You're welcome. It seems a few people here already own this great-looking, if somewhat difficult to build and expensive to buy kit.

Hey Bruce,

Yep, I built it. I'm just off to bed but I'll take a few pix for you
tomorrow. In the meantime here's a link to the kit maker's website
that shows all three figures. My version isn't a lot different.

I'm happy to go collective with Dave on photos of my kit. It's pretty much
made with a little bit of paint and I still have the box.

Subject: graded Megos
.html
The new issue of Toyfare has a price list of "graded"
Megos'...not sure how that works....do you have to
send your megos to someone to grade them? anyway, it
has this blurb at the beginning

"While the World's Greatest Superheroes and Star Trek
figures get most of the attention with Mego
collectors, just about anything that Mego put out is
seriously collectible. The Planet of the Apes line,
for example, often out-prices many of the WGSH
figures, and when they're graded, they're even more
valuable. While an 85 graded Hulk sells for around
$375, a Dr. Zaius graded at just 80 sells for $400. A
planet where apes are worth more than men? MADNESS!"

Astronaut Graded 85 611.00
Cornelius Graded 86 510.00
Zaius Graded 85 710.00
Burke Graded 90 256.00
Soldier Ape Graded 85 1,275.00 !!!
Zira Graded 85 710.00

Damn! no word on Virdon , Urko or Ursus ....Ursus
usually being the highest price regularly.....

Tim

Subject: ESCAPE = MASTERPIECE... what's about the make-up?
.html
I've just rewatched 'Escape From The Planet Of The Apes' TWICE (in a
matter of a month, of course); it had been a very long time since
I've watched this classic (I was just 17 years old --- good ol'
days). It was always my least favourite among the POTA movies... now
I'm much more wiser, and found it TOTALLY COMPELLING. Yes, I was
wrong, so wrong. The movie is a masterpiece.

The screenplay is a blast --- in less than 1:30 (running time) it
manages to explore all the possible implications of the Ape-O-Nauts
in the "proper" way.
The direction is virtually flawless, despite the low budget.
Roddy's performance was great as always.
I actually realized that DIXON is supposed to be Taylor's
counterpart! He's so cool! The actor did a terrific job with the
character. OTTO HASSLEIN (Eric) is one of the most intruiguing
villains who ever graced the big screen.

My only SLIGHT disappointment was the make-up. IT is GOOD, but maybe
Don Taylor used the wrong cinematography, because the make-up didn't
look as GOOD as in the previous films or even the pair
CONQUEST/BATTLE. What do you think about it? Any suggestions?
Cornelius's face looks GREY in some shots. Also, I didn't like
Zira's make-up, even.

Next week: The final issue!

That, too, is the one thing about ESCAPE that bugs me watching it now -- that they "cheapened" the makeup.  Whereas in the original different shading of makeup were used within each face, and the lighting and camera angles were carefully chosen, and the wig pieces were of excellent quality, all that was done away with in ESCAPE, the production of which is only slightly above that of a better-than-average TV movie.  The color of the makeup on the faces is just one overall color, with only the slightest of shading, and the wig pieces aren't of the original's quality.  I especially hate what they did with Roddy McDowall's wig.  It's almost as if it isn't the same Cornelius.  They also don't bother to blend the hair unto the face as they did in the first one.

Other than that, ESCAPE is OK.  A masterpiece?  Hardly, but very clever and the best of the sequels.  It's too bad it didn't have a higher budget, but that's water long over the dam.

.html.htmlI forgot to mention that the apes look as good as they do in PLANET not just because of the quality and care taken with the makeups, but also because it was shot by Leon Shamroy, one of the greatest cinematographers EVER!  Milton Krasner, who was DP on BENEATH, was almost as good as Shamroy and it shows, but the guy who shot ESCAPE, Joseph Biroc, while having a long list of credits to his name, was no Leon Shamroy or even Milton Krasner.

Maybe because they were shooting more in "real"
locations, they couldn't (or wouldn't ) deal with
lighting it right for the makeup since there were only
two apes involved,,,in fact, you'd think with only 2
(or 3 with Milo) that they could spend MUCH more time
on make up!!!
I haven't watched Escape in a while bu t I want to

Haven't watched ESCAPE in years but that damn gorilla has got to be the worst thing I have
ever seen grace the screen. Even the various gorilla suits used in The Three Stooges
shorts were more realistic. Then again, everything I see on the Three Stooges I believe.

I seem to remember reading that John Chambers wasn't so involved by
this point...I think Dan Striepek (sp) was at the helm, now...They
were probably "stream-lining" the application by now, as well...
I always felt the PLANET had a more "earthy" look to the apes, that
BENEATH almost carried through, but the last three and the TV show
were more monochromatic, IMHO...

I agree...I always wondered why the gorilla in ESCAPE and the
orangutans in CONQUEST looked so phony...It was almost as if the
directors (or whomever) could only see the civilized apes...

I've always been boggled, as well, as to how the three orangutans got
face and body lifts while they were outfitted in clothes!...=)

Yes, I've often commented that it looks like a refugee from Gilligan's Island,
and know I know why.  I just looked the guy up on the IMDB and he WAS
the ape on Gilligan's Island, as well as Lost In Space, Star Trek and Land
Of The Giants -- not to mention Bewiched and Bikini Beach.  Actually I
wish they had used Ray "Crash" Corrigan from the 3 stooges.  But I
guess he was a little bit too old by then.  He had quit playing apes
in '53 and was died in '76, so I guess that's a bit of a stretch.

That's the guy.
Apparently when Corrigan stopped
playing Apes he found his niche.  The
problem is he insisted on using his own

for film work, unless you're going for laughs
such as the Stooges or Gilligan's Island.

While most of  Prohaska's apes were sub-standard the monster he created for the "Pickman's Model" segment of Rod Serling's Night Gallery was terrific.

Hi There,

Just tried to get into yahoo groups 'Ape_Flicks' but I can't, as
yahoo says it doesn't exist anymore, is this correct? or is it my

I had the same thing happen. Sometimes if Yahoo is servicing the server
a group is on it will disable the group for a while. Try again
tomorrow.

Thank you, Bruce and Glen. To be honest I found this kit tough going.
The white spacesuits were very difficult to shade - if you leave them
just white they look unpainted, if you shade them too much they just
look dirty. Eventually I settled for a light blue, very subtle shading
but even so, in certain lights the suits look blue!

The background was a computer generated beach shot with the nose cone
of Vin's remarkable, fully rendered Icarus dropped in. I've uploaded
the file in case anyone else can make use of it.

Peter,

Sad to say it seems that the Ape_Flicks group has been deleted. Scott's
other groups have been deleted as well. As to why, I really can't give
you an answer at this time. It is a shame because Ape_Flicks was one of
the better POTA groups.

Of course, all members of the former Ape_Flicks group are welcome as
members here.

Subject: ESCAPE = MASTERPIECE... what's about the make-up?

I certainly wouldn't class ESCAPE as a masterpiece, in fact I still think
it's my least favourite of the sequels just because of the first half. As
the only movie set in contemporary times, it's dated badly - more so than
even CONQUEST - and I still find much to shake my head about. The dodgy
gorilla costume, the fashions, the humour, the apes-as-celebrities scenes...
I could do without all of that (except for Caesar at the boxing match, which
is one of the best scenes in the film).

I've said this countless times before, but I view ESCAPE as two separate
films, split right down the middle. There's the weak first half, and the
absolutely excellent second half to make up for it. It's not like there are
two movies struggling to get screen time at the same time - it's literally a
case of splitting the movie right down the middle. In fact, I could pinpoint
the exact moment - as soon as Zira says "I'm pregnant", that's it. End of
the rather silly first half, start of the superb and somewhat serious second
half.

Subject: Foreign comics
.html
Am sending this to all three groups as to spread the
word...

I am compiling pics OF JUST THE COVERS of all Foreign
release (Non-US) POTA comics to eventually be sent to
Hunter....

I just sent him the DUTCH comics 1-9

and will be sending him 1-13 GERMAN (Planet der Affen)
issues

and of course we have the entire UK run already!!!!!!

Terry , I believe , has sent me some great scans
before and now I'm looking for more....

So I am in need of these issues....if anyone has these
or pics of them and could send me high res pics I
would be very grateful!

I'll even take scans of issues in bad shape...

I need:

DUTCH #10 (Apen Planeet)

High res of ARGENTINIAN (El Planeta de Los Simios)
comics 1-7 with proper ID viewable.....I have low
res scans and can't make out issue numbers

Any ITALIAN (Il Pianeta delle Scimmie) comics --
don't know how many issues

I have some MEXICAN (El Planeta de Los Simios) comics
but would like better scans and better issue ID I
believe there are nine issues

I have two PORTUGUESE (Planeta dos Macacos) pics No.11
and another I can't make out I believe there are five
total

any SPANISH (El Planeta de los Monos) comics....I
have 1, 4 and 5 of the "giant" collective issues but
need better scans of all regular issues as well as 2
and 3 of the giants I believe there are nine issues
in Vol. 1 and 29 issues in vol. 2.....JR, I think that
you have these!? could you scan all you have for me?
and do you know if there were any other Spanish issues
besides the Barcelona ones? Were the Lisbon issues
different?

I have SWEDISH (Apornas Planet) issues 3 & 4 from 1975
and 1-4 of 1976 so am looking for 1 & 2 from 75

I think I have all 17 AUSTRALIAN comics covered plus
the two un-numbered ones and the No. 1 reprint from
1980

and I have the FINNISH (Apinoiden Planeetta) no.1 but
believe there are three more

Does anyone know of any other country that issues POTA
comics?
Thanks for all your help in advance!

Tim

The only I remember now is the V1 and V2 Marvel ones, "El Planeta de los Monos". I have all V2 and some V1, but I hven´t a scanner at home, I can take pics with the camera. If we have time I can do the scans at work betwen the sanwich and the oranje juice :).
I buy an Portuguese comic "O Planeta dos Macacos" the cover was the famous red cover with a gorilla wrestling with the cops, the inside story was Battle adaptation. Unfortunatly I lost this, possibly was in the my brother´s collection (he collect marvel comics in general) or was missing ina action in one of our mother´s preventive wars against our evil comics. The size was A5 aprox, the spanish ones was in A4 format aprox.

I am compiling pics OF JUST THE COVERS of all Foreign
release (Non-US) POTA comics to eventually be sent to
Hunter....

I just sent him the DUTCH comics 1-9

and will be sending him 1-13 GERMAN (Planet der Affen)
issues

and of course we have the entire UK run already!!!!! !

High res of ARGENTINIAN (El Planeta de Los Simios)
comics 1-7 with proper ID viewable.... .I have low
res scans and can't make out issue numbers

This here's just one of those weird phrases that stick in my brain. In the "Return to the POTA" cartoon Judy mentions Deming, New Mexico (I don't even remember the context) and, well, it's a location I haven't come across since...until today. They announced that Deming will be used as a location for "Indiana Jones 4", doubling for Morocco (the cheapskates). I guess Judy didn't make it up. Judy, Judy, Judy.  - - - Jeff

The red one? I never saw it before until it started popping up on eBay a couple of years ago. It always goes for some ridiculous price I could never afford.

I do not have any V1, but I have seen them. They are less numbers, with more pages and they only deal with the adaptations the films, only memory to have seen those of “Planet” and I do not know if they included articles on the shooting, I think so, but not sure. Then, in Spain, it was very common to reedit such comics time and time again changing the format.

Maybe they are more in the line of the American
"Adventure" comics which just had the movie
adaptations in them.....were they they same size as
V.2 or were they comic book size? I know the Mexican
comics were two different sizes.....

V1 was the same size but more pages.
Portuguesse was comic book size or smaller.

It's here at last, the final issue in the nearly three year project to get all of the Marvel UK Planet of the Apes comics available online. This issue contains the final installment in the Future History Chronicles storyline.

Thanks to Hunter for hosting these and for putting up with my occasional nudging to get the next issue posted.

Thanks also to everyone who's posted their appreciation for our making these comics available.

Also available this week is the pressbook for Battle for the Planet of the Apes (thanks to James Aquila) and the start of a new section featuring the covers of foreign Apes comics. Thanks to Tim Parati for the Dutch and German covers that are starting things off.

Thanks,
Greg

An incredible achievement, Greg. I don't think anyone else here would
have had the stamina to have seen this project through. I know it
would have driven me insane around issue 10!

Those three years in which the comic was originally published were
among the best in my life, it was wonderful to re-capture a little of
the sense of that on a regular weekly basis.

So, how many scanner lamps did you get through?

Thanks for that.

But As a former member, why wasn't I informed by email that it was
gone?

Anyway, let's hope this group stays alive.

Greg, I still vividly remember the lazy summer's day when I realised
issue 246 was the end of my Apes fix for a long time. Your project
has been awe inspiring and has given exposure to strips and covers
that deserve to be remembered. You are now, in recognition of services
to Apedom, excused target practise and can go straight to the
lobotomy section. John, Scrolls.

Search eBay item number 8378020803

Clearly taken from BENEATH, so obviously it's Ursus. Anyone have any ideas why the two characters were/are so confused by people who licensed Apes stuff? The main one being the interchangeable Ursus/Urko Mego figures. The one with the brown face (and the helmet) always looked more like Ursus to me, and the one with the black face put me in mind of Aldo more that Urko.

Also check item number 8378020688. Wonder what makes these 'Mego' shirts?

Of course, I'm doubting that these shirts are officially licensed products...

Though technically it's not POTA, the cast of our POTA audio drama make an appearance and sing "Gorilla's Just Wanna Have Fun!" <think cyndi Lauper>. Join the fun, but you might want to download ep1 and 2 first so it will make a bit of sense-LOL

Mak, Bill, Paul, Dave and their Office Goddess, Natasha, find that their first Casual Friday Party at Gorilla Audioworks is a bit more than it seems…especially when the fabric of time somehow gets all knotted up. Our interpid audio execs' only hope to save the universe -- and the Guinness -- is to enlist the help of the Princess of the Pantheon Extrordinaire, MJ Cogburn, to help "Quantum Leap" them out of this loop of causal chaos before it's too late.

I mentioned this poster in a post a while back. I think this is the style A poster but not sure of that. Just know it's harder to come by. I like it. This is the art that they use in the British quad poster. Also a cool poster.

Yes you did. And I wondered if anyone remembered seeing that odd-looking gorilla next to Breck in any scenes in the movie.
