Great pic Dave. Thanks.
Of course the bust of Mendez I looks nothing like the actor who played him in Battle. I've always wondered why they didn't bring Paul Richards back to play the part.

The original is about us destroying the
world through war (like POTA). The new one is about us destroying the
environment (though I haven't seen it).

The original sounds pretty liberal even by today's
standards. But in many ways so is POTA.

The only other thing I remember him from was
Roots. He was in the first episode as the high priest of the African Village.
BTW Austin Stoker was in the final episode as one
of Alex Hailey's ancestors.

.htmlNot quite correct there. In the original, Klattu tells us we can be as violent as we want, as long as we keep it here on earth. If we take our violent ways out into space, we'll be destroyed. In the craptastic remake, the Aliens have come to save the planet from us.

the Sea" was released a few weeks ago on DVD and I've been renting it
from Netflix. There's an episode from Nov. 5, 1967 titled "Fatal Cargo"
that guess stars Woodrow Parfrey. It's a stinky episode, badly written
and directed, but what's interesting is that Parfrey must have done this
at Fox pretty close to when he was also doing PLANET, and the episode,
in which Parfrey plays this insane scientist, also features Janos
Prohaska as a super-strong, out of control albino gorilla. The suit
looks to be the same he wore in an episode of "Star Trek," except that
that one had a horn attached to the head, and isn't anymore convincing
than the gorilla suit he used in ESCAPE.
The next thing I'm planning on renting from Netflix is an early episode
of "The Invaders" that features Roddy McDowall.

.htmlThis is some exciting news, I think, for PLANET OF THE APES fans.
One of the first newsstand magazines to provide a complete overview of
the APES series, was CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, a late '50s to mid '70s
contemporary of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND.
When I first saw the APES issue, I was struck by the POTA wraparound
cover, by my old friend, Marcus Boas, here:
POTACoF23a.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/unifan2001/CoF23a.jpg
That is, he's my old friend, now!
;-)
Back in 1973, it would still be a few years before we met!
Marcus did other covers for COF, and he pretty quickly went on to paint
covers for HEAVY METAL magazine, Jim Steranko's MEDIASCENE, one of the
hardback CONAN series... He also did a ton of movie posters, and other
fantasy artwork.
(You can see some of it, here:
"marcus boas" - Google Image
http://images.google.com/images?gbv=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=%22marcus+boas%22&start=0&sa=N
Marcus is still more than active, as any of you who have visited any of
the New York City comic book conventions can attest to!
Marc recently mentioned to me that he'd be more than happy to paint
recreations of the 1970s PLANET OF THE APES magazine cover.
Or, for that matter, any other original fantasy artwork, APES, or
otherwise.
The other good news is that his prices are more than reasonable.
If you're interested, give him a holler, after 12 noon, at:
1-212-989-6193.
Marcus screens his calls, so when you get his answering machine, just
mention POTA, and/or me, and he'll be sure to get in touch.

You could say that POTA is left wing propaganda too.
I prefer to see it as a Don't Blow Up The World film.

Greetings, Hunter. I see you got the three UK Annuals I
donated to Crosseyed Cyclops. I thought you already had those, or I would
have sent them to you before. I also recently donated a four part POTA
series called "Blood of the Apes". If you don't already have it, let me
know if you want me to send it to you, or you can get it from the
Cyclops.

Well, the first half of the fourth season of "Voyage to the Bottom of
the Sea" was released a few weeks ago on DVD and I've been renting it
from Netflix.
The suit
looks to be the same he wore in an episode of "Star Trek," except that
that one had a horn attached to the head, and isn't anymore convincing
than the gorilla suit he used in ESCAPE.=0

The next thing I'm
planning on renting from Netflix is an early episode
of "The Invaders"
that features Roddy McDowall.

I think `enjoyed' may be pushing it. `tolerated' might be closer to the truth. They WERE published during `the wilderness years' and helped keep POTA in the public consciousness. I clearly remember the excitement of finding issue 1 on the shelves.
Stories and artwork varied greatly from appalling to superb. The stories you mention without doubt represent the best and worst of the run. I always felt `Blood of the Apes' was ruined by the rather silly idea that a human could wear an ape mask and have a real ape fall in love with her – but, as others have said I suppose that's no sillier than the idea of talking apes etc in the first place.
Perhaps my all-time favorite panel was from `Urchak's folly', which featured a full splash page that showed two gorillas sitting outside a cell (may have been the last panel of part 1?) I was really struck by the way Chaloner portrayed the gorillas as `real' with real proportions etc but of course had them clothed and holding rifles.
The Ape riders, Frito, Jojo and Count Ape-ula just make me feel ill :0)
I can't for the life of me remember `The Forbidden Zone' – I'll have to dig it out and give it another read.

Yeah, I'm the same way. There's a lot of

Take the Burton film (no, really--please take
it!). The movie itself was very flawed--but the
Dark Horse spin-off comic was excellent.

Yep. That was in the pre-Internet days, so we
often had no idea something was coming until it
showed up. I remember walking into a comic store
and doing a double-take upon seeing issue #4 (I
think that was the issue) sitting on the
shelf. I immediately bought the first four
issues and read them once I got home. My initial
reaction: "Wow, this art is terrible. But the
story is great." And until a new artist was
brought in, that pretty much summed up my feeling
about the series. Interestingly, my favorite
stories were mostly the miniseries and
one-shots--aside from Ape Nation and Ape City,
which I think are awful, all of the stories
outside the monthly series were fantastic. Andy
yet, as much as I enjoyed the monthly title, only
two stories--"Countdown Zero" (the story behind
Cornelius' talking doll) and "Quitting Time" (the
tale of the guy who gets the shoeshine in
Conquest)--were what I'd call excellent. The
rest ranged from very good to stupid.

I know, man. That's the one aspect of "Blood of
the Apes" that always annoys me. How the hell
advanced would Myndith have to be to create a
mask so real that no one realized she wasn't an
ape? But, then, if the apes could go from
primitive to having an entire society of
academics and scholars in only two decades, then
I suppose anything is possible.
>Perhaps my all-time favorite panel was from

Chaloner's work was fantastic. I'm still blown
away by how well-written and well-drawn "Urchak's
Folly" is. There are some brilliant
characterizations in that story, and some great
concepts. I love the idea that the apes captured
a Forbidden Zone mutant and made him their
servant, never knowing he could communicate with other humans via his mind.
>The Ape riders, Frito, Jojo and Count Ape-ula just make me feel ill :0)
The Ape Riders. My God. Could it have gotten
any dumber? Oh, wait, yes--the ape vampire you
mentioned. Okay, then I suppose it could get
dumber. Frito and JoJo were a mixed bag. The
whole "guarding the statue" and "constantly
beating each other up" motifs quickly grew
annoying. However, I have to admit, that whole
"tastes great / less filling" argument they had
after finding a room filled with beer was
hilarious, and the site of Frito vomiting after
viewing a Playboy centerfold cracked me the hell
up. I'm an idiot like that sometimes.
>I can't for the life of me remember `The
>Forbidden Zone' Â I'll have to dig it out and give it another read.
It was about a society called the Primacy, where
apes and speaking humans had learned to co-exist,
until a descendant of Kolp led a holy mutant
crusade to destroy them. Great stuff! <.html

I'll always have a soft spot for these. Good
or bad, they were an event. And it also doubled as the internet, getting to hear
from "modern" fans, the first time I knew there was anyone else in the world who
still liked POTA besides me. "Ape Chronicles" was started through that. And my
letter was published. A lot of good memories.
And some of it was good work. The
miniseries, especially. And the early issues of the main comic, though I think
the big mistake was having one main writer who seemed to burn himself out of
ideas. I think they should have rotated. But those first issues, and "Urchak's
Folly", it seemed like such a treat. And talk of a new movie. Those were the
days, Awchie. Twenty years later the promise of that beginning didn't pan out,
but what does?

fantastic characters. And Urchak's Folly, Blood of the Apes, Countdown
Zero, The Sins of the Father, Quitting Time and The Forbidden Zone still
stand as some of my favorite Apes stories of all time.
What do the rest
of you think? Surely, I can't be the only Malibu fan out there--someone
else HAD to be buying and lovin' this series besides me and Terry Hoknes
(whose letters of praise appeared in several issues). Come on, folks--how
about a little love for the Malibu line?

.htmlI have to agree with you, Jeff. Had the monthly comic had a rotating writing staff, the quality might have been more consistent. Still, "Countdown Zero" and "Quitting Time" were both published in the latter half of the series, so had they rotated writers, we might not have gotten those gems.
And really, how can you go wrong with a character like Zar--a white-eyed bilingual gorilla (English and Spanish), who relentlessly tracks his prey halfway across the United States, then treats them to Chamomile tea and civilized discourse before executing them? Brilliant stuff!
When Charles Marshall scored a hit like that, it was a homerun...and when he fouled, we ended up with vampire mandrills and simian seances.

"Ape Chronicles" was started through that. And my letter was published. A lot of good memories.
> And some of it was good work. The miniseries, especially. And the early issues of the main comic, though I think the big mistake was having one main writer who seemed to burn himself out of ideas. I think they should have rotated. But those first issues, and "Urchak's Folly", it seemed like such a treat. And talk of a new movie. Those were the days, Awchie. Twenty years later the promise of that beginning didn't pan out, but what does?

I pulled Zira's head off and actually tore the vinyl by accident, because I did not heat the vinyl first. If you warm the head/neck area up with a blow dryer, the heads come off easily enough without tearing the vinyl.

I've looked everywhere, but can't find who played
the gorilla in Escape. Most websites list Janos (except IMDB). But,
it's not his suit and the gorilla doesn't have Janos' movements. I also
could only find a pic of the Mugato from Star Trek ( which was his gorilla
colored differently and horn added). None of his gorilla (Gilligan's
Island and such) Look at the difference in the face, alone.

Well, the first half of the fourth season of "Voyage to the Bottom of
the Sea" was released a few weeks ago on DVD and I've been renting it
from Netflix.
The next thing I'm
planning on renting from Netflix is an early episode of "The Invaders"
that features Roddy McDowall.

A little CONQUEST twofer the past couple of weekends. Roddy
McDowall was
The Bookworm in Batman which they (the American Life
TV Network) ran
about a year back (I'm seeing repeats of repeats
now), and last Saturday
Hari Rhodes showed up in Mission:
Impossible as the leader of a black
crime syndicate.
Interestingly, even though it was filmed a year before
CONQUEST,
he looked older in this role.
Now that I think about it, outside
of MacDonald I've always seen him play
a bad guy. I'm sure
that's not all he ever played, but then again I
haven't had the
chance to see him in all that
much either.

It was included in both the Marvel comic adaptation and paperback novelization by Michael Avallone, but- along with so many other

Looking at the photo, it's pretty obvious that all the busts were based on Paul Richard's likeness.

I have an idea for a third Planet of the Apes book, once I finish my
encyclopedia, and wanted to run it past you all, to get an honest
appraisal of what you think of the idea. I was consider writing a
guide to POTA fanfic--plot synopsis, characters, timeline setting,
continuity notes, etc.--since that's not covered in either book. It
would cover anything that's been published in Ape Chronicles, Ape
Crazy, Sacred Scrolls, Simian Scrolls and Century City News, as well
as on Kassidy's site and elsewhere. What do you all think? Is that
something that might interest fans? Or would I just be wasting my

I think you'd be wasting your time, Rich.
A guide to POTA Fanfic wouldn't appeal to anyone outside of Ape fandom. (whereas there's always the chance your timeline book or encyclopedia might appeal to the more 'casual' fan - even a Trekker!)
Due to past traumatic experiences with poorly written examples - many of those INSIDE Apes Fandom despise Fanfic and won't read it.
It might make an interesting article for Chronicles or Scrolls but I can't see it selling as a book.
When I once did some research to find what readers wanted to see more or less of in Scrolls, Fanfic proved the least popular.

Fox and Robert Rodriguez have announced they
will be doing a "reboot' of "Predator" called "Predators" for 7/7/10. Rodriguez
is known for doing his own thing when it comes to filmmaking. He quit the
Director's Guild so he could co-direct a movie with Quentin Tarantino. He turned
down POTA a decade ago because he felt it was being made by committee.
So does his coming on board mean Fox is
giving the creatives some wiggle room to maybe do some interesting reboots?
Maybe this means we'll hear an interesting announcement about POTA soon.
Anyway, Rodriguez gave Ricardo Montalban
some new fans at the end of his career with the "Spy Kids" movies (Montalban in
3-D!) so he's OK in my book.

.htmlI'm going to do whatever ape characters I can get screenshots of. I'm sure that no other toy company would bother with such minor characters...but I really love making them. And even if they do, it makes me happier to tinker on them on my own.
Here's my crazy hair brained idea that some of you may already know. I want to sculpt all the ape heads I can in 1:6 because the bigger scale is easier to sculpt more accurately in. Then, when I have enough characters made, I will make molds of them into which I will pour a shrinking medium for the cast and shrink these casts until they are small enough for Mego scale. When the casts are in the correct scale/size for Megos, I will need to make additional molds and then make casts of them for my Mego scale Ape City.
Once they are in Mego scale, I will need to make screen accurate clothes for them. I want to have enough apes to fill a Mego scale stadium...and I want to photograph them them all in the stadium. I need them to be in Mego scale because I don't have space for a 1:6 scale stadium. I also want to have a Mego scale market scene, and I've started that project last year but I have so many ongoing projects I am afraid that has gone to the back burner. Anyway, those are my crazy grandiose hair brained ideas. It's a slow and meandering trail, but I love this road I am traveling.
Jessica.

I just got back from a weekend in NYC.....
Everyone should see HAIR now on Broadway ...you will soar up to the ceiling.....
Anyway...
Last Christmas I ran across a custom jewelry store down on MacDougal Street which had Planet of the Apes rings amongst the display in the window! Went in and talked to the guy....Al.....very nice man....at the time I left and forgot to get his info (I must have been drinking...yes I think I was....)
Found the store again this past weekend....... I told him I would tell a group of people that span the globe about these and he might get some orders! I know times are tough but they are pretty cool and very well
made.
The pic shows Che Ape which I believe he said would run about $65 Cornelius which goes for 100....it is heavy with a solid back.... and General Ursus (?) which goes for 75.....this does not have a solid back..... he also makes Zira but he was out of her at the moment.....not sure how much she is Looks like he bases them on the Addar models...... Just tell him your ring size.....
PLUS!!!
Up on the top shelf which I almost didn't see......Is a life-size wax(?) head of ZIRA! I asked him about it......He said somebody brought it to him years ago.....I think he traded some work for it.....He's not sure of the history but he said it does say "Kim Hunter" on the bottom.....I told him she used to live not too far away.....(I went and saw her very quaint building) So that was an added surprise......
So if
anyone's in NYC , stop by and see Al and his three legged cat ("Oh, that's a horrible story" he told me...) It's right on MacDougal near Minetta Lane....It's called C'est Magnifique (odd name for a shop run by a guy who looks like he knows Tony Soprano) or you can call or write....he said his website is down at the moment.... Here's his info:
C'est Magnifique Vintage and Custom-Designed Jewelry Alfred Albrizio 120 MacDougal Street New York, NY 10012 (212)-475-1613 Fax: (212)-937-8070
