that life must have food in order to survive.
Ursus' underlying motive in his speech is to find food for his people. His jingoistic rhetoric is used solely to rouse his gorilla army into an invasion ... after all, the gorillas would be much more willing to march into war against a military threat to their civilization rather than the more mundane need to find food sources...

All this talk about the Lawgiver now has me wondering how the Apes
percieved thier God. In the prologue to Battle, John Huston's Lawgiver
makes several references ("In the beginning God created beast and Man.")
'His' God would appear to be one that is shared between the species
and Caeser is referred to as a Christ-like saviour ("God, in his wrath
sent the world a saviour).
Of course the world of 'Battle' is a vastly different from that seen
in 'Planet'.
But... I wondered, is that why the Lawgiver became, perhaps, more
celebrated than a God? Because in the 'great book' were there constant
references to Man and his history of war and violence and once
dominance over the world? Did the orangutans supress belief in a God
and favour instead the teachings of a manufactured and easily
manipulated Lawgiver figure that could basically teach whatever they
wanted him to?

I'm not so sure that Caeser is Christ-like in the eyes of the Apes. Christ is the Son of God and therefore divine. Caeser is not noted as having any God-like powers. I many ways he is more like Moses. Sent by God, but not a God.

I've always imagined that it was Taylor's arrival that utimately lead to the war in Beneath. Why would Ursus send scouts into the Forbidden Zone if it was considered a lifeless wasteland. However, if Ursus shared Zaius' opinion that Taylor was from a jungle beyond the Forbidden Zone, then it would make sense to send scouts to find it.

from pre-war Masses to the Mutants' religo-centric society.I'm starting
to view The Lawgiver, in the light of recent posts, as St Peter to
Caesar's Christ.Caesar must have taken on a god-like status, given his
origins and the massive improvement he brought to Apedom.I wonder
whether, on his death, someone like Virgil became the first Lawgiver, a
role that then stayed in the Orang line through perpetuity, much like

an excellent cast.It deals with important issues of war and race,
religion and destiny and is also an excellent adventure movie. If Battle
is anywhere near 'unwatchable', then there are a dozen Star Treks, a

In ESCAPE, Cornelius tells Hasslien al about the pre-history of the Apes. Cornelius knows about the plague that wiped out all dogs and cats, he knows about man's attempts to domesticate and eventual enslave the apes...he even knows about Aldo saying "No."
When did Cornelius discover this information? At the end of POTA, Cornelius only suspects that some form of intelligent humanoid life existed before his own civilization. In BENEATH, we don't see too much of Cornelius - but sometime before ESCAPE, he knows everything.
I would conjecture that after the events of POTA, Dr Zaius reluctantly confides in Cornelius the Lawgiver's "secret scrolls" -- no doubt part of some deal between Zaius and the chimps. This deal would keep Cornelius and Zira out of jail and prevent a very unwanted (by Zaius) public heresy trial. Its at this point that C&Z confide in Dr Milo and attempts to salvage the ship begin.
Could the "secret scrolls" have also held some information about earth's destruction? The gorilla war, the Alpha Omega bomb -- fragments of C&Z's own testimony to Hasslien some 2000 plus years earlier!
What else would have prompted them to leave the planet?
There is much to ponder....

If he knew the future, it would explain
the dictatorship of the organgutans more than just passed-down knowledge of man’s
destructiveness in the distant past. I always found it suspect that the apes
would be so afraid of humans just based on something that their technological ancestors
did long ago. Without any overt external threat, it would be natural for any
creature to relax. If centuries of dealing with nothing but an increasingly
primitive “enemy” wouldn’t do it, what would? Not only that,
but the apes were presented as being in stasis: chimps engaging in controlled
scientific activity, gorillas kept busy with human hunts to dull the edge, and
orangutans keeping things balanced with as the religious and political elite.
Very 1984-ish.
On the other hand, if what was passed down
was “humans almost destroyed the Earth and a weapon they created is
highly likely to destroy it in the future”, then the Sacred Scrolls and
Zaius’ reaction to Taylor
makes far more sense IMHO. In that case, Taylor
might be exactly what he feared: a human that could find and trigger Man’s
ancient destructive weapon, and his reasoning for going to the Forbidden Zone
might be to avoid the future that led to Earth’s destruction.
In that case, the ending of Beneath is
even more poignant: Zaius would have KNOWN what the Bomb could do but couldn’t
overcome his reactive hatred of intelligent humans enough to stop the one
person that was capable of disarming the Bomb. Definitely an ending worthy of
the Middle East (ala the tale of the
scorpion). The winning strategy for Zaius would have been the opposite of what
he did: getting Taylor ’s
help to explore the Forbidden Zone before the gorillas got there first.

There's a whole'missing' movie there, to be sure. As has been
discussed before how much time goes by between the end of Planet and
the start of Beneath? Not much in which to salvage and learn how to
fly an 'alien' starship.
I've always been of the mind that Milo discovered Taylor's ship soon
after it apparantly sank. That a pocket of air or some kind of
anti-sinking device (don't leave home without one) brought it back to
the surface before too much damage was done. Of course this doesn't
credit Taylor and Co with much intelligence but it allows Milo, on an
unauthorised expedition, to find and begin work on the ship.
Milo would have known it was a human ship because Stewart would have
still been in her cryo-bed and he would have known that three more
crew were unaccounted for. Perhaps he returned to Ape City for
supplies to help study the craft and witnessed Taylor's break for
freedom and his curse of 'Get your stinking paws off me...' Perhaps he
put two and two together and then approached Zira to arrange an
audience with 'Bright eyes' and things progressed from there?

Okay, here's what I was thinking...
I don't think Milo, C & Z could have resurected the ship alone I think
there may have been far more chimps involved. When Milo discovers
Taylor's ship this leads him to form an alliance with Z & C. This
leads to more scientific minds getting invoved and the chimpanzee
faction see the chance, in Taylor's ship, to bring down the orangutan
administration.
Maybe the original plan wasn't a flight into outer space but over the
skies of Ape City or over the heads of the invading gorilla army.
Maybe the plans were changed at the last minute by the sight of a
mushroom cloud and approaching shock wave?
Of course all this is fanboy conjecture and nothing in any of the
movies supports it but it is a lot of fun.

I'm convinced Milo knew the future of the Earth.
He probably knew more than Zira & Conelius.
He was a top scientist, and no doubt privy to
most of Zaius' secrets. How else could he
get into the Zone and raise the ship without
any interference from the Ministry of Science.
I'm sure he knew Earth was doomed and told
Zira and Cornelius. Zaius' visit to them only
confirmed what they had been told. But Milo
probably couldn't run the ship on his own, and
it would be pointless to escape by himself into
the unknown. So who's he going to ask to go
with him? And who would believe him? The
only other apes who know the truth. And, like
Taylor's expedition, it's an Adam and Eve
mission. Who better to take than a couple
who are expecting a child? Makes sense.

Yes, possibly. On the other hand I would think that security
would
be extremely tight on the eve of war. Then again extra tight
security
doesn't always mean extra security, having heard about the security
slip ups of late, I'm sure we're all aware of that fact, being in the

For those who think the comic book movie fad
can't sustain much longer, and now Fox can go back to more important things
(like an "Apes" sequel), think again. "USA Today" had an article on June 2nd
talking about the various "X-Men" spinoffs in the works. "X-Men 3" 's insane
opening weekend ($120 million) would seem to mandate this approach.
First of all, there's superstar Wolverine's
own movie, set to go into production next year. Then there's a "Magneto" movie
in the script stage. Fox head Hutch Parker says they are also considering a
movie about the "X-Men" kids at the school. And there's a character called "Emma
Frost" (her skin can turn to diamonds) that wasn't in the movies but director
David O. Russell ("Three Kings") is said to be interested in.
On top of that is the "Fantastic Four 2"
that is coming to theaters next summer. Jessica Alba said recently that it will
feature the character Silver Surfer that, yes, Fox wants to give his own movie
series.
In short, it looks like Fox will keep it's
own POTA property caged and instead labor at the House of Marvel. Move along,
there's nothing to see here. - - - Jeff

.html.html
At the beginning of CONQUEST, we see that ape labor has become a necessary evil in this society. However, there are reports (before Caesar even starts his revolution) that there are a great rise in the number of ape disobedience and unauthorized gatherings.
But how did apes become so intelligent within only 20 years after Cornelius, Milo, and Zira'a arrival on earth?
I would conjecture that after the apeonaut's deaths, there bodies were put into storage and used -- from time to time -- by scientists for study. Years later, the plague from space killed man's pets and apes were then used as a substitute. It was not long after this that is was realized the Apes could be trained for manual labor, however training them and conditioning them was costly and time consuming -- and their abilities were limited at best.
It would be at this point that the company or companies that procured the ape slave trade discovered that the genes of Cornelius, Zira and Milo could be used to breed a new race of apes -- eugenically programmed to learn quicker than your average ape.
Of course, the government approved of this -- no doubt the lobbying dollars of these powerful ape brokers, outweighed the prophecies of C&Z regarding the downfall of mankind.
By the time Caesar arrives in the city, I would think that there were already isolated incidents of apes who could speak. These apes were rounded up and destroyed immediately by the police. Why else would the police be so ready to accept the possibility that it was Caesar who could have made the outburst?
It was too late when man realized that these apes were now too smart -- there was no way to remove all the apes from society without the economy collapsing. All they could do was to create a "police state" and destroy any and all apes that were too intelligent (classified as "disobedient") as they surfaced. Caesar is really only the spark that sets off the forest fire that would be the ape revolution.

DC Comics and POTA
I remember from the Justice League DC comic an evil intelligent gorilla named General Zog (I think). I thought for sure that Boulle and Serling had infuenced this conception, but a google search on batman+gorilla turned up a running motif of intelligent gorillas in comics of the 50s and 60s. Human brain transplants and such. (I think the Nazis did some experiments in this area.) As the writer on the following site observes, "gorillas = sales." Apparently POTA won recognition when it did not just due to the space race but also they heydey of apes in the pulp market.

Flash? Gorillas on covers sell comics has always been an accepted fact
in comicdom and at one stage Carmine Infantino at DC was looking at
getting the Apes franchise and doing a POTA series. For whatever reason,
they decided, instead, to go with a different but very similar series,
Kamandi, featuring talking apes and The Statue of Liberty, as done by
Jack Kirby(who also, in the early eighties, did some designs for an
Apes animated series based on the live action tv series).Personally,
I'm glad Marvel got the Apes gig.John, Scrolls. <.html

I don't think Zaius let them escape, I think he just didn't want a public trial.

Who know how many Gorillas were left in Ape City? Even if there were only a few, they had the guns.

Very well put Bill. This explanation makes the most sense. Maybe the companies were InGen and Cyberdyne ;-)

Not to sure about this. If there were other talking apes, Breck wouldn't assume that Caesar was the son of C&Z.

human of all the astronauts who landed on the POTA.Doug Moench took the

there were plans to feature Derek again.Herb Trimpe's Apes were always

Read below, too bad it wont happen though.
Tony
Kamandi Animated Series
One of Jack Kirby's most oddball creations of the '70s was a
science fiction comic series called Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth. It
told the adventures of the last young man in a world ruled over by intelligent
animals... like Planet of the Apes with dogs, lions, tigers, bears, etc.
added in. Having said that, is it possible this esoteric comic might make the
jump to animated TV series? It will if Bruce Timm (Batman Beyond) has
anything to say about it. While talking to the Detroit News Comic Book
Continuum, Timm revealed that he had already made a pitch to Kids' WB which was
turned down. Timm says, "Actually, Kamandi is not dead. In fact, we are
looking at possibly doing a Kamandi pilot for Cartoon
Network."
Timm also revealed details of his pitch saying, "I've always
thought that Kamandi would make just an excellent kids cartoon, [b]ut I
actually went back and re-read them and went, 'Wow, this is really pretty
violent.' But it's fantasy violence. It's Jonny Quest on the Planet of
the Apes. That's kind of how I pitched it to them. And they went, 'Oooh!'
and they liked that idea."
Unfortunately, they ended up turning it down because the series
wouldn't appeal to female viewers as well as Timm's insistence on animating the
series so it looked exactly the way Jack Kirby drew
it. <.html <.html

|
.html This is just me having fun so please don't anyone go taking it too
seriously
I watched the new King Kong last night and in an alcohol-fuelled
moment of insanity realised what it was really about
Planet of the Apes.
King Kong himself represents the Planet of the Apes franchise and what
better way to represent the saga of that simian world than with a
giant ape? Okay, it's not very subtle but hot damn, it works for me!
So there's the franchise, towering over everything that surrounds it.
Nothing comes close, not the sequels or any Lucasfilm produced
pretender to the throne. It is king over all it surveys...
Enter Skull Island - Just like the Ape franchise Skull Island has been
pretty much forgotten about. There are the occasional rumours of its
existence but it's lost in time just waiting to be rediscovered and
who better than to attempt to rediscover a lost franchise? How about a
bunch of Hollywood moviemakers. The movie company that employs Carl
Denham is obviously 20th Century Fox, they have no clear idea of what
it is that they want, only that they want it to make money and fast.
They control the purse strings but the vision and the nuts and bolts
of movie making they leave to someone else, someone expendable should
things go wrong.
Along with the film crew travels Anne Darrow, now is your typical
Planet of the Apes, fan. She's in awe of the saga but willing to
become fiercely protective of it when the occasion arises, she will
sacrifice anything no matter what the cost to herself, she loves it,
in a way that few can understand.
Carl Denham, the movie producer is your typical dumbass promoter who
has no love for Planet of the apes at all but merely sees it as an
opportunity to meet his own ends. He will exploit Apes/Kong
mercilessly and selfishly not caring one jot about the subject matter
or who gets hurt along the way. It's all about HIM and of course if
the franchise is entrusted into the care of such a person it can only,
after attempting to scale great heights, tumble and fall.
