put it another way, one quarter of the top 20 sci fi films in 1978 were

And will the Apes push back against the rampaging Hulk and regain their cover status? Come back next week and find out, True Believers! Thanks, Greg <.html

Logans_Run@yahoogroups.com
Www.Megomuseum.com is proud to unveil it's latest discovery, Logan 5 from the TV series "Logan's Run".
This never before seen figure has a likeness based on the star of the 1977 series Gregory Harrison. Mego planned to produce a range of Logan's Run toys but CBS Television abruptly canceled the series before 1978 Toy Fair thus forcing Mego to cancel the toy line.
With less than a handful of samples produced, few of these items have survived. In previous years samples of supporting characters such as villain Francis 7 and Robotic sidekick REM were finally found but until now samples of the show's namesake character had eluded collectors.
Today, Mego collectors can finally get a glimpse of what might have been with the Mego Logan Five prototype.

Also if you only take into consideration the first 2 movies, they never
really tell you what year TAYLOR and BRENT would've originally traveled

According to www.thedigitalbits.com , DVD was
introduced to the U.S. 10 years ago tomorrow (March 24, 1997). It had already
been introduced in Japan the previous November and some machines had already
arrived. But 3/24/97 was the arrival of movies (from Warner Bros., the biggest
early booster) and test marketing and is as good as any marker. I didn't partake
until 2000 and, yes, my first DVDs were the POTA Collection.
Of course, everyone has their own ideas
about how DVD has impacted their life. For me it's just incredible the industry
that has rose creating extras. The documentaries, the interviews that are being
done specifically for the DVD market are priceless. Photos, designs, deleted
scenes, all this stuff we lament the lack of for the original "Apes" stuff is
now being archived and preserved, and we don't have to trust a studio to watch
over it.
Another cool thing is the ability to collect
complete runs of TV shows. Fox was a pioneer of this and I believe POTA was one
of the first TV shows to be complete on DVD.
In any case, maybe watch your favorite DVD
or whatever to celebrate. The mind boggles what's coming in the next 10.

John, Scrolls.
It's one of Goldsmith's top ten scores, maybe top five even. It's a grand score with a nice love theme, one of his best main title cues, and his usual good action and Asian flavored music. I highly recommend getting the CD if you really like Goldsmith. You can listen to some samples from a re-recording of the score Goldsmith did a decade ago: http://www.amazon.com/Sand-Pebbles-Original-Picture-Re-recording/dp/B00000150T/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0797824-2382301?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1174744464&sr=1-1

It was the summer of 2002 when I bought my first DVD recorder/player...and my first choice of DVD's as well were the first box set of all five APES movies, including the BEHIND THE POTA disc that was included...I also purchased the TV series that also was out at the time. I love the DVD format, you can go straight to the desired part just by the press of a button. The digital format rules! But 3/24/97 was the arrival of movies (from Warner Bros., the biggest early booster) and test marketing and is as good as any marker. Of course, everyone has their own ideas about how DVD has impacted their life. For me it's just incredible the industry that has rose creating extras. The documentaries, the interviews that are being done specifically for the DVD market are priceless. Photos, designs, deleted scenes, all this stuff we lament the lack of for the original "Apes" stuff is now being archived and preserved, and we don't have to trust a studio to watch over it. Another cool thing is the ability to collect complete runs of TV shows. Fox was a pioneer of this and I believe POTA was one of the first TV shows to be complete on DVD. In any case, maybe watch your favorite DVD or whatever to celebrate. The mind boggles what's coming in the next 10. Jeff

It's the end of Goldsmith's "The Search (Continues)" cue from PLANET. Even though I liked its use back when I was a kid -- I think it helped make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up at that moment when I first saw CONQUEST --, I don't like that it's used now. They should have called Tom Scott back in to write something original. I'll bet that Goldsmith didn't like it being used either.

No it is not. There are many different explainations to what ANSA is
and what the anagram stands for. Some say it is America National Space
Agency.
I personally like the notion that it is a under NASA and the letters
stand for Advanced Nuclear Stellar Acceleration project. <.html

Wow, someone truly put a great deal of work into
that dossier :-) Good, good job :-)
And honestly, I could find only one notable fault
with it, that of the starship's engine being capable
of achieving the .85 of the speed of light.
The problem is, from a scientific standpoint, is
that .85 of the speed of light will not result in
what we see happening in the the POTA movie.
At .85 of the speed of light, relativistic effects
are only at 50%. That is, for every hour of flight,
only two hours will pass by on Earth. As such, for
2,000 years to pass on Earth, the ship would have to
be traveling for 1,000 years.
To see the effects we see in POTA, the ship would
have to be moving much closer to .99C - close to the
speed of light, but not surpassing it, of course.
At .85C, time is dilated by 50%. Shipboard time
is thusly half of normal in passing.
At .85C, the mass of the ship will double to 200%
At .85C, the apparent length of the ship, an effect
called 'relativistic' foreshortening, will make the ob-
served ship, if 100 feet long, to look as if 'squished'
to only 50 feet long, in its direction of travel.
At .85C, since the mass of the ship double, its own
gravitational influence will double, as if the ship were
an object twice as big as it really is.
Relativistic are inportant to consider, because it
alone seems to be the prime cause of ship-time pasing
slowly, as 2,000 years pass in real-time. A speed of
.85 see cannot accomplish that effect. Einstein says
so as his theories have proven to be true in that very
matter.
The only way the effect observed can be greater than
what .85C can account for, is if the drive did 'something
more' than allow for near light-speed velocities, and as
faer as i know, the drive has never been described as be-
ing able to do that 'something more'.
As an oversight and typo, a correction to the PDF file's
text is a simple one, and something that should seriously
be considered. It can be said that the drive was designed
to achieve .999999C, while actualy applied performance can
be just slightly below that, as is often the case with real
life devices that fall a bit short of expectations. In this
case, a decimal place or two can be dropped, with the drive's
actual use over time, as drive efficiency will drop some, as
with all machines as normally used.
Just my two cents, and a suggestion, because most good
sci-fi fans tend to notice such things, as they often know
well of how real science applies. So, it's a simple fix,
to the only fault in the work of the dossier, that I can
see.
Thanx for reading :-)

her work at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve sparked the world's

her approach..."

"She seemed unaware of the flock of followers she herself had

We related your observations to Professor Victoria Hasslein of NASA's
Theoretical Propulsion, R&D Dept. (She declined to comment when we
enquired if she was a relation). She told us that:
"The Nuclear Fusion Drive was, on paper, designed to achieve .85 of
the speed of light. Initial tests (within our Solar system) gave no
indication that it was ever capable of anything greater, and so, the
figure stated in the report would, at the time of its preparation,
been believed to have been correct.
One must allow that the dossier was assembled in a time of great
anxiety and confusion. When very little was actually known and most
was only being guessed at. Even now, forty-odd years later, much of
its contents are still a matter of conjecture. However, we believe
that the Taylor mission, far from falling short of expectations, MAY
have surpassed them!
Why are we so uncertain? Because the notorious ANSA program was
suspended. But, after decades of investigation into what hard facts
remain we believe that 'something more' did indeed occur to compound
the temporal anomalies recorded in the flight logs.
The properties of what was then commonly referred to as a 'Hasslien
Curve', (these days better known as a black hole) are theoretical
only and until such time as the ANSA program, or something similar,
is resurrected, will remain just that. The only thing we can state
with any certainty is that some external force - and one that was
totally independent of the Nuclear Fusion Drive - appears to have had
a measurable effect on the outcome of the mission.
Space is vast unknown. In the face of it what we think we know as
absolute truth amounts to naught. The only certainty is that in the
great expanse of the unexplored we can predict and count on very little.
If the ANSA program taught us anything, it taught us that our first
steps beyond our solar system must be taken with great humility. If we
swagger into the unknown with the arrogance of believing we
understand exactly how it works, then something, never before
encountered, is always 'just around the nebula'. 'Something' is
always out there, ready and waiting with infinite patience to prove
to us, in an often harsh and brutal fashion, that we truly know
nothing at all."

The "You" is kind of muffled, probably because Taylor was (supposed to be)
coughing blood.
And to throw in another examples of misheard dialogue (back to the
misheard/misunderstood thread):
Brent: "We came through a defect- a slippage in time". Took me years
to figure that out- I always thought he was saying "sipphage" (not even a real
word) that was a variation of sieve. Probably had some Star Trek jargon floating
around in my head about a rip in the fabric of the space/time
continuim.

|
.html Hi there,
Just read/looked at the Briefing Dossier.
Well made and well done to those responsible for making it.
Now some questions/comments, I assume the people responsible did
research for this dossier because:
1) ANSA = Advanced Nuclear Stellar Acceleration, but to my knowledge
doesn't ANSA stand for American National Space Administration.
2)September 13th 1973, this date is debatable my research gives the
date December 26th 1973, for splashdown, as the December date is
closer to the movie timeline.
3) Maddox's Given name of Andrew, where did it come from?
4) Isn't Maddox a Colonel not a Captain. (I could be wrong)
5) Isn't Landon a Lieutenant not a Captain.
6) Dodge and Stewart are Doctors, where did the information come
from?
7) It stated that 1965 is the year that ANSA began, but this doesn't
make sense, wouldn't 1969 be more acceptable, especially after the
moon landing and not before to consider interstellar colonization, I
mean, let's see if we can get to the moon first, before going beyond
the solar system, right? and besides why didn't NASA use the Nuclear
Fusion Drive to go to the moon?
Regards.

Yes, it's common knowledge that Paul Williams
is a Hit songwriter. Not sure how you could
confuse him with Bud Cort. One is skinny
and the other short and dumpy, not to
mention blond, and sound nothing
alike. It's a bit of a stretch.

There is no definition for ANSA given in any of the films (or scripts). Rather than borrow (or plagerize) someone else's definition; an original definition for ANSA was used.
In Escape, the President mentions NASA. So NASA exists in the POTA universe. Thus, it is not an unreasonable assumption that ANSA was a project under the authority of NASA.
> > 2)September 13th 1973, this date is debatable my research gives the > date December 26th 1973, for splashdown, as the December date is > closer to the movie timeline.
True the date is debatable. In Planet Taylor establishes that his mission was launched in January of 1972. In Escape the President stated that Taylor's ship was missing for 2 years. It can be assumed he was generalizing because the year is established as 1973, not 1974. Thus, placing the splashdown of the Ape-O-nauts in Spring or Summer of 1973 would be too early in the year. Plus, since Armando's Circus is getting ready to move to their Winter quarters means it is late in the year. But how late?
During the final meeting of the Presidential Commision, the Chairman states that the year is still 1973. If you use the 12/26 date, that would mean everything that happened in the film up to that point took place in less than 4 days. That doesn't make any sense. Zira's pregnancy isn't even showing in the early parts of the film.
Therefore, fall seemed to be the most logical time to place the Ape-O-nauts splashdown. That gives Zira's pregnancy time enough to come to term without making the President's 2 year remark seem unreasonable.
> > 3) Maddox's Given name of Andrew, where did it come from?
The character is given no name other than 'Skipper' in the film, credits or script. The last name of Maddox is what is on the name tag of his uniform in the film. The actor was Tod Andrews, thus his real last name was used as the character's first name.
> > 4) Isn't Maddox a Colonel not a Captain. (I could be wrong)
As with his name, no rank was given for the character. A Naval Captain is equivalent to a Colonel in the other Armed Services. And it seemed logical to make him a Naval officer since most of the early astronauts came from the Navy or Marines.
> > 5) Isn't Landon a Lieutenant not a Captain.
Again, no rank is established for the character in the film or script. He is described as being the at the top of his class. While a normal cadet is given the rank of Lieutenant upon graduation, it is not unusual for those at the top of a class to be skipped up a grade in rank. Also, many times military officers were given promotions upon being accepted into the Astronaut program. > > 6) Dodge and Stewart are Doctors, where did the information come > from?
The character of Dodge is protrayed as a dedicated scientist. It is not illogical to assume that he held a doctorate in one or more fields of science.
In the case of Stewart, Taylor's mission was of long duration so it would make sense that a medical doctor would be included in case of illness or injury of one of the crew. Taylor, Landon & Dodge can be all ruled out for filing that role.
> > 7) It stated that 1965 is the year that ANSA began, but this doesn't > make sense, wouldn't 1969 be more acceptable, especially after the > moon landing and not before to consider interstellar colonization, I > mean, let's see if we can get to the moon first, before going beyond > the solar system, right?
Project Apollo was begun by NASA in 1963 before the completion of projects Mercury and Gemini. The Space Shuttle program began long before the last of the Apollo moon landings. In those days, NASA didn't wait for the completion of one program to begin the next. Due to the need to design and test new technology needed, new projects and programs were started long before current ones had ended.
> and besides why didn't NASA use the Nuclear > Fusion Drive to go to the moon?
For the same reason Saturn rockets were not used for Project Gemini. They were still being designed and tested at the time.
> > Regards. > > Peter. > Thank you again for your comments Peter.
Our goal in creating the Dossier was to respect what was established in the films while filling in the blanks. The films themselves, and where necessary the scripts, were the primary sources. Knowledge of NASA and the space program in the '60s & '70s was a secondary source. Where there were holes, we used our own imaginations rather than borrow (or plagerize) from other sources.

Fox has also brought Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES (***, 2001, 119 mins., PG-13) to Blu Ray in a generally satisfying presentation that Burton aficionados should enjoy.
The movie has become something of a forgotten film over the years, despite strong box-office receipts, and in spite of being a hated picture among original series fans, this "Apes" is nevertheless still worth seeing. One aspect that the Blu Ray version handles better than the previous DVD is that the movie's dark cinematography is obviously far better represented in the high-definition transfer. It's easier to follow the action and appreciate the artistry of cinematographer Philippe Rousselot in the Blu Ray version, which also includes a commentary by Burton, the trailer, a 5.1 DTS HD soundtrack and bonus trailers.
Probably not a "reference quality" disc but still a substantial upgrade on the standard-definition DVD, and worth a viewing for Burton fans and aficionados of this entertaining "re-imagining."
Yikes! Three stars, "worth seeing"?!!!! What's this guy been smoking? Certainly something of a forgotten film, and to quote Dr. Zaius in the original, "and deservedly so!"

Yes but that was the splashdown date; when the Chairman stated it was
1973 the date calculated was 31/12/1973, everything before that
statement was in the year 1973, everything after was 1974.
Otherwise all other information given is acceptable, thaks again for

Somewhere from the dark recesses of my mind lodged between a repressed childhood memory and Apes Now Speak, Amigo!
> > > During the final meeting of the Presidential Commision, the Chairman > > states that the year is still 1973. > > > If you use the 12/26 date. > > Yes but that was the splashdown date; when the Chairman stated it was > 1973 the date calculated was 31/12/1973, everything before that > statement was in the year 1973, everything after was 1974.
The 12/26 date just doesn't make sense when looking at the events as presented in the film.
Day One: 12/26 - The Ape-O-nauts splashdown.
Day Two: 12/27 - Milo is killed in the Zoo, the President meets with Military and Cabinet members.
Day Three: 12/28 - The Commission of Inquiry meets for the first time.
Day Four: 12/29 - C&Z check into the hotel, go shopping and have their cocktail party.
Up to here everything is reasonable but there is only 2 days left to fit in a lot of events.
Day Five: 12/30 - Zira faints in the Museum, Hasslein gets her drunk.
Now you have to assume Hasslein immediatly flew back to Washington (a 5 hour flight) to meet with the President and play the recording.
Day Six: 12/31 - Again here you have to assume Hasslein flew right back to LA (another 5 hour flight), met with Commission in the morning and had them approve moving C&Z to the military camp. Dixon and Branton drive the right to the camp from the hotel that afternoon. Then C&Z are immediately interogated, Zira is drugged and recorded. Hasslein brings the recording back to the Commission that night, they immediately send their recommendation to the President and he immediately approves the recommendation.
Add to that on Day Five Zira's pregnancy was not showing yet she is on Day Six. So her pregnancy came to term overnight.
I'm sorry but it just doesn't make sense that all of this took place on one day. Plus if it was Christmas week why are no Christmas decorations seen anywhere. Also, why is Armando's Circus still in LA so late in the year and not yet in their winter quarters.
When you add everything up the 12/26 date just doesn't work.

It goes on to say that he hired 5 artists to create conceptual drawings

Does anyone know anything about this pitch book and this artwork? Who
the artists were? Is this artwork available anywhere (not necessarily

the artwork in the documentary, but I would love to see more...

.htmlHi James,
Here's the chronlogy of events in 1973/74 in Escape
1973]
December 26 The Astræa reappears mysteriously within nearby space.
It lands off the southern California coast, slightly north of San
Clemente and is met by mobilized United States Navy spaceflight
recovery crews.
The date is arrived at because in the movie Zira and the Chairman of
the Presidential Commission clearly state the year of 1973. But the
President also states "Yesterday, a US spacecraft splashed down off
the southern California coast. It was one of two that have been
missing in space for over two years now. To be exact, the one
commanded by Colonel Taylor..." So by putting all this information
together, the best and closest date to fit all three statements
satisfactory is the above.
The Astræa is found to be piloted by three speaking chimpanzees who
identify themselves as Doctors' Cornelius, Zira and Milo. The apes
are first taken to the nearby military air base and then to the Los
Angeles Zoo. They are met by two animal psychiatrists, Doctors'
Lewis Dixson and Stephanie Branton. (Escape)
December 27 Dr. Milo is killed by a gorilla. (Escape)
"Through an unfortunate accident, one of them was killed early this
morning, in the Los Angeles Zoo." President of the United States.
December 28 Cornelius and Zira are brought before the First
Presidential Commission and are accepted as friends of the planet
Earth. (Escape)
"I have therefore decided to convene a Presidential Commission of
Inquiry in Los Angeles, tomorrow. The two surviving apes will be
presented to the Commission..." President of the United States.
December 29 Second Presidential Commission is held in secret
session. (Escape)
"
they will not be required to appear before the Commission
tomorrow
" Bill Bonds.
Cornelius and Zira move into the Beverly Wilshire hotel. (Escape)
"
they will, however, be taken from the zoo infirmary to a hotel
"
Bill Bonds.
December 30 Zira lectures at the "Bay Area Women's Club", and goes
to the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History with Dr.
Hasslein.
"
tomorrow, Zira is to speak at the `Bay Area Women's Club', and
later, she'll accompany Dr. Hasslein to the `Museum of Natural
History'
" Newscaster.
Cornelius goes to the "fights" with Dr. Lewis Dixson.
"
meanwhile, Cornelius will attend a prizefight
" Newscaster.
Through underhanded interrogation and analysis of the Astræa, Dr.
Hasslein gets Zira drunk and learns of the ultimate fate of the
human race and the planet.
Dr. Hasslein convinces the President that the apes are a threat to
Mankind, and orders another Presidential Commission.
That evening, the Third Presidential Commission held is secret
session. (Escape)
"
the ape-onauts will in fact be escorted by Dr. Lewis Dixon to the
installation known as Camp Eleven and held there, in his care, for
interrogation by the CIA under the guidance and supervision of Dr.
Otto Hasslein
" Chairman.
December 31 The next morning Cornelius and Zira are taken to a
military base known as Camp XI for further interrogation.
Under interrogation, Cornelius and Zira reveal mankind's downfall
and Apekind's rise.
Under sodium pentothal, Zira reveals the treatment of humans at the
hands of apes.
The Fourth Presidential Commission is held in secret session.
"
the Commission unanimously recommends that the birth of the female
ape's unborn child should be prevented; and that, after its prenatal
removal, both the male and the female should humanely be rendered
incapable of bearing another
" Chairman.
That evening, in their quarters, Cornelius accidentally kills their
orderly and they escape.
Zira begins labor.
Dr. Stephanie Branton helps Cornelius and Zira by bringing them
to "Armando's Circus".
Zira gives birth to Milo. (Escape From the Planet of the Apes)
Chimpanzees have a pregnancy period of between 33-34 weeks (231-238
days) the average being 231.5 days. Thus it clearly shows that Zira
was already pregnant before she, Cornelius and Milo left the Earth.
"How long have you known?" Hasslein questions.
"Since before the war" Zira answers.
If the Earth was not destroyed, Milo would have been born on the 5th
of February 3979.
1974]
January 1 . Next morning Dr. Hasslein orders an intensified search
for Cornelius and Zira.
"
I want you to mount a systematic an immediate search of every zoo,
every menagerie, every circus
" Hasslein orders.
That evening, Lewis and Stephanie help Cornelius and Zira hide in
the McKinley & Son derelict shipyard. (Escape From the Planet of the
Apes)
January 2 Next morning, Dr. Hasslein discovers Cornelius and Zira
on the derelict ship, who kills Milo and fatally wounds Zira.
Cornelius seeing this shoots and kills Dr. Hasslein, who is then
shot by the police. (Escape From the Planet of the Apes)
January 31 Armando packs up his circus. (Escape From the Planet of
the Apes)
"
In a month, in just one month, we move on to our winter quarters
in Florida
" Armando informs.
Before their fateful day of Cornelius and Zira's death, Zira swaps
Milo for Salome's baby chimpanzee at Armando's circus; thus ensuring
Milo's survival under Armando's care.

Just a thought.
