was built. He also refers to the ads as some of the wonders of his
world so I don't think he was just relating what he read in a book.
The full script is on Hunter's site of you want to take a look.

.htmlOther than the 'Go Ape!' festival in theaters I don't remember CBS
doing anything more than they did for other new shows debuting that
year.
However, the series was originally scheduled for Tuesday nights. At the
last minute Fred Silverman switched it to Fridays. The show Good Times
had been in the Friday slot and had done well the previous year. So the
reasoning for switching the two shows is still a bit fuzzy. Now the
question is would the POTA done better on Tuesdays against Happy Days,
which was not yet a hit but was gaining in popularity. Good Times held
its own against Happy Days for a few years. Would POTA have done better
or worse?

President of CBS at the time. Paley and his wife were the champions of
the show. Roddy even mentions Mrs. Paley as such in the interview on
the Behind extras disc.

at the time resented having the show forced on him by the Paleys. He
is the person responsible for moving the show from Tuesday to Friday
where it was up against two of the hottest comedies of the time.

.htmlI don't know if you can say that Escape took about a week. We are never
told how long it was after Hasslien got Zira drunk he met with the
President. It could have been the next day or weeks later. We are also
never told how after that Hasslien presents his case to the commission
or how long the commission took to approve Hasslien's proposals. There
could have been weeks of meetings and debate on the issue. What we do
know is that when Hasslien got Zira drunk, she was not yet showing. But
when we next see here, being driven to the Army camp by Dr. Dixon, she
is showing. So it suggests that some considerable time has past. We
also don't know how long C&Z were held in the army camp. The
interrogation scene could have taken place on their first day there or
weeks later. It is really unclear over what period of time Escape takes
place.

Go to disc 2 of the Behind special edition. Roddy talks about Mrs.
Paley and how she was the champion of the show. The real villian was
Fred Silverman who resented having the show forced on him and then put
it on Fridays to kill it.

.htmlAha!! The plot thickens! You're right about my crappy memory, it was,
I think, Silverman who hated Apes.If HE made the decision to alter
the scheduling, it clearly wasn't for reasons friendly to Apes.I just
can't see why the series gets criticised so much--growing up, as a
loyal little monkey, it was years before I saw the shows again. When I
did, I was amazed at just how good they are. It was clearly a party
line message to say 'crap show, crap ratings'and cancel it.The
ratings were marginal for a cancellation--it was not a foregone
conclusion that the show had to end and it's suiggested that the
producers made a couple more shows even after getting word of the
cancellation, suggesting the studio couldn't wait to kill the
show. There seem to have been forces involved who didn't want the Apes
show, and succeeded in killing it.Damn them, damn them ....oh you
know the rest! John.

are for Burton's Apes--maybe it IS that dark, but chunks of it look
wrong. If they're doing this, we may have the hope for a full release
of the original movies---restored footage, commentaries etc.? I was
looking at Eric's book this week and the image of the cut opening scene
from Conquest with the shot gorilla is chilling, but was clearly filmed
and must exist somewhere.I still hope for more Apes stuff, and if Apes
2001 is the start, I'll buy it. John, Scrolls.

Near Classic means cover my ass in case some mediocre
remake sullies the rep of a one time Sci-Fi Classic and
makes it look more like one of it's lesser sequels.

Did the series "fruit" good ratings anyway, or was it an absolute
fiasco? After all, in UK it was an istant hit, and even in the
States it managed to earn a "cult status" of some sort (retained
still today).
So was it a moderate success in U.S.A, promotional push or not?

There is no mediocre remake. Only a gallant attempt to recreate a
classic. Unfortunately, we took it the wrong way and ended up hating
it because our beauties were not in it...
There's that word again: CHANGE...
Love it or leave it, it's here and it really is the 21st
Century...
Our apes are devolving and evolving...
How many remakes lie out there because of what they
are: "remakes?"
Perhaps if we give them a chance there will be a genuine remake...
But why?
Why attempt to recreate something that is already done?
Thus enters Tim Burton = difference...

It was a compelling "remake" of the ORIGINAL BOOK.

Planet of the apes, I have the collector's edition dvd set, the

1998, I watched the 'Behind' documentary with my dad, he told me that
he was a big fan when he was a kid. Back then I was obsessed in cars
(still am!), and seeing as I was interessed with the makeup and the
story, I lokked out for any sins of cars, I could not see any, but
when James Franciscus & Linda Harrison go down into the buried city of
New York, they pass a red white & blue bus buried in rock. I loved it,
so far I have been watching every apes picture I could to find the one
bus, but now I own the box set, and the bus is a matte painting. Not a
real bus. Say, does anyone have a picture of it?. <.html

as told in his two follow up novels. The first, in particular, is
excellent. The junior novels also really flesh out the
characters.Burton's Apes movie was rushed and, in some respects, too
ambitious---you get the feeling that, with more time, things might
have been better--although that's not always the case in
Hollywood. It's interesting that the emphasis in terms of
merchandising now is classic Apes--the Ultimate head set has Caesar,
not Thade, as its theme.Maybe the studio bigwigs are starting to
think about things? John, Scrolls.

No they're not, whether you like it or not.
If POTA2K1 had been better they might be.
But since it wasn't . . . They're not. I defended
it when it was out as being not THAT bad, in order
to boost the boxoffice. I even paid to see it 14 times.
But even though it made a decent profit, it wasn't enough
to secure a sequel, unless you're privy to info we're not aware of.

| Subject: ESCAPE/CONQUEST questions... for my Apeline Two |
|
.html Humanoid Apes,
Some questions for you... I'm going CRAZY! Maybe you can help me...
LOL!
1- "Eight years ago, a plague killed..." - Was Armando
just "rounding up" the EXACT date? Because I'm more and more
convinced that CONQUEST is not *ONLY* set in 1991, but 1992 and '93
too! Basically the whole movie might be covering a span of 3 years.
Keep in mind Armando often refers to Caesar as being "20 years old",
despite he was born in 1973 A.C. Keep in mind that Breck and his
crew, when relating to Armando and his activity, often refer to this
specific amount of time: "20 years", and not "18"!
So, a possible scenario:
1991 - Just the PROLOGUE of CONQUEST.
1992 - First part of the movie (from the helicopter scene). Caesar
is, of course, 19, almost 20. Armando is just "rounding up" (1983-
1992=9, not 8). Presumibly, Armando raised his circus in 1972 (1972-
1992= 20). Caesar is introduced in the Ape Training Center, and
lately purchased by Breck.
1993- Caesar's revolution, after aprox. one year of captivity.
2- According to my scenario, in BENEATH Zira was in her *SECOND*
month of pregnancy (she's not showing yet).
Then, the Ape-O-Nauts crash-landed on Earth in FEBRUARY/MARCH 1973
A.C.
The second ship ("missing for OVER two years") the President was
referring to was indeed the mission which will "merge" in 3073 A.C.,
12 years before Virdon and Burke's arrival on POTA I (the astronauts
killed by Urko and lately mentioned by Zaius).
Brent's rescue mission is a secret, and not yet declared "failed"
(What's about the TV reporting, anyway? "Two ships disintegrated in
orbit", is this the exact quote from the movie?)
MILO II was born in SEPTEMBER (Chimps pregnancy = 8 months). ARMANDO
headed towards his Winter quarters in October/November.
What do you think about it? I need suggestions and quotes from the
movies.
Many thanks...
T.C. <.html

.html It has come to my attention that there are those who continually
question POTA movies chronology.
Let me state that the POTA films were not suppose to be sequels as
such, but because of the success of `Planet' other sequels followed
which were not planned, and thus were not thought out properly.
So what we have is an inconsistency of chronology.
I have tried my very best to marry these inconsistencies to make
sense of it all, in my researches and information given by other
people to help me with my Timeline.
But there are those who still question dates and periods, this is
fine to a point, but the truth is no one will be satisfied.
There are ways to have POTA Timelines, which can be divided as
follows:
1. POTA Movie Timeline.
2. POTA TV-Series Timeline.
3. Alternative POTA Movie/TV Series Timeline.
4. Composite POTA Timeline.
From the above, my Timeline is a `composite' and thus probably the
hardest to do.
But let's look at the contradictions and inconsistencies of the
movies, which by the way were made by 20th Century Fox.
1. In `Planet' the year is 3978, but in `Beneath' it is 3955. In
reality the correct date should be 3978.
2. In `Escape' the year is 1973, when it really was suppose to be
1975. The reason for this date is simple; the President says that two
ships went missing over two years ago. If the launch date for
Taylor's ship was 14/1/72, add let's say 26 months that will bring us
to 1975. Unless we put back Taylor's ship launch back to 1970 to fit
the 'Escape' timeline.
3. In `Conquest' the year is 1991, when it should be 1993 (not
withstanding the above correction). The reason for this date is
simple; Armando and the Newscaster both mention 20 years ago that
Cornelius and Zira came to Earth. But if you add 20 to 1975, you get
1995 (Another inconsistency, which would make the Plague happen in
the year 1987, instead of 1983).
All in all I am happy with my interpretation of my Timeline, if there
are those who dispute it, then let them make their own Timeline
instead of pestering me about my efforts. I have taken a long time to
gather the information and put it together as best as I can to fit
the POTA universe, to make sense of it all.
But you must remember 20th Century Fox made the errors when making
the POTA films and I have tried to accommodate those errors to best
fit the information given to make my Timeline.
Regards.
Peter. <.html

DEHN flubbed, but it's up to us to "make sense" out of it, at this
point. It's a painful process. Anyway, it seems to me that the MOST
of the "errors" are heavily concentrated in ESCAPE and CONQUEST.

I did the same with my mammoth, double-crossed timelines, compiling
a whole database full of informations and reasoning. I'm still in
the process of revisioning, however. It's not easy at all, everyday
a new "problem" to fix (read: unflub) pops-up.
> From the above, my Timeline is a `composite' and thus probably the

I think the Alternative one is the longest and the hardest to
compile. APELINE ONE (the Original one) is surely the most complex.

I forgot about the NEWSCASTER! I'm preaching that CONQUEST is set in
1991 *AND* 1992 since I can remember!

Time-sensitivity works in mysterious ways and it is up to us to
fill in the blanks, my friend...
Unfortuneatly, I don't include the "tv series" in this. That is
way off the driven course of events...
Time travel depends on when and where one lands. Brent launched
at an inopportune time and missed saving the Earth by only milli-
seconds...
He arrived too late, thus dieing alongside his comrade, Taylor...
He should have set his coordinates to land him before all hell
broke loose...
But who knew?
If we stretch our imaginations, maybe Taylor's distress signal
had reached present Earth before the ship sank. Then that would mean
that NASA is a bunch of dummies for not doing their math... <.html

.html Good question. St.Peter was crucified upside down, at his own request,
because he felt himself unworthy to mirror Jesus Christ. It's also, in
the context of Beneath, got 'world turned upside down' connotations,
with Apes supplanting Man.Does the 'sign of the Bomb' actually appear
in Beneath? It's in the scripts and the novels, I think, but I'm not
sure if it's in the movie.I'm sure studio bosses would have been
squeamish about clear parallels with Christain rites, and so 'upside
down crucifiction' might have been preferred to avoid direct comparison-
--but then even the early sketches for Beneath, as shown on the Behind
disc, always had them upside down.I'm inclined to think that being
crucified upside down is just an evil twist by the Mutants going for
maximum horror--if you get crucified upside down death is caused by
your brain bursting with blood.John. <.html

In the "series", the humans talk(oh, that's where pota 2001 got
the idea), and that just isn't right. Also, the humans had too many
rights; ie, their own farms, fields, and a touch of freedom. Plus
they were aloud to reproduce.
Now you know that a REAL ape colonization would never allow any
of those atrocities...
Plus (now it gets touchy), that series was not all that and a bag
of chips... All they did was run away and maybe once-in-a-while get
caught or sick or hurt...
I'm sorry, but I was not impressed by the TV series even when I
watched it in its heyday. But, just for posterities sake, I purchased
the DVD...
Seriously sit down and really pay attention to it once. It
sucked...
