Happy New Year everyone!
Though the 40th anniversary stuff seems to
be over, hopefully this year will see the development of a proper new "Apes"
movie. It's the "Year of the Gorilla", after all. And some solutions to the
current ills of the world.
My best to you and yours!

.htmlWell 2008 (the original film's 40th anniversary year) is over and it was a good year for POTA fans.
The year started off with a marathon of all the films on AMC followed by subsequent marathons on Monster HD, the Fox Movie Channel and today's marathons on Encore Action & Movieplex.
There were revival shownings of Planet in theaters all across the country including at the Ziegfeld here in NYC. Several group members traveled to New York last March for this and I was lucky to finally meet them face to face. (Before this year I had not seen any of the films in a theater with an audience since the Go Ape! festival in 1974 and wound up seeing Planet on the big screen not once but 3 times as well as seeing Beneath again at Lincoln Center where we met Cindy Heston.)
All of the films were finally release on Blu-Ray disc including the original director's cut of Conquest. Thanks to FMC for including this verision of the film during their Thanksgiving marathon.
Mego retro figures were released by EMCE toys and Sideshow is now promising new highly detailed figures.
Sadly, we lost Charlton Heston this year along with Leonard Rosenman, Beverly Garland and other contributors to the POTA universe.
Of course the big news was that a new film is in development by 20th Century Fox. Whether this new film will be released before the end of this year still remains to be seen.
Let's all hope that 2009 is as good a year for POTA fans as 2008 was. Happy New Year! <.html

On top of James's great summary, I even updated my web site several

Greetings, my friend. I
get a kick out of those ads, too. If only we could get them at those
prices today. The ones that stand out to me are the 8mm home movies.
Only 12 minutes long, in black & white, and with no sound, but considered a
prize in those days. LOL More coming soon, plus a few more articles
for you. By the way, the Monster Quiz is from Famous Monsters of Filmland,
not The Monster Times. Sorry for the confusion.

The original Planet article
appeared in Famous Monsters #52. Unfortunately, that was one of the issues
that was stolen from me in my divorce. I am checking later issues to see
if it was repeated. The original Beneath article that appeared in issue
#80 was repeated in issue #149, so I'm sure the first article was repeated, as
well. I'm searching for it and will post it if I come across
it.

Forbidden Zone, thus a savage/primitive man BORN on the Planet of The
Apes.
"You may not like what you find" - Zaius doesn't really know Taylor is
from the past of the Planet of the Apes, but just "theorizes" that the
ruins belong to Taylor's ancestors... which is... TRUE in a way!

I used to think that way.
But really, they have no control over the production,
other than their own performance, when they sign on.
And even that can be screwed up by editing. Gary
Oldman refused to give one director what he wanted
because he knew that's the one he'd use. Sure some
just need a pay check. Or take anything offered: Michael
Cain. But most do what they can with what they have.

It wasn't so much the budget (the budget was
one of the reasons the show was killed; it was too expensive for a TV show). It
was more the time factor, having to shoot, shoot, shoot. Plus Roddy was
guaranteed time off to "rest" his face. So when they had Roddy, they wanted to
shoot. The gloves were a time saver. I think a lot of the makeup problems had to
do with the time factor. They had a lot of good makeup people on it (including
Stan Winston) but it was too quick a schedule.

It's not a question of if the makeup was bad. The makeup was what it was. It was always a matter of how was the shot lit and how carefully were the cameras angled. The TV show actually had better makeup than BATTLE, but too often was harshly lit with the camera angled to show right into the mouths. Also, many of the actors didn't know how to use the makeup and would allow their mouths to just hang open as they spoke.

That's why you see a touch of dark smoke over his mouth in that scene.
Never really noticed it until DVD came around.

I'd want to be in PLANET -- of course -- on the day out on the Ape City set in the ranch when they were shooting the scene during the hearing. It looked like a nice sunny summer day in 1967, all of the principals were on set and I could have been one of those extra apes walking around in the background. I don't care if I had the makeup on or just a mask, nor if I were a chimp or gorilla, just as long as I wasn't a female chimp. I think that scene was shot on my birthday on June 22, 1967, so I would have turned eight. So in reality I would have had to have been a child ape.

Taylor would've already known what was there. Zaius also crinkled up
Taylor's paper airplane, as if to suppress the idea of flight.

Just to keep conversation going here....
If you could go back in a time machine and be an extra-for-a- day on the set or location of an APES film which one of the series would it be, what scene and what would you want to be, gorilla, chimp, orang or human, and why?
I'd want to be in PLANET -- of course -- on the day out on the Ape City set in the ranch when they were shooting the scene during the hearing. It looked like a nice sunny summer day in 1967, all of the principals were on set and I could have been one of those extra apes walking around in the background. I don't care if I had the makeup on or just a mask, nor if I were a chimp or gorilla, just as long as I wasn't a female chimp. I think that scene was shot on my birthday on June 22, 1967, so I would have turned eight. So in reality I would have had to have been a child ape.

I always thought it was strange that they took the time to redub the line,
but then showed Cornelius and Lucius running over to untie him. I can understand
the line itself being redubbed because in the original there was more of an
urgency when Zaius said "Untie me!!" (partially because of the gorilla
soldiers riding back in and Zaius wanting to stop them from pursuing Taylor),
but with the scene being re-edited in BENEATH it came across as much more
subdued. Still, why not "Cornelius. Lucius. Untie me."?
I also wondered why they felt the need to remove "Drive him back into his
jungle lair" from when Cornelius was reading the Sacred Scrolls.

As an alternative, I'd be an extra on the set of Tim Burton's remake

I'd always thought the "Zira. Cornelius." part had been cut from PLANET.
Joe Russo told me it was a redub and that it was felt needed to reintroduce the characters, who would reappear later in the film.
I've always thought it odd that Lou Wagner gets a credit in BENEATH, though his character only appears via a clip from the previous movie, and Roddy McDowall gets no mention at all.

I never said they were reused appliances, simply that they're
obviously based on the Chambers design. OK, my wording is a little
different on the page, but based on the design is what I meant, not
that they're actual Chambers appliances.
--------------------------------------------------
Episode 6 of the 1976 Wonder Woman TV show was entitled "Wonder Woman
vs. Gargantua" and featured a gorilla named, appropriately enough,
Gargantua. The costume was by Donfeld. The Gargantua makeup is
obviously based on the same John Chambers prosthetics created for
Planet of the Apes. That's in contrast to most TV apes before then,
which usually consisted of full-head masks.
Throughout the episode, the makeup details varied, depending on
lighting and the day of shooting, but in several scenes, the face is
almost identical to one of the Apes gorillas. In captures 5 and 6, you
can even see the actor's non-blacked-out teeth in the open mouth. Note
the changes in the size of his head, too.
A tenuous Apes tie-in, but very cool nonetheless.

I'd want to be a gorilla solider in BENEATH when they shot the underground
invasions scenes so I could see all the different sets: subway, tunnel,
exterior/interior of the Cathedral, interrogation chamber, Hall of Busts, jail
cell- all of it. Plus maybe I'd have been at the exterior shoot when they first
enter the "subterranean passage" and I'd actually know where the location
was on the Fox Ranch/Malibu State Park.

Reviews: Planet of the Apes Prequel
By Clifford Kiyabu - aka TCW
All the info I have right now is that in this installment it will show the
origins of how the apes took over the earth. Being that we already saw how that
happened in 1972's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, my
money's on it being a ...

.html Hi, folks,
Consider the following exchange from the first film:
HONORIUS
Tell the court, Bright Eyes--what is the second Article of Faith?
TAYLOR
I admit, I know nothing of your culture.
HONORIUS
Of course he doesn't know our culture--because he cannot think.
(to Taylor) Tell us why all apes are created equal.
Would you take that to indicate that the second Article of Faith says
all apes are created equal? Or do you read that rule as being
separate from the second Article of Faith? I'm debating how to
interpret the exchange.

.htmlUntil I can talk to Zaius myself, I'll posit that he knew Taylor was not from the Forbidden
Zone; Taylor was too advanced to have come from such a primitive place and culture, and
at the same time too clueless about the Forbidden Zone and ape culture to have been
from anywhere around there. Under those circumstances, Zaius would have had to
believe that Taylor was from some place truly far away, maybe extra-terrestrial, but really
just wanted Taylor to get the hell out his world.

.html A little more about myself, as requested. :-)
I'm 42 y/o, married for 12 years and live in a small town about 30
miles south of Chicago. My favorite POTA movie has got to be the
first one in the series. I have a small confession to make to the
group. Because I didn't want the series to end, I've never allowed
myself to see "Battle for the POTA"!!!!! :-o I think I'll finally
watch it when I get my blu ray collection in the mail(next week). I
know....what kind of self respecting POTA fan would purposely avoid
the last movie in the series?! LOL...
My least favorite apes movie was the Tim Burton "re-imagining". Maybe
I'm just too set in my ways and old-fashioned, but I didn't see a
need to remake a classic.
I've been able to recapture all the vintage MEGO figures thanks to
Ebay, but the Treehouse Playset is always "just out of my reach"
financially when I find it on Ebay. I'm now wrestling with the
decision of whether or not to buy the Hot Toys figures. I really
don't see how I'm going to resist those beauties!!
One of my favorite POTA items, even though it's not
vintage/collectible, is the Caesar bust that houses the complete POTA
dvd collection. I've had him out of the box a few times, but I'm
afriad to leave him out for good. We have two very hungry dogs and I
don't trust them.
Another collection I've been working on is G.I. Joe Adventure Team
items. Remember the old fuzz faced figures? I love those things! I'm
also a HUGE vintage KISS collector and have nearly all of the
merchandise they churned out in the late 70's. I tend to live in the
past through the memories of my childhood toys. Although I'm into a
lot of different things, POTA will always be first on my list. <.html

left off the original opening? Are all copies of it gone? Has anyone
ever seen even a still from this, supposedly brutal opening? I know it
exists in both the novelization and the Marvel adapt. <.html

.htmlWelcome to the pond, Steve. I can't consider the reimagination as a Planet of the Apes movie myself. It was just so darn horrible!! I have been a POTA fan now for a very long time, and have been bitten big time by the Planet of the Apes bug by finding this group...which led to many interesting and fun ape related projects, Mego scale, 1:6 scale and recently 1:1 scale. I am married, too, and my husband just can't understand this obsession I have.

.html.html Sound cool, Mike.
Speaking of which, I surprised no one ever came up with the idea of making a Planet of the Apes short film project much like fans do with Star Wars.
We definitely have the writers and makeups among ourselves for it. When you look at all these great short stories and comics we've come up with, I'm surprised no one has ever considered putting something like this on film. Even all the great short stories on "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes" comic book series. I especially like the one of Zira and Cornelius coming across that "People News Monthly" magazine with Caesar on the front cover. To film something like that, you wouldn't even need to build sets. Just an office space and an outdoor desert scene. And there's plenty of that in California. :o)
It would make for a good 10 to 15 minute movie short and very cheap to make.
With all the makeups and costumes at apemania's disposole, I'm surprised they never came up with something like that.
