High resolution scans of the lobby cards of all 5 films are available in the One Sheets section of the Group website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/OneSheets.htm.

Everyone is free to copy them and print out for their own collections. I would recommend using glossy photo paper.

Boy, I haven't looked at that article in over thirty years, even though I'm sure I have the TV Guide it was in packed away someplace.

The producer, Stan Hough (pronounced "Huff"), worked for 20th Century-Fox for years and was married to actress Jean Peters, a former wife of Howard Hughes.  Anyway, he was indirectly responsible for everything APES that followed the original movie, because it was Stan Hough back in '68 that first suggested to Arthur Jacobs and Mort Abrahams they do a sequel.  And that's how the whole thing started.

I find that scene artistic.

No, it's not that. It's a sequence in which CORNELIUS is walking
ahead of ZIRA (and Salomé), and at a certain point he watches the arm
of the pumpjack in awe, and a ray of light hits his face. It's some
seconds before he turns his back and hurries up Zira to move faster.

Hope my question sounds clear.

I've always loved the look of that article, even though the text, in
the end, is pretty depressing! The paintings are just wonderful---I
wonder did James Naughton have a bigger shoulder bag than the one we
see on screen, so's he could carry stuff around--the one pictured is
big enough to sleep in.Still, if that's his bag......John, Scrolls.

I knew there ratings weren't great for the series, but wow.

The Nielsen ratings for the second week of the new season had been posted, and Friday night had been cornered by NBC. Chico and the Man was the No. 1 show for the week, Sanford and Son No. 3. Apes, directly opposite, was No. 43.

I've been reading about transdimensional views of time and space and my
pitiful brain has sort of farted and died after a couple of
pages.Running on empty, as usual, I think I grasped that Albert's idea
that travelling at or near the speed of light would slow the passage of
time in your vessel, so that, back home, time would move on quicker
and, when you landed, Apes would rule. Some tests on clocks in space
have confirmed this. However, there's nothing to suggest yet that it
could work in reverse, ie, Zira, Cornelius and Milo really should have
gone forward, not back. So,with Apes, which is all that really matters
anyway, are we talking different mechanisms for the time travel--speed
of light to go forward, time warp/bend in time to go back? John,
Scrolls.

I always assumed that is was a different phenomena that, as Hasslien said, jumped the Apes from their present into ours. Something to do with the shock wave from the Alpha-Omega bomb.

TO: All People Who Care in pota

I am a private individual posting this message to
help Laboratory Animals and us all.

A new European Chemical Testing Policy called
REACH has now been finalised by the European
Union. Under these proposals 30,000 Chemicals of
every kind - from those used in industrial processes
to the ingredients of consumer products - will be
tested on Millions of animals from mice to fish to
      dogs, causing untold suffering.

Still worse, because of this reliance on outdated
animal techniques, reliable and relevant information
will not be provided and our safety will not be assured.

This is URGENT because Testing has now started.

If you believe that REACH should make more use
of Alternative Testing to test 30,000 Chemicals
that have been in general use since before 1985
      then please take action now.

If you are a European citizen please contact your
local papers and own MEP asking them to promote
the development of humane non-animal testing
methods under the REACH legislation, which is the
best hope we have for sparing animals the misery
      of a testing laboratory.

For contact details of your MEPs visit
      http://www.europarl.europa.eu

For all Non-European members, you can still help.
Please tell all your colleagues and friends in the UK
and Europe about REACH. Write to your own local
papers to try and inform others about what is going
      on in Europe.

I just opened the DVD special edition of THE SAND PEBBLES, and to my
surprise there are miniature reprints of the lobby cards inside.
Fantastic Voyage didn't have them, but Posiedon Adventure did. I wonder
what the criteria is that some fox films merit this, and some don't. I
would have much rather had lobby card reprints in the Apes reissues,
than the Caesar head. It's not mentioned anywhere on the packaging,
does anyone know of any other Fox films that have the reprints?

According to the (un)popular "alternative timeline theory":
Cornelius, Zira and Caesar might have changed the "original" timeline
depicted in the first two movies of the series (and possibly the TV
series). Thus the events narrated in ESCAPE FROM (1971), CONQUEST OF
(1972) and BATTLE FOR (1973) create a new "Planet of The Apes"
different from the one we saw in the TV SERIES (1974), the classic
      PLANET (1968) and BENEATH (1970).

Very good work T.C. Just one thing that I've had a problem with most alternate timeline theories is putting the nuclear war in the 26th centuries. Planet and Beneath clearly establish that the nuclear war took place in the 20th century. Plus we see in Conquest (Apeline Beta) that it only took a few years for Apes to go from pets to slaves. In Apeline Alpha it is said that process took two centuries.

Now recognizing these facts doesn't this scenario make more sense:

In Apeline Beta, because of the use of gene splicing and hi-tech other high tech techniques Apes evolve quicker from pets to slaves.

In Apeline Alpha, the nuclear war takes place in the 20th century before the plauge. The survivors of humanity create a rural society. Then the plauge happens. Because they don't have high tech methods available it takes two centuries for Apes to go from pets to slaves.

Now doesn't that make a lot more sense.

The separate 2-disc DVD of the cartoon series actually is better quality than the TV show, but the problems the TV show transfers have (for instance, I think the first episode looks too "contrasty") are minor and only the most finicky fans would find it unwatchable.

WOW, this review is really really nasty on it. Apparently, according
to them, the video quality sucks, or it is average at the best.

      T.C.

"This being television from the early '70s, I was not expecting much in the way of audio or video. Let me just say I did not end up being disappointed. The video is standard 1.33:1 full frame and considering its age I'm surprised things did not look worse. Colors look generally authentic but not much can make up for the blandness of the palette used during production. Detail tends to be fairly sharp when the numerous instances of softness don't rear their ugly head. The main problem lies in the condition of the source material. Specks, nicks, and scratches are a pretty constant reminder of the age of this series and after a while I almost learned to not notice them."

I think this guy is being quite fair.  Fox has not bothered to do the kind of restoration and digital cleanup on these shows that some would like to see, but for what they are they are not bad.

BTW, I've been renting the "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" TV show DVDs.  Someone at Fox must love that series because they look fantastic.  Often they look almost as if shot yesterday.

Plus, with "Voyage" I was really pleased the shows kept the original
20th Century Fox Television bumpers, they weren't replaced with the
overly bright & loud new bumper that was used with APES and MASH.

It's hard to make a story interesting when everyone knows what's going

It's not that different from Bill's audio but where he's gone for a

Yeah, I don't understand why it's taken so long for these companies to realize that a part of what fans want when they look at this stuff is to be taken back in a time machine to what it was like back then.

The best example that I have seen is the Twilight Zone Ultimate
collection box. Cigarette ads in the end credits, Rod Serling teasers
for next week, the cbs logo, gunsmoke coming up next teasers, all

Yeah, I was going to add that I'm sure there are some fans that wouldn't mind buying collections of episodes in which the actual commercials that played in their original broadcasts were reinserted into the TV show breaks.

BTW, you know it was smoking cigarettes that killed Rod Serling.  I think that guy had a four or five pack a day habit.

Thanks Bobby. I do think that it is meant to be circular since Paul Dehn said so on several occasions. But the alternate timeline theory is very creative but creates too many discrepancies unless approached as I laid out.

          Thanks Bill, Dave and Zach.

Chris came up with the idea of the Journal a few years back and it is ideal for a weekly serialization. And as much as it broke our hearts to put the Lawgiver on hiatus, the old boy did need a rest.

As far as the execution, Cornelius himself has written all the Journal entries. That's our story and we are sticking to it;-)

If I could wish in a fantasy world for one Mego accessory, it would be
a proper heliograph. Heliographs were meant to be a big part of the tv
series--as well as The Trap, they were a fundamental plot device of The
Tyrant until they were cut and in the 1977 UK Annual the gorillas use
small portable versions.Mego DID include a heliograph in one set, but
it was a crappy little disc thing.A proper scale heliograph would be
cool.As would a scale model of Ann's carriage from The
          Interrogation.And Urko's chair.And Leuric's glider. I launched my Mego
rock launcher last week to celebrate the new releases and that thing is
surprisingly powerful and accurate! John, Scrolls.

          Hello fellow ape fans!

A friend of mine has a wonderful image from a magazine of his youth.
He told me which YA zine it came from but I've forgotten the name.
What I can't forget is the image itself! Its an ape populated
reproduction of the famous 'Washington Crossing the Delaware'
painting. I've done some searching on the web and in the group's
archives but I've had no luck.

Is anyone here familiar with this? Is it in the files or photos for
the group and I've just missed it?

          Thanks,

It's from SMASH magazine, which can be found here:

          https://pota.goatley.com/misc/smash/

Unfortunately, the poster was missing from the magazine that Greg had
available to scan, and I've never seen it anywhere else online.

Ditto from me as well. The journal is part of a much larger story, and actually the idea came to me while driving home from Boston one night after seeing Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy in concert back in the summer of 2004. If there's ever another comic book company that makes a successful go of a POTA series (and by success I mean an ongoing, monthly series), maybe there'll finally be an opportunity for it to be told. One never knows...

Chris came up with the idea of the Journal a few years back and it is
ideal for a weekly serialization. And as much as it broke our hearts to
put the Lawgiver on hiatus, the old boy did need a rest.

As far as the execution, Cornelius himself has written all the Journal
entries. That's our story and we are sticking to it;-)  <<<.html

That SMASH magazine is gorgeous. It seems to be Roddy's double, Dave
Rodgers, on the cover, from The Surgeon episode--presumably he was
more available than Roddy on set. The 'Marvel Stamps' mentiones on
the cover were clip out stamps from the comics to be collected---
years later, many a fan has wept tears of agony when they realise how
much their collectabe prize comic has been de-valued by that missing
square inch! SMASH is also, I think, unique in having James Naughton
talk positively in print about the series--am I wrong on that?
Hunter's site is the jewel in the crown of Apedom and we'd be lost
          without it.John, Scrolls.

          Thanks, Dr. Hasslien!

OK, it looks like it was this theatre:  http://cinematreasures.org/theater/494/

In fact, scroll down to the last two comments and you'll find two ads from when PLANET opened there, apparently on March 27, 1968 (I've finally found out when it opened in LA!).  The second ad is a strange one, with Heston's autograph on it and a photo of Mort Abrahams, Heston, and.... Edward G. Robinson!  Very strange.

Maybe someone can scan the photo from Greene's book of when PLANET was there and post it on the site, or if it's somewhere already, like in Hunter's site or in this Yahoo group's files, provide a link to it?

The "Cher" costume looks like a cheap hallowen, not a screen used, also is the blonde wig...

That is a still from the Sonny & Cher variety show which aired on CBS in the early '70s. They did a spoof of POTA the same week that Beneath premiered on the network.

          Yes, it was.

I would think. If Dr. Hasslein would be interested in mailing his
copy to me, I could scan it....

Funny thing was, when I saw it on ebay last November, I thought about
buying it and sending it to Greg or Hunter to add to the Smash scan,
but figured since I had one already, I'd let another fan win it. I
didn't mention the listing to the group, because at the time I thought
mentioning ebay listings was frowned upon... The poster sold for only
$10... I thought it would go for a lot more.

As far as mailing my copy, it's means too much to me to risk putting it
into the mail. If someone lives in Los Angeles, preferably the San
Fernando Valley, and wants to scan it and send it to Hunter's site, I'd
be more than willing to bring it. Or better yet, Hunter, why don't you
          mail me your scanner!?! :)

            Peter,

There are private groups and public groups. DG is a private group and the owners are within their rights, as defined by Yahoo, to decide whom they accept as member.

As to why your membership was refused, my advice is to privately contact the owners to discuss the matter.

            James
