You know, this really concerns me. It puts me in mind of things like the new Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, etc. The name is being used, but there's no connection besides that to the original source material. It's the original characters, stories, and concepts that have kept these kinds of franchises alive over the decades, and most fans want to see these same characters/storylines and find out what would be happening now 30 to 40 years later.

Based on early reports, I really don't have a good feeling about this. It could be an interesting film, but it won't do anything to further POTA as we know it.

What scale are you looking for?  There is a Medicom version and a Sideshow version.  And someday, I will finish my own Mego-scale version that I am still sculpting.

Hello POTA Members,

This is one of my favorite movies (excluding the 2001 re-make, however).

Remakes are just unnecessary, in my opinion.

Does anyone know where I might find a replica of the Wise Ape (not
sure of the name) statue from the first film? I think this statue was
in the simian worship house (when Taylor was hiding, and the young ape
saw him)?

eBay was my first thought, but I wanted to ask the "experts" first.

:)

Thanks!

First, welcome to the group! Please feel free to make use of all the groups resources.

To answer your question, the statue is of the Lawgiver and there are two notable replicas available. One is the Medicom figure which stands at about 7 1/2 inches:

You can get this on Ebay for about $20: http://cgi.ebay.com/Medicom-Planet-of-the-Apes-Greatest-Ape-Figure-POTA_W0QQitemZ190243357126QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

There is also the Sideshow Lawgiver which is about 18 inchs:

This one is harder to find. It was originally sold for $125 but now it can cost anywhere from $200 to $300 depending on where you find it.

If you are a fan of the Lawgiver you should check out one of the group's features, 'Lessons from the Lawigiver': http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/LFTL.htm

I agree for the most part, though I defintely don't think the new BSG
would belong in the same list with the others. By most accounts, the
new Bionic Woman and the new Knight Rider were pretty bad--but the
new BSG is fantastic, a thousand times better than the old series.

As far as direction I am reminded of a comment Jerry Goldsmith makes on the Planet DVD. He noted that Planet has moments of silence and very subtle music then commented when he tried to do a scene with subtle music in a recent film the Director told him, "I don't do subtle".

I tend to agree with Rory. If it didn't make the final cut it didn't happen. It is not canon.

And while I would love to see those deleted scenes on some future release, I would not want them restored to the film itself. You don't tamper with a masterpiece.

Robert Rodriguez who directed the Spy Kids films commented this week that no matter how poorly Montalban was feeling off camera, he always gave 100% once the cameras were rolling. Rodriguez also said that when he was writing Spy Kids 3 he went out of his way to give Montalban a CGI body so he would have one last chance to play the hero.

I would tend to agree with Rich about BSG. The new version is far superior to the original. The original is a cartoon in comparison.

But one thing about the new versions of BSG, BW & KR, for the most part they've kept the original concepts and most of the original characters but updated them for a contemporary audience. One of the problems with POTA 2001 is that they threw everything out but the title as kept nothing else.

I was thinking about what a direct remake of Conquest might look like. I can't decide who to cast as Caesar but for the human roles I would cast Kevin Spacey as Breck, Jimmy Smits as Armando and Adrian Lester as MacDonald.

and with added hair and a repaint, the Mego Zira looks pretty great, too http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/lab029.jpg

I just don't like the Medicom Zira.  I don't know if a repaint would be enough to fix a Medicom Zira.

Yeah, sort of, kind of... maybe...

It reminds me of the argument over colorization of classic BW movies,
some think it's blasphemy, others think it's the bees knees!

I've got stacks of Laurel and Hardy discs that each feature an
original and colorized version and I always choose colorized.

Although hardly a masterpiece, Will Smith's 'I am Legend' featured an
alternate version alongside the studio approved original. In this
instance the 'tampered' version was (IMHO) better.

My point is that I appreciate having the option - with both versions
available ON THE SAME DISC no one is forcing me to watch one or the
other, it's up to me. As a Brit, I've have never even been given the
option of viewing an extended version of 'Battle', which has been
enough to stop me from buying a UK set of discs twice now.

An extended version of 'Planet' etc, which in this case, I agree,
would be little more than a curiosity, would still be a nice option.
The majority might cry 'Foul' but some out there MIGHT actually prefer it.

Remember, some even like the Burton movie! :0)

Colorization is different. It does not change content. It is like the upgrade of Escape's soundtrack to stereo from the original mono. It is an enhancement that does not tamper with content of the film.

And while true many DVDs today feature a second version of a film, that is usually a Director's Cut.

Now if Franklin Schaffner were still alive and wanted to do a Director's Cut of Planet that would be great. But I wouldn't want to see some studio exec just shoving in whatever deleted footage he or she could find in order to make a buck.

True, but one good thing about the 2001 remake is that it revived interest in the original films and we got a lot of new merchandise as a result: the new sideshow figures, new trading cards from Rittenhouse and a new comics series, Revolution, which many think is the finest POTA comic ever done.

That's because people are so dense -- especially in Hollywood.
It doesn't make for good storytelling.  If you hit everyone over the
head with the point you're making, why ever watch it again.  If you
even notice the music on first viewing the composer did a lousy job.

You wouldn't need Armando most likely. If a remake of Conquest starts right there, the Ape would have evolved naturally, not come from the future. This would jibe with Cornelius and Zira's account of their history in Escape.

Tell me, though. Does man, that marvel of the universe, that glorious paradox who sent me to the stars, still make war against his brother? Keep his neighbor's children starving?

I was thinking about what a direct remake of Conquest might look like. I can't decide who to cast as Caesar but for the human roles I would cast Kevin Spacey as Breck, Jimmy Smits as Armando and Adrian Lester as MacDonald.

Lost In Space Star May Dies

    18 January 2009 11:15 PM, PST
Lost In Space star Bob May has died of congestive heart failure. He was 69.
The actor, who played The Robot in the sci-fi TV series, passed away on Sunday in Lancaster Community Hospital in California.
May acted in several movies, TV shows and on the vaudeville stage but was best known for his part in the 1960s programme as the Robinson family's loyal sidekick - a role he claimed to have won by accident.
His co-star June Lockhart, who played Maureen Robinson, recalls, "He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit.
"It was one of those wonderful Hollywood stories. He just happened to be on the studio lot when someone saw him and sent him to see (series creator) Irwin Allen about the part.
"Allen said, 'If you can fit in the suit you've got the job.'"
May and his wife were left devastated in November after losing their family home in the wildfires that ravished parts of Southern California.

The Medicom Cornelius enlarged to a Mego and then tweaked also came out pretty well, but his pompadour needed addition in the back and the front really needed to be shaved down and re-haired with Apoxie.

After POTA, Serling only wrote one other motion picture screenplay (the bulk of his working being exclusively for TV). That screenplay was for the 1972 movie "The Man" in which James Earl Jones plays the first African-American President of the U.S. So Rod was 37 years ahead of his time.

BTW Jones' opponent in the election was played by William Windom who played the President of the U.S. a year earlier in Escape.

I have said it and will say it again that they are very good items , but you would think they would price them to sell, at the price they are asking for them , if i bought three to four of there models that's what i could pay for a screen used costume from any of the films maybe if you can find them.
I know which i would prefer!!!!!
Although sideshow can be expensive depending on where you get them from, especially the prices most of the states charge for postage on top on item.
Here is little fact for you if your not all informed already, if you buy anything from the states ( which i did recently E-Bay) and the value is over £36.00 then you will have to pay V.A.T and approx £8.00 handling fee.
Three times in the last month i have been stung at this end with the extra costs, i have informed the peaple in the states and hopefully they will put this info on there listings.

Well first place for 1/6 scale is normally action man but there is also
Johnny West Horse Thunderbolt ( marx Brothers )
Unfortunatly not yet found a alternative 1/8 scale , because action
stallion starting to get quite expensive.
Maybe another member has found another alternative for this scale.

Actually, for Mego scale, Breyer horses (traditional size) look pretty good.  And it looks better than the Action Stallion IMHO.

You definitely cannot build up a gorilla army with the Hot Toys, unfortunately.  That's why I am going the route I have taken.  Sculpt my own damn gorillas and build up my own army.  Crazy, but fun.

Yes that would be very expensive a fully working in box P.O.T.A Action Stallion sold this week , it went for £97.00 not including postage?????
The picture looks great was it make using the mego Urko with costume change?
I have also been informed that there is a horse 1/8" scale if you look up Action Jackson which is a mego toy , however i have not seen one for sale yet, so dont know how much?

Mark, that's the Mego gorilla soldier that I repainted and reworked the costume to.  He sits astride a Breyer traditional-sized horse.  You can also buy saddles that fit this size Breyer horse, but it would also cost an arm and a leg--maybe $150 just for a handmade leather saddle in the same size, which is why I made my own.  The traditional-sized horse by Breyer should cost a fraction of what an action stallion is currently costing.

I know that Star Wars is the biggest Movie related franchise but was
Planet of the Apes the first .
But at least with the Burton version that makes six movies , which is
the same has Star Wars, both Planet and Star have done cartoon, but
only Planet have done T.V series
Was there any over film before Planet that sold film memrobilia ?????

Issue 22 is what I found today at my local B&N (and it wasn't in that

Actually, a Star Wars TV show is coming next year, and there were also
three original Star Wars TV movies.

What do you mean three T.V movies?
          Films
Started in 1978-9 A New Hope
               Next              Empire strikes back
              Then               Return of Jedi
New batch      Revenge of the Sith
                                   Attack of the clones
Forgot the name of last one
          Then              Clone wars

          So what was the others
And do you know the answer to the rest of question was planet the first with memrobelia

If you count movie serials, there were Flash Gordon in the 30s.

There is a live action SW TV show on its way now.

I would say that the first movie that inspired a tremendous amount of
merchandising was the 1965 James Bond film "Thunderball."

It's true that a lot of the merchandise was fairly generic "James Bond"
stuff (and not necessarily "Thunderball" stuff), but there's no doubt
that the Bond merchandising in the 1960s was enormous.

And let's not forget the onslaught of "Yellow Submarine" merchandise in
          late 1968.

All I know is this: I would give anything to see a "Planet of the Apes
Holiday Special." Art Carney as an orangutan, anyone?

          The 3 TV movies:

          The Star Wars Holiday Special
The Ewok Adventure: Caravan of Courage
          Ewoks: The Battle for Endor

I read that a member was getting sick of answering old questions.
But also metioned maybe should start a Faq page.
Well i have only been a member a short time, and there have been new
          members after me.
I would think a lot of the question's are going to be old, after all
the films are not exactly new are they ???
Even the Tim Burton film is eight years old, so apart from talking
about the new film to be made , which a lot isn't known about and most
are just airing what they hope for or expect from the next film.
Although a rundown of previous questions is a good idea , you will find
there are members who genuinely would prefer feedback, otherwise what
is the point in having a community discussion group in the first place.
Most of us avid P.O.T.A fans love talking about our love of everything
P.O.T.A ,and the feedback we get.
Some questions can probably be found just by google, but you dont have
          the personal touch with that.
I recently mentioned about how expensive the action stallion had become
and this was making it hard for me to start a gorilla army with my mego
gorillas , thanks to a member of this site ( they know they are ) i
found a good substitute , also i have and still trying to find out info
about the live shows which toured the U.K back in the seventy's .
So please improvements yes but dont even think of changing the format
for discussion it is great has it is.
Myself i love everything about it.

The SciFi Now article concludes with a comment on the non talking,
modern genetic Ape premise for the new movie--'the current outline
doesn't lend itself well to the overall Apes property and is unlikely
to rejuvinate the series in any meaningful way'.My personal opinion
agrees with SciFi Now--IT'S THE APES THAT MAKE IT WORK--LET THE APES
          SPEAK!!!!! John, Scrolls.
