The W stands for Walker. Oddly enough I saw most of the POTA films at
the Walker theater.

Not for value purposes but I would have liked to have seen all of

If you can recall the exact date you saw that on, and have The New York Times on microfilm at your library, you can look it up in their movie section.

Something I've never been able to find in TNYT is the 1971 "Two Apes for the price of one!" double bill of PLANET/BENEATH.  I saw it in October 1971, but in a theatre in Watertown, NY way upstate, but it doesn't seemed to have played in the NYC area.

And if I could find my damned Planet scrapbook I could find it easier as well...got a million clippings from 1968 on in there.

I don't remember an APES double bill of the first 2 pictures ever playing in NYC or I would have been there. First time I ever heard of the double bill was when I bought the poster a few years later.

Hi James,

True to a point.

But if you have nuclear caparbility from the start, you would use it
if the other side threatens to use theirs.

Conventional warfare in 1992 may fit in the begiining, but it has
been written that in 1992 was the start of the nuclear war, thus no
conventional warfare ever took hold; maybe parhaps after, but who
would be around anyway to continue the fight? Perhaps apes and men
were in skirmishes after the nuclear war, to fight for dominance,
but that's about all.

Regards.

Peter.

I just want to make another point about semantics. World War I began in 1914. But in 1914 it wasn't refered to as World War I. In fact it was not called World War I until WWII began 20 years later. Thus, just because it was refered to as the Nuclear War, doesn't mean it began as a Nuclear War.

Since 1945 there have been numerous conflicts in which one or both sides had nuclear capability. To date, there has been no nuclear exchanges. Not even minor ones so the logic of your statement escapes me.

I think it is just semantics here. The film Battle or even the other sources don't give any specifics so you can't make an absolute statement like "no conventional warfare ever took hold". What we do know was that there was a final war that began in 1992 and ended with a full blown nuclear exchange. It could have started as a conventional war that over time escalated to limited tactical nuclear exchanges at first and then finally to an all-out nuclear war.

the rarest POTA are easily the variant price editions released to only a few cities
of Adventures On The POTA #5 6 7 - possibly no more than 20 copies exist worldwide of each issue

Not for value purposes but I would have liked to have seen all of
Marvels adaptions bound together in a single trade paperback.

You're confusing the terms "fiction" and "serious." They're apples
and oranges, so you're statement makes no sense. There can be
serious fiction and non-serious fiction, just as there can be serious
non-fiction and non-serious non-fiction. Whether or not something is
true has nothing to do with whether or not it's serious. I refer you
to "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Star Trek" as examples --
the first is non-serious fiction, and the second is serious fiction,
in that neither is true but one is meant to be taken seriously and
the other is not. Now compare "The Daily Show With John Stewart"
with "The CBS Evening News" -- the first is non-serious non-fiction,
while the second is serious non-fiction, in that both are presenting
the truth (the news) but one in a humorous fashion and the other in a
serious fashion.

I think that a case could be made that the ape society suffered from
arrested development. For the orangutans this helped them stay the
ruling class and hide the secrets of the past. However, the Chimps
being the intellectual class didn't buy into many of the tenants of the
religion and were the most progressive thinking.

My name is RAUL (rezuleta). Some of you may know me from other "POTA"
related groups, or 'scifi' related/themed 'yahoo-groups.'

Quick comment. In the original, and later re-written (Caesar's
timeline) - could there have been 2 different (but same) LAWGIVERS?

In the original 1968 film, and 1970 sequel - I envisioned the
prophetically (Iconic)-praised image of THE LAWGIVER to have been this
really irritating, perhaps even more anal than 'Doctor Zaius:' Beware
of Man ... he will take your world, and make a desert of it"'
But then when we actually meet the re-written Caesar's timeline
LAWGIVER, he seems more humaine. We see him playing or being
surrounded by both Ape and human children. He no longer appears (seems
like) the human (man) hating 'Zaius' like iconic image from the
alternate future.

Welcome Raul.

If you're a Lawgiver fan be sure check-out our weekly
feature "Lessons from the Lawgiver".
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/LFTL.htm

To answer your question, there seem to be two schools of thought. The
first is that they are two different apes. The Lawgiver we see in
Battle is living in the mid to late 27th century as shown by the
openning title "North America, 2670 A.D." The Lawgiver refered to in
Planet and Beneath lived almost a century later. Zaius states that he
wrote the sacred scrolls 1200 years earlier. Planet takes place in
the mid to late 40th century so 1200 years earlier would be the mid
to late 28th century almost 100 years after the scenes in Battle.

The second theory is that they are the same ape. Zaius may have been
rounding as people tend to do with long spanses of time. The Lawgiver
in Battle does speak of "evil men who betrayed God's trust". So he
can't be seen as totally pro-human and that the negative passages
about man were written about the humans who lived prior to the Ape
revolution. Over the centuries religious zealots in Ape society
highlighted the portions of the scrolls that were negative about man
and ignored anything positive the original Lawgiver had written.

Either theory seems to fit, choose the one you like best.

Anyone know if the free POTA story that used to be on the Mr. Comics
website is still up? Under the 'News' section it says to click on the
"FREE STORY" link on the front page, but there's no link to be found. And
when I click on the faux magazine cover, it only brings up the magazine
cover in a larger format. Originally I thought there was an option to go
right from that to the story, but I'm not finding anything right now.

Happy National Gorilla Suit Day! (http://tinyurl.com/cb7k9). This week's issue sports an Aldo hell-bent on hunting down mutants. Which is one way of celebrating the holiday, I suppose, but really all that's called for is putting on your gorilla suit and going door-to-door.

In this week's chapter of the Beneath adaptation, Brent is a bit of a spoilsport regarding the holiday, as there are no gorillas, or any apes at all for that matter, to be found in this week's chapter.

Thanks, and have a happy and safe N.G.S.D.! (Unless you're a mutant dedicated to the eradication or re-enslavement of apes.)

Yes, and No, Raul.  There is only one Lawgiver, but if you hold with the Hasslein Theory of time being like an infinite number of lanes going into the future, then everyone is "different" in some way depending on what lane you're in, and since it's pretty clear to any primate with half a brain that a lane has been hopped when the three "Aponauts" return to 1973 in ESCAPE, then the Lawgiver seen in BATTLE is supposed to the same one mentioned in the first two films, however with a changed personality because of the changed past created by the birth and events of Caesar's life.  That change being the more tolerant teachings and wishes of Caesar.

I agree.

I guess that's why there are various timelines dealing with the POTA

It really boils down to the fact that POTA the movie was not suppose

Yes, track # 6 SUBJUGATION SOUL.
It's a classic, though 1991 Restaurant has a great retro feel too.

That link didn't work for me.
But if you go to the CDs page
and click next to the track it
plays a sample of the track.

Okay, now, how many did not know Roddy McDowall was a Homo?
Really, now?
I didn't give a damn. I still loved him!
Rumor had it even back then but it was hushed. Hell, who knew
Raymond Burr was?!
So was Rock Hudson but his sway got him killed...
At least Roddy and Raymond had enough sense to stay with one life
partner...
Roddy died from lung cancer and Big ole Raymond passed due to some
overweight disease...
I don't care. Roddy was my man... I loved (and still love) him
unconditionally.
I'm just glad Tim Roth loves women!

POTA music completists might want to check this one out (I bet Rory's
already got it!). FSM produce some great scores and deserve your business.

<www.screenarchives.com>

The Last Run/Crosscurrent/The Scorpio Letters (1971/1967)

FSM presents a tripleheader of Silver Age scores from the "mod" era of
the late 1960s and early 1970s: a feature film soundtrack album by
Jerry Goldsmith, a TV movie score by the same composer, and a TV movie
score by Dave Grusin.

Crosscurrent (1971) -- also known as The Cable Car Murder -- was a
busted TV pilot aired as a TV movie. Shot on location in San
Francisco, the film was an ambitious attempt to give an African
American actor (Robert Hooks) a starring vehicle, in this case as a
homicide detective. Goldsmith's unorthodox score -- performed entirely
by rhythm section -- is quite brief, but a jewel in its tense, angular
"mod" action style. It features what would soon become Goldsmith's
main title theme to Escape From the Planet of the Apes, in a rare
example of the composer repeating himself.

My feelings exactly, Paul...If you don't care, why are you talking
about it?...It's like the Michael Jackson song, "Ain't nobody's
business, but mine and my baby's..." then why are you singing about
it?...

I did.  He was a friend of Kim's.
So was James Coco.  For a girl
that was making out with Brando

theater circles, and in Hollyweird that
wasn't really all that big a deal anyway.

I'm about to upload 2 images from the Russian Language version of
Monkey Planet.

Thing is, this book appears to contain more than just Boulle's novel
and these illustrations may not even relate but having said that they
do seem to show some apes.

I can't read Russian so if anyone can throw some light on these and
possibly translate those captions I'd be interested.

Thanks,
Dave

And by weird coincidence, Simian Scrolls has just sent a list of
questionsm, to Tom Scott, the composer, who has agreed to an
interview.I love the Conquest score---it's got that 'other world'
feel whilst still being familiar that works so well for Apes.John,

The Ape language, English, didn't evolve much over 2000 years--a guy in
England, even in 1066, would be virtually unintelligible to an English
speaker in 2007.The Apes clearly have scope to create new words --
'Oper', for example---but don't hint at any dialects, other Ape
languages.Boulle's novel suggests the Apes slavishly (no pun intended)
copied superior humans.I think, in reality, Ape language would have
altered a tremendous amount and that, 2000 years on, Taylor would
struggle to converse with Zira et al.You know Al, her cousin? John,
Scrolls.

When I first started collecting Apes stuff Years ago I started with the

A Style one sheet? It looks like the British one sheet poster. The
orange one with the apes running and the two apes holding Gov. Breck.

In one of my own 'POTA'(alt.versions), Parts 1 & 2 make-up one
complete story. Beginning, middle and ending. Then when "ESCAPE ..."
is introduced, it kinda spins-off into an alternate story (movie)
parallel with the original 2; but full of plot holes.

Same with "CONQUEST...," although the last 3 "POTA" films, kinda
make up their own (semi-separate) "APE" movie - remomtely, connected
to the orig. 2.

Don't know if much of (what I said) makes sense,or not?

I won't even bring up "POTA-The TV Series"(1974).
