Subject: Simian Scrolls #13 Contest
.html

Issue #13 of Simian Scrolls with be shipping in the next few weeks. From what I'm told it is another great issue with a few surprizes.

Now anyone visiting the group's Yahoo Home page http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/ can preview the cover of #13. There is just one detail missing. The cover photo has been blacked out.

If you can identify the character & actor that has been blacked out, you will win a free copy of SS #13 and a set of limited edition Graham Hill cards.

All entries must include the exact character name & actor name and must be emailed to me directly at JamesA1102@.... Posts to the group will not count.

The first person to email me with the correct answer will win. Good luck everyone!

While perusing IMDB.COM, I was reading that Sal Mineo complained about his make-up, so they decided to kill Milo off earlier than intended. Anyone know when he was originally going to die? Was he going to get Landoned, and lobotomized? Killed by vengeful humans after Cornelius kills the orderly? Anywhere I can read how he was originally going to die or where in the film?

This next topic maybe strayin OFF (APES) TOPIC a little bit... but has
anyone else seen, or catched glimpse of the new Trailer/Previews
for "RESIDENT EVIL(3): Extinction" (movie-not VG), starring 'MILLA
JOVOVICH.' In one version, they start off running a typical, ordinary
tourism ad for a trip to Sin City 'LAS VEGAS.' Then communications
start beaking down. Things/transmission kinda die out. Then, the camera
starts to zoom out, slowly, from a destroyed (nuked) 'LAS VEGAS,' all
covered up with tons of desert sand. Looking more like an abandoned
ghost-town.
They also show you the remains of the 'New York, New York' casino, with
the replica of the Statue of Liberty, but abit deteriorated. Y'all
gotta see it. It's abit reminicent of the 'POTA'(1968) finale, but
different.

Its great the way POTA influences so many modern films like that.

Someone should put together a site detailing all the films and such that have those nods to POTA.

Is the trailer on the Apple trailers site?

Oh, I think that had more to do with the shooting schedule, or it may just be a BS publicity story.

Issue #13 of Simian Scrolls with be shipping in the next few weeks. From what I'm told it is another great issue with a few surprizes.

Now anyone visiting the group's Yahoo Home page http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/ can preview the cover of #13. There is just one detail missing. The cover photo has been blacked out.

If you can identify the character & actor that has been blacked out, you will win a free copy of SS #13 and a set of limited edition Graham Hill cards.

All entries must include the exact character name & actor name and must be emailed to me directly at JamesA1102@aol. com. Posts to the group will not count.

The first person to email me with the correct answer will win. Good luck everyone!

Looks like it's Julius to me

The Simpsons have mentioned Apes plenty of times. Like the Apes Musical where Troy MCclure sings about how he hates ever ape from "Chimpan-A to Chimpanzee" or when Homer is going up in the shuttle and hopes they're not going to "That terrible Planet of the Apes!"

Its great the way POTA influences so many modern films like that.

Someone should put together a site detailing all the films and such that have those nods to POTA.

Congratulation to Jose Diez for correctly answering Dr. Galen as played by Wright King in the original Planet of the Apes.

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. The most popular answer was Julius played by Buck Kartalian but answers also varied from Ursus (James Gregory) in Beneath to Biff Elliot as the Orangutan in the TV episode of 'The Cure'.

Issue 13 of Simian Scrolls will be available in a few weeks. Ordering info will posted in the group at that time.

Yes that's how he died.  The question was: due to Sal Mineo's complaints about the makeup it was decided to kill him off early.

Therefore was there an alternate story line that was changed to the gorilla strangling scene?

I myself figured the same thing.

Milo was necessary as a character ONLY as the means
to define someone who figured out how the spacecraft
worked... sunce it was obvious that by virtue of their
areas of expertise, Zira and Cornelius could not have
figured it out. Presumably Milo had either the skills
to figure out enough of it, or was something of a pro-
digy, a form of savant perhaps, that allowed him to rea-
son out how the spacecraft worked. Milo was the means
to get them back to the present-day Earth, then after
that... he was no longer need to carry on the storyline.

And incidentally... Milo being a simian 'savant' has
never been considered before, as the means to how Apes
with technology no better than early 19th century Amer-
ica figured out how to operate and launch a late 20th
century spacecraft, at least well enough to get it off
the ground and on its way- automation not withstanding.
We didn't get to know Milo well enough to determine the
source of his 'genius', such as it was. He may even have
been carrying the genes for the next level of evolutionary
development of the Chimpanzees for increased intelligence!
But... there's no way to be sure, now.

I personally don't believe that's true. The script would have been
written well before Mineo's claustrophobia (if I spelt that right I
deserve a medal) became evident. I do recall the director stating
(with regard to the script) that it was marvellous and that he barely
had to change a thing. I think I have also heard Roddy or Kim say that
because of Mineo's problems it was 'fortunate' his character was
    killed off early.

I think the Milo dies when and how originally intended by Dehn.

That seems to be the case, according to all the script drafts
available...I just don't see what purpose the character would have
served to have lasted longer...As I said before, it would only be
    delaying the inevitable...

Ah, I've seen the movie several times. What I was wondering was if as IMDB. COM claims, he was not going to be killed this early, when was he going to be offed? Personally if I'd written it, after Zira revealed she could speak, the three apes would have gone before the committee, Milo would have been less than forthcoming and he would have been taken away on a 'seperate tour' and been experimented on, ala Landon.

Sal mineo's character Milo was killed off early in the film of Escape,
when he, Cornelius and Zira were taken to the zoo after they crashed,
they were in a cage next to to another adjoining cage holding an angry
gorilla, who had I suppose emotional issues, with this in mind,Milo
walked to close to the bars of the cage joining to 2 cages, thus the
angry gorilla go a hold on him and strangled Milo.

    Subject: Wonder Woman-POTA connections
    .html
I just started watching episodes of the old WonderWoman TV series on
DVD and noticed some connections to POTA.

The pilot episode had 2 Escape actors: Eric Braeden as a Nazi pilor and
John Randolph (Committee Chairman) as a US General.
The first actual episode had Bradford Dillman as a Nazi spy.

I remembered as a kid, seeing the episode "WonderWoman vs. Gargantua"
and recognizing the POTA makeup being used.
(screen captures of that episode are on Hunter's site:
    https://pota.goatley.com/ )
Not 100% effective, but it could have been an improvement over the
generic gorilla suit used in Escape.

After watching some episodes, I started reading about WW online and
discovered that there was an attempt to make a WW series by the Batman
TVV show producers. A truely horrible 5 minute film was made as a test
    ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=RTmZzKjDq3w )
and that starred Linda Harrison as WonderWoman (but only in the
    mirror. Don't ask).

The website for UK Sci-Fi media magazine SFX is conducting an online
poll for the best sci-fi movie ever. POTA is among the list of
candidates but predictably Star wars is currently winning.

Here's your chance guys - let's wipe those fracking Jedi off the map!

It does say best 'sci-fi' film. Star Wars is fantasy and shouldn't be on the list. Hmm, it does
say 'best' though. Apes might be the favorite, but pound for pound 'Brade Runna' gets higher
marks. And it's the fourth film to feature Harrison Ford and the Millenium Falcon.

Just to add....Since the weather is getting more enjoyable in some
spots, this would be a time to maybe plan up some kind of local
gatherings. Pick a gathering spot for those in a local area (announce
the gathering here on this site and where it would be)....maybe setup
a picnic or bowling night or something to get apes fans together.
That'll allow the fanbase to get an idea of how much support POTA has
and that'll eventually setup for a POTA Convention at some near future
    date! What do you think?

"Brade Runna" is a technical masterpiece, but POTA is a far superior
    work, in all aspects.

Since SFX have not defined the criteria for 'best' then I will assume
    they mean the most beloved.
Planet of The Apes, therefore has my vote.

Not for technical reasons, or quality of special effects, or calibre
of cast and crew. Although arguably still the best in many of these
    arenas.

Planet of the Apes, for moi, is the one that tops this category.

And I sorted out the technical problems that prevented my voting.
It was a faulty Flux capacitor.
    Vote cast.

Everyone has their own idea of what's best, from film in the apes series, to sf series on TV to Superbowl. Its a silly thing to vote for. And since Britishers voted Homer Simpson greatest American, well phooey on anything they poll.

Serenity/Firefly is proof positive that TV studios are run by malevolent aliens.  Any rational human being would have recognised a good thing and kept the series going into a second season.

That and the success of the Serenity film should have sent them scurrying for their cheque books (and the huge upswell of support and petition from fans for a second season) I think it will go down in popular culture history as the dumbest business decision ever made by a tv network.

I'm a Firefly/Serenity fan. And I refuse to vote because calling anything the BEST is ridiculous. Everyone has their own idea of what's best, from film in the apes series, to sf series on TV to Superbowl. Its a silly thing to vote for. And since Britishers voted Homer Simpson greatest American, well phooey on anything they poll.

A True Firefly/Serenity story. When the show first aired on FOX (who screwed it up) I hated it. I wouldn't even watch the repeats on SFC. Then I rented Serenity and really enjoyed it, so on a whim I bought Firefly the series and with the exception of one episode, really enjoyed it. So any problems with it can be safely laid at the feet of FOX.

Sorry to be so terribly off POTA topic

But they did screw it up - the pilot was not the pilot - they went with Train Robbery instead as the pilot cos Fox wanted more of an action orietnated pilot.

Longtime English PR readers may want to know that the English language
edition's longtime managing editor Forrest J Ackerman, who is now 90
years old, sustained a fall at his home last month which required hip
replacement surgery. Forry is currently in a rehab facility having
physical therapy in an attempt to get back on his feet. At 90 years of
age this is a very difficult and painful process, however it's
essential if he's to get back home and Forry is pursuing it as
vigorously as his energy levels will allow. As he is in considerable
discomfort, he is on a regimen of painkillers which means he is
alternately lucid and groggy throughout the day.

This is a difficult period for Forry but as always his closest friends
are keeping careful watch over him and visiting him daily to keep up
his spirits. What would really cheer him up are get well cards,
messages of support, even the occasional box of chocolates or candies!
Anyone who would like to is welcome to send messages, cards or gifts to:

    Forrest J Ackerman
    4511 Russell Avenue
    Hollywood CA 90027

and Forry's best buddy Joe Moe will ensure they are personally
delivered to Forry each day at the hospital.

    .html

From the Mort Abrahams interview in Simian Scrolls...

One evening, Arthur and I were having dinner just after the release of the film and we ran into Sammy Davis Jr - who rushed over to us and said, "You guys are the best! That film is the greatest explanation of the relationship between Blacks and Whites that I have everseen." I must say that I was quite taken a back - but he'd looked at it through a different eye.

A lot of groups could relate to the idea of being subjugated and oppressed.  The treatment of humans in the first film, and apes in the origins of it all sections of the later films would have had a lot of association for african americans, jews and pretty much anyone who felt they had suffered oppression.

Another reason why the POTA phenomena is greater than the sum of its parts.

We're happy to consider Fan Fiction as long as it's short,(around
2,500 words) and well-written. Anything longer will find a very
welcome home in the fan-fiction files of this very group.

Contributions can be sent to <simianscrolls@...>

    Thanks,

    The Apes have taken over!

Taken over the cover of issue 233 of Marvel UKs The Mighty World of Marvel, that is. After two issues of sharing the cover with the Hulk, the apes have this week's cover all to themselves. Inside is another chapter of the Battle adaptation, plus a 2-page letter column.

Also this week, issue 5 of Simian Scrolls, a Battle for the Planet of the Apes Special, is now available to download. Thanks to John Roche and Dave Ballard and all the contributors to this issue.

    Thanks,
    Greg

I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the Simian Arms website. If not check it out it is a great POTA site.

The creator of that site, Mark Gonzalez, is also a stand up comic and needs our help. Mark is competing in an online comedy contest at a website called famecast.com. This competition started in January with 100 comics from across the country and has gone threw several elimination rounds. Mark is now in the top 25 comics in the competition. Voting for the top 10 began this week and ends Saturday. So needless to say we are trying to drum up support Mark. He's doing pretty well in the voting but we would like to see if we can round up a few more people to vote for him.

Here is the link to the website/contest video.

All you have to do is go to the famecast website and register. They need a valid email address and come up with an alias/screen name. If you include the word ape in your name Mark can keep track of who registered from the group.

If you want to know more about Mark and his comedy go to: www.markgonzalezcomedy.com

    Thanks.
