I remember the scene of the POTA68 judgment.... shanter2002 <john@...> wrote: Well, Burton is the director with a reputation for radical, aureur type movies, and yet he's pure studio, never having, himself, made an independant movie. The make-up was a disgrace
in his Apes, lacking in movement and expression.Stan Winston's tests were massively better and you CAN lay that at Burton's door, because he got Baker in.Kim Hunter's Zira had more emotion and sympathy in one excited stare than Burton's entire troop.I don't hate the film, but, looking back, I recall the sinking feeling when I first saw all of that red armour. The spaceship set was truly spectacular, pre and post crash, but the hunt and the city are just cringe making in parts--the disco Apes, false teeth etc, just dreadful garbage. Tim aint no Frank, Rick aint no John, Danny aint no Jerry and Mark aint no actor. The main feeling now is to glory in just how wonderful the original is, and mourn the death of truly innovative, talented film making. And the crime of wasting the talents of Tim Roth! .htmlArthur Jacobs owned the rights to Monkey Planet years before he made
the movie. It probably didn't cost a bundle, either, because even Boulle
didn't think it could be filmed.Burton's movie had a big, big budget,
one example of more being less.A film with half the Apes, twice the
script and, I would suggest, a better feel for the franchise, may
already have had two sequels, a la X-men.Another way of looking at
Burton's effort is to consider the lack of a legacy--what new Burton
Apes product is there, or will there ever be? It was a badly mis-judged
effort all round.John, Scrolls.

.html Don't you love it when you write that "one" story so different -
only to find it opening in theaters a year after you slaved over it?
Damn them!
Damn them all to Hell!
Just wait...
I have more tricks up my sleeve...
But it really hits a chord in one's soul...
I don't know how many can relate, but I thought I'd just throw
this out here to see.
Forgive my off-centeredness...
I'm just a bit perturbed at the moment...
I feel as if I've been violated even though there is no way they
could have gotten to my files and shorts...
Even though I am looked at apathectically, I feel I can turn to
you all for some comfort for how I am feeling.
I am not like you and don't plan on changing. I love our apes as
much as you do but I don't delve as deeply as you, but does that make
me an ape hater?
I look at myself as an eclectic aper.
I love them all. Good, bad, and ugly...
And you all already know who my all-time favorite is : Thade.
But I'm not bad. I'm just portrayed that way.
Appreciate this space and your time reading it,
Thade's Darling HUman. <.html

.htmlHello, Leo.
As far as I know, most of the people who frequent this board are
adults, but I believe quite a few of them first saw Apes when they
were kids. My first exposure to Apes was when I was 9. I overheard
some older kids at school talking about this cool movie they had seen
on TV where Apes rode horses and a guy had a big scar on his head
where they had cut out his brain. I admit it was more the brain scar
than the apes on horses that made me want to see the movie. I stated
checking the TV listings after that to see if would be on TV again.
That was just before the TV series started in 1974.
It would be a while before I saw the original film. I saw the TV
series and Battle before I got to see the original film (and see that
scar). Back in those days before VCRs I had to convince my parents to
let me stay up late a few times to catch the films when they aired on
TV. I saw them all out of order, with Escape being the final one.
So Leo, how did you first hear of Planet of the Apes, and which film
did you see first?

Don't feel that way, sir knight! Rise forth and conquer!
You're a welcomed wanderer and you will always find a place to
nestle among the "Apes"...
Older does not mean wiser in some cases, squire. There are
no "Mr's. or Mrs." as long as you are true. There are sages and fools,
misfits (like me), and pieces that will never fit in the puzzle, but
never feel small, young master.
Harsh words have crashed upon my words...made me feel so
inferior... but I rose and found that I was not the only one that
cared about things which others did not and it qualmed all of our
furies...
All right...
I'm a poet at times(to all out there who catch this email :) ),
but we all hold this passion for our beloved apes and nothing will
ever break it...
Welcome, young newcomer, and pay attention, for these writers
will tell you how to become a real "Planet of the Apes" fan...
Sincerely,
Thade's Darling Human <.html

They are recreating a whole new aspect on the scheme whether you

I'm open to it as long as they leave my lovely Zira, Cornelius,

You've got to admit; there was no hint of them in the 2001 and I

I thought 'Return to OZ' (The Disney live-action sequel) was pretty
good. It could never have hoped to match the popularity of the
original but - unlike Burton's Apes, it didn't make me feel embarrased.
Cronenberg's 'The Fly' was, IMHO a brilliant example of how to
succesfully 're-imagine' a movie.
It can be done!

No, they tried to recreate what THEY love most - a cash cow with some
longevity.
To do that they needed to go back and study the original and try to
understand what made it work. Good writers, good directors, good
actors - in short, people in front of, and behind the camera who are
each at the top of thier game.
If they are going to do that and then brush thier hands of it, fine.
Just don't go calling it 'Planet of the Apes' is all. Call it
something like 'Talking monkeys' instead.

.htmlCape Fear was another admirable re-make, that some think better than
the original. The various Gunfight at the OK Corral movies have all
had merit---the key is to truly understand and respect the source
material and to bring something else to the party to ENHANCE the
experience and create a film that can stand on it's own merits, not
be melted by the glow of a classic original.Otherwise, there's no
point, other than to grab a buck, the irony being that if you make a
good movie, you'll probably make lots more bucks anyway.John, Scrolls.

No doubt it can be done, but don't destroy a film because some
did not like it. They really didn't have to be so hasty. For Christ
sake it took ten years to bring 2001 to the screen. Unfortunately
they forgot to write a good script to go along with it. :\
Now let's imagine our "new" cast with a new script - a better
one. Would you have liked it then? <.html

New cast,or new characters?
I had problems with both.
Mark Wahlberg was a Major(pun intended) piece of mis-casting.
I don't even remember some of the character names. No interest.
Particularly the humans. Who was the boy, and what was the use of him.
(rhetorical)
Daena was a bit of fluff, but no patch on Nova as a character.
Not to mention the Human crew on the Station (shite I've even
forgotten it's name)
Some other slave human who escaped with them. All scarred and South
Central LA looking. What was his role?
And on and on.
Attar was a good character well cast. Michael Clarke Duncan has
presence and made an under utilised character memorable.
Tim Roth is a great actor, but even he suffered playing a real chimp.
Part of the charm of Cornelius & Zira was the fact that they were not
real chimps but evolved Chimps more human (insult)in characteristics.
Thade was more like the Mirror Universe, Cheetah.
So would I like to see another Ape film with the same cast and
characters?
No.
But I would love to see another Ape film.
It is a real pity that Peter Jackson didn't decide to do Apes.He
considered it, but Lord Of The Rings was more attractive to him.

.html I agree with the lack of true talent as compared to 1968.I wouldn't
use Oscar as a benchmark of the talent though.
The work of those people speaks volumes.
It started a phenomenom.
Apes 2001 did not have to be a misfire.
Updates, remakes,re-imagines or whatever you call them, can be well
crafted.
Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, The Fly and even Bond show that
the new kids in town (alright Cronenberg is an oldie)can update
their nostalgia with talent and reverence.
Apes 2001 made the mistake of not reverring the source or the people
who were waiting for it.The audience.
Instead the Corporation just put out something shiny hoping that the
masses would not look for substance.
I honestly think that Hollywood has less and less talented resources
available to it because it focused too much on money.
There is talent out there, around the world but Fox will never allow
creative control to be given to one or two truly talented people.

P.J. was already discussed and thrown on the canvas. I can agree
with you that the humans were lame. They should have kept their
mouths shut. And Wahlberg was the last one I would have cast in that
part considering it needed to be strong... He was a wuss...
M.C.D. was a phenomanol gorilla and Tim Roth was a grizzly human
hater, but that was how he was supposed to be. I must disagree... the
characters stay(I love Thade ;> ) . Maybe a bit more apathy should be
involved?

Okay, I've been corrected. So, if it takes ten years
to "greenlight" a project why then weren't they working on a script
for it? This isn't a meant as a stab to your intelligence, my fine
friend, just a query to who can answer it. Because in the beginning
they probably had one until too many started screwing with it...
I'd like to see THEE original script or outline. The scratch.
Usually those are the best before they start stickin' crap in
between the lines...
Like I always said: Let the true ape fans make the changes. Don't
make them for us. We probably won't like them... <.html

Wallace Swett, founder and president of the sanctuary, helped me in my search. I have been referred to them on literally several occasions as a responsible agency that could help me with my search for the chimp actor. They are now victim to legal proceedings, and have been for months, at the hand of the PETA organization. An internet search would lead one to believe that Primarily Primates is abusing their animals terribly, but conversation with Ms. Feral reveals that photos and videos
were staged by a volunteer and other documentation was forged. It is my understanding that Wallace Swett stepped down as president in August of this year. And Stephen Tello became president in October. PETA has bad blood with Stephen Tello. It is my understanding that PETA had him legally removed; using this staged evidence, and is now acting as a pseudo guardian for the animals. A bookkeeper and three caregivers are actually the only staff of Primarily Primates that remain intact. The clincher is that PETA has already disbursed
some of the animals and intends to send the remaining animals to Chimp Haven if given legal control of the sanctuary. Although it is not generally known, Chimp Havens animals are owned by the NIH (National Institute of Health) and are basically warehoused there and can be called into duty as research animals at any time. Animals at Primarily Primates are owned by the sanctuary and live their lives at the sanctuary and end their lives, naturally, at the sanctuary. The reason I am writing this is because someone here will certainly care about what happens to this sanctuary. It is home to several retired
actors. One of these is already on track to be euthanized. The Friends of Animals agency is helping fund their legal expenses. I would suggest that it would be helpful to send funds to them, earmarked for Primarily Primates legal defense. Sending money directly to Primarily Primates would put those funds directly into the hands of PETA. Priscilla Feral, president of Friends of Animals, said that she would be glad to speak personally with anyone who has interest in
helping save this sanctuary. I told her that I, personally, didnt have access to huge sums of money to be used for this purpose. She said she was still glad to speak with me and share the information. You can research this further on the internet by typing in Primarily Primates in your search engine. It is likely you will find the PETA stuff first. (They are very well funded.) You can find out a lot more about this by going to www.friendsofanimals.org .
Definitely do the research. But if this is of importance to you I suggest you contact Priscilla Feral. It IS a big deal. You see, PETA has tons of money available for this project, and it is a huge publicity deal if they can take over this sanctuary. Even Jane Goodall, friend of Wally Swett and supporter of the sanctuary, is standing back until this is resolved. It is such a big deal that they cant afford to get involved. And her partner, Mark Beckoff, is one of the people who sent me to Primarily Primates for help in my project.
Its too weird for me to even think about. I hope that those of you who claim to care about apes will consider becoming educated and will look further into the situation and maybe even offer some help. Peace. Helen <.html

Okay,
I've been corrected. So, if it takes ten years to "greenlight" a project
why then weren't they working on a script for it?
The first script was worse then the one they made.
Personally, I like the middle one written by Sam Hamm,
back when Chris Cross was on the project. That was the
one that soul have been made. Not Burton's debacle.

writers, good directors, good actors - in short, people in front of, and behind the camera who are each at the top of thier game. If they are going to do that and then brush thier hands of it, fine. Just don't go calling it 'Planet of the Apes' is all. Call it something like 'Talking monkeys' instead. Dave

'Return to OZ' (The Disney live-action sequel) was pretty good. It could never have hoped to match the popularity of the original but - unlike Burton's Apes, it didn't make me feel embarrased. Cronenberg's 'The Fly' was, IMHO a brilliant example of how to succesfully 're-imagine' a movie. It can be done! Dave

.html this is for all the people who don't see the major difference in the 68
movie, an the 2001. the fabulous story line, and conflict, and
developement we see taylor go thru is brilliant writing. taylor
communicating with zira, and cornelius while writing on a pad. the
whole trial scene is genius.! then they take him to see landon ( YOU
CUT OUT HIS BRAIN)! after the trial, the dialogue between taylor, and
zaius keeps me glued to their words. the scene in the cave at the end,
and taylor talking to zaius while he has him tied up to a tree stump
for great role reversal. all this with gripping dialogue trying to
figure out how things got this way. the 2001 version isn't in the same
league. where is the great dialogue, conflict and character
developement. i tell ya, that whole 2001 movie reminds me of all those
movies i see that are made for the scifi channel at best. <.html

Yes!
It is a mediocre Made-For-TV movie
with production values comparable to
an episode of Lexx. What were they

Although that's a cool question, I don't think it's likely since
calls him "Dr. Milo," which is too formal for a brother. <.html
