|
.html Bad news: the apes movie disappeared through a Hasslein Curve on the Pinewood Studios website. I just contacted Pinewood Studios. They have confirmed that the November 14 of Planet of the Apes will NOT be shown.
The reason why they were going to show the 2001 remake was because it was something that was filmed there. But nobody bought the tickets. We know why! Because it sucks!! Then they were going to show the 1968 movie, but there was not enough lead time to make it a success and they have just canceled it today. Rory, please let cinema retro know about the cancellation.
Jess.
PS...Just because it's not showing November 14 does not mean that they won't show the 1968 movie sometime next year. They don't know exactly when but they will let the Forum of the Apes know. Before hanging up, I told them that they need to make sure it's the 1968 movie classic because the 2001 won't sell. They know now.

What?? You mean you didn't instantly figure out the answer to
this the first time a TV channel ever ran a marathon??
A little TV 101 for everybody: there's both an upside and a downside for
stations when they run marathons like this where they're cycling through a
limited amount of programs. The upside is that they know that no matter what, a
dedicated amount of people will be tuning in for a good portion of the
time. The downside is that even the most die hard person isn't going to
watch the same few things over and over. As such, including the five telemovies
literally doubles the amount of programming they have to offer during said
marathon, and mixing the schedule up the way they did actually spreads the
viewers out over a greater period of programming time and keeps the ratings a
little more consistent.
To repeat myself, I really have to wonder which marathon some of you
were watching. I caught parts (or the entirety) of all the different
features FMC ran, and the only one that was questionable was BACK TO
THE PLANET OF THE APES. The picture wasn't as clear as the other four telemovies
(which all looked very good) and the sound was in mono whereas the other four
were stereo.
I know that Fox has messed up with this franchise more often than not, but
let's not go **looking** for problems either. Or things to complain about,
which- honestly- is getting a little f'n tired.
Chris L.
"I was thinking the same thing today... Why would they show these
horrible late seventies transfers of these awful fake TV movie
things?"
>>fox sucks, they run a ape marathon and they run the worst copies
they could possibly find, they really do suck it big time ,sell the apes to a
studio that will do the right thing << <.html

No, it's 2009. And honestly, I enjoy the fact that I can watch these movies
some 30+ years later and still find something new I hadn't noticed before **as
opposed to** having complete and total knowledge and- as such- being instantly
bored with something the moment after it's gone through my head for the

it tastes like and know what all the ingredients are. Not to mention lamenting
all the subsequent flavors of ice cream that came out because they
weren't the original.

the camera pans up from the control panel in front of that one long window

else notice this? <<<.html

Subject: [pota] Pinewood Screening, POTA November 14 CANCELED!!!
Bad news: the apes movie disappeared through a Hasslein Curve on the
Pinewood Studios website. I just contacted Pinewood Studios. They
have confirmed that the November 14 of Planet of the Apes will NOT be
shown.
The reason why they were going to show the 2001 remake was because it
was something that was filmed there. But nobody bought the tickets.
We know why! Because it sucks!! Then they were going to show the 1968
movie, but there was not enough lead time to make it a success and they
have just canceled it today. Rory, please let cinema retro know about
the cancellation.
Jess.
PS...Just because it's not showing November 14 does not mean that they
won't show the 1968 movie sometime next year. They don't know exactly
when but they will let the Forum of the Apes know. Before hanging up,
I told them that they need to make sure it's the 1968 movie classic
because the 2001 won't sell. They know now. <.html

I'm curious- the transfers were bad compared to what? Previous TV
broadcasts? VHS, LD, or DVD releases? I'm wondering if they didn't match up the
bars and tone before they started the broadcasts (it's been known to happen).
Again, the only telemovie I noticed that had a dull picture was BACK TO THE
PLANET OF THE APES.
TV101 again for those who may not know: the bars and tone that you used to
see when a station went off the air is used (among other reasons) to
calibrate the outgoing signal of a playback machine. When this isn't done
properly, you get an incorrect color scheme or volume that's either too low or
too high. This is also the reason that you notice a sharp increase or decrease
in volume when your cable company cuts in with locally produced commercials
during the second half of a commercial break.

It ran for 7 issues
the last couple issues had some original comic
strip stories which are some of the best ever published
definitely worth checking out
I converted all my master copies from paper to

but one page from issue #6 did not work so I've got

One of the very earliest POTA fanzines made. Not sure how many were
published. A few pages each. Crude (but fun) drawings and simple
articles.

Back in the 80's a company called I.T.C. made re-edited "movies" of TV series they owned the rights to a standard practice.
Shows like SPACE: 1999, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, and UFO were sold to many local TV stations forming a kind a Network based on airings of shows produced by I.T.C. (about 10 years later Paramount would do with and call it UPN)
These "movies" were prepared like the latter PLANET OF THE APES one culled from the series.
However, the I.T.C. "movies" were re-edited from 35mm negatives then brought down to 16mm for airing on the local TV stations.
In the 80 when everything switched away from film to video tape airings this changed. It's only till DVD came along this also became noticeable. Shows produced in the 80's done on video seen on DVD have a terrible, almost blurry look to them. They lack contrast, and have smeared colors. CBS produced a selection for late night airings in a package called "Crime time, at Night-time". (Sweating Bullets was one series)
Both FOREVER NIGHT and Friday the 13th: THE SERIES were done on video. Even the first few seasons of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION were
done on video, but unlike the others this series was then transferred onto film (which caused it own set of problems).
Perhaps the POTA series based "movies" are in this domain? They have the look of smeared color, bad contrast and grain level. It is possible they were edited
straight to video, in which case the quality, or lack of would be noticeable. Add to the mix if 35mm elements were used or if it was done from 16mm. Now 16mm
can yield excellent quality - just look at HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES. But FOX being FOX could have the lack of care and cheapness could have used bad materials
in the making of these POTA movies. Watching them when they first aired on the 4:30 movie quality wasn't a concern of most viewers of the day.
If there are better elements of these re-edited "movies", then if the TV Series is ever to be released on Blu-ray FOX should not only restore/re-master the series but give the option to watch the same
in the re-edited "movie" editions - along with the choice to view w/or/w/out the "aged Galen intros/outs.

Yeah, Jessica. This was something I did way back in the early
eighties. I have an art talent and was able to sculpt my own ape
appliances and created by own chimp makeup, even made the wig pieces
myself (used my real hair for most of my head). It all starts with
someone helping you to make a life mask of your face, then you have to
make a plaster cast from that. Once you have the life mask, it's easy
to sculpt an ape face on it with clay, then you make molds of that.
However, the cost of materials and the time involved are such that it's
probably just easier to buy them from Apemania. For me, at the time, I
had issues with the design of the chimp noses, so I sculpted a face
more like SCHLOCK.

Well, I don't know about hell, but they're really quite useless. If
they had shot new footage to frame them or in some way transform the
original episodes (like the producers of STAR TREK did with that show's
second pilot), then these things would have value, but they're
basically just two episodes each cut together and therefore "nothings,"

.htmlThe use of artificial light for photography outdoors, even in bright
sunlight, was a combination of film speed, color balance and shadow
detail. The sun is just one light source and creates deep shadows in
areas it doesn't directly hit. In the natural world sunlight also
bounces off everything else it hits and so will fill in areas of
shadow. Your eyes are very sensitive and so can see great detail in
those shadow areas, but film, especially in the past, is much less
sensitive than your eyes and sees those same shadow areas as just black
blobs, therefore fill lighting is needed. This is done with either
reflectors or artificial lighting and more often a combination of both.
Also, color photography requires very diffuse lighting. Look at
behind the scenes shots from the APES movies during the scenes outdoors
and you'll see huge arch lights and more. Watch the end of PLANET
carefully and you'll notice that at the beach the sun is usually behind
the actors, but their bodies are brightly lit by all the artificial
lighting being cast on them. Westerns are great things to watch for
this kind of thing. A cowboy can be standing in a desert with a
blazing hot sun on him and yet he's casting as much as three or four
shadows. A rider and horse will gallop past the camera and you can see
that someone out of frame is tracking them with a huge reflector to
keep them well lit. In the past this was mostly needed because of low
film speed, which was worse with color film. Nowadays, film is much
faster and HD digital cameras are even faster. Lighting doesn't need
to be as "hard" as it used to be, which explains why modern film
overall have a much "softer" look to them than older films.
Personally, I miss the old "hard" lighting. To give an example of this
I'll site the two different versions of THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX." In
the modern one, the lighting is so soft in the desert scenes that you
hardly get an impression of any heat, in fact you can easily tell
they've shot the film in cool weather, but in the older version, shot
in the sixties, the lighting is so hard you never forget during the
movie that these guys are baking (helped a lot by the old artificial
sweat they used to put on them).
Well, I guess I've gone on long enough about this, but I'd like to hear
from others who might know more.

But have you ever thought that a good idea would be to send your wife

I'm talking Dr. Zaius for good frontal lobotomies. Yes, there's
nothing like a good frontal lobotomy for solving family problems. Ah,
if only, then you could hang up anything you wanted and run APES movies

In one sense, those five TV Movies are really part of POTA pop culture.
Let's face it- a lot of us who are watching these marathons were around watching
the TV Movies for the first time back in 1980, and there's a certain nostalgic
charm to them. It was pretty dry for POTA back then save for the occasional TV
broadcast of one or all of the five films, so these were really something
fresh.
As for the complaints about the picture quality and a possible solution,
all I'll say is this: for years, I was annoyed that the audio sound FX were
messed up in EVERY version of BENEATH except the original release on Magnetic
Video. Instead of posting lament after lament about it, I got in touch with
the powers that be (Fox Home Video), the guy I talked with took an
interest, and as a result the problem was CORRECTED for the Blu-ray release. And
yes, I'm taking credit for that. Makes no difference to me that my name wasn't
listed in a "Special Thanks To" section. There was a problem, I addressed it,
and it was fixed.
It's not impossible.
Chris L.
"Since I have all the episodes of the TV series on DVD, I really don't
understand watching one second of those so-called "TV movies" at all,
but as I was flipping through the channels last weekend I did stop on
FAREWELL TO THE PLANET OF THE APES, and lingered only to gaze like
someone who can't turn away from the sight of a car wreck at how bloody
awful the transfer was; way off color and so blurry a bloody baboon
shouldn't be forced to watch. And as for stereo.... Stereo? The TV show?
It's not in stereo... but anyway... THE POINT IS....
Why doesn't Fox just
burn those bloody "TV movie" things AND JUST SHOW EPISODES OF THE TV
SERIES?!!!!
Oh, because it's called "The Fox Movie Channel" and not "The
Fox Movie & TV Show Channel, you might very well say? (Mightn't you say
that?), to which I reply, "Then just show the two TV show transfers you put
on DVD back to back, and -- if you must -- slap those stupid titles to the
front of them. Makes as much sense as the other way
around." <.html

episode 'The Surgeon' looked terrible so did 'Up the World so High'. The
picture was fuzzy and the color off. <<<.html

Again, there's a historical relevance to them as far as the whole POTA
mythos is concerned. Plus, there's this incredible button on most TV remotes
nowadays that actually CHANGES the channel to a different one if you
don't like what's on at any given time...
Chris L.
>>Rory -- agreed. Those TV movies should burn in hell. I have a
couple of them on 16mm, and even though they are fairly intelligently
edited-down, why do we need to see them when we have the full shows???
<<
>>I think you're absolutely right, those APES TV movies only exist in
a duped down 16mm domain, and the only way they could be made to look
decent is if they were remastered from the 35mm source materials, which
would also mean that their titles would have to be redone -- BUT WHY
WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO THAT? As I've said before, those
"tele-movies" should be burned! Burn them! Burn them all!!! <<
and
>>Well, I don't know about hell, but they're really quite useless. If
they had shot new footage to frame them or in some way transform the

Very true Rory.
When the estranged wife of the head of Technicolor
went to England to head the European division the
films coming out of Britain were getting much better
results. They wondered why. They finally figured
out that most days in England are overcast making
the light much more diffuse. A lot of modern fill scoops
use fluorescent light that are red shifted or color corrected
with a neutral density filter over the light or on the lens to
keep it from looking too green on film. Sometimes if you're
shooting on video and can't white balance daylight indoors
if you have a big enough gel you can put it in the windows.

This
is done with either reflectors or artificial lighting and more often a
combination of both. Also, color photography requires very diffuse
lighting. <.html

Don't play with Daddy's toys, eh?
The amount of POTA stuff in my
collection far out weighs the amount
of shelf and wall space I have. And
the Kim Hunter stuff even more so.
I'd have to move and or take down
everything else. And even then I
might have to rotate on a regular
basis like a museum. I keep a
few select pieces out & up. It
changes a bit here and there
over time. But I have my faves.

No one
says you should. I'm sure if I had a family I'd have nothing of APES on
display, probably couldn't have afforded to collect much of the stuff I
have. One thing I know for sure is that if I had a kid and he damaged some
APE thing I had -- I'd chase him through the cornfield!

.htmlFrankly, I prefer to watch the original episodes than the TV movies. The TV movies were just an attempt to make some money off the series which didn't have enough episodes to be sold in syndication.
I see the TV movies the same way I see the ABC TV edit of the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". It's an interesting artifact but not how the film was meant to be seen. Just as the TV series was meant to be seen in its original episode form and not as the recut TV Movies.

.htmlIt's too bad that now I want one, they don't sell those halogen lights anymore except at Feebay at an exhorbitant price. I keep checking the used stores in my area. Anyway, I plan to put one together with craft foam/glue so even if I stumbled on it, it wouldn't hurt. LOL!!
