No! Don't say that!

By the time of PLANET and BENEATH everything out west was dead, the only simian civilization that remained was confined to a few "greenbelts" in what was the eastern US, and humanity had regressed to an animal state.

Most women don't show for the first few months. Zira may have been
showing but it was hard to see under the bulky Ape dress.

I've never seen covers for the TV movies, but there are some cool covers on Kass' site for the TV series that could be adapted.

There are no Ape Actors in the group. At least that I know of. There
are the writers of the Revolution comic series, Ty Templeton & Joe
O'Brien, as well as the Joe Russo, the writer of 'Planet of the Ape
Revisited' and SF writer Robert J. Sawyer.

Yeah, I much prefer hardcover for its permanency, but a TPB will do I
guess. better than the individuals. i'm definitely buying it
regardless of what cover it has, because i really want Empire to come out.

The colony! I like that idea... but...

If a colony separated from Ape City along 2800 A.C... well, are 2
centuries enough time to develop a civilization on the WEST?

And what's about the SECRET SCROOLS? Are they mentioned in the
series?

Yes it is political allegory and original, not from a film or book.
What exactly don't you understand?

Most women don't show for the first few months. Zira may have been
showing but it was hard to see under the bulky Ape dress.

I don't think the events of ESCAPE cover more than three or four weeks, therefore Zira would have had to have been pretty far along in her pregnancy.  OK, now let's work backwards...

The events of BENEATH seem to me to take not much more than three or four days!  Therefore, Zira is pregnant in BENEATH.

How much time is there between the end of PLANET and Nova coming across Brent's ship in BENEATH?  I wouldn't think very long. A week?  Maybe less, perhaps a little more?  At your most generous, I would say you could only allow maybe three weeks between PLANET and BENEATH, because how long are Taylor and Nova supposed to have wandered the wastelands, and then Nova by herself, especially when you consider what some here believe; that the area of Cornelius' map only shows a topography around what was NYC?

So, not only is Zira pregnant in BENEATH -- she's pregnant in PLANET!  THAT IS.... if you look at the film series as a total narrative entity, and not as disjointed stories based on the previous entries.

Of course, what we have are further series continuity problems from writer Paul Dehn and the other filmmakers.  What they wanted you to accept, without really thinking about it, was that in BENEATH you see that Cornelius and Zira are now married and that would be when they would have conceived, and in ESCAPE the pregnancy is brought to full term.  They ignore the fact that a pregnancy would cover a time-frame of seven to nine months, probably because of the restrictions that the story -- and budget -- of ESCAPE imposed.

When I watch ESCAPE, I don't see a story that's unfolding over the course of many months.  As I said above, it seems to me not to be more than three or four weeks.  Do I think, therefore, that when I watch PLANET Zira is already pregnant by Cornelius?  No.  I no more think that than I do that General Ursus is just outside the frame, or that there is a society of human mutants living in the ruins of NYC just a few hundred miles away, or that the world I'm enjoying in the first film is going to blow up in a little while.  I take each film SEPARATELY, and except that there are simply continuity errors that can't be accounted for -- though others may try, but then I'm that's opening an old can of worms.

I've started re-reading the 3 novels, inspired by the new dvd
release. The novels are a better Apes experience than the cartoons--the
novels have lots of death and violence, racist commentary and, most
importantly, Nova gets her kit of and is bathed nude by Bill in the
third one(seriously). It helps me if I envisage Bill as James
Franciscus, Jeff as Austin Stoker and Judy as Pamela Anderson. I was
wondering has anybody ever seen any scripts for these episodes--we've
got loads of the live action scripts, but I've never heard of any for
the animated series.John, Scrolls.

Just the shot of the jump was done there, the "rock pool" at the old Century Ranch.  If you freeze-frame the shot in BUTCH CASSIDY you can also see that a matte painting was involved.

No that's not it.  That shot was taken on location in Calorado or Utah.

I've just looked at my BUTCH CASSIDY DVD.  The matte shot taken at the Century Ranch is in Chapter 16 at 1 hour, 14 seconds.  It's the shot of the two figures falling from the cliff and landing in the water below.  If you freeze-frame it and then move frame by frame, you'll see that the rock cliffs on either side of the shot are actually matte paintings.  The two stunt men then land into what could be the rock pool, or maybe some other damned up area of Malibu Creek.  You'll also notice that the water is being artificially made to look like it has rapids.

On the subject of matte shots( do they still do these nowadays--they
were always one of the more convincing special effects) I have a
theory that two of the Apes tv series episodes were delayed, and
shown out of sequence in both production and story order as a result,
because they were the onlt two that were waiting for matte shots. The
Legacy and The Liberator were both earlier in production than
transmission order, with The Legacy, in particular, giving the game
away when Burke says he can't remember when he last saw a city,
having seen one two weeks earlier in The Trap.I think, in a hurried
schedule, they were waiting for matte shots! John, Scrolls.

It's been a while since I watched them, but I thought the TV series
looked as good as I expected it to the first time around. But the
name of the game for all the studios is to get us to repurchase over

I agree with Hunter on that end. I tought the Apes TV series looked
awesome, given it's age, when first released on DVD. I have a 16MM
print of the deception that was proably released around the time the
series ended and the DVD looks better than the 16MM print that I have.
But, expect FOX to do something with this release to get you to re-buy
them. Sucker me did buy a set because I dig the TV series. SO, if
there are any new added details, I will let you know.

You know, we really ought to tear off a letter to Fox about how those of us
that got the ULTIMATE PLANET OF THE APES COLLECTION in the head have found
out that a part of it was released later not only improved in quality but
      with added value material.

I'm not too upset on a personal basis since the head was a present but it
was really bad form to do it this way. And yes, I got the seperate release
too and it's everything that I was expecting in the head.

Here I was thinking they lost most of the 35mm prints and instead they just
rushed it out to be in the head.

I don't remember if it was on a Fox website or where, but the specifications for what would be in the Ultimate "Ape Head" Edition were laid out and there was a kind of cryptic note about the cartoon series, the exact words of which I no longer remember.

Anyway, even though at first I was going to purchase the "Head" thing, I quickly saw that everything would eventually be available separately and realized that basically you were being asked to buy the "Head" and then get these DVDs with it too.  It was shoddy.

But the "little" Lawgiver statue can be seen in the first episode.  (How about a screen capture, James?)  Still, I don't consider the TV show part of the film series.

Here is the one from Hunter's site.

      tvseries012.jpg

It seems to be just set dressing. It's not a prop that anyone interacts with or comments on. I imagine they just raided the prop department for anything from the films that could be used in the series.

With all the talk about remastering, etc. I was curious what the
average number of copies of POTA might be, that everyone has

POTA is second only to STAR WARS (only because of the Number of

I am up to 12 copies.

Well, it looks like it didn't.  In fact, it's pretty funny looking.  Years ago I asked the guys at Apemania if they planned to do a replica of the "little Lawgiver."  They said they very much wanted to, but it was in the hands of a collector who wouldn't give it up to make molds.  Now that I see how it looks I'd rather just have what Sideshow provided.

Save your money ape freinds; this new release is the same as the
original release. The ONLY difference is that the box has been
reduced to slim cases. Everything else about the set is the same as
the origianl release. Don't know where Amazon came up with the
extended time from the origianl release. There are no new features
      or anything.

Thanks, John. For those in the U.S., I haven't seen it yet, but a
friend told me he saw the set at Wal-Mart for $19.99. I don't know
how that compares elsewhere (I never looked), but that's $15 cheaper
than the first release, if memory serves.

I remember going to the video store in the early 80's when PLANET first came out...they wanted 60 bucks for the tape! That was equal to a day's pay in those days so I passed.

I remember buying this even though I never bought a player.  A friend of mine had one and so I was able to see what it looked like.  The picture quality wasn't that great.  A needle actually read the audio and video information off the disc, and if there was the slightest grit in the groove, the picture skipped.

I do like this cover, although instead of Zaius that's James Daly as Honorius.  I like the use of the old Fox logo from the time, and I remember that this was the first video cover that paid special mention of Goldsmith's score on the back.

For some reason I never saved the thing.

Well, I bought it, though I don't know where I got the money from.  I also bought BENEATH too.

In 1985 when the entire series came out on VHS as those "Playhouse Video" releases, they were still nearly $60 a piece!

It wasn't until the VHS cassettes were repackaged in 1990 that the price dropped to $19.95 each.

I remember finally getting the Playhouse set when they went on sale a few years after they came out for about 20 bucks each. I still have them in a box somewhere.

It's true. They were around in '80--'81. I rented a player and some
discs from a local store once ("The Dead Zone" is the one movie I

You've never heard of a record with video? It's the home entertainment system that made the
Kessel run in less than 12 RPMs!

            I didn't even get a hand=me-down VCR until the mid 80's.
Or a CD player until the mid 90's.  I hope to have a DVD
recorder soon.  Until them I have to rip on my 5 year old
computer.  Here's to Cable with DVD, later today, I hope.

I remember the Playhouse VHS tapes of the movies, too.  I also remember just how pricey they were.  I think that my family got our first VCR in February 1986.  Back then, the price of a four-head machine was like $600.  Today, you can find a stereo four-head VHS recorder/player for $60 or so.  I got my first CD player a year later.  I purchased my first DVD recorder in July 2002.  It was like $635 at Circuit City.  Once again, today, you can find a VHS/DVD recorder for like $300.

I also purchased the first APES box set also in July 2002, along with the APES TV series at the same time.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the digital format; much more than tapes that can get wrapped around the heads of the VCR's.

It's true. They were around in '80--'81. I rented a player and some
discs from a local store once ("The Dead Zone" is the one movie I
              remember watching).

              I didn't even get a hand=me-down VCR until the mid 80's.
Or a CD player until the mid 90's.  I hope to have a DVD
recorder soon.  Until them I have to rip on my 5 year old
computer.  Here's to Cable with DVD, later today, I hope.

I have also heard that Kolp's first name was Arthur, it was shown in
                PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED.

The ANSANAUT website has given Taylor's crew these names, I guess at
                random:

                George Taylor
                Catherine Stewart
                Mathew Dodge
                Robert Landon

By the way, in the animated APES Colonel Brent's first name was Ronald.

Has anyone ever wondered what the names of a couple of the mutants were in BENEATH?

The Fat Man's real name was supposed to be "Adiposo" (whatever that means.)
And the Negro's name was supposed to be "Ono Goro".  I found the latter name out from the REVISITED book.

"Adiposo" is an Italian word. "TESSUTO ADIPOSO" mean "FAT TISSUE".

I am planning to do one prop of the ape sub-machinegun.

Somebody knows what armament is inside?

                    M3 grease gun?

                    .45acp or 9mm?

                    Thanks in advance

                    JR

Nope.  That a Danish sub-gun called a Madsen.
It's a 9 mm.  Good luck with the prop.

Perhaps her pc had crashed and burned...
Hope to hear from her soonly(?).

                    Does anyone know more?

Issue 104, now available on Hunter's site, brings us to the halfway point in the prequel to Battle, Quest for the Planet of the Apes. Disregard the blurb at the bottom of page 9. The Marvel UK editors failed to remove or change this from the US version, which contained the full story in a single issue, divided into two parts. This issue also contains another chapter in the reprinting of the Planet adaptation, as well as a letter column.
