OK, this is about "Lord of the Rings", not
POTA. But Peter Jackson is a long time POTA fan and was Roddy McDowall's choice
to helm the redo; Fox finally saw the light after it was too late. Anyway, some
POTA fans have held out hope Jackson would come back to POTA and, of course, Fox
will stay in the background while he creates a masterpiece ("King Kong" not
withstanding). After all, HE'S Peter Jackson.
Here's how far that gets him. Jackson has
released a statement saying that New Line Cinema, owner with MGM of the rights
to the "Rings" prequel "The Hobbit", has passed on his services as director of
the prequel. Apparently they are still engaged in a lawsuit over "Rings" profits
(Jackson says he hasn't been paid his fair share). So New Line is shopping for a
new director.
I find this pretty laughable. As far as I'm
concerned, New Line wouldn't have profits to squabble over if it wasn't for
Jackson. He's the guy who made those films what they are. Once again, Hollywood
can't see the forest for the trees. Sure, get some hack to do your prequel. I
just found this interesting. They never learn, do they? They think they can just
throw out a familiar title out there and spin gold. Maybe Tim Burton will do
"The Hobbit"?
Anyway, so much for Fox swooning if Peter
Jackson decided to do POTA. And for those who liked his "King Kong" or love
in-depth behind the scenes stuff, I recommend the new special edition of "King
Kong" that came out this week. - - - Jeff

Yeah, I'd be interested in reading
Broyles' script, too. Burton blames POTA2001 on the fact that Broyles' script
was too expensive and they had to start from scratch. I guess his script was
more science fiction. Though the only thing Burton has said was that it had 3
battles in it and he had to cut it down to one. That's all Burton needed was 3
battles! He couldn't even do one right. - - - Jeff

Yes, I'm working on one. No timeframe yet, but realistically,
probably not until after all the upcoming holidays.

.htmlI think it was the late 90's, showtime or cinemax, one of the two,
ran a very witty and funny promo for the movie series. I think if
anyone has a copy of it, they should submit it for volume 2, it's the
best APES teaser I've seen.

I'm sure it was buried when they decided it was too expensive
to make. From all accounts it was really good. On the
other
hand, when they decided Monkey Planet was too expensive to
shoot it didn't stop them from coming up with some great ideas.
Are you listening? Fox? Burton?

.html The 'shocking/surprise' finale for the TB remake is (sorta) the
starting point for a weekend of action and adventure in California
about a week from now when Blackcat Paintball Productions
( blackcatpaintball.com ) runs a Scenario game. If you've played
paintball and love POTA this would be the event for you ! And if
you've never played paintball before then this is a great place to
start, everyone will love having experts in the backround theme help
puzzle out the mysteries that we add on top of great paintball fun,
please consider bringing out some POTA stuff like banners, artifacts
and costumes - we'd really love to see some added color like that,

An additional 7 pages of Neil Foster's English-adapted version of the Hungarian Monkey planet are also now available to view. Thanks to Neil for all his hard work on these pages. Finally, Michael Whitty and Neil Foster's original comic story Within the Planet of the Apes is now available to view, and a PDF file is also available to download. Thanks to Mike and Neil for making this story available to a wide audience. Lots of good Apes comics to be thankful for this holiday. Greg

Comic book convention which the Burton remake "headlined" - with
displays, fox execs, presentations, etc. also featured Stan Winston
in person, promoting a project of his own, I don't remember what the
project was. It seemed like it was being rubbed in his face. But-
In the Q & A session a fan asked, "If you and Rick Baker got in a
fight, who would win?"
Winston replied (as he flexed) "I'D KICK HIS ASS!!!!"

Yes Dave, you are right but he may have brought in Winston as a
creative consultant or controller/conceptual artist etc.
He brought in Alan Lee and John Howe on the Lord Of The rings to
design everything because they had been associated with Rings for
years.
Peter Jackson is very aware of the experts in their fields. He
admires people like Winston as a fan.

Brolin in the test film, but as much as I disliked Burton's apes, I am
more grateful that Peter Jackson (or even more so Devlin and Emmerich)
didn't get a shot, as I strongly agree with the clerks 2 rant about
what a bore the lord of the rings were... Peter Jackson is a hack.

.htmlOver the past two months the Video section of the Group website (& Mirror site) has recieved an major upgrade. This upgrade installs a new plug-in that will hopefully solve the problems many have had in viewing the the Videos. The new plug-in adds controls to allow the user to pause, rewind, fast-forward and adjust the sound volume of each video. Since there are over 60 videos on the site and the plug-in had to be added to each individually, the upgrade as taken some time to complete.
To view the Videos it is recommended that the latest version of Windows Media Player be installed on your computer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

Thanks, Greg,
It's odd, but up until a few weeks ago I would experience total recall
with each new cover as it was thumbnailed on Hunter's site. Although I
hadn't seen these images for thirty odd years they had been burned
somewhere in the back of my mind...
... These past few weeks however I haven't recognised the covers at
all so I'm guessing this coincides with my interest in APES petering
out at that time - we're nearing the end of the run so that would make
sense.

OMG! YES! I never thought about him doing the "Ape"thing.
Perhaps his prestige scared me off. After all, after "Titanic",
need he work again?, but for him to get down on a POTA resurrection?
HELL YEAH!!!
If he takes the time he took to bring Titanic so vividly to the
screen (not to mention the tears brought to so many eyes, including
REAL mens), he can certainly breathe life back into our beloved apes...
That is if his heart is in it.
One's heart MUST be - in such a delicate task as that. Too many
were broken, obviously.
No cg apes, though. They have to be real.
It must be tangible... an almost, "I know you" kind of feeling.
Or, "I WANT to know you" feeling...
Is there anyone out there who can bring that back?!
Or is that art lost forever?
I want to know them again...
And we are the ones to ask who we want to be cast in those precious
roles, not the fatcats sittin' behind their desks with their Bellaire
vistas...
Want it to sail???
Ask the people...
Sorry if I interrupt...

Can't argue with that.
They just don't make 'em like him any more.
I remember he and Gregory Peck having a
knock down drag out fight in a Western. It
was a true battle of the Titans. He was THE
choice when you needed someone to play
Ben Hur, or Moses. Tough sandals to fill.
I can't think of a single actor today who

was any need for most of Burton's Apes to undergo the makeup
process.Everything had to be dubbed anyway, the makeup left little or
no room for flexibility, so why not just have a double in there and let
Tim and Helena voice it, like an animation--seriously, what would
actually be lost from their performances? I accept that John Chambers'
makeup allowed the actors to deliver powerful performances, so that's a
whole different case, but Burton's Apes could, physically, have been
played by any stand in. John, Scrolls.

They were dubbed. If you listen to the outakes it easy to see the
difference in Roth's voice. I'm sure it could have been better.
Burton, no doubt had them wear their dentures to the ADR sessions, which defeats
the purpose, to my way of thinking. When they did the dubbing in the
original's they wore just the appliances. They found not only did they
need them to sound the same, but Kim was unable to stay in character without at
least some of the makeup on. But when you have the cast and crew busting
out in laughter because Roth's line "Apart from my Father" keeps coming out, "A
Fart From My Father" then you need to lose the dentures and loop it in the
studio. They all seem to have speech
impediments. slurring and lisping their way through their lines does
not help with the illusion. It may be okay for Quest For Fire type cavemen
on an insurance commercial,
but it's not okay for a major motion picture. As for using stand-ins, I
wish they had dubbed
McDowall's voice for Beneath. Watson did a good job, but there was
something not quite
right, and I knew it even before I realized it was another actor. But
in the new movie if you're going to act, act. I'd feel cheated if I didn't
get to suit up, and I'm sure they felt the same, in spite of all the
hardships. <.html

Yes, I belong to most all of the POTA groups and it's in the
top two. You weren't here for the schism with POTADG,
which created a lot of bad blood, but now that's all water
under the bridge. They're both fine groups with much to
offer. There isn't much in the POTA world you can't find
on one or the other, ss well as links to the best POTA sites.

.htmlFirst of all, last week's issue was actually 111, not 110. My bad. That issue contained the final installment in the reprinting of the Planet adaptation, so this week's issue sees the first chapter in a reprinting of the Beneath adaptation. Like the Planet reprinting, there are some small differences from the original adaptation, as well as new splash pages, so I'm including these pages in the weekly PDFs. Also included this issue is another chapter in the Battle adaptation. Also newly available on Hunter's site this week is issue 3 of Simian Scrolls. This issue focused on the TV series. There's an outstanding guide to the TV series in this issue, among other things. Thanks to John Roche, Dave Ballard and all the Scrolls contributors.
Finally, Neil Foster has completed his English adaptation of the Hungarian Monkey Planet comic. All pages are now available to view and download. Thanks to Neil and to Mike
Whitty for making this available. Greg <.html

So is the loony-tunes, cartoon mouth that appears whenever he roars!
For some reason the DVD seems to highlight it.

too far, and is disrespectful to some excellent cartoons in which you

the Looney Tunes Stranger than Fiction dvd? Planet of the Taz,
Beneath the Planet of the Taz, and Enough with the Planet of the Taz.
Porky and Daffy crash land on the planet, and a lot of the art and
shots pay homage to the films. They are pretty cool, and worth
checking out.
