Despite the frustrating lack of apes I'm still enjoying the show. I
have to confess I was a little worried after part one, I'd felt you'd
lost your way a bit but part two is much tighter and much more gratifying.
I don't know why that is, maybe it's that this instalment features
more familiar dialogue and less embellishment than previous
instalments or maybe the cast are growing more relaxed in their roles.
Taylor and Landon make a fine double act.
Of course some things are still working better than others but having
once been involved in an audio production of my own I know what you're
up against. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, and while this POTA
may never be beautiful it's a valiant attempt to at least TRY and DO
something different.
Listening between the lines all I can hear is people having fun
People expressing their love for POTA in a unique and personal manner
and perhaps that's what's been missing from APES for far too long.
Perhaps we all got old and - God forbid - SERIOUS! perhaps we should
all start having fun again.
Getting down and DOING something like this is bloody hard work. It's
endless hours, listening and re-listening, over and over and over,
until you're sick of it. Until you lose all objectivity, until your
driven almost to despair from every last soul-destroying and reluctant
compromise that has been forced upon what you were hoping to achieve.
Some elements of the audio are pretty weak, many more are excellent,
that's the reality of the amateur audio drama, it's a hobby that wears
its heart on its sleeve (I use the term `amateur' not in any
derogatory sense but in a literal sense, e.g. someone who does a thing
for love, not profit). It's ambitious, it's audacious and yes, it's
more than a little insane I suspect the producers are too, hell,
they MUST be to attempt this!
But I'm having fun with it. I'm enjoying the good, laughing with (not
at) the bad and tolerating the ugly and for around twenty minutes I
can forget all about unpaid bills, dry-rot in kitchen floors and
stupid PCs that just plain won't work.
Thanks guys.

.htmlThank you for that Dave!
The apes are coming-trust me! LOL! I made a conscious decision to follow the script pretty tight (with a few side
steps here and there) and I wanted to keep the actual story to 12-15 minute bits (that I will put together in
a longer format in the near future) to keep it manageable (I am producign 3 stories at once The Saga of the Grog
and Gryphon-Fantasy AD, and Ulysses-a sci-fi adventure that went online at brokensea today) and wanted to do my upmost to keep the quality there- and though it is not perfect I admit- I am doing my best to make it as special as I can. I am having a heck of a time making it and so is everyone involved! Also in the movie, it was slow paced setting up the initial shock of the first sighting of the apes (though I admit this is a tad slow-even for me-and I apologise for that). Hopefully when the Apes appear the auddio shock will pay tribute to the visual of the movie we all hold dear.
And as you know it's long hours worring over the right sfx, music, lines...Retakes, life getting in the way of art-etc...But it is a joy and I am honored that you listened and gave a review amigo!
It is a dream to do and an honor to hear that people are forgeting their 9-5 worrk schedules-bills- chores etc for 20minutes and just having a bit of fun. That's what it was all about to begin with! So thank you again!
Bill

Veetus would know the answer to this, but what's with this "late wife" business? When did Natalie Trundy die?

Postal Force Joins 'Star Wars'
The U.S. Postal Service plans to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars with a commemorative set of stamps featuring characters from the movie. The set, which will bear the new 41-cent first-class rate, is set to go on sale on May 25, eleven days after the postage hike takes effect. USPS Stamp Services director David Fallor told the BBC Wednesday, "We believe these stamps have the potential of reaching the blockbuster status of the [1993] Elvis stamp." Terms of the postal service's licensing deal with Lucasfilm, which owns the rights to the Star Wars characters, were not disclosed.
How about a 40th anniversary POTA US stamp of the scene of the ruined Statue of Liberty? How do we start a petition for that?

.htmlSince Apes is an Iconic series, why stop at just one stamp? I'd suggest:
1 The Statue of Liberty
2 Taylor's Ship in the Water
3 Cornelius, Zira and Baby Milo (the Escape Poster)
4 Ape Protestors from Beneath
5 Zaius and Urko
6 Ceasar standing before the Flames
7 The Lawgiver (either the statue or John Huston's portrayal)
8 Apes threatening Breck
9 Planet Poster
10 Beneath Poster
11 Escape Poster
12 Conquest Poster
13 Battle Poster
14 The Alpha/Omega Bomb
15 PLANET OF THE APES in that cool font. (anyone have this font?)
Those are just off the top of my head. Another idea could of course be great moments in SF stamps, which Apes could certainly be part of. Here's fifteen ideas just for that:
1 - Cruiser C-57D from Forbidden Planet
2 - The Statue of Liberty from Apes
3 - Klattu and Gort from Day the Earth Stood Still
4 - The Discovery from 2001
5 - The Valley Forge from Silent Running
6 - Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet
7 - The THEM! Poster
8 - Godzilla (from the original)
9 - The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
10 - A Scene from Robinson Crusoe on Mars (perhaps Paul Mantee treking across the Martian Landscape?)
11 - A Martian War Machine from the 1953 WOTW (and the only one I acknowledge)
12 - The Ark from When Worlds Collide
13 - The Luna from Destination Moon
14 - A pod from Invasion of the Body Snatchers
15 - A Xenomorph from It Came From Outer Space
Again, these are just right off the top of my head, but it is a complete sheet of stamps.

|
.html I just started watching the cartoon series "Return to the POTA" which
came out in stores a few months back, but have no idea why there is a
mixup with the original order!
On disc#1 menu screen it shows (The Unearthly Prophecy) being the
(3rd) episode after #1-"Flames of Doom", #2-"Escape from Ape City",
even the coming attration after episode #2 "Escape from Ape City"
Shows scenes of the next episode being (The Unearthly Prophecy), so
anyone watching the dvd is going to view it in this order... The
thing is if you look on the back of the dvd case you see that (The
Unearthly Prophecy) is listed 5th, not 3rd! It shows the airdate
being 10/4/75. I just thought the back cover was incorrect,
especially since it also list two episodes "Mission of Mercy"
and "Invasion of the Underowellers" with the same air date 11/1/75.
The confusion I have is that the book (POTA Revisited) agrees with
the back of the dvd case, it lists "Lagoon of Peril" as the 3rd
episode! I can't see how the dvd could be incorrect
after seeing the coming attractions showing the order goes with what
is listed on the dvd itself!! Thanks to anyone that can help with
this mixup.

.htmlThanks for the answer to my question, I guess that would be the only
answer there could be, don't understand why the network didn't just
run the intended order instead. That brings up another question...
Since NBC had the series did that mean CBS didn't own the rights of
POTA anymore and could have done a live-action series which CBS let
go of a year earlier???
There has been talk in books and interviews over the last few years
that say if CBS only moved the day/timeslot, the POTA series might
have had a good run. The friday time slot against "Chico & The Man,
& "Sanford & Son" was the toughest lineup to face in 1974. NBC would
have looked smarter than CBS if they re-tooled the show a bit, maybe
with more episodes like "The Legacy" and had a easier time slot.
That's if NBC did now own the rights by 1975/76 or could have. Anyone
know if this was ever looked into??

.html It was a good weekend, not everything went to plan but that's just the
nature of the beast.
The advertised Wagon was a no-show, apparantly plans to transport it
were aborted when it became clear that trying to move the thing was
going to result in damage. As a last minute replacement a
(well-attended) Q&A seesion with Linda and Buck was quickly arranged
and was hosted by UK actor / comedian Shane Ritchie.
Buck and Linda were both very generous with thier time and made us all
feel welcome. We introduced ourselves on the Saturday and presented
them both with thier Simian Scrolls 'Goody bags' which went down very
well. Quite literally in Mrs Kartalian's case as the chocolate bar
included in the gift was half-eaten five minutes later!
Highlight for John was Linda recognizing him and calling him by name
on the second day - a moment somewhat soured when after donning
gorilla make up she still recognized him!
Highlight for me was Buck getting out of his seat and rushing over to
greet me on the second day like I was a long-lost son! Like the Matrix
Buck cannot be described, you just have to experience him.
The unsung hero of course was Les Hemstock. A genuinely nice guy who
just wanted to share his passion with everyone. Every visitor to his
stand was greeted with a smile and given hands-on access to anything
they wanted to touch (except Les himself, but then again I never
asked!). I don't think any of us could quite believe we were being
allowed to handle and play with a genuine 'hero' rifle (bloody heavy!)
It was a terrific weekend made all the better by getting to meet and
chat with other fans. I've been a fan of apes for almost forty years
and those two days were the closest I've ever felt to it.

Bill Blake and Paula Crist have both confirmed that Roddenberry's
re-tooling of APES would have somehow involved the characters of Zira
and Cornelius. Rather than re-imagine* the TV show, Fox execs voted to
scrap it instead.

The Jedi, Browncoats and Replicants won this round but 4th place is
pretty respectful.
"Move over Star Wars, Alien and Blade Runner, there's a new kid on the
science fiction block. A long-established hierarchy of classic SF
movies has been shattered by a new pretender: Joss Whedon's Serenity
is your new favourite film.
Whedon's spin-off from the prematurely axed Firefly was the resounding
winner in our recent online poll, picking up an Earth-shattering 61%
of the vote. Second-placed Star Wars (the perennial champion of"best
ever" SF lists) grabbed 28%.
It's a remarkable performance from a movie that, less than two years
since its original 2005 release, has already forced its way into the
company of the all-time greats. Here at SFX Towers, we're surprised
but delighted Whedon's universe is one of the finest science fiction
creations of the last decade, and it's great to see that even five
years after the original series was cancelled, Firefly lives on."
Here's the full top ten:
1. Serenity
2. Star Wars
3. Blade Runner
4. Planet of the Apes
5. The Matrix
6. Alien
7. Forbidden Planet
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey

viewed anywhere, and why his work was not used at all for the series? <.html

This flashes more than once. Does anybody have an image of this? Has anybody else caught this?

Although I suppose in the second pic you can see what looks kind of like a face.. but I think that is probably pure coincidence.

Yeah, according to Bill Blake, he and Paula
auditioned for Roddenberry in his living room for the roles of Cornelius and
Zira. I've seen Bill's letter of recommendation from Roddenberry. I remember a
Roddenberry quote where he said in the '70's all they want is POTA. (I don't
remember the exact quote but he was frustrated in his efforts to do a new SF
series ). Jeff

Bill Blake and Paula
Crist have both confirmed that Roddenberry' s re-tooling of APES would
have somehow involved the characters of Zira and Cornelius. Rather than
re-imagine* the TV show, Fox execs voted to scrap it
instead.

Interesting...my order would be different, but I'd have almost all of
those same films in my top-ten as well. The differences -- I'd swap
Star Wars out for The Empire Strikes Back, and I'd swap The Matrix
out for Time After Time. <.html

For those who just aren't feeling the love for Jason, Alexander and the gang (you know who you are), we have some extra treats this week. First we have three articles from Famous Monsters magazine. Issue 80 has an article on Beneath, issue 103 has a tribute to Arthur P. Jacobs and issue 108 has an article on Battle. Thanks to Chris Lawless for lending me copies of these issues from his collection so I could scan them. Also now available is the Conquest pressbook, scanned by James Aquila. Greg <.html

.html I suppose I remembered it from my childhood being much
more distinct, so perhaps it is just a
coincidence/Rorschach phenomenon. But, the features of
an open-mouthed ape are there, and the fact that it's
virtually centered in the frame lends some weight to
the possibility. It's not hard to imagine a sly art
director attempting to inject some subtle
foreshadowing. Anyhow - here it is in negative form as well.

Which is too bad because he did some good stand alone stuff; Genesis II which was about a scientist placed in suspended animation who wakes after a nuclear war. There are two societies; Pax (good guys) and Terrania (evil mutants and slave holders). This was really dark and ended with Dylan Hunt (reused name for Andromeda) wiping out Terrania with a nuke they were planning to use on Pax. It was redone as Planet Earth, which was more light hearted, less violent and had proto-new Klingons in the form of the Kreeg. The Questor Tapes was about an android one of a line put here by aliens to guide us to a better way of life. Specter was a pretty grim horror story (supposedly the European cut is more graphic). The one thing about Roddenberry is that he was a one trick poney; his ideas of Utopia and peace were his only ideas. I think that's one of the things that has worn down viewers with Star Trek. In today's world, with all the problems, can one really buy that message? Do we
look like we're remotely on the way to world peace?

Not me.
Back To The Future would not make my Top 10.
And The Day The Earth Stood Still definitely would,
Not to mention the original Time Machine. I would
also include Journey To The Center Of The Earth,
even though the Sci in that Sci-fi consists of Geology.
