Woo hoo! I live in Nashville! I'll be there with bells on. Or,
considering the weather in Feb. maybe something warmer.

Hunter- let me know when you're coming in to see it and maybe we can
meet up. I might try to take my 11 year old to a screening. He might
just love it.

Actually, I always thought it did. I can't think of any other scenes where there was a prominent "ape with chains".

A friend and I did the same thing with the S.W.A.T. actions figures and the van you could get for them. We'd play the 7" single of the song and have the van pull out as soon as the main rhythm part started.

Did you find any of the POTA material? The list here (http://www.lmu.edu/Page19842.aspx) seems to indicate there's quite a bit of Apes material there, plus stuff from when Jacobs was trying to produce his version of Dune.

Yeah, it's a gold mine. It'd take quite a while to go through it all. I haven't been there in 10 years. I think I have a "Dune" script and a script when he was going to do Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" (long before Kenneth Branaugh had the bright idea). I thought it'd make a good article about the other sci-fi movies Jacobs developed, including "Journey of the Oceanauts". I think at the end of his life, Jacobs realized, "Screw musicals! Sci-Fi sells!"

We're coming to the end of the year in which Charlton Heston died and I thought I'd pose this question: Why do some people seem to absolutely hate Heston? I bring it up because I just read a review of "Valkerie" ( http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39537 )and they were talking about Tom Cruise and his baggage and they suddenly pulled Heston out of the hat and gave him serious venom. I know he had a reputation as a staunch conservative and there was the NRA thing but I don't recall any really serious thing that should bring out the hate. I remember Tim Roth said he couldn't stand being on the set with him during POTA2001, and that George Clooney made a remark that Heston deserved his Alzheimer's. Stuff like that. Any comments on why people would, not just disagree with him, but hate him?

Heston was a right-winger and Hollywood, largely because of the legacy of the blacklist, hates right-wingers, also Heston was once on the other side and Hollywood really can't stand what they see as a traitor to liberalism.

You all should hear Joe Russo on this subject.

Well, it could be that Heston was considered, within the film community, a "turn-coat".  Going back years he wasn't always a right-winger - in fact he was extremely liberal.  He even participated in civil rights marches.  I have no idea what turned him in a different direction, but I'm sure that his change of thinking, from one end of the spectrum to the other upset many in Hollywood.
It's a strange town.  I mean, no one wants to talk how much of a S.O.B. Ronald Regan was along with his wife when they worked for McCarthy as spies within the Hollywood community turning in people for investigation for the crimes comity.  Go figure.

I live about a mile from Columbine High School (site of a horrendous
school shooting, for those of you outside the United States or with an
incredibly short memory). After the massacre, our pleasant little
community was, needless to say, shaken to the core. It was a real kick
in the gut to a pretty quiet, unassuming suburb of Denver; you could
walk into ten stores or restaurants and not hear a single word being
spoken. A horrible moment.

Anyway, just days after the Columbine massacre, Good Ol' Chuck Heston
thought it'd be a great idea to fly into Denver, hold a giant NRA rally
and tell us why guns are really, really good.

Now, I'm as liberal as it gets, so Chuck sort of generally offended me
any time he just opened his mouth (unless he was acting, of course; he
truly was an phenomenal actor with incredible skills). And I'm a great
believer in the First Amendment (and the Second Amendment, which I
believe all of these wing-nuts have seriously mis-interpreted; how is
our current gun situation "well-regulated"?), but Heston's actions just
went WAY too far for a community trying to heal after a devastating
psychological blow. It was akin to flying into Dachau to address a
group of Holocaust survivors, and then tell them how awesome gas
chambers are, and how lucky Germans are to be able to own one.

Very, very tasteless and insensitive, and, despite my great admiration
for Charlton Heston the actor, I will never forgive Charlton Heston the man.

The bitterness in Hollywood over the McCarthy era will go on for some time. Liberalism tends to dominate in any artistic community because of the tolerance that's needed in dealing with the wide variety of people involved. Conservatives tend to be the rather square types, though often the turn out to have some pretty kinky secrets.

As for Heston... I wouldn't say he was ever a liberal in the more extreme sense, he was a Roosevelt Democrat and when the party got more radicalized because of Vietnam, which Heston supported, he left. John Kennedy was supposedly a liberal, but I think most liberals today look back at him as rather a hawk. You have to remember that one of the big things that happened in 1968, besides PLANET coming out, was that the Democratic Party spilt over Vietnam and the liberals ran out most of the conservatives.

I think the real reason Heston is hated by so many is because of the things he said and did for the NRA, which is pretty radical over gun rights. Eventually it'll be forgotten and the movies will endure.

Anyway, just days after the Columbine massacre, Good Ol' Chuck Heston
thought it'd be a great idea to fly into Denver, hold a giant NRA rally
and tell us why guns are really, really good.

Very, very tasteless and insensitive, and, despite my great admiration
for Charlton Heston the actor, I will never forgive Charlton Heston the man.

Scott
The thing you have to remember about the NRA types is that they are a VERY paranoid bunch, and Heston was once their leader (think Ursus). They think the government wants to take all their guns away and that then the military will take over and we'll have a dictatorship. They really believe this. It's crazy, but they simply can't see it any other way and they're insensitive to those that see the easy availability of guns as a public health and safety issue. For them, you HAVE to have private ownership of guns in order to have democracy. It's as American as apple pie, and this kind of mentality isn't going to be out of the American psyche for many generations to come.

I was reading the apes article from the dec,2008 starlog mag,it
mentioned 3 scrips of unfilmed apes tv series episodes:

1, a episode where galon is on trial by a group of humans living in NY
subway.Virdon is him lawyer.

2,a episode where a ape family comes to grips with a radio
transmiter.Virdon tries to use to contact a superior human base.

3, a episode where there is a group of human and apes who seek to join
together both apes and humans.

these 3 unseen tv series episods seem really interesting. If only thay
were filmed, maybe thay could have helped the show last longer than 1
season.Any comments? Are there a way to view the scrips unline? I think
all of us would love to read them!

That pretty much sums it up. It paralels me in a way. I used to be quite liberal but as time went on, became more conservative. Well, with my change of heart came a loss of a couple liberal friends you couldn't approve of the change in my thinking. But it was only a couple, with the rest of them being fine with people that think different. But those couple were also the most beligerently vocal about it as well.

I guess what I am trying to say is, the people with the most venomous feelings for Chuck will be the ones you hear the most. The others who simply disagreed with Chuck but liked him, you will never hear about, same with the people who actually agree with Chuck.

One thing I always remember when Chuck died was an obituarity in a magazine from Richard Dryfuss, who is Heston's political opposite. It was a very good and very loving obituary.

There are only 4 TV series scripts listed as "unproduced." Your three

I believe two of them are named in the article: "Hostage" and "A
Fallen God." The third is actually two scripts by Rod Serling:
"Episode One" and "Episode Two." All are worth reading, and all are
on Hunter's site. Four other unproduced episodes ("The Trek,"
"Freedom Road," "The Mine" and "The Trial") are unavailable, but
synopsis of each can be found in Simian Scrolls #12.

They never produced one for Conquest. People have speculated that
it's because it was too dark and/or because it was rated PG.

One thing I thought was cool was that Heston felt Oliver Stone was a great
director (and said so in his autobiography) but said a guy like Stone would
never work with him because of his politics. Well, Stone heard the comment
and gave him a cameo in "Any Given Sunday". Not a great movie but it's kind
of a tribute to Heston; There's clips from "Ben Hur" in it and Heston plays
the football commissioner. It's football players as modern gladiators with
Chuck representing a time when men were men.
Anyway, both Heston and Stone are almost defined by their opposite
political views so it was nice to see a mutual admiration society from them
(and Stone went to Chuck's funeral).

I prefer the Sideshow (and Sideshow's Ursus rocks). They got the sculpts right; these are more Apemania level. Don't like the hair. And I like Sideshow's subdued colors instead of these Beatles apes. If I was Hot Toys I'd try to do characters that haven't already been done to death (though it sounds like Fox is keeping a tight rein on what gets made, as was said about the Mego repros).
The POTA Babies are hilarious. But Kubrick did that better, too. But of course I wish them luck with these.

You know, that's something that's always annoyed me. Actors/actresses who read scripts, take the part, cash their paychecks, and then trash the finished product. It's not like anyone was holding a gun to their head. A current "popular" TV actress (who's name I won't even bother mentioning because it'd be an insult to Kim to make the comparison) did one of those gross-out summer comedies last year (which made a ton of money BTW), and then recently she was complaining about how her character was portrayed in the story.

To be honest, though I certainly don't hate Heston, I've never thought

as hell to watch in action? Definitely. An integral part of POTA
history? Indesputably. But a good actor? I'm not sold. In my
opinion, he's right up there with William Shatner, Lawrence Olivier
and John Schuck for over-the-top scenery-chewing and over-acting, and
though I'm a great fan of his work (and theirs as well), I can't say
I've ever been all that impressed with his ability to act.

One other reason might be that Power Records simply started in waves of 4 - 4 Marvel Comics (Cap, FF, SpiderMan, Hulk), a few months later, 4 monsters (Man-Thing, Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf), and a few months later, 4 POTAs.  Then they got more random as time went on but never went back and did Conquest.

A judge has ruled that Fox owns the rights to the anticipated "Watchmen" movie. Back in the '80's, Fox bought the rights to the graphic novel but didn't make the movie. Since then, Warner Bros. has made their own movie (by the director of "300" and starring Jackie Earle Haley, POTA's own Kraik). But if Fox owns the rights it remains to be seen what the next step is.

Geez, I always thought it was "a lot".   ;-)

Being that this was on a Friday night, I was up later than usual since I didn't have to get up for school the next day. I have a vivid memory of coming out to the living room and catching the unmasking scene and asked what the name of the movie was, and when my parents told me I made the connection to the airing of PLANET from the month before and figured out that BENEATH was the second in the series (thanks to Godzilla movies, as a child I understood the concept of a sequel). I think I had only seen a moment or two of PLANET as well but (obviously) they both resonated with me.

It's interesting to read the wording in the initial listing since TV Guide still uses a variation of that description to this day, but edited down somewhat. It's also a reminder of how good of a magazine it used to be once upon a time before they f'd it up in the 90's and then went to a tabloid format a couple years back.

As for the review, I'm guessing it was by mainstay TV Guide columnist Judith Crist, who seemed to have a penchant for trashing the movies I loved. What's particularly ironic is the fact that in the review she writes about needing a carefree mood to enjoy the film, but every review I ever read gave me the impression that she really didn't know how to appreciate certain movies for what they are. I remember a particularly scathing review of the first Incredible Hulk TV Movie, and she was carrying on about how stupid it was that the character got mad and turned into a green monster.

Subject: OT: Scott Frank's dog wags the box office
        .html
        .html
Scott Frank, POTA new movie designate in 2009, finished off the year in fine form as he and Fox took their first animal movie together to the top of the box office. "Marley and Me" beat out such stars as Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, Will Smith and Jim Carrey with $37 million this weekend and $51.7 million since opening on Christmas Day (it also set a Christmas Day record of $14.7 million). The movie is about the ups and downs of a marriage during the lifespan of their dog Marley (named after a certain reggae singer).
The film's director, David Frankel, said he liked the bestselling book by Josh Grogan but didn't see a movie in it. Scott Frank's script changed his mind. Says Frankel, "What Scott wrote into the script was a sense of longing. He didn't make it an episodic, literal translation of the book. He made it the story of a marriage - the whole roller-coaster this couple goes through over a period of 14 years. I felt it was as close to an autobiographical film as I could possibly make, because it's about a happily married writer who lives in South Florida with his dog, and I'm happily married, living in Miami, writing some of the time, and I have 5 dogs".
Frankel says he also liked the restlessness that Scott Frank's script captured: "I love my wife and kids, and yet there are always days when I think, "Is this it?"...That's what I wanted the movie to capture, and that's why the dog is such a beautiful metaphor for happiness...They are about, "How can I be happy in this very moment?" People often forget to do that".
Since the movie deals with a lifetime, it has to end on a wistful note: "We all have to deal with the end of things. Hopefully the movie provides you with a lot of space to project elements of your own life into it. In that sense, the spareness of the story - the simplicity of it - is beautiful...In a way, the core target audience for "Marley and Me" is men in their 40's, because we are at that time in life (both Frankel and Frank are 48) where we've lost some dogs, and we know there are still more to lose and we are hyper-aware of the need to celebrate each day".
If Scott Frank puts as much thought into apes as he does into dogs we may have something.

In today's "Parade" magazine, Mark Wahlberg explains the origin of his charitable organization the Mark Wahlberg Foundation. It seems he got $10 million from starring in POTA2001 and that gave him the idea to start it, saying, "I recalled how the 9 kids in my family belonged to programs like the Boys and Girls Clubs".
So far, the Foundation has granted $2 million to inner-city programs for kids. POTA2001 remains Wahlberg's box office tally in a starring role. The only other movie he's been in that did better was "The Perfect Storm" but that goes in George Clooney's column. Wahlberg is up for a People's Choice Award on Jan. 7 for Best Action Star. "Apes" lives and so does Wahlly.

Frankel says he also liked the restlessness that Scott Frank's script captured: "I love my wife and kids, and yet there are always days when I think, "Is this it?"...That' s what I wanted the movie to capture, and that's why the dog is such a beautiful metaphor for happiness... They are about, "How can I be happy in this very moment?" People often forget to do that".
Since the movie deals with a lifetime, it has to end on a wistful note: "We all have to deal with the end of things. Hopefully the movie provides you with a lot of space to project elements of your own life into it. In that sense, the spareness of the story - the simplicity of it - is beautiful... In a way, the core target audience for "Marley and Me" is men in their 40's, because we are at that time in life (both Frankel and Frank are 48) where we've lost some dogs, and we know there are still more to lose and we are hyper-aware of the need to celebrate each day".
If Scott Frank puts as much thought into apes as he does into dogs we may have something.

Didn't Dehn's script specifically mention that THE END should come at the ending of the rear credits crawl? Was anyone here who was at the initial screening remember seeing this?

You need a firmware update for your player. The Samsung web site

You could assume that Lisa said "No" and that the second half of Caesar's speech happened after the end titles of the 'Director's Cut'.

It's certainly feasible--we need only assume that Lisa did say "no"
offscreen, that Caesar delivered his entire final speech, and that
Breck survived the brutal beating. As you say, they can be seen as
fundamentally different views of the same events. The one issue I'd
potentially have with this is that it would then mean Caesar does the
        following:

        * Gives a great impassioned, fire-and-brimstone speech about the apes
        revolting.
        * Stands by while the gorillas beat Breck to a bloody, broken pulp,
almost to the point of death, even though it wasn't necessary to do so.
        * Hears the girl he has a crush on say "no."
        * Based entirely on that one utterance, turns into the simian version
        of Gandhi.

For me, that's the only stumbling block here: that he'd take the more
peaceful path mere seconds after standing by and letting his soldiers
beat Breck senseless with rifle butts, shattering his body. It makes
him seem as if he has a multiple-personality disorder, or that he's
at least indecisive and easily swayed.

Don't get me wrong, though--I'm all for keeping everything in a
single continuity if it can be done, and the discrepancies in this
case are actually very minor compared to some of the others committed
in the course of the Apes series. Although it does seem odd that the
Caesar who would allow Breck to be brutalized would seconds later
call for peace and then become the benevolent type seen in Battle, in
the end I don't really have a problem with it. Breck is, after all,
the guy who ordered him tortured, and who ordered the torture of
thousands of Caesar's followers; everyone gives in to moments of
anger now and then, and Caesar can be forgiven this one.
