.htmlThe first ten had glued spines, which are very difficult to open wide
safely.Issue 11 on were stapled. One odd item is that the US version
of #25 has a different opening splash page on page 3 which is
possibly the very first published art by Marshall Rogers of Batman
fame, who very sadly died far too young recently. It's not in the UK
issue (#115).John, Scrolls.

Wow. I can't believe that made the list. Given all the really,
really bad sequels out theres, how could any of the POTA movies come
close? There are hundreds of sequels worse than that Battle--which I
happen to think is a great film. <.html

You're probably thinking, "Yeah, but some sequels are so bad they're
good!" Those aren't on this list. These movies are so absolutely bad
their badness can be measured only in Kelvin degrees. Finally, we
factored in a certain intangible stankitude a sort of je ne sais crap
that makes a film so god-awful you wish there were a cinematic Hague
where it could be tried. Until such a court is convened, however, all
we can do is offer our testimony against these 25 offenders. We hope
you have more fun reading about them than we had watching them. <.html

She-who-must-be-obeyed views my affection for APES as some kind of
good-natured fetish/affliction.
That said, although Mrs B doesn't 'get it' she's never once
discouraged my interest or questioned the time and money I've spent.
Earlier this year, at the NEC event, she was very, very supportive and
without doubt I had a better time because of her.

.htmlOf course, THEY are a bunch of ignorants who deserve nothing. Their
magazine is pathetic and deserves the trash-can. That's for sure.
'BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES' is a very compelling movie which
manages to "reprise" the FEELING and the VIBE of the first two
movies. While the excellent ESCAPE and the superb CONQUEST were
divergences (not only "fictional", but even "cinematic"), BATTLE
steams towards the strict and usual POTA visuals, adding new elements
in the mix (that Mad Max-esque factor, you know, long time before the
Mad Max series). The cinematography is great, and there's
that "twisted" and menacing groove that the early two POTA movies and
the TV series retained.
BATTLE is a marvellous action movie with some poetic touches, and
features a great screenplay and superb performances from everyone
involved.
ESCAPE is my least favourite entry out of the saga, still I consider
it as being an absolute masterpiece from every standpoint (After
rewatching the movie again last night, I must say THIS about the make-
up: it's always that same GENIUS make-up. In some scenes it is just
INCREDIBLE!
It was just my previous DVD copy which sucked. Worst video transfer
ever, and that affected the cinematography. I just watched another
DVD rendition last night, and it worked !!!!!!!!!!!!).

LOL -- True, it's not exactly big-budget...but that's never been a
criteria for my enjoyment of a film. Clerks practically WAS shot at
a local Circle K, and that movie is great. On the other hand, nearly
every Roland Emerich film was filmed on a huge budget, and nearly all
of them are embarrassingly bad. For me, the great thing about Battle
isn't how big the scope is, so much as that, like Conquest, it
captures the essence of the simian society we see in the future-era
films. Caesar, Aldo, Mandemus and Virgil are all among my favorite
characters from the series. Granted, Kolp's a little over the top,
and the guy who plays Mendez the First sometimes seems like he's
sleeping while reading his lines, but I consider Battle one of the
better sequels.

Exactly, that's what made no sense to me. Jason Takes
Manhattan? Jason X? Halloween 4, 5, 6 and 8? Any of the Amityville
Horror sequels? You could make a "worst 200 films" list with just
bad horror sequels, and Battle wouldn't be anywhere near the list.

A friend of mine feels the same way. I'll never agree, as I think
the revolution makes for an amazing film, but I do understand some of
his reasons -- the absurdly simple training they go through ("Do!")
that somehow conveys multiple meanings, for instance. Still, I love
both films.

ONE MOMENT! In order to help me develop my scenario in a better way...
In your opinion,
In the alternative timeline scenario, what's the "proper" integration
of the TV SERIES? Because I feel there's a major fault here.
I mean, we know for sure that the TV series might belong to APELINE
ONE. My doubt is the fact that VIRDON & BURKE departed from Earth
AFTER Taylor/Brent displacement in time, and they arrived on the
Planet of the Apes BEFORE Taylor/Brent. It's a terrible and dangerous
discrepancy.
I mean, maybe it's safe to assume that Virdon and Burke - and their
predecessors (those who departed from Earth in 1970 A.D. and arrived
on POTA in 3075 A.D. or so) - SLIGHTLY affected the history. They
killed people, moved some situations, interacted with the surrounding
world. Thus basically, did Taylor and Brent arrive on a Planet of the
Apes whose history had been ALREADY re-arranged by Virdon and Burke
and their predecessors somehow?
I can't believe that Virdon and Burke, or they predecessors, created
a third or a fourth Apeline or God-knows-what!
And how could this be correctly "integrated" into the double-crossed
timelines scenario? Maybe had
Taylor/Brent/Virdon&Burke/predecessors's timeline
ALREADY "accomodated" the changes in its history with no major
consequences - without originating diverged universes of some sort -
wherever Cornelius and Zira's arrival so EARLY in the timeline
changed EVERYTHING and created a brand-new diverged universe: APELINE
TWO
What do you think about it?

Because the TV series takes place on the West Coast and about 1,000 years from any of the films it really doesn't interfer with the Film series continuity. So it can be included in the film's timeline or not. It really makes no difference. > > I mean, we know for sure that the TV series might belong to APELINE > ONE. Virdon & Burke were taking a much shorter trip than Taylor. They only went to alfa centauri, which is very close to Earth. Taylor (and later Brent) were travelling to a much farther star. It makes sense that a round trip would take much less time for Virdon & Burke than for Taylor. So even though they left later, they could return sooner.

I wouldn't say re-arranged. Virdon and Burke's adventures were merely part of the history of the world that Taylor discovered.

I have to agree with you on this point Rich. Personally, I always try to
see some things for what they were originally intended to be- even if the end
result is out of all proportion to the intent. Case in point: The Starlost
series back from the 70's. A great idea, based on what Science Fiction is at
it's best (social allegory), and a team of writers that included the best and
brightest of the day. What it turned into was a low budget, chroma-key heavy
series that made shows like Dr. Who and The Tomorrow People look like they had
huge budgets. But in all three cases, each series still managed to tell
(mostly) interesting stories which allowed you to ignore the special
effects (or lack thereof). Granted, Dr. Who has a much bigger following, but
both Starlost and Tomorrow People still have cult followings. In the case of The
Starlost- a 30 year old series that's barely remembered by most- that fact that
it did make an impression on some viewers says something.
Of the five, BATTLE is my third favorite (BENEATH is the first, followed by
the original). There really are a lot of good characters there, and any films
that has characters exploring ruins is usually OK in my book. As far as Kolp
goes, I always thought that the character was written that way to accentuate the
madness that was slowly setting in. The guy who played him (Severn Darden) was
an old Second City veteran and actually quite an eccentric (and creative
individual from what I've read. I'm sure he put his own twists in
there as well.
Chris L
>>LOL -- True, it's not exactly big-budget.. .but that's never
been a criteria for my enjoyment of a film. Clerks practically WAS shot at
a local Circle K, and that movie is great. On the other hand, nearly
every Roland Emerich film was filmed on a huge budget, and nearly all of
them are embarrassingly bad. For me, the great thing about Battle isn't how
big the scope is, so much as that, like Conquest, it captures the essence of
the simian society we see in the future-era films. Caesar, Aldo, Mandemus
and Virgil are all among my favorite characters from the series. Granted,
Kolp's a little over the top, and the guy who plays Mendez the First
sometimes seems like he's sleeping while reading his lines, but I consider
Battle one of the better sequels. <<<.html <.html

Whats the story behind this fan made " Planet Of The Men"?
Is this just a trailer to a finished movie? Or does the person who made it
plan to finish it? The make up on the apes is cool, remind me of the 70's
look.
Also are there more fan made ape movies out there? With the POTA being so
popular world wide you would think more have to be out there somewhere.
heck if a fan could make that , then the Sci Fi channel or HBO can
make a cool POTA short film, or even series.

He also appeared in at least one episode of "The

I remember stumbling across his obit in a newspaper somewhere and being
frustrated that I couldn't find out more about him. Back in the ancient times of
1995 before the internet was so commonplace.
I had completely missed that bit from 'Back To School'. I saw it in the
theaters but must not have made the connection at the time.
Apparently there's a special edition DVD coming out August 14th. Be
interesting to see what kind of extras are included.

Anyone from Europe have the TV series DVD set? I'm curious if it features
the same versions as the U.S. release.

The way he describes the scene, it was exactly the same as the scene
where Galen and Virdon, except of course in the episode, it was a
gorilla whose cart was hijacked.

scene. The script had Virdon and Galen getting help from a human cart
driver, who drives them right into the City, with them hidden
underneath.I can understand why that was altered, as it gave Roddy
the chance to ham it up as 'Granny Galen'.Bill's scene was meant to
be a chimp farmer being questioned by a gorilla about the theft of
his cart. The gorilla was played by Lee Delano and there are behind
the scenes pics of Lee that don't fit the episode as seen--there's
one of him on his autograph site that suits Bill's scene--a farmyard
type setting. The transmitted scene is awful and looks like a last
minute lash up--a gorilla farmer(are there ANY gorilla farmers
anywhere else in the series?---they're all chimps) still wearing his
purple soldier pants is caught in a monumentally infantile trap. It
is just about possible that footage with Bill's character could exist-
--different versions of Doctor Who went around the world.I do believe
Bill. The best scene cut from The Interrogation is a flashback of
Burke getting military coaching in how to resist questioning--it
would have really made the title of the epoisode relevant, comparing
how Apes and Humans do these things. It would also have been very
relevant today. John, Scrolls.

.htmlI'm curious, which version of the script is that in? A lot of the
scripts went thru many drafts before being finalized. I'm not saying
the scene wasn't scripted, I am wondering though how it was all
written in the script? Are you saying the script had Galen and Virdon
steal the chimp's cart, and then they talked some human cart driver
into driving the stolen cart into the city? After all that happened,
then the chimp was questioned?
As for the gorilla farmer, who's to say there aren't more? After all,
they were originally intended to be not only the police and soldiers,
but the "heavy laborers" too. As far as the purple pants, no big deal
there either. Purple is the gorilla's primary color, just as green is
the chimp's. Saying that a gorilla farmer shouldn't be wearing purple
pants is like saying that Polar shouldn't be wearing his green pants.

.htmlThe script is on Hunter's site, I believe. In the script, our intrepid
duo never steal a cart at all, they enlist the help of a human cart
driver who enjoys his 15 minutes of rebellion. As for gorilla
farmers, personally I don't think they existed , although Kava in The
Cure may have had to consider this as a career choice in the end.The
scene, as filmed, is poor, in my humble opinion and Bill Blake has
spoken in the past about talking with make-up people on set about his
appliance and his scene with Delano.I think it should have been Bill,
as a farmer chimp, on that cart, with a follow up scene of Delano
questioning Bill about the theft. What happened to the poor gorilla
they robbed--did he just die/starve to death? The past time
interrogation scene might have been done too, given the flashback
they actually used in the episode. It's my favourite episode, but it
could have been even better--I'd have loved Effinger to novelise it.

.htmlThose results are interesting.Over two thirds had their first
exposure with Heston's movie--we must have a lot of older folk in
here? I'm 40, so I was too young to see the original run, and the
movies weren't shown on tv in the UK until, I think, 1977, so the tv
series and accompanying comics were a massive introduction for me in
the UK---I only even learned of the original movies later, through
the comics.I wonder are we an 'older'fanbase than other franchises--I
doubt if Burton's movie brought in much new blood.John, Scrolls.

I simply put some items up for auction and posted
this on only 2 of the POTA yahoogroups just to let you know for those who
"might" be interested.
I am not sure why I am criticized for doing this

Off the top of my head the only remakes I've really enjoyed
were King Kong and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Neither were as good as
the originals but were at least fun to watch.

These were great updates on the originals. (And there are plans
underway to remake both of these remakes. 8-( )

I thought it was OK, but I still much prefer "Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory."
> I didn't mind the Apes remake,
I did.
KING KONG was a great homage to the '33 version and had wonderful
special effects, but didn't really improve on the '33 version,
story-wise, IMO.
There are exceptions ("Heaven Can Wait"), but by and large, remakes do
nothing for me.

As usual I am short on time and dont always get to
read all the posts
If I knew that nobody wanted any ebay posts on here
than I wouldnt have bothered doing it
But I just had a last second thought of letting
some POTA fans know about some stuff I had leftover to sell - this isnt a
regular occurance
On another note I still would like to get APE
CHRONICLES #40 happening
The big thing I note is there is a small amount of
POTA fans (propably less than 10 people combined) who actually put together POTA
related items for the groups or fanzines or websites etc. We do it
cause we love it - surely none of us are doing it for the money LOL
But due to this I always am short on time to focus
on POTA cause I have so many things in my life happening - when the time is
right I will just get back at it and it will be fun again!

Yeah, Bill Blake and Lee Delano filmed a

sauna scene between Urko and Zauis, kinda like a poor man's "Beneath". Since
that was cut, maybe this was a replacement. I guess it got cut for time. The
astros abandon the cart at Bill's farm and Lee questions him about it. It was
filmed. Jeff

The script is on Hunter's site, I believe. In the script, our intrepid
duo never steal a cart at all, they enlist the help of a human cart
driver who enjoys his 15 minutes of rebellion. As for gorilla farmers,
personally I don't think they existed , although Kava in The Cure may have
had to consider this as a career choice in the end.The scene, as filmed,
is poor, in my humble opinion and Bill Blake has spoken in the past about
talking with make-up people on set about his appliance and his scene with
Delano.I think it should have been Bill, as a farmer chimp, on that cart,
with a follow up scene of Delano questioning Bill about the theft. What
happened to the poor gorilla they robbed--did he just die/starve to death?
The past time interrogation scene might have been done too, given the
flashback they actually used in the episode. It's my favourite episode, but
it could have been even better--I'd have loved Effinger to novelise it.

Bill Blake was also the only ape actor in
the history of the franchise to sculpt his own appliance. Stan Winston worked on
the show and was impressed by Bill's work. Jeff

Yeah, Bill Blake and Lee Delano filmed a
scene for "The Interrogation" . John Roche sent me a cut scene from the
ep, a sauna scene between Urko and Zauis, kinda like a poor man's "Beneath".
Since that was cut, maybe this was a replacement. I guess it got cut for time.
The astros abandon the cart at Bill's farm and Lee questions him about it. It
was filmed. Jeff

The script is on Hunter's site, I believe. In the script, our intrepid
duo never steal a cart at all, they enlist the help of a human cart
driver who enjoys his 15 minutes of rebellion.
What happened to the poor gorilla

.htmlWow--I never knew Stan Winston worked on the Apes show. Makes me even
sadder that his amazing test make-ups for the Burton movie didn't get
to be used, as they were beautiful. If a scene was filmes, but cut,
maybe it still exists somewhere? I'd love to see the script for that
scene--there was a LOT of good stuff cut out of The Interrogation,
which is annoying as the bits in Urko's office could easily have been
cut instead.Bill getting a residuals cheque does suggest it was shown
somewhere--unless the industry rules at the time gave him residuals
even if not transmitted? It would be great to have Bill re-create
that scene someday. John, Scrolls.
