Totally stupid and moronic. Seeing clips of him in previews before
the movie opened convinced me that it was going to be a disaster. I
didn't see it until a year or so later when it was shown on TV and my

As far as "alive" actors featuring THAT specific make-up are
concerned, the product is *CANON* belonging to the classic cinematic
POTA SAGA!

(Except for the end of 'SPACEBALLS', the promotionals and the
scarceful behind-the-scenes excerpts in BEHIND).

By the way, has anyone here heard the band They Might Be Giants' version of "Beneath The Planet Of The Apes"?  I did, a long time ago, a lady friend at work had it on a cassette.  It was just plain weird.

      The ending MAKES sense, indeed.

After millenia since Davidson's "departure", and thanks to the
earthling "historical transmissions" carefully stored inside the
OBERON database (see the beginning of the movie), the ARMY OF THADE
(named in memory of the great general of the ancient past of POTA)
built thousands of GAMMA PODS and travelled across the Fractal. They
arrived on EARTH in 1800 A.C. and altered human history forever.
      Davidson merged in 2155 A.C.
Does it sound familiar? APELINE ONE and TWO all rolled into one single
      movie. Kudos to BURTON.

      Quite frankly,

I'm embrarassed by the whole topic. 'STAR TREK' is funny, and 'STAR
WARS' is eye-candy, but both can't be associated to POTA in any
form. POTA is a poetic epic saga, serious stuff.

I'm also embarassed by the STAR TREK homoerotic undertones and the
poorly-written screenplays of the 6 Star Wars movies in almost equal
      measures :) LOL!

ESCAPE, the worst POTA movie (still a brilliant movie) is far better
than the BEST movie out of one of the two sagas.

      Take care,

      Subject: MacDonald in BATTLE
      .html
      Humanoid Apes,

This is truly the only problem I encountered to properly "fix" my
APELINE TWO: MacDonald II (younger brother), my favourite character,
second only to Caesar and Armando.
I sucessfully escaped from the issues relating the interconnection
between ESCAPE and CONQUEST - no pun intended - thanks to a combined
      effort of minds.
Now I find myself in trouble with this!

If MacDonald (the younger brother) was an employed WATCHER of the
Ape Management Archive of Century City (1991/92 A.C.) by his
admission, and he was at least 20 years old at that time... what's
about his age in BATTLE, 27/30 years later? In 1973, when BATTLE was
filmed, AUSTIN STOKER was barely 30, and he looked like 30, not 50.

Anyway, I found Mac a brilliant character, and STOKER's portrait was
truly marvellous. No way, Mac II is one of my favourite characters
in the CAESAR trilogy, after CAESAR himself.

      MACDONALD RULES!!!

      Any solution?

I didn't say that I thought the end didn't make sense, I said the
media and I assume the general public were giving that impression,
enough so that fox would go to the lengths of printing a flyer trying
      to explain it.

As far as kudos to Burton.... that's another story....

It came with a time-line. It was a sequence of zig-zag time
tunneling that you had to follow. But I couldn't figure it out, really.
It didn't pertain to the movie because that had been screwed with way
      too much...

If you can bear to listen to Burton's insomnia-curing commentary
("It's like... this thing, y'know... this thing... like... when you
get.. this thing... it's like... the thing... y'know?") It's quite
obvious he neither knows, nor cares, what the ending was all about.

I seem to recall (And I should really go and check that he actually
said this) that he was once quoted as saying something like "The movie
shouldn't be over-examined, it's just a story about talking monkeys"
Which I think summed up the contemptuous philosophy behind the 2001
      version perfectly.

      Ape Fellows,

I strongly defend Tim Burton and its work because:

1- I would not have accepted a carbon-copy of POTA 1968. Today, when
they remake classic movies, they re-do them THE SAME - sequence by
sequence. In my mind (as well as yours, I'm sure), POTA 1968 is a
      cosmic masterpiece, untouchable.
Burton did a TOTALLY different POTA movie, a popcorn POTA movie...
but at least, a different POTA movie !!!

2- Everything in the production is top-notch, despite the screenplay
could have been BETTER. The "talking monkeys" are beautiful... not
effective and cool like the original make-up Apes, but very good.

3- Many "recalls" to the original book... from a certain
perspective, "this" POTA movie is CLOSER to Boulle's book than POTA
      1968. Strange, isn't it?

4- I love the use of the time-travelling concept they did in the
movie, and all the "images" connected to it.

5- The ending amazed me, definitely.

The only thing which ruined the movie was the HUMOUR but... wait a
moment, again, it contributed to make "this" POTA movie a DIFFERENT
      POTA movie.

We didn't need a POTA remake movie in 2001, we don't need it now.
But a "reimagining" movie (as Burton put it) is well accepted by Mr.
      Apecalypse Now.

By what criteria is Escape deemed to be the worst Ape movie? You can
make a good case for it being the best--superb and inventive script
that totally revived and regenerated the series, wonderful score, an
enduring blend of love story, comedy and drama, wonderful
performances from all of the leads, including memorable performances
by Eric Braeden and Ricardo Montalban. The opening credits are the
best of the series.I'd be hard pressed to class Escape as the worst!

I am always amazed that Hollywood rarely has any original ideas anymore.

Burton's POTA was not a particularly horrible film, but sadly a forgettable film -- and in no way can be put on the same level as the original. POTA2001 will always be remembered as a bad remake.

Maybe its me, but I also didn't like Jackson's Kong either. Another bad remake that will be forgotten and remade again in 15 years.

Jackson and Burton are brilliant directors -- when they do original work -- however when they remake classic films (like POTA, WILLIE WONKA, and KONG) they are just reworking someone else's imagination and the result is always bland.

Everything you say is, of course, TRUE. But the other POTA movies are
EVEN superior to it, despite all the qualities you mentioned, Johnny.

God, I love this saga, this is the greatest thing which ever happened

With Richard Donner's cut of Superman 2 coming out, maybe the trend
will be to restore other movies.Even Lucas relented on bits of Star
Wars, so maybe the door isn't totally closed to seeing the full Planet,
with the additional chase footage and pregnancy scene, and also the
full Conquest, with the beginning and ending restored.Incidentally,
Donner is now co-scripting Superman in Action Comics.John, Scrolls.

Hey all, just wanted to say to our Revolution on the Planet of the
Apes mastermind, excellent work on your recent (albeit non-Apes) work.
Your Howard the Duck short in the recent Civil War: Chosing Sides one
shot was hilarious! Any chance of an ongoing series? (Please?) And
then, I go to pick up the new American Splendor, and there you are
again! So now, all of my various geek things are crashing into one
another, Harvey Pekar and Planet of the Apes (you're not doing
anything with The Prisoner, are you?)
So, just wanted to say, Good Job!

God, I found the whole MARVEL TIMELINE so funny and ridiculous! Bad
writing, no reasoning, any clue behind it.

That's what says about the CARTOON:

      3479

      February:
Astronauts Bill Allen, Jeff Hudson and Judy Franklin crash-land in a
lagoon southwest of New York. While traversing the desert, Franklin
disappears into a chasm that mysteriously closes in on itself. Allen
and Hudson continue on to find a forested glade inhabited by savage
humans. In a raid by gorilla soldiers, Allen is captured along with
several of the primitive humans. Shortly thereafter, he escapes and
along with Hudson, returns to the Forbidden Zone. There, they
discover the now buried ruins of New York City. After finding
Franklin, they escape the mutants of the city. It is unknown as to
what eventually became of the astronauts. (Animated Planet of the
      Apes)

      ???? 3949 A.C. ? I know it was 3979 A.C. And what's about the
technology? What's about Cornelius, Zira, Zaius and all the
      recurring characters... ???

      Thanks for the kind words.

If you, or anyone wants an ongoing HTD series, (and believe me, no one wants that more than I) you have to write to Marvel and demand it.  Email the editor (Tom Brevoort) at Marvel.com, or go to the message boards at ComicBookResources.com and post something to the "ask Brevoort" message boards at the comic book community at that site.  If anyone's having trouble finding those sites, let me know and I'll paste in some hyperlinks.

Those are the two best ways to communicate with Tom, he looks at both sites DAILY, and it's entirely a matter of fan response that gets those decisions made.

      HI TC,

This just goes to prove that 20th Century Fox had no idea how to
develop the story lines for the POTA Movie Series.

Since they made the films one at a time and not properly thought out
      as it should have been.

Perhaps MacDonald is lets say about between 50-60 years of age. It's
not impossible to have a young 50 year old man. As todays standard
proves. Or maybe the radiation/fallout may have mutated his genes
      and slowed his ageing process.

      Regards.

      Peter.

      Pete,

HotScheetz found a great, brilliant solution, you can read it on my
      APELINE TWO table.

Anyway, you're partially right about 20th Century. AT LEAST, all the
inconsistencies created this beautiful "Alternative Timeline"
      concept... KUDOS TO IT!

      Hi Humanoid Apes,

Last night I went with my girlfriend to see 'CLICK', starring Sandler
and Walken (there's a nice reference to POTA, by the way).

In the multi-theatre, there's an entire "room" whose walls are
enterely covered with movie stills taken straight from KUBRICK's films.

I spotted some panels depicting his "Austrolopithecus Afarensis" from
      the horrid movie '2001'.
Strangely enough, in my memories the make-up was BETTER. In some
shots, it just looks plain BAD, no way.

      What do you think about?

POTA make-up is outstanding, and POTA movie was excellent... 2001 was
HORRIBLE. Bad direction, boring and useless screenplay, bad shots,
      uninteresting dialogues...

POTA 1968 makeup is intended for one thing, Odissey 2001 makeup is for another.
      Both are groundbreaking.

hello i'm john, new to the group. this has probably been said many
times. but being new here i need to vent, and chat with fellow fans. I
hope someday in the near future they will make a fabulous remake or a
new ape movie. Or maybe it just needs to be left alone. i am 47, and
seeing planet of the apes at the age of 8 affected me like nothing
else still to this day. i am constantly trying to write my own movie,
and don't seem to come up with anything to honor the original, and
that is the only way i would want it. i thought the burton version was
pitiful. all they kept talking about in the reviews was the fabulous
makeup. big friggin deal. your story was lame. anyway it would be nice
to chat with others and get your thoughts. thanks

What's interesting is the first couple of seasons of Fox shows (Mary
Tyler Moore, MASH) don't have the play all option, but subsequent
seasons do. In fact, I'm debating whether to purchase the ultimate MASH
collection that comes out tomorrow, in hopes that season 1-4 have the
play all option in this set. Yes, I've purchased season 1-10 and the
film already, but unlike the ultimate ape collection, there are two
discs unavailable in the season sets. That really grinds my gears....

Okay, I feel a need to comment on this. Yes, I agree, Tim Burton's
POTA was pretty awful (I'm straining to not use explatives to
explain just how awful), but, I think his other movies are pretty
good, the really good ones being Ed Wood and Sleepy Hollow. I
actually went to see the Burton POTA because it was Burton, and
because the make-up effects were cool. Granted, I left the theater
with an urge to kill someone, but, hey, that happens sometimes.
I'm just gonna ride the fence on the Burton-bashing and say that
sometimes it's warranted, but sometimes, not so much.

Subject: The Hasslein Curve Big Thread
        .html
01-14-1972: 'Big One' mission commanded by Colonel Taylor lifts off
from Cape Kennedy. The crew: Landon, Dodge and Lt. Stewart.
Overspread by a sudden and powerful electro-magnetical impulse
generated by the hyperdrive system, the ship disappears from orbital
detection, and it's supposed to have disintegrate after some type of
malfunctioning. Actually, the journey goes on, and the crew is alive
and well despite the unpredictable problems. The electromagnetical
releases, during the whole length of the journey, will be
responsible for the further stimulation of an 'Hasslein Curve' which
        interconnects Point A (1972 A.C.) with Point B (3979 A.C.).

NOTE: Taylor in his final report: "Six months indeep space... by OUR
time, that is. According to Doctor Hasslein's Theory of Time in a
vehicle travelling nearly the speed of light, the Earth has aged
nearly seven hundred years since we left it, while we've aged hardly
at all. Hmm. Maybe so." It's just a theory from the astronaut's
perspective, and lately in the movie the younger Landon will express
his scepticism about it. Besides, as Brent pointed out, the Hasslein
Curve should be seen as a "time bending" zone to not confuse with
the spontaneous dilatation in time experienced by Taylor & Co. and
        originated by nearlight hyperdrive system (manifactured by aliens;
        re-arranged by ANSA engineers).

        -------------------------------------------------------> BRENT

1972. Early February. Secretly, a preventive rescue mission to find
and repair Big One is launched with Astronaut Brent and 'Skipper'
Maddox on a brand-new ship, powered by an experimental engine able
to reach "warp velocities". In the desperate effort to track
Taylor's trajectory, they end in a strange distortion outside the
boundaries of Earth's portion of space: the Hasslein Curve,
partially caused by the Big One itself.

NOTE:The Hasslein Curve is a sort of wormhole, a "bend in time".
There are several tidbits to suggest that the Hasslein's Theory of
Time and the Hasslein Curve are two different concepts. Brent's
mission obviously represented a rushed attempt of rescue, and the
ship wasn't equipped with hybernation chambers. Besides, the state
of the ship at the end of the "crossing" was terrible, and Brent
barely survived. It wasn't a regular space journey, and Brent's
        account to Skipper was ambiguous.

        ------------------------------------------------------> DIFFERENCE

        HASSLEIN's THEORY OF TIME

When travelling at nearlight speed, a discrepancy is created
between "external" and "subjective" time. Since such discrepancy is
based on constant factors, the 'Dilatation Effect' becomes an ideal
bridge between two specific chronological points in the continuum.
Under such conditions, the "external" time speeds-up while
the "subjective" time obviously slows down, like two parallel panels
which slide in two different directions each other.

        HASSLEIN CURVE

The Hasslein Curve is technically a "spot" of energetical distortion
involving a well-localized portion of space; a sort of "physical
debasement". Its structure acts like a wormhole interconnecting two
specific points in the space-time continuum. Such "chrono-
coordinates" (Enter and Exit mouthes) were set by pivotal
electromagnetical releases of the spacecraft vessel known as 'Big
One'. The Exit mouth materialized after some months the last release
        (November 3978 A.C.), thus in August 3979 A.C.

        ----------------------------------------------------->

QUESTION FOR YOU ALL: IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE 'HASSLEIN CURVE'
WASN'T ORIGINATED OR EVEN STIMULATED BY THE BIG ONE SHIP? MAYBE IT
WAS A PRE-EXISTENT SPOT IN SPACE, ALREADY "SET IN PLACE", WITH PRE-
EXISTENT CHRONO-COORDINATES (1972/3979)... BRENT AND SKIPPER
MISFIRE, DIDN'T "GUESS" TAYLOR'S EXACT TRAJECTORY AND THUS
ENCOUNTERED THE HASSLEIN CURVE (WORMHOLE). MAYBE, IT WAS JUST A PURE
COINCIDENCE THAT THEY ENDED IN 3979 A.C., ONE YEAR AFTER TAYLOR (WHO
DOESN'T ENCOUNTERED THE ANOMALY BUT WAS VICTIM OF THE TIME
        DILATATION)!

Subject: Arthur P. Jacobs - The "George Lucas" of the POTA SAGA?
        .html
        Humanoid Apes,

I strongly believe this. Not only he produced the movies, but nurtured
them and had almost TOTAL creative control, despite the excellent
directors called to film original and sequels.

I think he was somewhat of a "visionary", because he re-imagined
(sounds familiar?) BOULLE's universe from a scratch. So, if BOULLE is
the Grandfather of the Apes and the creator, JACOBS is the father and
the responsible of the POTA MYTHOLOGY and the absolute "re-inventor".
Surely, POTA 2001 is closer to the original novel, and that's quite
fine in my book. JACOBS created a totally new entity, if you think
        about it for a moment.

        I don't care about the spin-off cartoon being a "stand-alone", my
biggest problem is the lack of JACOBS behind the TV series, because
that impoverishes it of any "artistic" credibility in the critics
perspective. Do you know if there was any Jacobs's involvement, at
least on a seminal stadium, in the production of the series? Too bad,
because I found the series excellent!
I hate the idea to consider the series as a spin-off and *NOT* part of
the saga. Jacobs's involvement would have been the last word.

Have you any trivia or fact to tell me about JACOBS?

I don't let Burton off that lightly.Lucas was short on budget and
time, but created a legend with Star Wars. For that matter, Spielberg
managed something similar on Jaws. Ted Post had horrendous cuts in
budget and script on Beneath and still did a fine job.Burton's vision
was horribly mis-judged and poorly executed--if he didn't want his
name on it, walk away.A good script should have been the priority,
not lame jokes and garish armour, poor make-up and scenes so cloudy

So, John, let me get this straight -- you didn't like it?...=)

        Poor makeup, huh?
Could you recognize any of them except Charleton Heston if their
names had not been emblazoned across the credits? Did you have to wait
till the end to find out who was who?
Budgets today can run into the tens of millions for but one major
motion picture. And I must agree, Burton was weak to allow the big-wigs
to push him toward the Hasty Pudding awards...
Maybe he couldn't walk away. Maybe he was tied by contract to finish
this project: hands tied... He was very adjetated if you ever watched
the extras. You could tell he was unhappy and just wanted to get it
done. That's why he vowed never to do another...
The magic is gone. If there is ever to be another remake it will be
up to an independent film company and they will play hell getting the
        rights...
After all, our beloved apes lie in the hands of a new generation who
could give a shit if it's done right just as long as they get a piece
of the pie in the end. They will NEVER let go....

        Sincerely,
        Thade's Darling Human

Well, Burton is the director with a reputation for radical, aureur
type movies, and yet he's pure studio, never having, himself, made an
independant movie. The make-up was a disgrace in his Apes, lacking in
movement and expression.Stan Winston's tests were massively better
and you CAN lay that at Burton's door, because he got Baker in.Kim
Hunter's Zira had more emotion and sympathy in one excited stare than
Burton's entire troop.I don't hate the film, but, looking back, I
recall the sinking feeling when I first saw all of that red
armour. The spaceship set was truly spectacular, pre and post crash,
but the hunt and the city are just cringe making in parts--the disco
Apes, false teeth etc, just dreadful garbage. Tim aint no Frank, Rick
aint no John, Danny aint no Jerry and Mark aint no actor. The main
feeling now is to glory in just how wonderful the original is, and
mourn the death of truly innovative, talented film making. And the
crime of wasting the talents of Tim Roth! John, Scrolls.

the "apes were in '68. But ole Georgie boy had money. He didn't have
to pay for rights because it was his and his alone. Pierre Boulle was
the sole owner of the "Apes" and had to be bought and paid for for as
many times as the story was told.
It's easy to budget when you know what you want and don't have
anyone to answer to except yourself. Hell, isn't that what we writers
strive for? A story to call our own?
