If anyone is interested in immortalising themeselves in a small role - there's always room for more gorillas and voice actors in this and other productions.

All you need is a microphone that plugs into your PC.

I think that I would definitely want to be a Chimpanzee for the simple reason that they were sympathetic to man's plight.

For me it would be a Chimpanzee, the most well rounded or so it seems,
of the three species from the movies. Chimps aren't overly antagonistic
as Gorillas are (except in reality its the other way around) nor are
they as pompous and power mad as the Orangutangs.

That's one I also misheard for years, and part of it was because both words makes sense in context to the statement. "Your greed" could be a reference to the nature of man (from Zaius' POV). Admittedly though, "your breed" works a little better.

So, what else have everyone misheard/misunderstood? Aside from the two mentioned above, I can think of a couple others that I wondered about for a while and (I think) finally figured out.

    PLANET

Zaius: "He eats up his food supply in the forest, then migrates to our green *belts* and ravages our crops. As a child, I hear both "welch" and "welts", though neither made sense to me.

    Julius: "Shut up you freak!!"

Taylor: "Surely you're ???" (don't know if that one was ever solved, actually).

    BENEATH

Zaius (in the Hall of Busts): "They are obscene!!" (I didn't even misunderstood that one- I just never knew what he said).

Ursus (in the Cathedral): "Rope! Block and tackle! Get at it!!" (not 100% sure on "Get at it")

Ursus (after Brent strikes the organ): " ???? !! Over there!!" Always thought it was "Zaius!! Over there!!", though why would he be saying that to Zaius?

Also, before the days of VCRs & DVDs when I recorded the movies on audio tape and listened to them repeatedly, I thought the dialog with Brent and Maddox at the beginning of BENEATH went:

Skipper: "Brent- Earth...did you contact Earth?". I (obviously) figured out subsequently that it was

    Skipper: "Brent.."

    Brent: "Sir"

    Skipper: "Did you contact Earth?"

I'll probably think of others, but I figure these were a good conversation starter.

I've always gone with the notion that the building sinking underground and then being covered up was just the end result of the nuclear blasts. Also, it'd be a safe bet to say that not all of the building ended up in their original proximity to each other. So while BENEATH is for the most part geographically correct (GCT, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the NY Public Library, and Radio City Music Hall are all within proximity of each other), it's not much of a stretch to think that the Stock Exchange ended up in a different location.

However, someone pointed out once how far away Queensborough Plaza is from everything else, so Brent and Nova could have easily been travelling for a long time before reaching the Mutant's city. Towards the end of the film the gorillas seem to get to the city fairly quickly, but then again there nothing to show how much time has actually passed.

Amazing too... how so many famous landmarks survived,
    being 'underground' .

Any good theories why so much wound up underground?
Where'd all of that covering dirt and rocks come from? <<

I've always presumed those things were supposed to be from the cave Cornelius excavated. Nice attention to detail from the set decorator/production design.

I wonder how the apes explained the presence of such artefacts in excavations?

No doubt they assumed that all such things were created by apes.

It's interesting---the Chinese probably invented dragons and flying
monsters after digging up fossils. The Saxons regarded Stonehenge as
the work of Giants. Many Victorians still beleived in Giants etc due
to big leg fossils.I think the Apes, those that had access to this
information, may have done the old human trick of making anything
inexplicable 'divine' and put it down to the gods.John, Scrolls.

Well I guess the biggest misheard/misunderstanding of dialog
    happened in Conquest.
Senior Armando called out 'Lousy INHUMAN bastards' but the
    authorities didn't believe him.
They insisted they heard 'Lousy HUMAN bastards' and then further
compounded the error by suggesting that Armando's circus ape
    actually shouted the words.
This of course led to the revolt of the Apes.
All because someone misheard what was said.
So I guess we can trace the Planet of the Apes to some over zealous,
    hard of hearing Police Officers.

Bit like when the Order of Monks went back to check their original

This doesn't really qualify as misheard dialog, but speaking of the
quote, as a kid, the first four times I saw Conquest, aired by CBS,
    Caesar shouted "LOUSY HUMAN!"

I was in for a real shock when the film hit syndication, and the when
local channel aired "LOUSY HUMAN BASTARDS!" I fell out of my chair.

I've seen similar sets to that before. But never in that box or with
as many pieces. I've only seen them in the flat boxes with the window
cutouts so you could see what was inside the box. Also think it has a
    Battle feel to it.

The subject of Ape archaeology and dogma gets my fan-fic brain ticking over.

There might be a story in that.

I actually think that Penneys may have had something
to do with the release of this set. I always liked
plastic armies etc. for me, there was more adventure
and imagination that could be utilized. These sets
always get large prices at auctions, I'm certain they
are pretty rare. The box on mine is still in good

In BENEATH, I'd always thought the same thing that Ursus yelled when Brent struck the organ...it did sound as if he yelled "Bailiff!"  My captions on the DVD, however, show that he yelled, "Men...over there!"

Much earlier in the same movie, when Brent is attending to Skipper, it has shown that Brent says, "As soon as you feel better, we'll run a navigational lesson".  The original shooting scripts have stated that it was "a navigational estimate".

Well I guess the biggest misheard/misunderst anding of dialog
      happened in Conquest.
      Brendan.

We are so spoilt in today's climate of instant everything and access
to vast varieties of outlets for our passions.
In the mid seventies this was not the case.
When Marvel/Curtis released the Planet Of The Apes Black and White
      comic it was a treasure.
Every month I stormed my local Magazine shop to get the latest issue.
Growing up in New Zealand in a time when it took anywhere from three
to six months for things to arrive after there debut, I was grateful
for this comic.Issue 27 never even arrived.
I loved Terror since it was new Apes. The art is fantastic, no
question. So is the story. Good Pulp storytelling. Throw it all in
      and enjoy the fantastical.
Telly was full of Westerns, Daniel Boone, Trek, Lost in Space etc,
so to see this thrown into the Planet Of The Apes stories, was
      wonderful and pertinant.
If you want sophistication, then go read Shakespeare.
I want Action and Adventure with my comics about Talking Apes.
Terror On the Planet Of The Apes provided this. Jason and Alexander
were a good team. One Blond and one Brunette. The order of the day.

So I have to agree with John on this one. But Mr Scrolls, I want a
      lot of money for this...
      Brendan.

I hate every ape from CHIMPAN-A to CHIMPAN-Z.
      Simpsons already did it.

Hurray. Everyone but me loved the silly Terror. I do
read Shakespeare and see nothing wrong with having my
RUNAWAYS hardcover next to my Oxford Shakespeare. I
preferred the movie adapatations to Terror, which was
just silly. How many frakking times could Brutus get
away? The big brains in jars reminded me of Star Treks
"Gamesters of Triskelion" which I also liked better
than Terror. Each of us is an individual. I don't
recall telling anyone ELSE not to like it, just that I
didn't. We're all individuals with individual tastes.
I suppose the next thing one of you will say is "ANY
APES IS BETTER THAN NO APES", which is as bad as the
Trekkies, who say the same thing.

      "400 Quatloos on the newcomers"

This is one of those debates where there really is no right or wrong. It all has to do with personal taste. What one person considers high art another may consider as crap. It is all depends on one's own point of view.

I liked the "Terror" series but felt that sometimes it just pushed the envelope a bit too far. But that is just my personal opinion.

I think we should all just agree to disagree on this one.

James, I'm fine to agree to disagree on Terror. It's not like it will
produce world peace or a cure for cancer. It's very possible that my
affectedly 'put out' posturing has been taken at face value--I know
lots of folks hate Terror and I enjoy being the lone voice in the
wilderness--well I did until bloody Brendan spoiled things by
agreeing with me.If at any stage it looks as though I'm serious or
angry pleae be aware that I am almost invariably just being an arse
and mean nothing by it.Sometimes the humour this side of the pond
loses a lot in the translation over there.'Nuff said! John, Scrolls.

Okay, okay--I feel like I have a public duty to ensure that Brendan's

      it down for you.John, Scrolls.

I hate every ape from CHIMPAN-A to CHIMPAN-Z.
      Simpsons already did it.

Don't know if anyone caught 'Saul of the Mole Men on Adult Swim this past
Sunday night (it's a parody/sendup of live action children's shows from
the 70's), but the title of the episode was 'Beneath the Planet of the
People'. No other obvious POTA references that I noticed, but being that
BENEATH is my favorite of the five films I always get a kick whenever
there's a reference to it elsewhere since PLANET is the one that usually
gets quoted, parodied, and so forth. Come to think of it, this is only
the third time I've heard/seen a comedic reference to BENEATH- the other
two being the St. Patrick's Cathedral/Doomsday Bomb bit in Futurama, and
a Dennis Miller stand up routine. Anybody know of any others?

It's the penultimate issue! Featuring the penultimate chapter of one of the two titanic adaptations! Which one will conclude next week in the final issue of the series and which will continue into the Mighty World of Marvel series? Be here next week to find out. In the meantime, enjoy this week's letter column after you download the issue.

Also this week on Hunter's site, it's part 2 of the BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime adaptation of Pierre Boule's novel. Thanks to Neil Moxham and David Bruan for providing the files. Also thanks to Neil Foster for his nifty CD case art. Looks for part 3 next week.

Looney Tunes Stranger Than Fiction DVD release, the second part of
the POTA parody, Beneath the Planet of the TAZ. I've mentioned it
before, it's a preety cool parody, with a cameo by an animated
      Charlton Heston. Worth checking out.

Terror On The Planet Of The Apes?  Personally, I thought that it was a very dynamic story, I really enjoyed the adventures with Jason, Alexander, Brutus, Gunpowder Julius, Steely Dan, Malaguena, Lightsmith, Gilbert and the others...unfortunately for us fans, their stories never were able to be continued because Marvel came to the end of the movie adaptations and decided to cancel any more stories for Terror...I must agree, however, that Brutus did get away with quite a bit...but again, it was a great story.

James, I'm fine to agree to disagree on Terror. It's not like it will
produce world peace or a cure for cancer. It's very possible that my
affectedly 'put out' posturing has been taken at face value--I know
lots of folks hate Terror and I enjoy being the lone voice in the
wilderness-- well I did until bloody Brendan spoiled things by
agreeing with me.If at any stage it looks as though I'm serious or
angry pleae be aware that I am almost invariably just being an arse
and mean nothing by it.Sometimes the humour this side of the pond
loses a lot in the translation over there.'Nuff said! John, Scrolls.

releases of this playset...all by "Multiple Toymakers"
(that's the name of the company)..

There was a large deluxe set in an illustrated box
            with 4 windows (1st pic)...
then a set in the illustrated box with no windows (2nd
            pic)....
then a set in a more rectangular carboard box (3rd
            pic)..
a smaller illustrated box with the round window (4th
            pic)...
and the smallest set with just one window (5th pic)...

of course the small set I have just came in a plain
brown cardboard box that I must have ordered from
            Penny's or Sears...

I included different pics of contents but not sure
            which comes from which set...

and an ad from a catalog featuring two different
            sets...a 67 piece set and a 16 piece set!

            "POTA Toy Historian" Tim!

Like many, I collected (the now long gone) Marvel Planet of the Apes
magazine. When it was abruptly cancelled - for reasons I've never been
able to discover. Did fans have a lack of interest after the movie
adaptations were done? Well, whatever the reason, here are some
            thoughts.

1 - Why George Tuska for the POTA adaptation? He was a terrible artist.

2 - Alfredo Alacala was my favorite Apes artist. The only thing he did
that I didn't care for was the A/O Bomb from Beneath. Other than that I
            enjoyed his art immensely.

3 - Notice that they used the first draft for Battle? I wonder why?
Ceasar glowing and such were in the novelization by Gerrold (which I
            still have).

4 - Was there ever a straight up novelization of Apes the movie? I
remember getting the paperback and being so excited, then reading it
and I was like - WHAT THE HELL? But I did enjoy it.

5 - Some of the other Apes Comics in the Magazine I really enjoyed. My
favorite was Evolution's Nightmare, but the unfinished Future History
Chronicles was pretty well done as well. I liked Tom Suttons artwork
            there.

6 - Pretty much all the other apes comics from other publishers were
crap. The silly Adventure comics like ApeNation and Urchaks Folly were
just trash. Revolution (what the hell is this insistence on San Deigo?)
was better than Adventure, but only marginally so. In some ways
Revolution reminded me of the Return of the Man From UNCLE, The Fifteen
Years Later Affair. A fan did it, love was behind it, but in the end it
            was lacking.

That one I always understood. A navigational lesson really doesn't make any sense, which goes to show that whoever was doing the CC translation really wasn't paying that much attention. Wonder if it was the same person who turned "breed" into "greed"?

There are three parts, Planet, Beneath, and Enough of the Planet of the
Taz. I've never "You Tubed" before, I'll look into it, and try to post
            some images.

If you listen closely with the center speaker turned up, Ursus does
say "Men, over there!". My guess is that they were improvising the
final scene somewhat and no one ever caught the he said 'Men'.

Also, Brent does say navigational 'estimate'. How they got lesson is
              weird.

One of the great captioning mistakes is in Conquest where Aldo is
              captioned as Otto.

Like a lot of the [as] shows, I think it's going to be one of those shows that people are either completely into or completely uninterested in. At the very least though, I'd suggest giving it the benefit of the doubt and watch a full episode or two. In some circles, the entire first part of POTA (the trek across the desert) is considered "boring". But there's no denying it's a great set up for what follows.

Very nice indeed, and the parts about "the path ahead unclear" and "the
answer lay within" is particularly relevant to myself at the moment as
I'm going through one of those periods in life where there are a lot of
things in flux. It'll work out though.

Yeah, but I'm not part of that circle. That heightens

In case anyone needs some background noise- it just started at 2 PM.

There's also what looks to be a pretty interesting documentary on the whole Star Trek phenomena at 9PM tonight, followed by something called 'Star Trek Tech' at 11PM. Both shows repeat starting at 1AM.

Also, something about Shatner inventing every modern gadget in existence, starting at 5PM. Star Trek Tech follows at 7.

There is a huge market for remaking old toys eh?

More toy companies should be considering this as they battle against gaming consoles for kids attention, they should start focusing on adults looking to revisit childhood memories.

I disagree they should be making NEW toys based on old favorites. Imagine an Ape City playset with the plastic sheet for the ground and a bunch of little plastic Ape buildings, horses and of course Apes! Leave the old toys alone. Collectors like me who have the originals watch the price drop every time something's re-issued. Like the Aurora/Addar models.

But are you collecting for love or profit?

If you are collecting for love of the media, then price is irrelevant.

If you are collecting for speculation and profit - then you have to accept a level of risk in any investment.

I collect for love of apes, could care less what something I own
would go for on ebay, take no joy in someone elses misery of not
being able to own an ape item they may want... I own a complete set
of megos & original addar models, and I was really irritated
in the early 90's when the mego prices tripled overnight because a
couple of dealers decided to ask an exorbitant amount and someone
paid it. That and the rumours of the Arnold remake. I wish polar
lights had completed the model series, so the others would be more
attainable. I'd love to build a bigger battalion of mego soldiers.

of megos & original addar models, and I was really irritated
in the early 90's when the mego prices tripled overnight because a
couple of dealers decided to ask an exorbitant amount and someone
paid it. That and the rumours of the Arnold remake. I wish polar
lights had completed the model series, so the others would be more
attainable. I'd love to build a bigger battalion of mego soldiers.

Uh oh looks like I started something here...let me give you an example of what I mean. Before Polar Lights re-issued the Aurora LOST IN SPACE Cyclops model the original I had on my shelf would go for close to a thousand dollars had I wished to sell it or not (which I didn't and never would). After the re-issue the value has plummeted. Shouldn't I feel bad about that anyway regardless of how much I treasure the item?

Bruce, the value someone else puts on an item shouldn't have any reflection on the value you place on an item.

YOU have the original, it's still the rare collectible it always has been.

Fiscal value is really a matter of perception.  The only true cash value is what someone is willing to pay you.

I always thought that the pacing in the first film was exceptionally well done. You have an almost two hour film that (story wise) takes place over a several month period and you really can't help but appreciate how well the whole thing is structured. Conversely, the 2001 films runs slightly longer, takes places over 3-4 day period, and still seems rushed.

As with so many other things, epic storytelling seems to be a lost art in Hollywood.

The original does lend itself to a great sense of anticipation during the opening minutes, you know whats going on, but until the astronauts discover it for themselves it just heigtens the tension.

These Mego Star Trek repops are a collaberation between Diamond Select and
                Doctor Mego:

                http://www.megodoctor.com/

Doctor Mego already had made the factory made repro blank pants and colored
shirts before so he had some materials on hand already.

Although, he does repros of Mego Ape stuff, most of those are hand cast. But
I am sure if a viable licence offer and toy comapny collabertation (I don't
think Doc could do the mass distribution stuff himself which is why he is
working with Diamond select) could be established, he'd take on the Ape
                figures.

I agree with Bruce, that new toys based on the old favourites are a
better way to go. But not for the price protection reason.
The old toys are already here and overpriced.
With any product that becomes valuable, you attract the rip off
                merchants.
Producing replicas will allow such merchants to sell replicas as the
authentic model and nobody wants this.
How many of us have enough skill to pick the fake from the real?
When I had a collectable store, the numbers of fake figures brought in
to sell were astounding. Of course this was Ireland and chancers are
a way of life here, but fortunately they were unknowledgable chancers.
I think original toys should be protected for those who want them. They
should be hard to come by. That is part of the fun. The treasure hunt
is far more fun than the hand out.
I cannot afford most of the old toys. I have mostly given up trying,
but I still enjoy the new Toys like, Sideshow or Medicom brought out.
                Brendan.

                Imagine an
                > Ape City playset with the plastic sheet for the ground and a bunch
                of little
                > plastic Ape buildings, horses and of course Apes! Leave the old
                toys alone.

                time
