.htmlWhile I can appreciate Rich's "Hasslein Curve", it is a fan piece based
on pieced together information. And, my own speculation(s) are pieced
together too, so they are subject to the same scrutiny.
That said, I'd still say that Virdon is indeed from Texas. I make my
claim based on the information I mentioned earlier (that being that
there is a Jackson County in Texas, it is a heavily agricultural area
and Virdon is/was a farm boy, plus LordT's added information that
Jackson County is near Johnson Space Center.)
While it is said that Chris was born/raised in Houston and it is never
specified that Alan was, there is no proof to that contrary either. He
could have easily been one of the millions of folks that never move
from their home state. My guess is that Alan is a native Texan.
In the final analysis, it will be up to you to decide. You have two
different ideas, and hopefully you will choose the one that you most
agree with.

.htmlHi Aboro,
I think I have to agree.
How does this sound?
Virdon was born in Jackson County, Texas.
After Virdon married, he and Sally moved back to Virdon's family
home, so he could continue his training at the Johnson Space Centre.
Thus this would explain Chris being born in Texas and learning from
his father about farming.
My original idea/information is/was as follows:
Virdon's birthplace of Jackson County is stated in the episode "The
Good Seeds", but of course which one? There are 23 Jackson County's
in America, including one in Texas. So I have chosen Jackson County
Ohio, because it is the nearest Jackson County to Ron Harper's real
birthplace of Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. Thus Virdon moved to Texas
to continue his training/studies at the Johnson Space center.
What do you think?
Regards.
Peter.

If we ran the film during "off hours" (i.e. 10 AM or 11:30 PM) there would
be no charge for running the film itself, only a minimum ticket buy of 50 @
$6.75 each. If we ran it at a different time, there's a $500 charge since they'd
be scrapping a showing of another film. We'd obviously have to decide how many
films we wanted to do (I'd AT LEAST want to see PLANET and BENEATH), and
maybe strike a package deal with the theater. If we were to run all five, we'd
definitely want to get the public involved in buying tickets as well so we could
cover the costs of running the films. We could sell the ticket at a higher
price, giving the theater the $6.75 per and putting the difference towards the
cost of running the films.
More than likely we'd be watching a DVD projection, because there's
additional (usually, cost prohibitive) fees involved in getting a 35mm print-
not the mention the additional projectionist fees. They have a
state-of-the-art DVD projector though, so we'd get a good picture. Granted,
nothing is going to be quite like 35 mm, but in cases like this we'll have to
make compromises.
So, this isn't out of the realm of possibilities. How's everyone feel about
coming to upstate New York for a convention someday? :-)

A great idea, but what is the cost of licensing for what would be in
effect a public screening? <.html <.html

I think the original poster was referring to the "public exhibition
prohibited" FBI warning at the beginning of all discs. Projecting the
DVD for a public viewing would be illegal, strictly according to the
law. Do show it publicly, you'd have to arrange something with Fox to
keep it all above-board.

35mm is better than DVD projection, but how could you be certain that the 35mm print you got was a decent one? Better to go with the DVD, but then, how good, really, is the projection?

Obviously this would all be covered with the theater management were we to

that base has already been covered.

Here: http://www.spectrum8.com/ in Albany.
There's a good amount of lodging nearby, and I believe both hotels can

Some friends of mine saw PLANET and BENEATH once in a theatre in
California, and there were entire scenes missing. If this were to go forward,
I'd definitely go to see a demonstration of the DVD projection before
committing.
>>Awesome idea, I would want to see all five! <<
That'd be the best case scenario, and I think most people- if given the
choice- would want the option of seeing all five films marathon style in a
theater. I certainly would.

Mendez does the most of the five of them, but outside of the interrogation
chamber there's a lot more DPC then there is Caspay. From what you do
see though, Caspay seems to be Mendez's right hand man.
Victor Buono's character really doesn't say that much during the
interrogation- disproportionately so in contrast to the other four. I've always
wondered if more of his dialog was lost during the editing process.

I am very much enjoying your adaptation of Planet of the Apes. I noticed Dave Ballard's name in the first episode and am guessing that that is the same Dave Ballard who created the POTA TV-show-based "Values" audio. If so, well done! I enjoyed it very much, but the mp3 version available out there has quite a lot of noise in it. Is there any way of getting a copy of the original uncompressed version? Otherwise, perhaps it could be re-encoded into mp3 using the process you're using for your adaptation (which sounds excellent) and hosted on your site? I think it would make an excellent addition and would love the chance for a higher-quality version!
Either way, thanks for the great work!

This poster was released at the same time the color 1-sheet for BENEATH in
1970, before the double billing poster. It's currently for sale on eBay and will
probably fetch a big price by the time the auction is over.

A pic of the double header poster is on the group website: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/Beneath.htm
It's official title isn't the "double header" poster! It's the "Two APES for the price of one" poster!

Yeah, when I went to the PLANET/BENEATH double feature in Upstate New York, the theatre had a large PLANET poster (40x60) with a small BENEATH poster (Half sheet) glued to it. I never saw the "Two APES for the price of one" poster until a couple of years later when I sent for a catalog from a place in Philadelphia called "The Cinema Attic" that sold posters, still and pressbooks, and I ordered the pressbook to the PLANET/BENEATH combo and saw the picture of the poster.

Tim
I saw them in October of 1971, but I think it might have been released a little earlier, as the town I was living in was way upstate in New York and usually got movies late.
I believe the number on the bottom corner of the PLANET/BENEATH poster is higher than the one on the ESCAPE poster. The National Screen Service numbered those posters as they were released during the year, so a higher number means a later release. I think that what happened was that Fox was very pleased with the money ESCAPE made and quickly decided to re-release the first two movies and milk them for some more $$.

.html .html.htmlI've forgotten to mention this before, but a segment of CBS This Morning today reminded me of it. The segment was about the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 "Summer of Love" in San Francisco, but for me the summer of 1967 was "The Summer of Apes," specifically the period between May 21st to August 10th, during which PLANET was in principal photography.
So, we're in a very important anniversary period this year. If I had my copy of Heston's journal I'd chime in every few days with quotes from what was being filmed on this day or that until August 10th, but I don't have the book handy right now. Anyone else want to do it?

I've got to be honest with you (and this is all hypothetical since
realistically I wouldn't be there anyway) but I'd rather watch a beat-up
35mm print than a clean DVD. No matter how good the projector and how good
the DVD, seeing a DVD projected just doesn't compare to seeing a proper
print.
What I'd really like to see is for Fox to get all five films into new
digital projection format. It's cheaper to produce, it makes them available
to more cinemas easily, and it looks absolutely STUNNING. I've only seen a
handful of films digitally projected so far - Casablanca, Dirty Dancing
(yes, seriously), The Lives of Others, and The Edge of the World - but they
all looked incredible. That's what I want to see.
Of course, I know that realistically that's not going to happen, but I can
dream. I guess we'll probably see the original movie in digital format one
day since it is a classic, but I suppose the sequels too would be asking a
bit much.

.html It's just been brought to my attention that here in the UK there are yet
another couple of POTA re-releases on DVD this month. But strange doesn't
even begin to describe one of them.
Firstly, there is the double-bill pairing of the original with the remake.
This in itself is rather odd since I can't think of a more effective way of
proving what an unadulterated turd of a movie the remake is than including
it in a package with the untouchable original.
But the weirdest is yet to come. A triple bill DVD is on its way featuring
BENEATH, alongside... BATMAN: THE MOVIE (1966) and one of the early 90s
INCREDIBLE HULK made-for-TV movies. What on Earth is the reasoning behind
this one?!?
I look forward to the inevitable triple bill release of CONQUEST OF THE
PLANET OF THE APES, BABE: PIG IN THE CITY and BREAKDANCE 2: ELECTRIC
BOOGALOO.

After a lot of hard work It IS a nice kit that is now discontinued,
which is probably why the price is climbing. Remember, it's THREE full
figures, not just the one.
Downside was 1) The amount of clean up required, which was higher than
I would have expected for original castings. 2) The figures are all
virtually identical (and mostly white), which made painting them up a
bit tiresome.

You're right there.
All HD is, is an attempt to bring
video up to film quality, and it isn't there yet.
No matter how high the resolution is, it's not
going to compete with the millions of particles
of silver halide on a frame of film. It's not possible.
Until they can do that, it only ever going to be close.
Close, but no cigar.
