Subject: Re: TV series

"In one sense, those five TV Movies are really part of POTA pop
culture. Let's face it- a lot of us who are watching these marathons
were around watching the TV Movies for the first time back in 1980, and
there's a certain nostalgic charm to them. It was pretty dry for POTA
back then save for the occasional TV broadcast of one or all of the
five films, so these were really something fresh.

As for the complaints about the picture quality and a possible
solution, all I'll say is this: for years, I was annoyed that the audio
sound FX were messed up in EVERY version of BENEATH except the original
release on Magnetic Video. Instead of posting lament after lament about
it, I got in touch with the powers that be (Fox Home Video), the guy I
talked with took an interest, and as a result the problem was CORRECTED
for the Blu-ray release. And yes, I'm taking credit for that. Makes no
difference to me that my name wasn't listed in a "Special Thanks To"
section. There was a problem, I addressed it, and it was fixed.

It's not impossible.

Chris L."

All hail, Chris L.!!!! The savior of BENEATH. I'm glad.... BENEATH
needs all the help it can get. However, I must ask you, Chris... Have
you bought BENEATH on Blu-ray yet? Do you even have a player? Have
you managed to watch it yet or listen to the isolated score? Don't you
feel a "Special Thanks" to Fox is in order?

As for the "certain nostalgic charm" of some things... If there's one
thing I've learned since discovering the IMDB and the comments left
there, that no matter what the movie or TV show's quality, somewhere in
the universe there's someone who loves it.

Words of wisdom from the Veetus.

To all the lovers of the TV movies I have this to say, "That was then,
this is now. You get a hold of that and hang on to it, or you might as
well be dead."

I think you want something like this, Jess:

http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Halogen-Torchiere-Floor-Lamp/dp/B000X20TF6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1257823878&sr=8-4

A bit pricey though indeed. I used to have one for years, then threw
it out when I moved. Now I wish I still had it. They're great to have
in a pair on eith side of your "video display," dimmed way down for a
movie theatre effect.

It's too bad that now I want one, they don't sell those halogen lights
anymore except at Feebay at an exhorbitant price. I keep checking the
used stores in my area. Anyway, I plan to put one together with craft
foam/glue so even if I stumbled on it, it wouldn't hurt. LOL!!

Only $ 230 million? James Cameron is slipping. He spent $ 200 million on "Titanic" and that was 12 years ago. You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs.
But it's a win/win for us. If it's a hit, Fox will be high on quality sci-fi and give "Apes" the care it deserves. If it flops, Cameron will say, "Ooops. Sorry. OK, I'll do POTA".

The Museum of Modern Art in New York is having a Tim Burton retrospective, "The Art of Tim Burton" or something.
And YOU guys thought he was a bad director. True artists just aren't appreciated in their own lifetimes!

Burton, in my opinion, is definitely someone who deserves the label of "genius." He's had some missteps along the way--the 2001 POTA film being one of them, despite my somewhat appreciation of it, along with Batman Returns--but so many of his other works are brilliant: Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, the first Batman, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...the guy's amazing. Heck, I even enjoy Mars Attacks. In fact, there's never been a single film of his I've seen that hasn't entertained me, even if it wasn't perfect.

Calling Tim Burton a genius is really lowering the bar on the definition of term "genius" from Einstein to my sixth grade science teacher.

Ironically Burton's career can be summed up with a line from one of his own films, the crapfest Ed Wood, "You people are insane! These movies are terrible!"

As much as despise POTA 2001 and what Burton and others did to it, I
have to also admit that he is a great director that can make movie
magic when he gets it right.

I my opinion, his best movie remains "Ed Wood". It not only captured a
real life quirky character, but the crazy antics of his productions. I
thought that Depp, Landau (father and daughter), and Bill Murray were
all great. I was thrilled that Martin Landau got the oscar he deserved
for playing Bela Lugosi in "Ed Wood".

I know that for a lot of people, not having seen the real movies of Ed
Wood takes a lot away from "Ed Wood" the movie. But the true-life
backgroud to the story of "Ed Wood" is as bizzare as it was portrayed.

So not everyone will like it, but there are fans of "Ed Wood" out
there, myself included.

I watched THE OMEN again over Halloween, and that was a movie that
Heston turned down, much to his later regret. When I watch it I can't
help wish that it had been an APES reunion, with Heston, Harrison as
his wife, McDowall as the photographer, Hunter as that Satan woman who
cares for the kid, Evans as the old guy who talks about the knives,
with Frank Schaffner directing and of course the cherry on top,
Goldsmith's score. Damn, it would have been a great thing, as it is
it's only OK.

As for watching AIRPORT '75 again -- NO THANKS! They should use that
movie, like in CLOCKWORK ORANGE, to get terrorists to talk!

Sweeney Todd is a great film, yeah. It's too bad some of the actors weren't the best singers, but that didn't bother me that much, given how enthralled I was with the film otherwise. I've been a fan of Sweeney Todd ever since the Angela Lansbury version, back in the '80s, and I think Burton did a very worthy follow-up.

I enjoyed both.  And I actually preferred
Depp's to Hearn's.  That band he formed
with Gibby from the BHS, P, gave no clue
to his talent as a singer.  From all accounts
they're about as good as any movie star's
band.  If you seen Russell Crow, or Bruce
Willis, or Keanu Reeve's bands you know
why they say don't quit your day job.

I have many "bad" movies I love to watch, but in general I don't enjoy
the most popular "so-bad-they're-good" movies, which would include PLAN
9 FROM OUTER SPACE, but only because there's nothing any it that's
appealing.

For that reason I found ED WOOD a very depressing movie. I just feel
very sorry for the people in it, as I feel sorry for the later life
that Bela Lugosi had.

What does it say about Tim Burton that he created ED WOOD as a kind of
celebration of pathetic people in failed lives and careers? Was he
making fun of them? I'm sure he'd say that he loves them, and loves
those bad movies and that they're not really bad at all, but I just
don't know.

I thought ED WOOD was watchable -- once -- and that's the number of
times I've seen the entire movie. I've caught bits of it since on
cable, but as I've said, I find the subject matter depressing and I
agree the movie was pointless. The black and white photography was
nice and Burton did a good job of capturing the era, but he should have
only been the DP or production designer on the film, not the
writer/director -- which I think is the case on the majority of the
films he's done. He's just not that good a writer/director, but in
this day and age mediocrity has been raisen to the level of "genius,"
and "brilliant," and "a master craftsman." If the general public --
and most of what passes for film criticism these days -- had a true
knowledge of what real excellence was, over ninety percent of current
cinema would get a huge thumbs down.

But.... what do I know? I'm watching MAD MEN on Blu-ray and planning
on going to see 2012 -- that's how pathetic a cinephile I've become.

The best scene was when he runs into
Orson Wells.  Vincent D'Onofrieo was
convincing even though the Pinky and

It's because her guru told her that was the name she should take.

Yes, his career was uneven, but I think Wells was a "genius," of sorts.
His problem was that he didn't give a crap what studio bosses wanted
and did what he damn well pleased. That pissed people off and they
wouldn't give him the money to make his movies his way, and he wasn't a
rich man, hence doing the crappy movies and TV commercials much later.
If he had been born a couple decades later, I think Orson Wells would
have had a much better film career -- they didn't understand him back
in the forties and fifties. Look what he did with TOUCH OF EVIL
(starring Charlton Heston as a Mexican?!!!!) -- and no one at Universal

The Magnificent Ambersons was

Well, I don't know how much of a debate we want to get into over Orson
Wells (and remember, if he had wanted to do it, he'd have been General
Ursus), but I'll just say I think he was a very intelligent person and
that THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS is a superb film, even if it isn't his
cut. In fact, I think it's a more approachable film than KANE.

There was nothing that went wrong with the production of DR. DOLITTLE,
nothing major anyway. It was simply an ill-conceived project that
wouldn't have been made if THE SOUND OF MUSIC hadn't made so much
money. Everyone involved wildly misinterpreted what the public wanted
to see in motion picture entertainment at the time (mid '60s), and this
was at nearly every studio.

Not meaningless. T is refering to the Bio of Wood on the DVD's bonus materials being longer than the film itself which supports his point that Wood himself was more interesting than the movies that he made.

Are you implying that the opinion of anyone who doesn't work in the film industry, or who is middle-age, is invalid? A person doesn't have to be a film professional to have a valid opinion. This is a forum for people to express their opinions--it's the whole point of a Yahoo group.

I wish I worked in the film business (Even though it's a horrible
business and I think most movies today are crap), but no, I'm just a
middle-aged person with opinions. Always have had opinions, "alot" of
them.

Why? Is there something wrong with opinions? (I'm talking those based
on a good general knowledge of stuff, as opposed to opinions by those
that don't know what they're talking about. The worse are opinions by
those that THINK they know what they're talking about, but are really
idiots -- a certain Rush and Glenn come to mind.)

I noticed that too about the makeups. It just goes to show what a
difference proper lighting and diffusion camera filters make.

It definitely "takes you out of it" to see behind-the-scenes footage on
any movie. Totally destroys suspension of disbelief. I'm still a bit
sorry I visited Lake Powell because it destroyed the mystique that part
of the film had for me when I was younger. I had to visit the place,
but in terms of enjoying the "fantasy" of the film, it would have been
better if I never did. I still want very much to visit Point Dume and
Malibu Creek Park, but I know what that'll mean, however I've looked at
some many photos and on Google Earth at these locations, I don't think
it matters much now.

I agree with the "so much was done with so little" comment. I recently
re-read the chapter on PLANET in Erwin Kim's 1985 book on Franklin J.
Schaffner, and he says Schaffner made a $5.8 Million movie look like it
cost $15 Million. Younger people now like the film looks cheesy and
cheap, but at the time it was an amazing movie and I still think it is.
Other than a few matte shots, it's a totally "in camera" film. No one
today would even be allowed to attempt such a thing.

I think the couple of shots you're talking about of McDowall that look
out of focus were intended to be such. If Shamroy didn't use diffusion
filters (and I'm talking stuff not quite to the extreme of what was
used on Doris Day in most of her movies, or Barbara Stanwyck on "The
Big Valley") to hide the "fakery" in the ape makeup, then a simple
trick would have been to go slightly out of focus. I don't think
Krasner does it in BENEATH, except on the mutants in some shots, BUT
the DPs should have done it in the later sequels and especially BATTLE,
where the closeups are too often way too close, and the TV show, where
the hard lighting was often unflattering to the makeup.

Just got back from seeing '2012'. I liked it. Liked it because your not totally overwhelmed with special effect bak to back, but rather there's a lot of human story inbetween the special effects. Very good ballance inbetween. Liked this film more than Emmerich's previous F/X films.

John, you're a little behind the times. Films were "getting grittier
and more truthful" back in the late sixties/early seventies, but the
grosses on JAWS, STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS drew a close to that
era -- the era of the "director-driven" film. We're now three decades

..your right about the late sixties and early seventies, thats a known fact to anybody over 45. this reminds me of that documentary on ifc about seventies filmaking," a decade under the influence". I agree with the filmakers 99 percent of the time, but also thats part of the reason why cinema was great and why the studios were going bankrupt in the early 70s. unfortunatly when writers and directors are given a free hand they make great movies no one wants to see. the suits are right when they want fluff instead of smart, because crap appeals to most of the people in this country... this is a broad generality but joe sixpack does not want to engage in smart narrative, he just wants to be entertained. the dumbing down is either catering to the people or is in effect because people got dumber. which came first? john m

One of the films we shot for Advance Filmaking
was done almost entirely in one back yard.  We
were supposed to shoot another scene in the woods.
But the scene in the shack too way too long to light.
So since one corner of the yard was woody, we just
moved the dolly tracks over, turned the camera around
and shot the next scene at an angle where you couldn't
see shack.  You couldn't tell it was the same place on film,
and it saved at least two hours of time it would have taken to
tear down move and set up again.  You have to be creative on
a budget, especially when you shooting on a schedule and you're
loosing the light.  If you wait the weather could change, maybe loose
an actor, a piece of equipment, whatever.  The set could burn down.
That happened once.  They were clearing sets at MGM including the
King Kong Wall set.  So They used the fire for the Burning of Atlanta
in Gone With The Wind.  Movie history, destroyed, but not wasted!

to make sure the lighting was right and they didn't shoot

Maybe so, but remember that this show had been gone from the airwaves for six years at that point. We had no DVR, DVD, LD, VCR, on demand- nothing. And until the Sci-Fi channel started showing the series in the 90's, the telemovies were the only way to see some of the TV series episodes AT ALL during all of the 80's and early 90's.

I'm curious as to what got the TV movies made. I don't think that- six years after the show had been cancelled- anyone was thinking about syndicating the series.

It was pretty dry for POTA back then save for the occasional TV broadcast of one or all of the five films, so these were really something fresh.

As for the complaints about the picture quality and a possible solution, all I'll say is this: for years, I was annoyed that the audio sound FX were messed up in EVERY version of BENEATH except the original release on Magnetic Video. Instead of posting lament after lament about it, I got in touch with the powers that be (Fox Home Video), the guy I talked with took an interest, and as a result the problem was CORRECTED for the Blu-ray release. And yes, I'm taking credit for that. Makes no difference to me that my name wasn't listed in a "Special Thanks To" section. There was a problem, I addressed it, and it was fixed.

There's all kinds of films being made. People just aren't going out and seeing them. And they aren't getting the budgets they used to. So it's the small flicks and the big budget tentpoles. The middle budget films are disappearing.
And now it's getting worse because DVD sales are going down, which was the salvation of the small films. Of course that's because of the economy but to the corporate folks it's 2012 in 2009. Don't look for things to change after a summer that saw "Transformers 2" as the # 1 flick in the U.S.

Not true. I enjoyed all the sequels -- WHEN I WAS A KID! (Well,
BENEATH has always bummed me out.) Believe it or not, I actually
thought BATTLE was good the first time I saw it.

What happened after that is a few years followed, both I and the movies
got older, and I began to realize that the sequels weren't as good as
my younger self thought, in fact, in many respects the sequels got
sillier with age. I began to notice that others shared this opinion,
and what was worse was that they started having this same opinion of
the ORIGINAL, which, I believe was because the general public can't
tell one APES film from another. The reputation of the CLASSIC
ORIGINAL was being pulled down by the lesser quality of the sequels.
That's when I went ape. At one point in the early nineties, completely
disgusted with how badly PLANET had been treated -- no, disrespected!
-- by Fox Home Video (CBS/Fox whatever!), I actually called for the
destruction of the sequels. (Can't say I really meant it, but I was so
mad about the situation it's a good thing I didn't have the power to do
it, and, thankfully, the situation with Fox started to turn around in
      the late nineties.)

As for the TV movies... if you destroy them no one is missing out on
anything. They're the TV series in an edited form. Why would you want
to watch the TV movies when you can watch them in their ORIGINAL
form?!!!!! Sorry, but I just don't get it.

This is shaping up to being one of the silliest arguments I've ever had
      in this group.

And were it not for nostalgia, groups like this wouldn't exist in the
      first

something, don't watch it. But don't decree that it should be destroyed
